Dust off your blue suede shoes and polish up the tail fins on the Chevy: this album transports listeners back to the 1950s and early 1960s with all-time classic rock & roll. Children will love the strong rhythms, (sometimes) silly words, and easy-to-follow vocals. Adults will enjoy the cruise down memory lane with megahits like "Rock Around the Clock," "Willie & the Hand Jive," "Rockin' Robin," and "Name Game." Retaining all the spunk and sparkle they did when rock was young, these digitally remastered tunes are ready to inspire a whole new generation of little boppers. --Deborah L. Moore

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2007-06-09

Not only does my five year-old son love it, but I do too. I just turned fifty, so I can relate to these songs' heyday. My boy loves them because they're joyfully silly!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-05-10

My five year old son and I both enjoy this CD. The songs are oldies but goodies and really get him moving. We've listened to it while stuck in traffic and ended up having a lot of fun! I recognize some of the songs from when I was a kid, like Monster Mash and Chewing Gum, and then there are ones from well before my day like Rockin' Robin.
I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun!!.......2007-05-07

As a mom, I am always on the lookout for music for my young kids. Our oldest wanted something he could keep in his room to listen to, but so many CDs these days have questionable lyrics. I wanted something he could listen to whenever he wanted. I found it!!

This CD is so much fun for the whole family to listen to...kids, parents, grandparents...everyone will love it! I was amazed that I could get all of these fabulous songs by ORIGINAL ARTISTS on one CD for this price! Usually, you will pay this much for music done by immitation artists. This was great! The kids thought so many of these songs were funny...Yakkity Yak; Splish, Splash!; Willie & the Hand Jive. We all had a few laughs and some very funny dancing. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

5 out of 5 stars Kids and adults will love this.......2006-08-17

A lot of the classic Rock and Roll songs of the late 1950s-early 1960s on this album. This is a great album to introduce to young kids and adults who love classic rock and roll songs.

4 out of 5 stars Toddlers Love Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-01-30

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old twins who absolutely just love it! It's great music for family gatherings because the old and young alike can enjoy singing and dancing along to it.

I don't know who likes this CD more, my 18 month old twins or their grandparents!

Barbara Ann was an instant hit with the twins and nothing is cuter than seeing them dancing around the house singing ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba with or without the music playing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Music........2004-11-04

A CHILD'S CELEBRATION OF DANCE MUSIC is a wonderful collection of music put out by the Music for Little People label. There aren't very many people familiar with the albums released by Music for Little People, but thier label produces some of the best collections of popular music suitable for families that I have ever come across. Most of their albums are centered around a theme or type of music (Country, Rock and Roll, etc.) and it's all good stuff sung by the original artists. No Britney Spears or boy band songs here. Instead, songs that at one time were fairly popular, but that are now somewhat obscure are brought together with a few better known hits. This collection includes songs that are fun to dance to. Some of my favorites include:

"Twist" by Chubby Checker

"Disco Duck" by Rick Dee and His Cast of Idiots

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5

"Palisades Park" by Freddy Cannon

"Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Children and adults will both delight these songs. I can attest that I've used the album for small dance parties I've had with my friends, as major music for a 50s theme meal at a summer camp, and played it many times on the children's radio show I once djed and produced and on the webradio show I currently host. So, "Come on baby, let's do the twist."

5 out of 5 stars Good Wholesome Music.......2003-01-16

My children, ages 2 and 4, absolutely love this CD! It's great for road trips in the car or when the children need a little exercise. Most of the songs were released before my time, but I've learned all the words. It makes a great gift for baby-boomers too.

4 out of 5 stars 5 1/2 YEAR OLD WAS NOT AS THRILLED AS I.......2002-02-16

IT HAS SOME GREAT DANCING TUNES-NO DOUBT. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO GET UP AND SHAKE YOUR BOTTY. I LOVE IT. MY SON, WHOM IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED FOR, IS A BIT LESS ENTHEUSTAIC.

5 out of 5 stars Dance Music by various artists.......1999-12-06

I purchased this CD for my second grade classroom and my students and I love it! Each time I play this music my students can't help but to dance while they are working and sing along with the music. It is definitely one of my favorite CDs to play.

As the leader of one the most vital and volatile bands of the British Invasion, Ray Davies may also have been one of the genre's most underappreciated, often playing second fiddle to the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Jagger, but never failing to reignite the flame on a now-legendary songwriting caldron. More than a decade since the Kinks' last release, Davies makes his virgin foray into solo artistry with 13 songs that reverberate with the wistfulness and introspection that have forever been his trademark. It doesn't take long to detect, as the guitar/bass crescendo and tomorrow-will-be-better lyrics make "Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)" a singalong halfway through its 4:21. And then the world once again is put under Davies's uncanny surveillance: his pal Mr. Brown in the country-singed "Next Door Neighbour," "The Tourist" hobnobbing in New Orleans (where Davies makes an American home), and eras of lost acquaintances in "All She Wrote," a Kinks-ish acoustic rocker. They are reminders of what we've missed--and hopefully what's yet to come--from a remarkable artist whose return is undoubtedly being celebrated from the streets of a restored Big Easy to the barstools of Muswell Hill. --Scott Holter

2 out of 5 stars Bring back the kinks!!.......2007-06-20

A year after it's release i still can't get into "Other Peoples Lives". No one champions Ray/The Kinks more than I, but this release is a major dissapointment. What's missing? How about melodies, no bridge on most songs, and no backing vocals worth hearing. (Bring back Rasa!). Most almost qualify as novelty numbers, which isn't neccessarily bad when you consider "Apeman" falls into this catagory, but there's no "Apeman" here! Lyrics arn't particularly compelling either. It took 10 years for this? This from a man who averaged one (usually compelling) release a year for almost 30 years!! Highlights include "Thanksgiving Day" (Typical Ray) and "Is there life after Breakfeast?". The rest is not even up too "Preservation" standards... Ray, please track down Dave, Mick, Nobby, and "The Baptist". And get busy, (Please not on Preservation Act III). How about a follow up to "Village Green"?

2 out of 5 stars Review from the People in the Village.......2007-06-13

I too found this LP uninspiring and disappointing. I won't even go on about my love for the man and his work, but there is an awful lot of sophomoric rhyming on almost every single song here. the cliches are actually a bit embarrassing at times. OK, maybe Ray wrote the originals and he's due to repeat himself, but there are times when I cringe. I have tried repeatedly to get into this LP, and it's a bit... challenging.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars, Kinks it's not, It's all that and more....Great!.......2007-06-06

I have to agree with all the Happy others reviews. I still have to pull out and have my fix of Kink's from time to time. This is like a breath of fresh air. And, it took too long to get here...but, worth the wait!
Fresh, yet very much like a trip down nostalgia lane.

3 out of 5 stars He surely can do much better!!.......2007-03-31

I got this cd, from Ray Davies, with very high hopes, and after many hearings, i can only say, that i was disapointed. Sure the great Kink master sounds happy to be alive and that shows in some of the songs. But the old Kinks magic and great melody on the songs is missing.

My favorite is "The Morning After", great song. Let s' hope he does not wait more years to reunite The Kinks, because if he does so (record another Kinks album in some years), maybe the "music industry" will be so strange that there wont be cds to buy. People will only be buying one song on the internet an not complete recordins from an artist or band.

2 out of 5 stars Raise the bar, will ya Ray........2007-03-11

If you met me or entered my home no-one could disbute my Ray Davies-fan mania.
However, like another customer reviewer, I also can't put my finger on why I dislike this album "Other People's Lives".
Is it because it sounds over produced? Stiff and labored? Because the songs are so mediocre? (Although I found the tracks "The Tourist" and "Stand Up Comic" somewhat unique). All of the above?
This recording, for me, doesn't even inspire repeated listenings (although I have tried with each listen to enjoy it).
I wish someone would encourage or inspire Ray to raise the bar musically on his songwriting.

4 out of 5 stars I'm lovin freedom..........2007-07-06

here is Kula Shaker's second EP in a little over a year, again a Japanese import. This one is slightly better than 2006's Revenge of the King.
1. Re-recorded (aka 2007 Stangefolk album version) "Dictator of the Free World" that blows the old version out of the water. Nice and organ-y, classic backing ovcals. A+ all around (not to mention lyrics that bash Bush :0 )
2. Super CB Operator is straight out of the 60's. Reminiscent of "Hush". Rocking song, upbeat, great feel overall. A bonus song on Strangefolk as well.
3. Big Bad Wolf is the worst on here, definite b-side material, silly lyrics right out of the Three Little Pigs children's story.
4. Out on the Highway is an acoustic version of the song from Strangefolk. Great song.
5. Ep closes with a song sung by bassist Alonza, which to my knowledge, is from one of his other groups. Very 60's feel. Great song.

The bottom line- if you are a huge fan, this is a must. In theory though, it's for completists, seeing as most of this material is on Strangefolk.

And the cover art is awesome!

4 out of 5 stars The Sound is an Odd Mix of Kula Shaker and Led Zeppelin from the Led Zeppelin III or IV Era.......2007-06-27

Yes, you read that correctly. Aside from Great Dictator (Of The Free Wrold), the tunes have a slightly twangy bluegrass feel never before heard on a Kula Shaker release. If you purchase this, don't expect the over-produced (but lush) sound of Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts, and forget about the more rocking psychedelic sounds of "K". I'm not saying it is bad, so don't jump to conclusions.

From what I've heard of "Strangefolk" (Second Sight being my only comparison at this point in time), that rich sound evident on "Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts" has returned in full force while "Freedom Lovin' People EP" has abandoned the multi-layered sea of instruments and deep tones in favor of a more organic sound.

Great Dictator (Of The Free Wrold) - A fun, Bush-bashing song with great falsetto backing vocals and clasic KS organs. It may not be Tattva or Sound of Drums, but it is a rollicking good time with a bit of the traditional Kula Shaker sound and a riotous collection of lyrics.

Super Cb Operator - Similar beat to Dictator, same vocal effects and similar tone but without the constant presence of the organs/keyboards. A fun song, but nothing special compared to other Kula Shaker songs.

Big Bad Wolf - A skiffle beat or old-fashioned Southern-rock beat (Elvis' Bossanova Baby or Rock-a-hula Baby come to mind). Again, it is a fun song but nothing to write home about when you put it side-by-side with songs from "K", "Summer Sun EP" or "Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts"

Out On The Sky - A "Battle of Evermore" style is applied to this song with good results. Similar instruments can be heard throughout (I could swear I heard a lute or mandolin at one point).

Some Good Reason - Hard to classify this one. It has a more pervasive 60's feel to it that was not evident in the other tracks. Probably the most complex track on the EP, it has a less conventional beat (that still rocks) and a lot of good backing vocals and harmonizing.

Overall, it does not stack up against the "Mystical Machine Gun Ep" or the "Summer Sun EP" as it has much less substance. Compared to most music on the airwaves today, it is a solid release but in the Kula Shaker catalogue it is not up to snuff. I'd recommend it for existing Kula Shaker fans, but not for someone new to the band.

4 out of 5 stars Tracks from the vaults.......2006-08-03

Cryin' Heart Blues is another collection of tracks from the Rick Danko archives. It's a mixture of 17 live and studio cuts and demos and old favourites as well as tracks not previously released. 'When I Get My Just Rewards' and 'Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone' are polished studio works while 'New Mexicoe' is somewhat looser than the released version despite the possible presence of Eric Clapton and Ron Wood - not a very distinguished version, I have to say, so the guitarists could be Eric Wood and Ron Clapton for all the difference they make.

'Twilight' is in its compulsory second place in the running order and is a nice full band version. Among the live tracks 'Java Blues' and 'Unfaithful Servant' with Blondie Chaplin and Paul Butterfield both stand out and the CD is topped and tailed with two different live takes of 'Mystery Train'.

There can't be a lot left to release from any of the Band archives but what there is still sounds pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Wishing for More.......2006-07-06

Singer/instrumentalist Rick Danko melded country and urban soul influences into a unique sound that some of us will always wish for more of. For us, this collection of previously unreleased material was issued some six years after his death. Three tracks here -- the Motownish "Turn to Stone" and "Cry Another Tear" and the pure-country "When I Get My Just Rewards" -- are among the most beautiful vocals he ever recorded and, alone, justify this disc. Given that chronic sobriety issues hampered his career, it is somewhat distressing to hear him so obviously hammered on certain tracks, including the four live tracks that close the album, but it can't be denied that those tracks rock hard.

4 out of 5 stars More gems from the vault.......2006-02-25

Danko has always had that special joy and vulnerability in his material. This set is no disappointment, though he is less prominent in some of the tracks. Some are alternate takes of Danko/Band standards, but none are throwaways. The live cuts with Paul Butterfield are a welcome addition, especially the riveting version of Unfaithful Servant (with an incredible harmonica solo by Butterfield).

Album Description

Said Rolling Stone, in their 4-star review:

If Modest Mouse spent a year in a Chuck E. Cheese ball pit, they might emerge sounding like the delightful Brooklyn quartet Bishop Allen. That's not to say that these indie-poppers aren't a serious band. On their debut, Charm School, the foursome blend sharp, jangly guitars with catchy melodies and big choruses. Songwriters Justin Rice and Christian Rudder write cheeky lyrics and layer their tunes with handclaps ("Charm School") and singalongs ("Ghosts Are Good Company"). And the band's carefree attitude, along with their musicianship, make Charm School as addictive as it is playful. Add drummer Margaret Miller and bassist Bonnie Karin, and they enter indie elite. Karin's ethereal backing vocals complement Rice's perfectly -- propelling already memorable tracks into charmed harmonic bliss.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Throwing Furniture Off the Roof.......2007-07-01

"Charm School" is a delightfully silly set. It has bubbly charm of grape soda pop. It doesn't take itself seriously like on the wacky "Penitentiary Bound," "You be whatever you want to be & see whatever you think you see & take whatever you like for free & just like I've been saying every single day since I wore this suit..." "Bishop Allen Drive" is hilarious with its pop chorus and its stunningly bizarre story, "I don't know why, but she couldn't stand still; The radio was playing, it was time to kill; We were throwing furniture off the roof; We'd watch it shatter on the ground below singing la la la la..." "Things Are What You Make of Them" beats like the soundtrack to "The Tell-Tale Heart," "She said: Son, if you don't make a noise, God will never know you're there." "Empire City" & "Quarter to Three" are also diamonds. In Bishop Allen's hands, "Eve of Destruction" is remade in unique fashion. While not each track is memorable, there are so many wildly original classics that this is a disc not to be missed. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Good enough to give chills, fun enough to sing forever.......2005-10-20

If you like The Shins, Modest Mouse, or even the better songs of the Rolling Stones, I can almost guarantee you will like this album. I heard a couple of their songs online, loved them instantly, got chills up and down my arms from their emotion and their innovation, and I ordered it immediately.
This is instantly likeable music, music I knew I loved the moment I heard it. That bands like Bishop Allen aren't being hounded by every major label out there is baffling to me. This album features terrific female backing vocals, simple yet rocking and friendly songs, occasional drums by Microsoft Excel, witty lyrics, a terrific tribute/thank you song "Eve of Destruction" in which the band thanks all their friends on a day that might be their last. The album's also got funny liner notes, and one of the coolest songs I've ever heard, "Ghosts are Good Company,"
Buy "Charm School" now. Listen to the samples on Amazon, and then buy it immediately. And, if you like this, check out Soltero. Good music is out there, and waiting for you.

5 out of 5 stars Justin, David Byrne wants his gesticulations back..........2005-02-05

Ok, well Mr. Rice fully deserves any wild hand waving rights though because this is a great album. Another live-show-bought-the-album deal (the guy on the left of the album, Mr. Rudder, actually sold me it to me. Sorry amazon) the album has only continued to grow on me. I could go on about depth of lyrics, mature sound, etc., but I can't compete with a guy from Rolling Stone who probably has a degree in journalism and critical theory. Let's just say 'Charm School' is a good buy for anyone who can stand a little bit of fun and is in the midst of the mainstream doldrums. A little Atom and His Package, a little Modest Mouse (sorry), a little Hell's Kitchen, and a little art school band all grown up! Pixies beaten with an irony stick! I could go on! Fantastic stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming.......2004-09-30

I heard "Busted Heart" on the radio and was immediately intrigued. Checked out some of the mp3s they had on their web site and after listening to them twice, bought the album. I love it! It's in constant rotation and if I don't listen to it every few days, I crave it. Every song is great. particularly like Ghosts Are Good Company and the reprise of Things are what you make of them is gorgeous. great lyrics, fun sounds, pop with a little bit of a punk edge. If you like pop, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good punchy Pop-Rock.......2004-08-13

I like this quirky CD a whole lot. The guitar work sounds like the strongest pop songs of Luna but with quite a bit more spark. These are fun songs that seem to take many cues from 50s rock (Little Black Ache), the best 60s psyche-pop (Charm School) as well as a mixed bag of folk and rock -- and of course some of the darker and often humorous ironies found in the lyrics of bands like King Missile. Throughout the CD, the female vocals are quite lovely, and compliment the quirky, ironic, and sometimes sublime male lead vocals quite nicely. Charm School is a creative mix of atmospheric songs, pop ballads, and the like. As I learned in my years in NYC, the best things in the city - despite the rumors - usually cross a bridge or drive through a tunnel to deliver and Bishop Allen does exactly that!

I suggest you hear a few of the complete songs on the Bishop Allen web site before you buy the disk. They have some full songs for listening.

5 out of 5 stars nothing like it.......2006-10-01

If you want some fun, light, catchy, short and FUN music, check this out. Marc Bolan is famous for some of his more rockin stuff like Children of the Revolution, but this is almost something else entirely. This is an acoustic duo: guitar/voice and congo/bongo/whatever. And all of the songs are about magical elves and sorcerers, as silly as that sounds it is great...more on that below.

Here is a quick primer on how to appreciate Marc Bolan lyrics. I think people are sometimes too concerned with content of lyrics, or expect to be moved or enlightened, and if something isn't presented with a poetic dignified air or something, then it is [...] Whatever, i know i'm making horrible generalizations. I've read people criticize Marc Bolan for being vacuous party rock or something. Don't trust anyone who makes such claims about Marc Bolan. Listen to some of these jems: you got a hubcap diamond star halo, just like a silet-studded sabre-tooth dream, riding sliding sorceress in your dungarees got me on my knees... (those are from the album 'The Slider', this is just a defense of Marc Bolan in general). He's not making a claim to high-art, so you won't get if you are into that fashion show. You have to disengage your need to seem intellectual. Marc Bolan is party rock a bit, but he is the party rock MASTER!
"Well you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black
Don't look back
And I love you
You're dirty and sweat oh yea...Bang a gong...get it on..."

4 out of 5 stars Unlike anything before it.......2005-12-19

Where on Earth (or anywhere in the known multiverse for that matter) did this strangely mellifluous cacophony come from? It seemed unlike anything heard before and arrived fully formed onto the Peelian airwaves in the summer of 1968, hot on the heels of the astonishing single Debora (backed by Child Star, which was included on the album). And it was everywhere. You'd go to an outdoor free concert, or to a concert headlined by Fairport Convention, or Roy Harper, or the Edgar Broughton Band, or just about anyone, and there would be these pixies in support, sitting cross-legged on a colourful rug and declaiming a world of doors in oak trees, strange orchestras, Beethoven hair, wizards and weilders of words. Marc would be throwing back his mane and uttering throaty cries and bleats into the air, whilst confidently marshalling an army of sonic colours from his guitar, as Steve Peregrine-Took battled merrily on an array of Eastern-looking percussion instruments and added deft harmonies to Marc's lyrics as appropriate.
It is almost as mysterious now as it was then, although their influence can be heard in contemporary performers such as Devendra Banhart, and there were few clues to be had from Marc Bolan's previous work. This consisted of the two Decca singles The Wizard and The Third Degree and a single for Parlophone called Hippy Gumbo, all of which were relatively conventional moddish beat group ventures; followed by a four month stint in early 1967 with proto punk extremist mod-art band John's Children, for whom he provided lyrics and regularly beat up his highly amplified Gibson guitar with a heavy metal chain onstage, in a stage act which featured mock fights with fake blood - a far cry from Kingsley Mole.
When speaking of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Marc claimed to have been inspired by Ravi Shankar, which explains a little of the eastern influence though Ravi Shankar recordings seldom had the histrionic vocalise which featured on My People Were Fair...
As booklet note writer Mark Paytress observes, rock and roll was nearer the surface, especially on side openers Hot Rod Mama and Mustang Ford, both borrowing from the American surf and hot rod crazes of the early sixties, and The Wizard of course became re-invented as a live Tyrannosaurus Rex staple before being recorded in a third incarnation for the album T Rex.
This edition presents the album in both mono and stereo full versions. Marc Bolan was said to prefer the mono version because of mixing problems which had resulted in a thinness in the stereo version, but these problems seem to have largely overcome on this remaster so I find myself preferring the stereo half, presented as bonus tracks. These seem to be mixes of the same takes, although Dwarfish Trumpet Blues has an extra section, but the notes mention that four of the bonus tracks date from demo sessions recorded for Joe Boyd at Sound Techniques in late 1967.
The other bonus tracks consist of the single Debora (mono), which unlike the album was recorded at Advision, along with an alternate mono take; and early versions of Child Star (mono) and Chateau In Virginia Waters (stereo).
Marc Bolan went on to refine and improve the style he had introduced on this album, but no future albums could have the freshness and impact of this fearsome debut

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2005-01-10

The early T Rex albums are an interesting lot. While the full-blown electric sound that was to develop on later albums such as Electric Warrior had yet to appear on these records, T Rex's first five albums are all remarkably consistent and well worth picking up. The sound on this record (and its follow-ups) is stripped down and simple, but still very effective. Not much more than Marc Bolan's acoustic guitar, some percussion and a few added "psychedelic" effects here and there. But that's really all you need. Marc Bolan always had a way with writing catchy songs with ridiculous, wonderful lyrics, and My People Were Fair... doesn't stray away from that model. It blows my mind to think that this album was recorded over 35 years ago because it's aged remarkably well.

Contrary to what a previous reviewer has stated, Bolan's vocals are not terrible on this record. His voice is less developed here than it would be on the later T Rex recordings (I noticed more of a quaver in his voice), but he sounds far from being a "retarded kid making a pathetic attempt to sing". In fact, I think he sings quite fine here if you ask me. His voice is admittedly a bit of an acquired taste, but then again so is T Rex in the first place.

At times My People Were Fair... sounds remarkably similar to some of the "freak-folk" artists (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom) who are currently all the indie rage. While this may not be the best entry point into T Rex's early work (A Beard of Stars is hands down the best from this period), it's still an excellent record.

2 out of 5 stars Weak debut album.......2004-10-10

My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair... But Now Their Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows (1968.) Tyrannosaurus Rex's first album.

Marc Bolan would become a rock and roll superstar in the 1970s, as a part of the glam rock outfit T. Rex. However, before that incarnation of the band was created, an earlier version of his band, called Tyrannosaurus Rex, existed. This band isn't thought of as being a glam rock act like T. Rex, but rather as being somewhat of a progressive rock outfit similar to bands like sixties Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. The band's first album was released in 1968. Its title might just be the longest album title in rock and roll history. How does My People... measure up? Read on for my review.

I had really great hopes for this album, knowing it was Marc Bolan singing on it, and that many people had compared the band to bands like the sixties version of Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. Unfortunately, my expectations for the album were much too high. As soon as I started listening, I was gravely disappointed. Bolan's vocals were TERRIBLE. On this album, he sounds like a retarted kid making a pathetic attempt to sing. This is only made worse by the fact that so many of the tracks sound alike. Admittingly, there are a few salvagable tracks (mostly on the latter half of the album), but most of this album is disposable. I DO like the album's cover, but obviously, like with books, you can't judge an album by its cover. This album is NOT RECOMMENDED, unless you are a Marc Bolan completist.

Currently (as of October 9, 2004), there are two versions of this album readily available, although neither one is sold in America. One is the import version that Amazon sells. This is a good version in that it combines the stereo and mono versions of the album onto a single disc. The other version is a Russian reissue. It doesn't have any bonus tracks, but it DOES have an entire other album on the disc - Zinc Alloy And The Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow. I would have to recommend the latter version, as it is less expensive and has two totally different albums on one disc.

I was gravely disappointed in this album, but fortunately, it wouldn't serve as a premonition of Bolan's musical future. Not long after releasing this album, he would find his sound as a classic glam rock artist, and grow to be well-liked by audiences up until his death in a car accident on September 16, 1977. Skip this album unless you're a Bolan completist. Start with Electric Warrior or a hits compilation if you're new to Bolan's work.

The previous three Toddlers Sing cds are excellent. My grandkids enjoy them all the time. This Rock and Roll cd just does't do it! Music is too loud - none of the joy and excitement of the previous Toddlers Sing cds. A real disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars The CD I waited 20 years to buy. Just as great as I remembered it!!.......2007-04-09

I was just a kid in the 80's when I got this album on tape. It was a huge influence on my musical taste and life. Most of the songs on this album I still remembered -even though I hadn't even listed to the album in 20 years! I have been looking for this on CD for quite some time now and finally found it. Well worth the wait and just as good as I could remember it. Quite a clean remastering and one of my favorite albums of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Dave shows a different side as a soloist .......2006-04-19

This album shows how diverse Dave is as a soloist. Listening to this and his two earlier efforts reinforces just how much he contributed to the Kinks. His guitar work speaks for itself and his songwriting is very strong. He shares his views, beliefs and personal experiences intertwined with some really haunting melodies. All of his work is worth listening to as well as his live performances. He doesn't disappoint. Lets hope he gets back on stage real soon

3 out of 5 stars Metaphysical musings and enjoyable pop from brother Dave.......2005-09-29

It's nice to finally be able to hear Dave Davies' "Chosen People" after the album being out of print for two decades. It is certainly more accessible than his first two solo efforts, which sometimes buried great songs in murky, plodding production. For "Chosen People" Dave brought in a full backing band instead of playing everything himself in endless overdubs, and the result is a tighter, crisper, and far more lively sound. Dave also turns in some great vocals, especially on the haunting "True Story" ("Are you talking to me?"). There's a good mix of rockers and ballads, but not much of the heavy metal that characterized his previous albums.

The songwriting here is fairly solid (but not as consistently good as the high water mark he would hit on his next album, "BUG"). And as always, Dave's heavy-handed peace-and-love preaching is leavened with enough mysticism and UFO lore to keep things interesting!

Overall, this is a good-but-not-great set sure to please diehard Dave fans, and probably inconsequential to anyone else. Go for "BUG" first.

    4 out of 5 stars Dave's third and best 80's album.......2005-09-14

Chosen People is easily the best and the most accessible of the three albums Dave recorded in the early 80s. While the first two albums sounded like heavy metal work outs, with the third album Dave chose to introduce acoustic guitars, keyboards and strings. This makes the album more diverse and the songmaterial is more mature and much stronger. Would be nice if Dave would add some tracks of this album to his setlist if and when he goes back on the road. Cheers dave!
