Recorded in 1969 and released in 1970, this Moody Blues album captures the band in all of their glorious excess. With intellectualized lyrics, overblown arrangements, and rampant experimentation, the Moody Blues still manage to create an evocative, psychedelic musical experience. The recurring "Eyes Of A Child" is a tender ballad with glorious vocal harmonies. All of the moody men provide compositions; between the five of them and a variety of instruments, they emulate a much larger ensemble. Mellotrons meld with electric guitars and various woodwinds for a grandiose, orchestral-rock approach. Very English sounding and very ambitious, this record catches the band just before they collapsed under their own weight. A representative period piece, there are several worthwhile moments here amidst all the grandeur. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars Part of a Love of a Hope That Exists................2007-07-12

Things appear.... then they disappear for your poor Metamorpho. There is so much out there and it all flows by in a wink of an eye. And, certainly there is a connectivity to things but possibly without any rational motive why. But, why listen to me when your t.v. is nearby? Metamorpho- replaced by modern flat-screen technology. What is next-you ponder? Will the world end? Possibly. But no need to fret. If you stand on this subway platform long enough, another world will surely come by to take you to new adventures.
This might be an excellent intro to this c.d. It has been in my archives for decades. Do I date myself? Please don't tell. But, in the long run, it all doesn't matter you see. This, I think, is one of the finest profferings by the Moodies. It is a mind float for sure- but such a pleasant one for certain.
Thinking about this album- what strikes me most is the need to look at the world through "The Eyes of A Child". In some ways it's a beckoning to return to the awe and simplicity of a truer, purer outlook on the world. You know the one - the one we all inhabited with joy until the cruel realities of adulthood set in. The Moodies with this outing, try to get to the essence of our realities and existence. It's not really a matter of never thinking you'd never live to be a hundred, or a million. It's a matter that you'd never thought you'd live to be a child again. And, this is what the songs convey and bring to us on this exquisite set.
The songs themselves- suggest scenarios of thoughts and dreams on all our journeys through life and each one of them hits into our concious (and sub-concious) minds on some level. We all travel on "Eternity Road", never knowing what is around the next bend. And, indeed, we all want that "Candle of Life" to burn ever more slowly. We want to learn. To grow. And the Moodies urge us to find the love within ourselves to sojourn on.
I cannot and will not explain each song on this c.d. I don't think I can. Each song touches some facet of human emotion and yearning towards some movement towards personal evolution and enlightenment. Musically, the individual songs blend into one another- some soft and yearning- some insistent and joyous. Some melancholy and some hopeful. A perfect mirroir to life itself.
But, oh what a pleasant and comfortable musical scenario they have created for us. If half of these reflections flow through to your conciousness, then, joyfully, you too are on your way to being a reflective seer. And don't forget- I do give lessons locally at your Community College via cable hook-up. There is a small service charge, of course. But who can quibble when such valuable knowledge is just a credit card away?
In any event- this is a gem and very worth your time. It is contemplative, reflective pop at it's best and in the Moodies own genre which is in and of itself.
I would definitely bury this one in a time capsule for my children's children's children's children (and then some). In the meantime- they'll have to wait. I'm not giving it up that easily!
Now- let me return to my July 4th bar-b-que. Yes it's still going on! You have to ask? Metamorpho is not a lightweight you know!

Enlightenment at a reasonable cost---your own Metamorpho

5 out of 5 stars Worthy To Be Passed Down To Posterity.......2007-06-12

I cannot add anything new to the great reviews already presented here. I am just going to state that this is a truly outstanding album with nary a bad track on it. The Moody Blues were at the top of their game on every level. The lyrics, vocals, arrangements, and musicianship are superb and all 5 men made major contributions to this masterpiece.

Way to go magnificent Moodies!!

5 out of 5 stars "Children Of Paradise!" :).......2007-06-04

To start off, what a topnotch remastering job on this splendid release! :)

One thing I'd like to know is how The Moody Blues produced the sound effect of the rocket blasting off, at the beginning of Graeme Edge's "Higher And Higher?!" It was a treat, however, to find out, from the interview within the CD booklet, that The Moodies conjured up the sound effect themselves! Nice job on the "radio-to-live-in-person" effects on Mike Pinder's narration, as well as Justin Hayward's stereophonic guitar solos, near the end of the song (Best experienced through headphones). Graeme really hits home with both his poetry and drumming on this energetic album opener!

The harp like effects that introduce John Lodge's "Eyes Of A Child - Part One" are lovely, and the song does an excellent job of progressing from a peaceful tone to a more lively one, most notably through the group's combined vocals. Spooky but well executed mellotrons on this track, too!

Ray Thomas' pleasant-sounding composition, "Floating," gives me a natural high, whenever I listen to it, and Ray's heavily echoed vocals make him sound as though he is delivering the tune from The Heavens! On a rare occasion, Ray would sing in falsetto, near the end of this track!

John's "Eyes Of A Child - Part Two" sounds like an earlier version of "Question," from "A Question Of Balance," and it really rocks, too! Listen for John's brief falsetto chant, echoing the word "Light," in the middle of the song. :) Both parts of "Eyes Of A Child" are equally enjoyable, to my ears. :)

Justin Hayward's "I Never Thought I'd Live To Be A Hundred/Million" create excellent links between the surrounding songs ... The guitars are well played on both pieces and each tune sounds amazing through headphones. I get a mental image of Justin playing his acoustic guitar in a dark room lit by a single candle only, when I listen to both of these tracks. :)

"Beyond" features more amazing sound effects, in between the "rock and roll" parts of this mysterious instrumental (The second set of sound effects sounds a little like the intro to "Strawberry Fields Forever," by The Beatles!). I always thought of the rock and roll part of the song representing a space shuttle traveling to other planets, and the parts that featured the sound effects representing the different planets where the spaceship would land. :) The stereo trickery on the "rockin'" parts of this tune blew me away, featuring all instrumental activity being pushed towards one end of the stereo field and then, a little later on, being pushed towards the other end ... Another standout headphone experience!

The Heavenly intro to Mike Pinder and John Lodge's "Out And In" sounds like a continuation of "Beyond" ... The mellotrons really stand out on this track, including the beautifully soaring intro (Makes me think of sunlight beating down on my face, as I close my eyes). Mike delivers some nice vocals with his double-tracked "Out And In" harmonies, at the tail end of the song.

Justin's rockin' outer space number, "Gypsy," features excellent double-tracked Justin Hayward vocals and a wickedly cool lead guitar scattered throughout the song. Lots of instrumental activity going on here, just like on the previous two offerings, and everything blends together just right ... I love the way the mellotrons come right at you during the "Left without a hope of coming home" parts of the song! Nice arrangement. :)

Ray's "Eternity Road" includes a pretty neat "Beatle-esque" double-tracked lead guitar solo from Justin, mid song, as well as powerful vocals and a fantastic flute solo near the end of the song, courtesy of Ray ... The flute solo is just as well executed as the flute solos heard on "Legend Of A Mind," from "In Search Of The Lost Chord," and "Don't You Feel Small," from "A Question Of Balance." The ascending mellotron parts, between the verses, and especially near the end of this song, are well delivered and make for another natural high on the album. :)

Sounds like both Justin and John collaborate on vocals for John's "Candle Of Life," something they would do many years later throughout the late 1980's albums "The Other Side Of Life" and "Sur La Mer." To hear something amusing on this track, move the "balance" dial (or switch) all the way to the right channel (speaker) on your stereo system and you can hear a delayed echo from the mellotron beginning at 2:33 in the song! :)

"Sun Is Still Shining" is a nice, relaxing song by Mike, and I like how the intro to the track features a guitar feedback effect, like the one that is heard at the beginning of "To Share Our Love," from "On The Threshold Of A Dream" ... By the way, this particular sound freaked out my cat Pickles, when I played this album, recently! :) Anyway, I love the mellotron and sitar combo, and the strong percussion, featured near the closing of the song, is brilliantly executed!

"Watching And Waiting," to me, is just as lovely and enjoyable as "Nights In White Satin," from "Days Of Future Passed." My father once told me that, from what he got out of the lyrics, he interpreted that the Earth was trying to express itself, if the planet could talk ("But don't be alarmed by my fields and my forests"). It's a beautiful, tranquil, and relaxing Justin/Ray ballad, featuring marvelous mellotrons all around. The piano and acoustic guitars blend in well, and the bass guitar licks sound brilliant after the parts of the song that go, "There's no one here to stop you trying." To top it all off, Justin also delivers another "5 Gold Star" vocal performance. :)

Children of all ages will really appreciate "To Our Children's Children's Children!" Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

5 out of 5 stars Their best........2007-04-18

If you are a Moody Blues afficianado, I have no new insight or commentary for you. You know the place of this album among their work.

If you are rather unfamiliar with their work, be advised that this is what many of their fans consider to be their crowning achievement.

Thematic and haunting (with its light moments). Interestingly, there is not a single Top 40 tune in the bunch. I've never tired of listening to it.

It being well over 30 years since I first heard this album (on a cassette boom box in military barracks), I realize now more than then that the title was chosen with utmost care. Of all of the Moody Blues work, they knew when they completed this that it was most worthy of being handed down through their generations as their example of achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Moody Blues album?.......2007-03-15

I was utterly into the Moody Blues in high school, many a late night spent with headphones on disappearing into their moodscapes. Having passed another thirty years, though, I moved on to other things to listen to and to play, music I'd critically consider far more complex and challenging. But as for most of us, the music that touched my heart as a youth retains its power to move me -- so, turning the big five-oh a couple of months ago and feeling more than a bit ready to reminisce, I started listening to my old albums again, including the Moodies.

With new ears and a more aged perspective, I've found my preferences have changed. Sure, I still like it all. (And by all, I refer to what some others write about as "The Big Seven" or something like that, which I'd agree really comprise all they did that really matters.) "Days of Future Passed" still stands on its quirky (some would say pretentious) own (but I love it), and of course it has "Nights in White Satin". "Seventh Sojourn" is more guitar-rockish, and I like that, too. But the album that stands out, I think, is "To Our Children's Children's Children". Why? Two simple reasons: it's the most coherent from beginning to end, and it's the most "atmospherish". And what is it that makes the Moody Blues the Moody Blues more than the "atmosphere" they create?

A word on sound quality: I used to sell high-end equipment, and have a top-notch basic stereo system. When I listened to the vinyl, I reached the above conclusions despite the fact that the sound quality was HORRIBLE. That's why I decided to get the CD, so I could hear what it really sounds like. I hesitated between getting the SACD and the standard 2-channel remastered version, and got the latter. I can't speak for those with SACD systems, but for those with only two channels: the cheaper one has absolutely fantastic sound quality, no need to get the SACD version. For anyone with the album who wants to hear things they haven't heard in this before, it's well worth the investment ($8, sheesh)!

Amazon.com essential recording

Before this 1965 blues-rock masterpiece, the Stones were the best of the many British bands living out their Muddy Waters dress-up fantasies. They continue giving new life to old songs, such as Arthur Alexander's soul tearjerker "You Better Move On" and the Nat King Cole standard "Route 66," but there are several exciting new developments. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger discover their songwriting talents, coming up with the enduring "Get Off My Cloud" and "As Tears Go By" as well as the underappreciated "I'm Free." And drummer Charlie Watts focuses the swing-jazz fills that have defined the Stones as much as the writing, voices, and guitars. --Steve Knopper

Amazon.com

Dig how even a tossed-together cash-in by the Stones' U.S. label--the group's third American album of 1965--ends up smoking like all but their very best. They invent thrash with the opener, "She Said Yeah" (a Specialty Records obscurity penned, under a pseudonym, by Sonny Bono!) before laying down a leering "Talkin' 'Bout You," a frenetic "I'm Movin' On" and their most consistent, varied list of originals yet. Dig, too, how even "As Tears Go By" sounds like a sneer in the midst of "Get Off of My Cloud," "Gotta Get Away," "I'm Free" and the dourly off-key "Blue Turns to Grey." --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars December's Children has too much filler.......2007-03-16

This is perhaps the weakest album in the Rolling Stones 60's catalog. But don't blame the band, this is the record companies fault. Sure there are some great tunes here like She Said Yeah, Get off of My Cloud, As Tears Go By and some decent tunes like You Better Move On and I'm Free. But there's just too much weak material, songs like Talking About You, Look What You've Done, The Singer Not the Song, Gotta Get Away and Blue Turns to Grey feel flat. Then the live renditions of Route 66 and I'm Movin' On are alright, but feel like fun filler.

December's Children (And Everybody's) ~ The Rolling Stones: 2 1/2 stars

5 out of 5 stars Their best early release in the US.......2007-02-02

Even though it's a US compilation of British leftovers that weren't on the previous US albums. No matter, this record plays as the Stones best and strongest pre-aftermath album.

2 out of 5 stars Not an SACD.......2007-01-31

I bought this because it is listed as an SACD.
What I was sent is a DSD disc. It does not register as an SACD on my player. It sounds miserable.
What gives, has the SACD been replaced by this other format?
It's one of my favorite Stones albums. I am not pleased.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best, but pretty important.......2007-01-16

December's Children comes off as a rather uneven document of the Stones' song-writing prowess and a scattershotrock record in its own right. Nonetheless, their identity as a band distinct from the British invasion clones really emerges on these tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Stupendously Fantastic.......2006-06-13

This is an absolute stunner of a record. The bad boys of Rock and Roll really go to town with Chuck Berry's "Talkin' About You," and Bobby Troup's "Route 66." The latter being one of the two live songs on the record. The timeless "As Tears Go By," written by Mick and Keith along with group manage Andrew Oldham," has got to be one of the signature songs of a generation. According to my folks, it was the Boomer's big make out song. Hey, I've made out to it too, the song really is timeless. The other Mick and Keith songs that I really like are "Blue Turns to Grey" and "Get off My Cloud." Brian's slide guitar on the live version of "I'm Moving On" is stupendous, in fact the whole record is stupendously fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-16

We borrowed this from the library so many times that I finally bought a copy for my daughter to own. Even us parents love it. It has many classic songs that I remember from my childhood and it's great to relive the memories again with my child.

5 out of 5 stars Best Children's CD ever!!!!.......2007-05-14

I used to listen to this CD with a little girl I was taking care. We love it!
Today I bought for my son and this is his favorite.
I think this is the best CD for kids ever.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" CD for all children.......2005-09-05

if you are looking for a CD with more than "a couple good songs" this CD is for you. A mellow CD with classics such as "Baby Beluga" and "House at Pooh Corner." You will not be sorry when you purchase this CD for your music-loving child. Great for toddlers and preschoolers!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD for kids and adults!.......2005-02-10

You won't regret buying this CD. It has so many great songs by great artists, that "Over the Rainbow" is one of the worst -- and that's really saying something. My favorites are "Jelly Man Kelly," "Baby Beluga" and "Skip to My Lou." I hate cheesy children's music -- but there's none of that here! You'll be humming along with your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Bundle With "Over The Rainbow With Joey" Book For Great Gift.......2004-06-11

This CD when given to a new parent with the beautiful board book, "Over The Rainbow With Joey" makes the perfect new baby gift. The classic soundtrack found on this CD with other favorites will be enjoyed by baby and parent and make lasting memories.

3 out of 5 stars A Remix? or what?.......2007-06-01

I loved Steve Miller's early work back in the days in San Francisco. I saw the group several times at the Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms. I had the original vinyl LP. It sounded great. This CD seems dead with no ambience that was in the original. Did they remix it or am I just dreaming?

1 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2007-03-12

Surprised he got a second album after this turkey. Sailor is a little better. Very indulgent, you never start with your Sgt. Pepper, can't understand who he thought he was on this debut album. Pesky sound effects, 2 minute buildups to dissappointing songs. A little off key in places.

4 out of 5 stars One of Steve's Best.......2007-01-11

Starts out kinda psychedelic with noises and all for the first minute or so then is very listen able. I bought this back when it was first released on LP. But eventually went to Cd's and LP's. This album has two driving upbeat songs I really like. It all blends into one another well. If you like a lot of versatile blues-rock music this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars The best Steve Miller album.......2006-08-04

This early incarnation of the Steve Miller Band with Boz Skaggs is a great example of Miller's early blues laced psychedelia, before slick production polished and perfected his sound. Highly recommended!

Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs and company create a trippy Melotron drenched masterpiece suite on side 1.
Side 2 is Blues and rock at it's the best album from the entire Haight Asbury scene, period.

Album Description

2 CD set. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even the milestone Days Of Future Passed in its elegance and vision. The Moodies were always capable of both songcraft and experimentalism, but this was the first time they combined them both successfully. Mike Pinder's dramatically arcing mellotron is the perfectly complement to the group's lush vocal harmonies, which are colored by rich acoustic guitar textures. Things open on a mind-bendingly psychedelic note with the electrical storm of 'Higher And Higher', but soon the waters calm. Justin Hayward's brief acoustic ballad 'I Never Thought I'd Live To Be A Hundred' is among the band's loveliest tunes, and it leads into 'Beyond', an ambitious instrumental that is the Moodies at their most progressive. Throughout the album, the mixture of winningly melodic balladry, poignant folk-rock and ambitious prog-rock leanings combine for what is one of the Moody Blues' most satisfying albums. Polydor. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Eyes Of A Child.......2007-07-10

Once again, let's start off with some of the issues raised by others. First, as far as the cover being lighter- it always was on the first editions of the album. The cover wasn't darkend until the time of reissues. For a good example of this, pull out This Is The Moody Blues and see for yourself. Second, as far as the sound being different, it's because this is taken from the old quad mix(four channel) and not the two channel stereo. To take full advantage of the quad feature, producer Tony Clarke remixed the album in late '71. To my ears, this IS the best sounding version as the sound is much clearer than even on the MoFi editions and with this version you actually get a bonus disc of alternate takes/mixes and some BBC stuff. Although, I know some will still perfer the MoFi versions as they are of the original stereo. This album has become a favorite of many and it's easy to see why. The album is strong from beginning to end. Starting with the cool blast off sounds of Higher And Higher to the wonderful and bittersweet Watching And Waiting. This is one of those albums whhere it's impossible to pick favorites. I should point out that the BBC stuff is now available on the Moodies BBC release.

5 out of 5 stars "Children Of Paradise," Deluxe Edition! :).......2007-06-04

*The following comments are in regard to the bonus tracks on this release. To read my opinions on the original content of this album, check out my review under:
"To Our Children's Children's Children" by The Moody Blues (Audio CD - 1997) - Original recording remastered

Here is what I enjoyed about each of these outstanding bonus offerings...

"Gypsy" (alternate version):
Sounds like a possible remix for the 1974 "This Is The Moody Blues" compilation had the song been chosen for that release! One difference in this version is that Justin's chanting (Before the "Left without a hope of coming home" parts) is louder in the mix, plus there are no backing vocals accompanying Justin's. I love the extended chaotic ending, and I get a kick out of the laughter and falsetto chanting at the tail end of the mix, probably from John Lodge. :) Justin's dramatic final vocal, edited in places and mixed more in the background on the final version, was well delivered, as well!

"Candle Of Life" (alternate version):
The vocals sound like they have less echo coming from them, on this mix. Also, the ascending piano chords, in the extended fadeout, were the highlight for me, and they sounded fantastic, too!

"Sun Is Still Shining" (extended version):
You can hear falsetto-like backing vocals behind Mike Pinder's singing, here, which is a pretty neat addition. Also, I didn't know there was a flute on this recording until the very end of the extended fadeout, and the piece is played very well by Ray Thomas! Fantastic! :)

The remaining tracks, from the David Symonds BBC radio show, sound almost identical to the performances from "Caught Live +5" (as noted in another review) except less songs appear on this disc, and both "The Voyage" and "Legend Of A Mind" are shorter versions, as performed here. Also, on this occasion, David Symonds introduces most of the tracks, before The Moody Blues start playing, and amusingly, he sounds like he is slightly chuckling when he introduces "Legend Of A Mind," for The Moodies! :) Mono sound quality on this performance, but it still sounds magnificent!

Just like the 1997 CD remaster of "To Our Children's Children's Children," this Deluxe Edition also featured a topnotch remastering job! I would recommend this release to any Moody Blues fan or collector. Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

4 out of 5 stars Moody Blues' SACDs Rock!.......2007-03-24

You may have read that the Super Audio CD format (SACD) sounds very much like listening to a good vinyl LP on a high-end audio system. My own experience with "To Our Children's Children's Children" mirrors that view. This particular CD is one of the Moody's seven "concept" albums and it finally gets the treatment it deserves in this high resolution format. The extra tracks are a bonus for Blues' fans, but the real attraction here is the album itself, and the sound is probably as close to the original session master tapes as we're going to get. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Should of done a New 5.1 mix with more studio outtakes.......2007-01-16

This is one of the best Moody Blues albums from their peak of 1967-1972. I don't mind a radical remix and this is not one. But, the old quad mix they used for this release from 1972 is not good. The electric guitar, mostly the lead, is buried in the mix. They should have remixed this album from the master tapes. Why use an old 4 channel mix, done for stereo systems featuring early 1970's technology. REMIX the album in 5.1. Don't cross-fade the songs.

The bonus disc was disappointing. The 3 studio tracks they put on, Gypsy (Alt Mix with no fadeout), Candle of Life (Alt Mix with clean intro and a longer ending), and Sun Is Still Shining (Alt longer Mix) are all great. But why only 3 songs! How about an unedited complete version of "I Never thought I'd Live to be A Hundred". The song was cut in half for the album and put on both sides. How about a mix of "Eyes Of a Child Pt. 2" that doesn't fade in or out. How about a mix of "Out and In" with a clean intro and longer ending. The live BBC show is ok, but it was recorded the same week as the live album "Caught Live Plus 5". So the versions and song choices are the same. They should have released it, but as a seperate release from this. They should have added more outtakes from the studio recordings to the bonus disc. There was still atleast 25 minutes of time left on the cd with the live segment included.

I'm glad they released this, but it could of been so much better.

1 out of 5 stars dissappointed.......2006-11-10

I was excited when I heard the initial seven albums would be released as 5:1 SACD's. I have a SACD player and decent sound system but there haven't been many releases that have interested me, so far. I have been a huge Moodies fan since the 70's and was really looking forward to what I thought would be the ultimate versions of these classic albums.

First of all, in spite of what the liner notes say, this is only a four channel recording- no center or sub-woofer (unless it's a manufacturing defect- I do have an amplifier with six discreet channels and Dark Side sounds fantastic). I could live with this if the mix had been well done. First of all, there's no bass. I pulled out my 24 bit remastered CD and there was at one time ample low end, but it's sadly missing here. The other major complaint is that this recording has been way over-compressed- there are no dynamics left. This is a very flat and uninteresting mix that's inferior to the CD and not in the same league as the LP, which I had expect it would be.

My original instinct was to buy all five of the albums so far released at once, but I'm glad I decided to check one out first- I only would have been five times as dissappointed.

Children of all ages will delight in the simple melodies featured in A Child's Collection of Folk Music. These story-songs are repetitive and eminently singable. Material ranges from traditional twangy banjo numbers like "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain" from Folk granddaddy Pete Seeger to the soulful song-in-the-round "Run Molly Run" by contemporary gospel group Sweet Honey in the Rock. Moms and dads will have the opportunity to share some of their favorite folk artists with the next generation: Michelle Shocked, who does a lovely traditional Irish-minstral-type ballad; Taj Mahal, who performs a bluesy "Little Brown Dog"; and Woody Guthrie on "Riding in My Car (Car Song)." And for all the Deadhead mommies, there's Jerry Garcia and David Grisman performing "There Ain't No Bugs on Me." Kids will particularly enjoy the Cajun boogie of Buckwheat Zydeco and the trip-over-the-tongue island music of Cedella Marley Booker. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, diverse, and not stupid........2007-02-18

I too am a "concerned mother who ACTUALLY read the lyrics" (sniff!) and I'm extremely concerned that people who are that offended by such a playful, mild phrase are raising children. Please. Lighten up, or indulge in Barney.

Beautiful, layered work on this cd: a pleasure to listen to, dance to, sing along with. From age 2 to 38 in this house, we're enthralled.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd--now about those lyrics..........2005-12-21

This is wonderful stuff, though I share some of the concerns below about the lyrics. Take "there may be lobsters on some of you mobsters"--that's just not logical. And it you said that to a mobster, he'd ice you, so you shouldn't teach your kids to say things like that. Otherwise, though, this is great.

5 out of 5 stars you'll love it too.......2003-10-30

My 3 y.o. loved it. The music is upbeat and fun, and you'll crack your kid up when you sing your own version of Ridin' in My Car. And Their Ain't No Bugs on Me is a great song. I don't know about your kid, but mine can handle a lyric like "How in the hell can the old folks tell ..." especially when sung so cheerfully and, um, innocuously. Mostly, it's a cd that you yourself will enjoy listening to ... even (believe it or not) the supplied version of Skip to My Lou.

4 out of 5 stars A Child's Celebration of Folk Music/Various Artists.......2003-06-02

Loved it except for the "Ain't no bugs on me" song. It uses the phrase "how in the (hell) can the old folks tell" In my opinion, that is not appropriate for young children.

2 out of 5 stars Concerned mother actually listened to lyrics.......2003-05-31

Most of the songs are enjoyable and of the caliber I expected after reading the reviews posted. However, on Garcia's version of "Ain't No Flies On Me", there is a mild obscenity, which is fine for an adult compilation, but unacceptable for a compilation directed to children. As the rules for this forum prohibit obscenities, I cannot be more explicit about the exact lyrics. I am extremely disappointed in the editors and will be returning my CD.

5 out of 5 stars Not for children.......2007-04-22

This was produced by Hal Willner at A&M in 1989 when Willner was 31. Willner has also produced albums for Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, Bill Frisell, William S. Burroughs, Gavin Friday, Lucinda Williams and Allen Ginsberg, among others. So it should be no surprise that this album is an eclectic mix and highly theatrical in concept. Several reviewers have criticized the use of medleys, but a great many Disney songs have only one verse and a chorus, which makes it difficult to make a full length cut, hence the medleys. It's an album that has aged very well and bears many repeat listenings. Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson,Suzanne Vega, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Betty Carter,Sinead O'Connor, James Taylor, Yma Sumac, and narration by Ken Nordine. It sounds as though it should be a real mess, but Willner has put it together so it not only makes sense but is more than the sum of its parts.

3 out of 5 stars Not hte best cd to buy.......2007-04-02

I have bought several Disney cd's like this one and this is my least favorite. Some of the arrangements I feel could scare a young child, like Hey Diddley Dee. The one that I do enjoy is the title song...It is very much the mother's lullaby being sung acapello.

5 out of 5 stars Disney a wee bit on acid........2006-06-09

What an eclectic grouping of artists that came together to make this work. The absolute best Disney tribute CD that adults will probably enjoy more than the children. Sinead deliberatly sings an entire song off key until the last note and it's perfect. There are wonderfull songs that you would expect, but with Tom Waits in the mix you must expect some "oddness". Overall a great CD. 5 Stars easy.

4 out of 5 stars Alternating dark , melancholy and wistful, good but for grown-ups only.......2006-05-16

I found that listening to this work end to end is going to put you in some peculiar moods. The overall feeling is definitely downbeat, even the up-tempo songs have a decidedly ironic and dark bent. My favorite song in this album has to be the exceptionally soulful rendering of "Baby Mine" by Bonnie Raitt; it turns the sentimental mother-child ballad into something more on the romantic side. I have often slow-danced this one with the wife, and you can really feel a hot intensity under the surface of this number. James Taylor's "Second Star To The Right" is exceptionally wistful in his trademark style. Sun Ra's cover of "Pink Elephants" remains true to the original while retaining the peculiar spacy Sun-Ra vibe. One of the more "accessible" Sun-Ra performances I've ever heard.

Tom Waits and Ken Nordine are commanding presences as well. The Tom Waits version of "Hi-Ho" made my wife's imagination conjure nightmare images of murderous doings in Gacy's basement; it creeps her out so badly, she refuses to hear one note of it. I prefer to imagine the dwarves in manic, Fred C. Dobbs-like pursuit of their underground treasure, working too fast in a mine full of hazards and fearsome environments... with a workplace like that, it's no wonder they'd really appreciate a Snow White coming into their lives. Perfect music if you are on your way to a job you hate...

I agree the Sinead O'Connor piece (Someday My Prince Will Come) and Suzanne Vega "Stay Awake" tracks are here mostly for their postmodern ironic effect, and I find them hard to listen to with patience. In Sinead's case, the shock value of her performance of this particular song choice gets dulled over time as people forget who she is and why her singing this is supposed to be funny.

The Nordine pieces, which bookend the album, really demand good headphones for best appreciation, and reward repeated listening. Cruising thru quotes of ee cummings, with puzzling snatches of what seems to be an audio montage of soundtrack clips from old Disney park attractions, and other spooky imagery, he conjures up a tour thru a darkened, haunted vault of musty film cans and ragged posters, the perfect place for an adult to look back on childhood perceptions and potentials and compare his youthful fantasies with the cold realities and incomplete goals and disappointments of old age. Pretty heavy stuff. Yet it manages to finish, if not upbeat, still, with a sense that we still have time left to wring meaning from our pasts, and to put ourselves on a path to personal redemption.

The whole album leaves me with this kind of feeling, as if I have passed unscathed thru something more dark and dangerous than I really understood, and survived to come out into sunlight on the other side. Like the old "dark ride" rollercoaster attractions of Disney's park, you will want to experience the ordeal of getting scared and surviving it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Really good stuff.......2006-04-28

I picked this up on CD when it was first released and I was in college, it was always one of my dirty pleasures packed next to harder, grungier, and/or funkier stuff. Well, most of the other stuff has not stood the test of time too well, but Stay Awake still comes out every once in a while. Like the earlier reviewer, I frequently sing my daughters to sleep with Blue Shadows on the Trail ala Syd Straw, and my 2 year old has taken to singing along with me. My one complaint is the medley style of the tracks... some tunes rate an individual track, while other tracks might have three or four tunes faded together. Plenty of different styles on here to satisfy a wide variety of tastes, but it's the purer and more sentimental ones that have always stuck with me. I strongly disagree with the reviewer who thinks Aaron Neville was trying to sex up the Mickey Mouse Club march, I've always felt that his version is laced more with plaintive nostalgia than anything prurient. I've always wished that somebody would put together a Stay Awake 2, but if that means Jessica Simpson gets called in to remake Hakuna Matata, I'll pass.

5 out of 5 stars Trout Fishing in America has wide appeal.......2007-04-12

After hearing Trout Fishing in America at a concert in my home town, I decided to buy a CD for my husband and me and one for my 7-year-old granddaughter. When we got together, we played (her) "Big Trouble" and (our) "My Best Day". I don't know who enjoyed it more--the children, the parents, or the grandparents. My granddaughter was soon singing along with "When I Was a Dinosaur" and other favorites on the CD which is not surprising when you consider how many times she listened to it during the weekend. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood are wonderful musicians, clever song-writers, and just all-around great entertainers. Here's to many more years of their audience-pleasing CD's and personal appearances.

4 out of 5 stars Big Trouble is great.......2006-08-09

My favorite is still Family Party, but that's probably because I've had it for years--I bought it even before my son was born. We enjoy Big Trouble, we just have to listen to it more often to really get to know the songs. We especially like the title song--that poor kid, in such big trouble because the monsters have wrecked his house!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Upbeat Music for the whole Family!.......2006-07-02

I used to work at a toy store and believe me we had to play some really bad music, but when this cd was on, the time just flew by. Now I listen to this music with my son. It is really upbeat and is something I would recommend when you need to pass the time like when you're in the car or cleaning up. The songs are creative, not the same old sing alongs you get on all the other kids' music cds.

5 out of 5 stars this is so funny!.......2006-03-10

I HAVE THREE CHILDREN WHEN I PUT THIS CD ON WE LAUGH AND IT'S EVEN FUN FOR ADULTS! I THREW HER OUT THE WINDOW! MY SON WHO WE GOT THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY LOVED HEARING THIS ON HIS SCHOOL BUS!HE TOLD ME THAT HE WANTED THIS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY.WELL THANK GOODNESS AMAZON HAD IT AND FOR CHEAP! I NEVER KNEW THAT ORDERING COULD BE SO FUN AND FAST!

5 out of 5 stars The Reason I rarely buy stupid popular character kids music.......2006-01-07

Popular fad kids music willl never be able to compare to the perfection that is Trout fishing in America. Fresh, funny, lively addictive music the whole family will want to listen to together.
I was introduced to Trout fisning in America long before I had kids. My husband had 2 CDs fromhis college days.
Every single son on this tape is memerable. YOu will find yourself singing, or trying to sing along in the case of Proper Cup of Coffee!
There are way too many laugh out loud lyrics, the music is contagious and makes you want to move.
Lastly Lullaby is actually a sweet beautiful piece.
NOt only are they fun songs but these 2 men have great voices!

Leadbelly wasn't exactly the Raffi of the Roosevelt era. Convicted of attempted murder and murder, the man born Huddie Leadbelly on January 20, 1888, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, began forging a career as a performer in the 1930s after his discovery by John and Alan Lomax. By then he'd developed an enormous repertoire as well deft vocal and instrumental skills. Despite his sordid past, Leadbelly won over adults and children alike; this generous 28-song collection demonstrates the source of his pied-piper appeal. While the master of the 12-string guitar drew upon traditional kid fare ("Skip to My Lou," "Blue-Tailed Fly"), he recognized that plenty of goodies from his adult bag of songs appealed to tykes, too. Consequently, blues, work songs, and prison numbers turn up in this gratifying collection, which consists of a 1960-released children's LP in its entirety, plus selections from two other records and a previously unreleased radio track. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

This new collection features delightful songs for young children as well as the work songs, blues, and spirituals Lead Belly used to teach children about the experiences and emotions of adult life. Originally reocrded in children's concerts and studios for asch and Folkways records in the 1940s, the 28 songs and spoken introductions reveal the humor, humanity, and musical genius of one of the great artists of the twentieth century. Essential listening for all ages. Produced by Moses Asch. Reissue compiled and annotated by Jeff Place.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues Master Of The Twelve String Guitar!!!.......2005-10-28

Not only was Huddie Ledbetter a geat Blues songwriter he was also the King Of The Twelve String Guitar which made him unique among his contemporaries. Anybody who has tried to play a 12 string guitar knws it takes a lot of strength and muscle . This album contains some fine and unforgettable tracks such as 'Good Morning Blues", "Irene Goodnight", "Rock Island Line" and "Midnight Special" which was inspired by his time in Prison. The story behind this song is that if a train's light shone on a Prisoner then he would soon be released. The greatness of this artist can be seen by the many cover versions of his songs which were released by many well known artists such as Johnny Cash and John Fogarty. It is interesting to note just where Huddie got the nickname "Leadbelly". I have heard it was given to him by a prostitute who admired his Sexual Prowess or another version where he was shot in the stomache but thankfully survived. Or perhaps it was just a misspelling of his surname. This guy was and is a Blues Legend.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album for all ages.......2003-02-16

In many ways, this album is an oddity. First, it is a blues album. The blues are supposed to be about sadness and hard times, yet this a remarkably upbeat album, Second, it is a children's album, except that it may be better appreciated by adults. I have not played this album to children, so I can't say what today's children will make of this album.

There are some traditional children's songs here, including Skip to my Lou, Grey goose and Blue-tailed fly (Jimmy crack corn), but there are other songs which you are more likely to find on standard albums, including Swing low sweet chariot, Rock Island line, Cotton fields, John Henry and Midnight special.

The songs here are sequenced such that all the genuine children's songs are at the front. After all of those come the blues and spirituals. Then come the work songs. Finally, you get some of Leadbelly's best-known songs. This last category confuses things slightly. After all, Cotton fields (included in the work songs) and Pick a bale of cotton (included in the famous songs) fit both categories. If anything, Cotton fields is the more famous of the two. Still, the order in which the songs appear is really not that important, although it was wise to put the real children's songs up front.

I have several children's albums, all carefully selected. This one definitely appeals to adults and serves as a great introduction to Leadbelly's music.

5 out of 5 stars An album to all of the family!!.......2001-09-08

I'm a bluesfan and have a daughter at age of 11,and since she was a baby the blues was ever a sound listened in my home. So,she likes the blues, and when i 've brought this Leadbelly album, she becomed so interested in that kind of music and it touched me inside.I've explained her all of the history of blues, specially in the person of Leadbelly, his own history too,the hard days at Angola prison, his lyrics asking for liberty, the poverty of that days, and specially the capacity of that suffered man to change all of his own life, when he decided to do what he really knows better, just to play and to sing. Then i could explain her that the man can changes the reality, just with some educative activities, and the music ,is one of that.
So, i really recomends this album for all of the families,as a good way to start new relations between all of this families members! We must believe in the capacity to change our lives with good intentions and with actions to reach all we want.
The cover art of this cd reveals the envolvement between an experienced bluesman, and that younger audience, linked by just the great music that echoes from Leadbelly guitar!
This is a historical set of musics for adults and childrens everywhere. To the family!

5 out of 5 stars pure gold--if your tastes run this way.......2001-08-30

I resolved to have them play Jimmy Crack Corn at my funeral--it might be the only way I can every get anyone to listen to this tune. It's sublime.
Leadbelly is ineffable. If you have only heard his blues, I don't think you've really heard the whole man. You must buy this record!
Singing and talking to kids brings out his incredible sweetness. No wonder he got those governers to spring him from prison!

5 out of 5 stars rockin' the cradle.......2001-01-20

The songs on this CD are delightful. Not being an educator nor a parent, I won't speculate on the efficacy of this CD for young people. I know that I like it, and it brings a smile to my face as I listen to Mr. Ledbetter. Even the song about a menacing bug, BOLLWEEVIL, is fun the way he plays it. The PIG LATIN SONG is so ridiculous and childlike, I just have to laugh. I enjoy the standards by Mr Ledbetter, also, GOOD MORNING BLUES, ROCK ISLAND LINE and COTTON FIELDS. Mr Jeff Place writes a comprehenseive set of notes which explains a great deal about this great man's life. "Through Alan Lomax, he met people like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Aunt Molly Jackson, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Josh White, and all of the musicians he encountered were influenced by Lead Belly's music." As an introduction to the song WHEN A MAN'S A LONG WAY FROM HOME, Mr Place writes, "Lead Belly clearly thought that children could be introduced to the feeling of the blues," The Columnist Walter Winchel wrote, "How could anyone make a children's record with a convicted murderer?" Smithsonian Folkways did, and I am glad of that. If you are interested in the songs of Mr Huddie LedBetter (1888-1949) or if you are interested in delightful Folk Tunes from the US, this CD will be interesting to you.

Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23

Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29

To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06

4 out of 5 stars Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07

This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.

5 out of 5 stars An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15

Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.
