With the possible exception of Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart," Brooks & Dunn's 1992 mega-hit, "Boot Scootin' Boogie," did more to establish a big country audience for dance numbers than any other song. Today country fans often seem divided between an older crowd that likes to sit in its seats and listen to a heartbreaking ballad and a younger crowd that prefers to jump out of its seats and scoot their boots across the dance floor. Brooks & Dunn may be pioneers of the country-dance movement, but they refuse to take sides in this debate. Waitin' on Sundown is diplomatically divided between uptempo rabble-rousers, kicked along by a loud snare drum, and slow, sentimental confessions, underscored by a pedal steel guitar. As a result, the popular twosome reflects the balance in contemporary mainstream country as well as anyone. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Exciting third album.......2005-04-27

Kix and Ronnie began their career as a duo with two incredible albums. They have never quite matched that standard since but have nevertheless recorded a string of excellent albums. This was their third album and therefore lives in the shadow of the first two, but it contains a lot of great music. It has a generally mellower feel to it than its predecessors, simply because there are fewer hard-rocking songs and more ballads and mid-tempo songs - however, it is definitely not a mellow album.
The album yielded four major country hits - Little Miss Honky-tonk, Whiskey under the bridge, She's not the cheating kind and You're gonna miss me when I'm gone. Only one song (Silver and gold) did not feature either Kix or Ronnie among the songwriting credits but this, like all the others, is an original song although the song title was not new. For example, Dolly Parton recorded a different song titled Silver and gold for her album, Eagle when she flies.

The album begins with Little Miss Honky-tonk, which is a hard-rocking song of the type I'd come to expect from them. After that comes a series of excellent slow and mid-tempo songs, demonstrating that they can sing a variety of material. The second half of the collection is generally faster than the first half, but the only hard-rocking song is Whiskey under the bridge.

So this album is a little different from their first two but if you enjoy the music of Brooks and Dunn, this is well worth a listen - but buy those earlier albums first.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best !.......2001-12-25

I've been a B&D fan ever since their debut CD in 91'. I think 'Waitin on Sundown' is one of their best. I bought the CD back in 95 & I still listen to it often. 'She's not the cheatin kind', 'Silver & Gold', & 'You're gonna miss me when I'm gone' are my favorite tracks. They are songs that get stuck in your head for the rest of the day. I think this CD should be in any B&D fans collection. I was lucky enough to see them in concert in Evansville, IN back in 97 with Reba. They ROCKED!

    5 out of 5 stars B & D strike again........2000-12-30

Brooks and Dunn's 3rd album certainly lives up to their previous ones. It starts off with the danceable "Little Miss Honky Tonk" which will set yer boots to scootin'. Then it slows down a bit for 4 songs before picking up the tempo again. Great songs, great beats, great lyrics, great album. And a great duo.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM!.......2000-01-28

This album is fantastic! It produced what I consider to be two of the best songs of Brooks & Dunn's whole career: She's Not The Cheatin' Kind and You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone. Other good songs are Silver and Gold, I'll Never Forgive My Heart, and Whiskey Under The Bridge. There are a couple of songs that I could've done without, but it's easy to overlook a couple of bad songs when you listen to all of the excellent songs on this album. Buy it today! You'll be glad you did!

    5 out of 5 stars A winner.......1999-05-09

This is my fourth Brooks & Dunn purchase. I've bought "If You See Her," "The Greatest Hits Collection," and "Hard Workin' Man" in that order. My favorite song on this album is "Little Miss Honky Tonk," but I like all of the other songs. Compared to "Hard Workin' Man," there are more ballads, but that's not really a bad thing. I am definately buying the remaining two albums . I think that they are one of the greatest vocal duos of all time, if not the greatest.

    5 out of 5 stars Crisp & Coherent.......2004-03-18

Enjoying Classical music for over 50 years, I find it stimulating to listen to a body of work that captures your attention without offending. "Contrasts" is an excellant CD!
To the Classical Purist blending different musical period styles is for the most part an uncomfortable experience. However, from the Composer's point of view, it is a much more difficult task to be able to combine musical/period/styles and pull off a cohesive entity. "Hell's Angels" qualifies, with ease, as one of those rare orchestral pieces. Being a "Classical Purist" makes one content to whirl around in an eddy as opposed to enjoying the whole river and its many currents which freely intertwine. Dom's view

4 out of 5 stars Two Treasures, Two Trifles.......2003-08-26

The real find here is the 'Passacaglia for Orchestra' by a genuine master of American music, the under-appreciated Benjamin Lees, now in his 80th year. The muscular 11-minute 'Passacaglia' is based on a disjunct 24-note quasi-atonal cello theme that strikes me as a deconstruction of the theme from Bach's 'Art of Fugue,' although I have no idea if that was Lees' intention. It consists of the theme followed by nineteen variations and a coda. Lees' mastery of orchestration and compositional inventiveness get a real work-out here. There is metrical and rhythmic diversity (e.g., one of the variations is in 5/8), creative orchestration (one variation has growling trombone/tuba flutter-tonguing, another has hypnotic, but humorous, use of temple blocks), augmentation and diminution of the theme, brass chorales, leap-frogging strings, all leading to the coda for full orchestra with triumphant pealing bells, a joyous conclusion to a short but densely constructed piece that has been played many times by American orchestras but never, to my knowledge, recorded before. It is played brilliantly by the Oregon Symphony under its outgoing music director, the hugely talented James DePreist (the most misspelled conductor in recent memory), a man who has given many of us many memorable performances of 20th-century music. [As if happens, I have another DePreist/Oregon recording in my review pile, a collection of music by Oregon composer Tomas Svoboda.]

The Passacaglia is followed by a classic of American symphonic composition, the Fourth Symphony of Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987). It was composed for and premièred by Eugene Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra in 1954 and recorded by them shortly afterward. That mono recording, coupled with an effective suite by Louis Gesensway called 'Four Squares of Philadelphia,' was a staple of the old Columbia catalog for many years. Those performances have been transferred to CD on the Albany Label (and coupled with William Schuman's 'Credendum'); I don't have that CD but a quick listen of my old LP reveals that the Ormandy/Philly recording is more immediately effective that this DePreist/Oregon version. The current recording seems a bit recessed, particularly in the first movement. Also, the whirling violins in IV are a bit covered in the current recording, robbing the exciting finale of some immediacy. I can't say enough for the Oregon winds and brass, however, and suspect the covered strings are the result more of the CD's sound production than the orchestra or conductors doing. This symphony has long been a favorite and you owe it to yourself to familiarize yourself with it, either from this CD or the one on Albany.

The final two pieces here are by Michael Daugherty (b. 1954), who has had a run of recordings recently. I will say up front that I've yet to hear anything by Daugherty that made me want to hear it again. And that goes for these two pieces--'Sundown on South Street' from his Second Symphony, and 'Hell's Angels.' Daugherty's style tends to borrow a good deal from vernacular music--jazz, pop, rock--and frankly it seems to me that he makes a dog's breakfast of it all. Others, obviously, feel much more positive about it. 'Hell's Angels' is a concerto of sorts for bassoon quartet (three bassoons, one contra-bassoon) and it certainly is well-played by the soloists. However, there is such vulgarity and triviality inherent in the piece that I think it is better if I say no more.

Suffice it to say, I recommend this CD for the Persichetti and especially for the Lees. They account for about 38 minutes of the CD's total of 61 minutes.

One final note: I have indicated in some earlier reviews (primarily of re-releases on Naxos of pieces previously released on Delos and featuring the Seattle Symphony under Gerard Schwarz) that I thought the Delos label had gone belly up. Obviously I was wrong. I not only apologize for having suggested it, but hasten to add that I'm delighted to hear that they still exist. They have given us many fine recordings of American music over the years. I hope they continue to do so for many years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'On Sundown' (Neptune).......2005-06-12

Nice cover and all,but believe it or not,the same exact show that's on their 'Space Ritual II' CD.A brain damaging 64 minutes worth of vintage space rock that all us true Hawkfans have come to love, live for and uphold close and deep within our hearts.Sure, you all know the drill,"Space Is Deep","Upside Down",the Nik Turner power-packed gem "Brainstorm" and the rest are here to play over and over and over until your mind is truly numb.Hey,who says old hippie music never dies?Well, actually it doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars top quality high voltage country.......2004-10-13

This is a re-release of Brooks & Dunn's third CD from 1994, which has three Billboard # 1 hits ("Little Miss Honkey Tonk", "She's Not the Cheatin' Kind", "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone") and two Top 10 hits ("I'll Never Forgive My Heart" and "Whiskey Under the Bridge") and it's a certified Triple Platinum CD.
With the exception of "Silver and Gold", written by Lunn and Noble, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn penned all the other tracks, either alone or together, and sometimes with a co-writer, like Don Cook, who produced this CD with Scott Hendricks.
All the tracks have brilliant musicianship, predominantly with Ronnie's brawny vocals, and Kix's terrific guitar work.

Brooks & Dunn are the all time top-selling country duo, and only behind Simon & Garfunkel when compared to all genres of music, with 27 million records sold and counting, and with good reason; they are two of the most dependable artists in country music, always giving their fans top quality albums, full of great melodies, danceable rhythms, and fabulous performances.
A solid mix of rip-roarin' country and nice ballads, my favorite track on this CD is perhaps the easy swing of "If That's the Way You Want It", with its marvelous fiddle and piano work.

This re-release does not have a booklet insert, but is at a very nice price, making it a good bargain for your country music collection, or an extra for your car, to make navigating the highways of your life more enjoyable. Total playing time is 35'36.
