Arthur's "5 Song Debut" is a nice show piece.Very good guitar work and vocals.

Product Description
The "5 Song Debut" CD by guitarist/singer/songwriter Arthur Mountaniol was released on J-Bird Records in 1998.This is Arthur's first solo effort after his former Russian psychedelic rock band "The Moon Pierrot" had broken up in 1992.

Musically it's Hard Rock with Swing and Hardcore twist. The guitar work as well as vocals are really excellent reminding you of Ritchie Blackmore,Freddy Mercury and Scorpions. The songs are well-crafted and entertaining.

This CD will appeal to fans of Deep Purple,Queen,Scorpions and Alice in Chains.

You must witness Alisa Weilerstein live. I fell in love with her playing at the Spoleto festival where she played the basso continuo part of a Bach Brandenberg Concerto as if it was the Dvorak Cello Concerto. She has a passion for music that i have not heard or seen. And in her early 20s. Oh my gosh what a performer she will eventually be!

2 out of 5 stars Weilerstein Debut.......2006-01-21

I've been playing the cello for almost 40 years and I agree about the complaints about the vibrato and phrasing: overdone! I also agree with the question about "aristocratic" playing: why all of the exaggeration? Instrument playing should ideally be like that of a vocalist, where one is not limited by one's technical abilities. I doubt that Ms. Weilerstein would sing these phrasese the same way she plays them. There is still time for her to develop, however. If you want to hear more refined playing, listen to Gendron, Rose, Fournier or Rostropovich.

I am a cellist of 15 years on the breakthrough of becoming a renowed cellist. This cellist tone is so powerfull and clear.she tells a story this is so clear to understand because the music speaks. alisa should watch the slurs from the f to b and be more gracefull. The apres un reve was ok i guess. she really should of tooken more time. like floating on a dream cloud. when i play this piece i take the music from the begining as a fuzzy dream and play the pitch so the music tells a story and becomes more clear every measure. The elgar is somenthing she might not want to touch because no one plays it better than du pre.

5 out of 5 stars Florida Music Lover.......2002-10-12

I have been fond of the cello for years. I have enjoyed Casals even though he was somewhate austere. I love Rostropovich's tone and color but have felt that no one has ever played with the passion of Du Pre until I heard Weilerstein on, I believe, NPR when they played an unreleased tape of the Elgar Concerto by Weilerstein. I missed the intro and would have bet the farm that I was listening to Du Pre until the announcement at the end. I immediately ordered this disc and it has me wondering about re-incarnation. Is Du Pre back? This disc is a wonderful sample of the immense talents of this new young artist. I can't wait for Alisa to record the my favorite Elgar for EMI.

SUCH PRESENCE! This is cello playing without apologies. She is always secure in what she is saying whether that is what you wanted to hear or not. She is the real thing. May she go onto continue to create controvery through her playing!

Luckily, the current profusion of mezzo-sopranos doesn't leave one jaded to talented newcomers such as Angelika Kirchschalger. Besides looking like a fashion model, this young Austrian singer has a voice of such lustrous perfection that she would be as boring as Olga Borodina sometimes is were there not such an interesting musical intelligence at work. The program is all rarities and far less daunting than it appears. The Mahler songs are early, folk influenced pieces; though they have their dark edges, they aren't nearly as neurotic as some of his later work. Songs by his wife, Alma Maria Schindler-Mahler, reflect a highly adventurous musical spirit who had yet to find her individual voice. The Op. 38 Korngold songs remind us of the complex harmonic language toward which both composers were headed. Kirchschlager is close to ideal, and her German is flawless. More surprising, so is her English in the premiere recording of Korngold's disarmingly straightforward Songs of the Clown inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Kirchschlager sings alternately with soaring rapture and hearty good humor. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Angelika the Angel.......2007-01-28

I am not a musicologist, but this CD by Miss Kirscschlager makes me want to listen to it over and over, especially the Korngold songs as I am a big Erich Wolfgang Korngold fan.

4 out of 5 stars Kirchschlager album is terrific.......2004-02-06

Angelika Kirchschlager recently gave a wonderful recital at Tully Hall in NY - all Schubert and Wolf. It was one of the best events of the year. Her musicianship, wonderful sound of her voice, and personality made this a truly memorable recital, and this disc is highly recommended, especially if you do not know this singer.

5 out of 5 stars Lustrous singing.......2001-01-15

This is a wonderful CD in every way. The programming is unified yet uniquely interesting, with both the tried-and-true (Gustav Mahler songs) and the completely new (some Korngold and Alma Mahler songs). The recorded sound is excellent, with a perfect balance between soloist and piano accompaniment. Most of all, Kirchschlager's singing is simply outstanding -- she has a gleaming mezzo-soprano voice, and she is particularly good and idiomatic in the German-language songs, capturing the feeling of fin-de-siecle Vienna as few singers could.

Although I also like Kirchschlager's lullabies CD ("When Night Falls"), this is the recording I keep coming back to for repeated listening. I think I've played it over 50 times now!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

This record introduces a young singer in a varied selection of French and German songs; surprisingly, of two by Liszt one is in French and one is in Italian. Michelle DeYoung is billed as a soprano, but sounds more like a mezzo-soprano: her voice is beautiful, dark, and warm, with a pure, resonant low range, and she has sung alto roles such as Wagner's Fricka. The program is not entirely felicitous: there are too many slow, lamenting songs, and, worse, not all present the singer to optimal advantage. She comes into her own in the Liszt and Strauss songs, for which she clearly has the greatest vocal and emotional affinity. Her expressiveness, which had been a bit overdone and calculated on the other songs, becomes spontaneous, deeply felt, and strongly projected. DeYoung's voice soars radiantly in the upper register; even her only vocal flaw, a wide vibrato, almost disappears, the tone becoming focused and intense. Kevin Murphy, a splendid pianist, supports her with empathetic sensitivity, although the recorded sound is too subdued and remote. The disc sorely lacks texts and translations, especially since many of the songs are comparatively unfamiliar; the booklet's invitation to find these on EMI's Web site is not much help to the listener. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars Promising recital debut.......2003-07-17

Yes, De Young does have some wide vibrato which doesn't serve her brilliantly on the Du Parc songs, which I think require a creamier, more delicate voice. However, I think she does a very
good job on the other songs. I think the relatively rare piano
duet versions of Wagner's "Wesondonck Lieder" are quite effective, though I agree the Liszt and Strauss lieder are the most outstanding things here. Murphy does an excellent job
throughout. Promising debut--though her orchestral work still
more intriguing at this pointI think. Yes, a singer in the Ludwig/Janet Baker mold.

          Album Description

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Madly Enthusiastic!!.......2004-10-13

Arthur Mountaniol's "5 Song Debut" album is full of passion with a madly driven vibe.Hard Rock in its post decaying beauty spiced up with jazzy influences and atonal lead guitar "cockroaching" runs especially in the songs:"Olympus" and "Criminal One".Arthur Mountaniol delivers outstanding vocals, guitar playing and exciting songwriting with lyrics of a cutting edge, bizarre originality.
I recommend this CD to anyone who loves Hard Rock the way it was meant to be,yet with a bit of unique refreshment.

          5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-10-04

I loved this CD.This is a delicious extraction of 70's,80's and 90's type of rock.Arthur's vocals and guitar playing will give you big goosebumps.

          4 out of 5 stars Hot Debut!.......2004-09-16

Arthur Mountaniol is a world class rock guitarist and singer who has a level and capacity like those of Ritchie Blackmore and Freddy Mercury. He's a great songwriter too.His "5 Song Debut" is quite a beginning,a really hot thing to start with.Musically it's an unusual blend of hard rock with a jazzy twist. If you're into Classic Rock, you will love this CD.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the best, but definitely worth listening to.......2004-11-15

A melange of performers and a wide gamut of musical offerings make this compendium of Purcell's music definitely worth the listen.

          1. Dido & Aeneas--Not the best performance, but some parts really shine. The witches' chorus (I'm biased because it's my favourite part of the opera) is really good. Surprisingly understandable English throughout, despite it being a french production. And some of the smaller parts, really do excellent jobs.

          2. So-so. I'm a big fan of choral music, and these performanes are unfortunately mediocre at best. The performances are rather uninspired and dote too heavily on technique when they aren't too technically difficult. The result is a somewhat pedantic approach to church music that could be moving or inspiring, but instead is just boring.

          3. Not bad. Here, the London Baroque do an excellent job of playing poorly-arranged music. When several pieces are in related keys, the ear loses track of something having changed, and it all sounds similar. Nearly half of the tracks have the tonal center on G, just under a third have their tonal center on D. That leaves just under one-fourth of the tracks with different tonal centers. Taken individually, they're beautiful, great articulation, good phrasing, fun to listen to. But as a compilation, one tires quickly.

          4. King Arthur--again, like Dido, really listenable. I'd actually say it's a better performance, there's more interest in the music on the part of the performers, without the shadow of being overly-famous like Dido. From a compositional note, Purcell's text painting is truly amazing.

          5. Music for a While-unfortunately. Mr. Deller's sense of pitch is unfortunately questionable throughout this disc. His sense of phrasing is odd, and his choice in instrumention is unfortunate. I imagine that he simply didn't spend as much time with the music, because the last track, O Solitude, is absolutely magical. Difficult in the extreme, but really one to listen to repeatedly.

6.John Butt- Locke, Purcell and Blow. (sorry, I'm still young) Truly wonderful performances, definitely the highlight of the set. I'll say that Purcell's music is definitely better than Locke's, but I think that Locke's could stand performances on smaller, portative organs, more common throughout England.
