4 out of 5 stars Review taken from http://www.aversionline.com.......2003-07-24

Upon the first listen this record sort of blew by me and didn't really do much for me. Harkonen has always been hit or miss in my opinion. I wasn't into their old full-length on Wreck-Age, but I thought their more recent EP's were pretty damn good. So I never know what to expect. This record churns out more of their very rhythmic material with a good dose of dissonance in some of the guitar textures, and after a few listens it's really growing on me more and more. I'm not really sure why I missed it the first time around, but this is some energetic and creative material. It rocks, yeah. But there's more going on under the surface, granted the bottom line is still a good song is a good song. "Baristas Get Stalked" has a little bit of subtle melody with a generally more creative and moving approach that really blows me away - definitely my favorite song on the disc. "Caseydriver" uses lots of noisy feedback behind the framework, and similarly tracks like "Easy Prey" even throw some unexpected experimental textures into the background for short periods of time, creating an odd ambient sort of hum that works very well with the driving force of the chord progressions and such. "All This Time I Thought Your Name Was Cool Dude" builds on this even more, with lots of synth tones (I assume) and layered vocals over nothing but massive drums and bass. Awesome. The recording is slick. The guitars are nice and textured with perfect clarity, a great distorted bass tone is present along with totally natural and warm percussion, and I really like the dry force of the yelling vocals as well. I don't think I would change anything at all other than to possibly make the bass more noticeable. Very nice work. Visually things are pretty wild, with lots of busy overlapping textures of light blue, black, and metallic gold, a few interesting band shots (including a photo of the three members' torsos clad in t-shirts with their individual faces on them), and some crisp text amidst it all. And don't forget the bunnies (look at the record, you'll understand). The lyrics are all printed vertically in metallic gold down the long stretch of panels that fold out from the booklet. All of the songs are pretty odd in content, and some of the tracks are shockingly brief in the lyrical department. "All this time I thought your name was cool dude, But it wasn't you, All this time I thought your name was true blue, But it wasn't you." The liner notes mention "live footage" and an "enhanced portion", but when I popped the disc into the ol' computer I got nothing but audio. Weird. But anyway, this is a great record. A great full-length. So I'm pleased to find that the promising work of their EP's hasn't been lost here, granted the record does run a tasteful length of about 35 minutes. Check it out...

3 out of 5 stars 3 and a half stars seems more appropriate........2003-07-14

I hate to say it, but this cd just doesn't have staying power. the songs are easy to get into, with nice solid grooves and some very satisfying moments(for example, what sounds like "are you mad? are you mad about that?" yelled at the end of "introducing the creeker sneaker"). however, after a few listens, "shake harder boy" just doesn't seem to have much left to offer.
it's a nice experience while it lasts, but I'm not often compelled to put it back in the old discman.
don't write off harkonen completly though, they wrote some pretty strong songs for this cd, and definitely took a big step from their self titled debut. harkonen is a solid band, and they may become much more

5 out of 5 stars this isn't "hardcore".......2003-02-26

Come on, let's face it. Harkonen doesn't fall under your stereotypical categories and what-have-yous. No. They're much more. Harkonen is a rock band and rock they will thank you very much. This is down and dirty sludge rock and I love every second of it. Harkonen proves that simplicity works. They cut right to the chase and give you super silly awesome riffs that make you think, "man, I could've thought of that." But you didn't. They did.

Oh and after listening to the final track "Settle Here", you'll find the words- "You're solid rock!" escaping from your throat as you walk down the street for no apparent reason besides the fact that now you've come to an understanding that Harkonen is your new Rabbi. See you in Temple.

3 out of 5 stars Good muisc, not so good vocals.......2003-02-15

I sort of have mixed reviews about this CD. While the music is heavy, the way I like it, there's something missing with the vocals. The vocals are typical hardcore music style yells, and maybe that's why I want a little more then what is offered here. Each song, the vocalist uses the exact same type of yell, with these prolonged vowels, and fluxuation of the voice.

The music rocks behind him at all times, but the voice gives me a slight headache. But this CD will be played still, because the music behind him goes places other CD's dont, in terms of harmonies, melodies, filters, etc.

SO two bands These arms are snakes (amazing I loved them from the first time I saw them open for the blood brothers) and Harkonen (their ep is so-so) are on this thing, and I got it back when it came out cuz again, I was a huge fan of TAAS. Anyway, wow this was awesome. Tracks 1 and 3 are TAAS and 2-4 are Harkonen, the last track is both. This thing doesnt let up. I just kept listening to it over and over. Harkonen broke up, too bad, they were really getting good. Catch These arms are snakes live, and buy their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars THE "WHY-IS-THIS-SO-OLD-AND-STILL-NO-REVIEW" REVIEW.......2002-09-23

I saw these guys in Seattle for the first time at Botch's Last show. They are absolutely amazing. Not over-the-top complex like , for instance , Botch , but SOOOO POWERFUL. For a kid who grew up listening(and worshipping) Nirvana and Helmet , they are perfect. Great riffs , great drumming , great voice. I don't know his name , but he's got one of the best screams; it's not that growly stuff(not my thing) , and it's not thin...it just fits perfectly in with the music. Buy this record , and let it live in your cd player for a bit. Can't wait for the new record. So say again...THIS IS GREAT RIFF, POWERFUL , PASSIONATE , HARDCORE MUSIC , NO BS , HONEST AND PURE...(buy this record)
