No Fat Here, Plenty of Hog!.......2006-12-21

Well, I gotta tell ya...I've got every Black Oak Arkansas album ever put out but I would definitely say that High On The Hog is the Crown Jewel. It has the most flavorable tunes to croon to and sums up the spirit of what this band was all about. Dirty's driving bass lines opens several of the songs here and only wets your appetite for the diverse intertwining solos of their triple guitar attack. Plenty of wah wah petal, slide and even some finger lickin acoustic that makes you wanna run out and buy a cabin and a 100 acres of land to live the life that these lyrics convey. Damn, what can I say, listening to High On The Hog just makes you feel good and alive! Who but BOA could come up with song titles like Swimmin In Quicksand and Moonshine Sonata. The latter is a great instrumental with intertwining solos that bleed emotion with every note picked. Back To The Land and High 'N' Dry have a down home country feel to it....you can just picture these guys playing this on the front porch of their Ozark cabins. If you want to hear what crooning is all about, then the Dandy will pour it on you during High 'N' Dry. Happy Hooker is a real cooker and has a strong slow bluesy rhytmn to it and the lyrics are just a hoot. This is foot stompin music at it's finest. Movin and Red Hot Lovin are very fast, upbeat and powerful songs. The order of the songs on this album are perfect...I think this is why this release just simply knocks my socks off. It's also produced by Tom Dowd, you know. Folks, there simply is not a bad tune on this one! To me, it is the definitive Black Oak Arkansas album and truly one of the great classic rock albums of the early 70s. You'll love the album cover and you'll want to run out and buy you a washboard and croon along with the Dandy. After that, just run to the highest peak in the Ozarks you can find and yell...Go Jim Dandy, Go! After 30 years of listening to this, all I can say is "Why Shouldn't I Smile, So Many Happy Miles".

great southern rock.......2006-01-11

This is a good album by a good band. Black Oak has got to be one of the best and unique sounding southern rock bands ever. They combine elements of rock, country and boogie together. The singer is one of a kind, you either love his voice or hate it there is no in between. It's scratchy with a little southern flavor thrown in. Anyways on with this album. It has great rock /boogie tracks like swimming in quicksand, mad man, jim dandy and red hot lovin. It also has a couple of nice country sounding songs like back to the land and high an' dry. Overall this is a good cd so if you like southern rock you will surely like these guys.

Jim Dandy is a Ras-cewl! .......2005-06-01

Now, some of y'all don't know I got me a lil' ol' man who fronts a tribute band to Zeppelin and Black Oak Arkansas called Stariway to Arkansas. He legally changed his name to Jimbob Dandyplant after enought folks done told him he looks like the other two. He's got himself long blond hair, eyes of blue, and a swimmer's body just like them before Jimmy and Robert done turned into 50 year-old fatsos with Just for Men blond hair.

Ana-hoo, I don't think he respects me much, although I dress up like his idol's old girlfriend Ruby Starr. He done caught me at the edge of the stage singin' "Jim Dandy is a ras-cewl" and stopped the band to scream at me in front of everybody in the club. "It's Jim Dandy to the rescue, ya bimbo!" Everybody laughed while I cried, but I still kept dancin' 'causin' that song rocks my booty off. Unfortunately, he dedicated "Happy Hooker" to me after we *made up* during first break, but I jez can't get enough. How can you say no to a dude who likes a band that paved the way for the likes of George Thoroughgood, the Georgia Satellites, Aerosmith, and David Lee Roth, only to be left behind as a footnote in rock history while their avid students reaped the glory they themselves still deserve?

I think about great, ballsy blues numbers with the cherry bomb of funk thrown in, and can't deny the infectiousness of "Movin'," and the almost metallic kiester crunch of "Mad Man," and the words highly underrated come to mind. True, Jim Dandy Mangrum was never a fantastic voice, but I'll be gosh-durned iffin' he didn't have as much carnal appeal as that cross dresser from Van Halen who stole everything he knows from him. An' besidin' all of that, what's a whiskey burned voice with the right 'tude when it's accompanied by three great axe-slingers, a hell of a drummer in Tommy Aldridge--who's played for everyone and their bros--and some good old southern blues and country roots funkified?

I'm still at a crossroads, y'all. Jimbob Dandyplant caught me at home with all three gee-tarists from a Skynyrd tribute band called Jacksonville Kid. Looks like I'm "Swimmin' in Quicksand." Funk-ay!

When Robbie Robertson and the rest of the Band split into two camps in the late '70s, who ever thought Robertson would get the worst of the deal? After all, Robertson had written just about every important song the Band had ever recorded and his biting Stratocaster work was essential to the Canadian group's sound. As it turned out, Robertson's solo albums have been embarrassing duds, while his ex-partners have released two superb efforts as the Band: Jericho (1993) and High on the Hog. Still Better Than Most of What's Out There.......2006-07-07

OK, so the re-formed Band's second low-budget disc wasn't quite up to the quality of their first, "Jericho," but there's still a lot to like here: Danko's beautiful falsetto on the gorgeous Blondie Chaplin tune "Where I Should Always Be"; the bluesy "Back to Memphis"; a slow-cooking "Crazy Mama"; the fast-boiling "Love You Too Much"; and another archival Richard Manual recording. If only other groups with 10 times the budget could consistently come up with music this good.

What a rare treat: a disc which begins with Levon barking about a "Smilin' Mona Lisa / [Who] loaded up my Visa / [Then] took the bartender home" and concludes with a most geriatric guest singer urging listeners to "shake yourselves / like I shake mine." Suitable for evenings around the hearth or long distance roadtrippin'. As hard to lose as a tattoo. Released in 1996 with the high-end assistance of Professor Louie, and bringing in some instrumental help from the bullpen -- Jim Weider on six string, Randy Ciarlante on skins, Richard Bell on keys -- it has a thoroughly contemporary sound. Levon and Rick are in fine form vocally, swapping whole tracks like they once swapped lines, even crafting a bit of a duet on #3. Richard is resurrected to carry one song home, "She Knows," as only he could. Garth doesn't disappoint; as all fans would expect, his talented presence adds a most welcome dimension to the music. Each song boogies! A well-crafted gift to us mortals from the gentlemen of rock & soul.

Robbie deserves better.......2006-05-30

I too was astounded to read Mr. Himes' comments on Robbie Robertson's first two solo albums...the first one has several fantastic songs and Storyville is truly a classic...i played it for three months straight and the songs would not leave my head....Any reviewer who would make such a comment really is not worth reading any more....it is simply ridiculous....and by the way, I love the Band and will always love them....before and after Robbie Robertson left...but let's at least be fair....

The Band. Up`s and downs on a variable CD........2006-02-09

The Band is a great band, and still has a small amount of magic back. Some tracks shines more than others, but there are to many tracks who dissapoints. Track 1 Stand Up, in it`s "walkalong" tempo glimmers right trough. It shows creativity and has flair. Track 2 Back to Memphis is a letdown, sorry to say. It`s too slow, and a weird vocaljob that sounds like Bob Dylan on a bad day, doesn`t help either.
Track 3 Where I should always be, has more power as a nice ballad, with a very "airy and open" soundpicture all trough. Track 4 Free your mind, is a more uptempo song, with a "bigband beat" that has a certain "sting". It delivers, but nothing special . But hey, on Track 5 Forever Young we are back in "god ole Band mood". This has the trademarks of a The Band. It`s written by Bob Dylan, and it`s a tribute to Jerry Garcia. Garth Hudson`s organ play sneak`s in to your`e soul, as on every "great" Band song`s. Track 6 The High Prize of Love, is a little let down, once again. It`s very "muddy" and to distorted to have a great listen too. Track 7 Crazy Mama, is a different cup of tea. As a blues rocker this one delivers, with a good strong backbeat that pushes the song forward in the right direction to the end. Track 8 I must love you to much, is a fast rocker, that has a enough tempo and beat to make you put on your`e rock and roll shoes.
Track 9 She knows, is a traditonal ballad, which delivers in a slow jazzy mood, but it`s not up there. It`s anyway nice to
listen to as a "late night gem" but nothing special. Track 10 Rumble Jungel, is a "musical rumble to the jungle" and sounds like it, with a weird vocal to carry it trough. Track 11 Young Blood, is a Leiber/ Stoller Classic. The Band does it in a "slow up tempo beat" . Quite okei. Anyway. This is The band, with`too many up`s and downs on a variable CD.

Depends on what you're looking for: NOT like Jericho.......2004-06-08

If you're looking for the good-timey, not-too-heavy-on-the-lyrics, straight-ahead music Band, you'll enjoy this. But Jericho it's not: if you're looking for more thoughtful lyrics, more complex arrangements, that's the album to get from this period. Overall, this feels most like Rick's album. Fun but not life-changing.

Kevin Fowler formerly of Dangerous Toys.......2005-01-17

Who knew after the first Dangerous Toys album that Kevin would branch out on his own and radically change styles of music. I bought his CD when he called his band Thunderfoot and they were more southern rock back then. I didn't know until recently that Kevin is a country artist and I still think he rocks and sounds awesome. This is a must have for country fans as Kevin stays true to the original country sound.

Great songs on another great CD........2002-09-24

Kevin Fowler is truly something original. This guy can really write great songs. After buying Beer, Bait and Ammo (Highly recommended) and seeing him and his band play twice at Billy Bob's in FT Worth I was hooked. You will find yourself singing
along with his melodies after a few listenings to any of his CDs.
High on the Hog is loaded with great tunes.I especially like the tunes, Not Lovin Anymore, Tall drink of water and the great remake of Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls. This guy has an original style all his own that is a lot different than most of the contemporary country music that is released these days. His voice to me has it's own originality to it.He doesn't sound like anyone else. I have seen Kevin and his band twice live and let me tell you he can deliver these songs live as well if not better than on CD. He puts on a great entertaining show, and I was singing along the whole set. So if you want some real down to earth homemade Texas music I think you should give this one a try.

i was listening to XM satellite radio channel XM-12 when i heard this guy sing beer bait ammo. XM-12 plays artist such as kevin fowler who dont [polish apples]in nashville to get their songs played. it doesnt get any better than XM!!!!

Get More Than You Bargained For.......2002-08-13

I'm not sure if I'm a bit prejudiced since I live just outside of Austin and this guy is from Austin, or if I'm just lucky that he gets local airplay so I heard him before I bought the CD. Anyway, you know how sometimes you buy a CD for one song, just that one song? Then after you burn a hole through that section of the disk you hope that maybe, just maybe, there's another good tune on the disk. Well this is one where I really lucked out - it's loaded with great tunes. It's the kind of CD you can slide into your stereo (in your pickup, of course) and sing along. It has a handful of up-tempo tunes, a handful of ballads, and I think I remember a waltz or two (don't let that scare you, they're good).

This guy also knows how to write lyrics. They are the catchy type you immediately want to learn (helps when singing along). And you can even understand them when they get fast. They may not all be his - I recognize one song from one of my old Queen albums - but they are clean and clever.

I have a feeling he will get compared to guys like Pat Green and Robert Earl Keen. I'm not sure if that is a good comparison or not. But I would say that if you like them, chances are you're money is well spent on Kevin Fowler.

Workmanlike independent Texas country.......2002-08-07

The early days of country music are alive and well in Texas in more ways than one. Not only does the Lone Star state's indie scene produce music that remains closer to the twangy, everyman roots of country's hillside origins, but the emphasis of touring and entertaining over recording harken back to the days when radio shows (most especially the Grand Ole Opry) and records were promotional devices for live performances. Musicians were full-blown entertainers, rather than creatures of the studio and the media.

The Austin-based Fowler tours a Texas circuit of clubs, honky-tonks, bars, schools, dancehalls and fairs that is a virtual world unto itself. Regional stars like Fowler, along with Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Clay Blaker, Jack Ingram, and Bruce Robison (the latter two of whom are making bids for broader stardom with their releases on Sony's Lucky Dog label), are crowd favorites who make music that's tailored for live performance. Their songs combine danceable tempos (two-steps, waltzes, ballads) with sharp lyrics that are mindful of country's classic subjects (lovin', drinkin', cheatin') but with a contemporary sensibility. They're not so much rewriting the classic country catalog as borrowing its language to write about current topics.

Fowler has a pleasant, husky voice, and even when he applies it to up-tempo tunes there's a sense of balladry in his singing. Perhaps it's the remnants of his hard-rock roots (notably with Austin's Dangerous Toys) showing through his cowboy hat and pearl-snapped western shirt. His lyrics lean to the clever, ala Charlie Robison, but not quite as devilish. Tunes like "The Lord Loves the Drinkin' Man" and "Ol' What's Her Name" are sure to be sing-along favorites on a Texas Saturday honky-tonk night, and the Tejano flavors of "Senorita Mas Fina" and "All the Tequila in Tijuana" (the latter sporting the patron saint of Texas country, Willie Nelson, on guitar and vocals) add a nice touch. Fowler's country transposition of Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls," like several other Queen songs have been transposed before, is nearly seamless. If only Freddy Mercury had lived to hear it!

Fowler's workmanlike honky-tonk country is miles beyond anything coming out of Nashville these days, and the fans who turn out to see him on tour (and those who can't make it to Texas, of course) will no doubt enjoy this recording.

The Keynote Elements to the 'grounhog' Sound Remain Intact; Blues Based Songs with Mcphee's Raw Vocals and Inventive Guitar Work. Disc One Compiles the Studio Material and features Tracks Form Mcphee's Solo Recordings as Well as Seven Tracks from the Album Muddy Waters Songbook, a Personal Selection of Some of the Groundhogs Favorites from the Bluses Master. Disc Two Selects Tracks Taken from Two of the Best of the Groundhogs Live Offering, "Grounhog Night" and "The Razors Edge Tour" which was Recorded in 1985.
