Album Description
The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare

Get It While You Can.......2006-10-13
Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01
The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.
The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.
Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.
Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.
Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

It doesn't get much more authentic than this! These eight CDs present music by William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Henry Purcell, John Blow, Matthew Locke, the little-known Pelham Humfrey, John Sheppard, and John Taverner--all recorded in Dorchester Abbey, Oxford, England, and sung by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford's great all-male choir. Their heritage goes back to Taverner himself. Their sound is both pure and lush, their singing immaculate. This is music in the finest English tradition, beautiful, devotional music for all seasons. --Robert Levine

Uncle Tupelo provided a blueprint for "alternative country" in 1990 with the release of their debut, No Depression, a whirlwind of dynamic, passionate punk rock and rootsy country and folk. In the years since that pivotal record, alternative country has basically been transformed into a version of country rock that would make the Eagles proud. Portland, Oregon's Richmond Fontaine, however, have chosen to stay true to Uncle Tupelo's vision. Lost Son burns bright, fueled by equal doses of high-octane punk and hard-luck country moonshine. It is at turns wistful, ferocious, sweet, discordant, and occasionally disturbing in both its lyrics and songs. Lead singer and guitarist Willie Vlauten spins tales as dark and twisted as the roots of an ancient Douglas fir and his Northwest vision of Americana is inspired as much by his surroundings as his musical influences, though you're never quite sure who the protagonists are in his aching, twangy narratives. Songs reach towering peaks of cascading, over-driven guitar chords and pounding drums, only to slip seamlessly into lush valleys of acoustic strumming and sylvan slide guitar. Though definitely more rock than country, Lost Son nonetheless embodies all the best qualities of both and delivers them with an undeniable passion that references Tupelo's No Depression yet is entirely unique. --Adem TepedelenCustomer Reviews:
3.5 stars. A definite grower but the later albums are better.......2005-07-20
The first thing that strikes me is that the poor man's Uncle Tupelo comparisons seem right but only about this album (maybe earlier ones - but I haven't heard them). Lost Son does sound a lot like No Depression or rather like someone doing their version of No Depression and although they don't do a bad job they aren't as good.
Initially I was not impressed I am not really a big fan of No Depression although I like the less punky Uncle Tupelo stuff. Much of this album has heavy slashing guitars and I am not a fan of this in alt-country music.
However the lyrics really do stick in the head and transport you to the dark, bleak places where the characters exist. The stories often leave blanks and you can't help but imagine what had gone on before the song or after it. Willy Vlautin's voice is not the strongest and that is no bad thing. You can't imagine a better voice singing these songs.
Something about the songs brought me back to them and eventually the songs started to grow on me. The melodies which had been hidden amongst the heavy guitars started to reveal themselves and before long I quite enjoyed the album.
It will never be my favourite Richmond Fontaine album and just as I got into tracks such as Cascades, Fifteen year old kid............., and Pinkerton I went out and bought the truly wonderful Winnemucca and Lost Son sadly took a back seat but because of it introducing me to Richmond Fontaine it will always have a place in my heart.
Ignore the derivative Tupelo comparisons.......2000-03-10
Dark, dark, dark.......2000-02-25
While "Lost Son" does not approach any of UT's albums in quality, it surpasses UT in the darkness of the lyrics and the stark contrasts in the musical styles on the album. The lyrics tell vivid stories of death, deceit, murder, prostitution, muggings, alcoholism (you know, all the great things in life.) These bleak stories are centered around rural life in the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. They are vivid enough that I found myself thinking about the hapless characters in the songs hours after I finished listening to the album. The music ranges from EXTREMELY loud punk with a rusty rural sound to slow, lilting acoustic chords that you can fall asleep to. Richmond Fontane even runs this range of styles in one song!
Bottom line is, this album will probably be more interesting to you if you are a fan of Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression" and "Still Feel Gone" albums. "Lost Son" is a new interpretation of those classic albums. I wouldn't recommend buying this album if you aren't familiar with those two albums; it is a very dark and moody album with a musical style that is unique to them and Uncle Tupelo. Go buy "No Depression" and/or "Still Feel Gone", and if you like those albums, keep Richmond Fontane's "Lost Son" in mind.

Grainger was one of music's true originals. Folk-song collector, bandmaster, composer of quirkily original orchestral and choral music, his works have yet to be fully appreciated--or even cataloged. The problem was that he liked to keep his performance options open, and generally produced several versions of the same piece, some of which were complete rewrites (and therefore new works), while others were modest rescorings. The choral music largely consists of folk tune and popular song arrangements that Grainger collected on his travels through the English and Irish countryside. You owe it to yourself to hear them; they are, one and all, delightful. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:

Better than Chandos 'The Grainger Edition'.......2007-01-23
I love this CD! .......2004-10-08
Many of you may recognize I'm Seventeen Come Sunday. Grainger's fun, rollicking arrangement features a stunning brass ensemble and orchestra accompaniment - one of the essential ingredients in many of his folk-song settings, including The Merry Wedding, a bridal dance set to poems from the Faeroe Islands. Remove the orchestra in these tunes, and somehow the soul of the song is missing. However, there are several a cappella arrangements in this recording as well. Brigg Fair and Mo Nighean Dubh are two of these; the former features a tenor soloist reciting the familiar "For it's meeting is a pleasure, and parting is a grief, but an unconstant lover is worse than any thief" amid other stanzas about meeting his love at a fair in August. The mournful melody makes one wonder if he is possible regretting an indiscretion that cost him his true love. Grainger's gorgeous a cappella arrangement of the Gaelic melody in Mo Nighean Dubh is set to words by John Park, and is full of rich harmonies and strong dynamic changes that match the text. The wordless, a cappella setting of Irish Tune from County Derry is familiar to everyone - it is the tune we know as Danny Boy or Londonderry Air. An identical setting was done for band, and both settings feature a section where the melody transfers to the tenors or the low brass. Very unusual, especially for bands. An exquisite arrangement of this well-loved melody.
Love Verses from The Song of Solomon is perhaps the most gorgeous setting of this Biblical text. Grainger did not choose the somewhat overused "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away" text, instead opting for the perhaps more descriptive and personal sections in chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2. Scored for tenor, baritone, and mezzo-soprano solos, choir, and orchestra, the rich harmonies and Eastern flavor of the work features sweeping choral passages and brilliant climaxes of extraordinarily beautiful sound. The text partners perfectly with the yearning solo, choral, and orchestral parts.
Shallow Brown, for mezzo-soprano soloist and men's choir, tells the tale of a woman's lover, who is leaving her alone as he sails the seas. You can hear the unshed tears in her voice as the ship gets farther away; the men's choir, representing the ship's crew, gradually decrescendos as they travel farther from shore. The orchestra paints an incredibly vivid picture of the swell and surge of the ocean's waves, imitating the intensity of the current, carrying the woman's love away.
Father and Daughter is a rather horrific story, couched in a happy dance-tune, set for double choir and orchestra. The male soloists represent the tense question-and-answer session between the father and daughter, while the choirs obliviously sing the jolly text of this Faeroe Island dancing ballad, "Blithely dance the measure, all ye knights and swains so merrily." The bloody ending to this tale of lies and deceit is foreshadowed by the chaotic unraveling of the orchestra and choir parts. Grainger used this "unraveling" technique in The Bride's Tragedy as well; a heartbreaking story of two lovers drowned while trying to escape a jilted bridegroom and his angry kin. The story is almost Shakespearean in its complicated plot, and, like many Shakespearean tragedies, the terrible ending could have been avoided if everything had gone according to plan. I appreciate the flawed personalities of the characters in the story - their raw emotions are portrayed beautifully in Grainger's arrangement. For example, the bride furiously expresses her anger and frustration to her lover because he did not take her away the day before the wedding, as planned: "My lamp was lit yestreen, Willie, my window gate was wide: but ye came not nigh me, till day came by me and made me not your bride." Another element that makes The Bride's Tragedy so incredible is the second section of the piece - it could almost be called a second movement, it is so different from the first. This section begins when the lovers are overcome by the waves and begin to drown. The tempo slows and the voices take on an unearthly, far-away quality that seems to describe the floating of the bodies underwater and the loss of consciousness as death approaches. Rather gruesome, but certainly emotional and uncomfortably frank. This track is my favorite on the CD.
Scotch Strathspey and Reel is a blending of six Scotch and Irish tunes together with the familiar sea-chanty "What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor" in stunning, chaotic harmony. This setting seems to be incredibly difficult to sing; I therefore find the performance of the men's choir quite impressive. I also appreciate the performance of The Lost Lady Found, an English dance-folksong sung in the original Lincolnshire dialect and style, which is as far from our idea of "proper British pronunciation" as one may get. This so-called improper pronunciation continues in Danny Deever, using words from Rudyard Kipling's Barrack-room Ballads. This grisly-comic "hanging" ballad is scored for small choir or baritone soloist, men's choir, and orchestra. A dramatic march set in dialogue format, telling the story of a traitor's hanging. The drama and upbeat pace continue in Tribute to Foster, Grainger's setting of Camptown Races. The second half of the piece contains additional verses written by Grainger himself, recollecting the times when his own mother sung the song to him as a lullaby.
Another haunting melody is presented in The Three Ravens, an old English set for baritone solo, mixed chorus and five clarinets. The unusual text about a knight and a doe is apparently an allusion to the crucified Christ and his mother Mary. Dramatic dynamic swells and ghostly wails make this another remarkable creation by Grainger.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about this CD; I know you will enjoy the recording even more! You will not be disappointed!
