A total masterpiece.......2007-05-12
A piano lover shall love this neo-classical masterpiece by one of the best minimalist composer. To weather question our heart and mind or simply to relax this cd is probably one of the best means.
My First Minimalist Piano.......2007-04-05
I have never been a huge fan of solo music in general or piano music in particular; I respect talented musicians, but for the most part, piano music deoesn't really appeal to me. This CD, however, is completely different. I first heard one of the songs on an episode of Battlestar Galactica and fell instantly in love. Even though the music is 'minimalist' meaning that it is very repetetive and the musical lines are relatively simple (this isn't Bach or Beethoven or Mozart with several parts creating an impressively 'large-sounding' whole), every note is so precisely placed that it fits perfectly. In my opinion, the music is just as much about what isn't played as what is - all the notes that Glass plays hints at other notes that are not played.
Basically, I would have to say that minimalist piano is not for everyone - particularly people who don't like a lot of repetition. At the same time, I think that people who do not typically enjoy solo piano music should give it a chance, since minimimalist piano is not the same as the piano music we tend to hear. One of the things that I like about it is, like classical music, if you have it on in the background it is unobtrusive, but still present. I have found this music to be beautiful and relaxing and I hope that other people enjoy it as much as I have.
An excellent minimalist piece.......2007-01-09
An excellent representation of minimalism. At times the songs get a bit repetitive, though I realize thats the point of the genre, and metamorphosis 5 seems to be a rerecording of metamorphosis 1. Its a great song, but there really was no deviation or alteration of the song to warrant putting on the album twice other than making a full circle. Those two reasons are why I gave it four stars. The album is really top notch. Its amazing the emotion this guy can pull out of the piano. He really is a genius with his music.
Brilliant!.......2006-11-04
For those who love the sound of a piano. This album is as good as "In my time" from Yanni, although not all the songs are for relaxation. I recommend it very much!
came for Starbuck - stayed for the excellent music.......2006-07-29
Amazing music, terrific piano. Really really cool.
I found this album (and this composer) from an online forum.
It was played on the episode Valley of Darkness, in the new Battlestar Galactica (Season 2- Episode 2)
"Metamorphisis five" is what was playing in Starbuck's apartment - supposedly a recording of her father.

She may have played a teenaged girl mistaken for a pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but after releasing a Christmas album in 2002, and crooning two songs on the movie's soundtrack, Hilary Duff looks like she means business. The only trouble is, she doesn't sound like it. Although dubbing her first album Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. But to her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers, who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's hit disc and they give the lissome actress's singing some attitude and grit, like on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday," and the cleverly conceived "Math," complete with heavy metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age sixteen, she's much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki

Duff debut.......2007-06-20
This is a fun lite pop album from Hilary Duff. Not a serious work of art, just easy listening, and what's wrong with that. Nothing. She's not the strongest singer, but she is entertaining. Here are some of the more enjoyable tunes:
So Yesterday
Come Clean
Workin it Out
Come Clean
The Math
Party Up
Metamorphisis
Why Not
Hilary Duff was good for a while.......2007-01-05
I think Hilary is kind of out now but at the time the kids liked this.
I love this CD!.......2006-12-14
Hilary Duff has a very pretty voice. I love the all the songs, but I don't really like the lyrics to Inner Strength. Over all this CD is great and fun to listen to.
An Amazing "Metamorphosis" For Child Star Hilary Duff.......2006-12-01
Hilary Duff's debut, Metamorphosis, is what teen pop should sound like in 2003. It picks up on mainstream trends, particularly those spearheaded by Avril Lavigne, but turns them light and sweet, making for a very good modern bubblegum album. One of the keys to its success is that Duff is never sexed up, the way that Britney Spears was right from the start of her career. This is also true of Hilary in her acting career, since her TV alter ego, Lizzie McGuire, is a regular teenager with teenage concerns, including (but not limited to) crushes on unattainable boys, getting along with her pest of a little brother, understanding her parents, worrying about money, and negotiating the cliques at her school. Metamorphosis is the musical equivalent of Lizzie McGuire, only splashier and savvier and not as silly or Disneyfied as the show. In other words, it's the sound of a preteen turning teenager, finding inspiration in the tough-girl pose of Avril but also being in the fortunate position of being able to work with the Matrix as well. The three songs helmed by the Matrix -- "So Yesterday," "Where Did I Go Right?," and "The Math" -- bear their trademark beats, acoustic guitars, and ridiculous spoken interjections, and they all sound a bit more natural coming from a teenager than they do coming from, say, Liz Phair, but Avril's influence can be heard throughout the record, particularly in how Duff has absorbed how Lavigne appeals to average girls while singing insidiously catchy songs. Hilary does that here, too, but she has a sweeter, more appealing voice than Avril, and the rest of the record follows her cheerful charisma, resulting in a charmingly effervescent listen. While some songs shine brighter than others, there is no dullness here, and the whole thing clocks in at a breezy 43 minutes, which helps keep things light and engaging. Metamorphosis isn't a record that will change the world, but like the best teen pop, it sounds right in its moment, which means it's about as good as this kind of music gets.
Also be sure to check out her sophmore album, "Hilary Duff" and her upcoming album, due sometime in April 2007. The first single from the new album, "Play With Fire" has already hit major radio stations.
It's Ok.......2006-11-14
I didn't really find anything too wonderful in this album. Hilary Duff just doesn't have the best voice to me. It usually sounds nazel and horse.
So Yesterday- 8/10- Could have been better
Come Clean- 10/10- This is probably one of the only songs she sounds good in.
Workin' it out- 6/10- Just not that interesting
Little Voice- 10/10- I really love this song!
Where Did I Go Right?- 4/10- Bad. Melody is stupid and the lyrics don't make any sense.
Anywhere But Here- 6/10- Like Workin' it Out, this song just was kinda boring.
The Math- 8/10- Could have been a 10/10- but you can't even hear her in the chorus at all!
Love Just Is- 5/10- Not a huge fan of this sappy stuff
Sweet 16- 7/10- It's OK
Party Up- 10/10- Good rockin' beat to it!
metamorphosis- 7/10- I didn't really like the verses. but everything else was OK
Inner Strength- 0/10- Horribly stupid. It was only like, one minute and she didn't even sing in it! I never listen to this anymore
Why Not?- 9/10- Her single, it's good
This CD deserves a three stars. If you want better pop music, the just get Hilary Duff self-titled or check out ZOEgirl, Barlowgirl, Jump5, Vanessa Hudgens, or Hannah MOntanah.

Souping up the classics with whatever contemporary music pulse is current at the moment has a long history. Some artists, like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, aspired to classical grandiosity. Others, like Michael Murphy and his discofied "A Fifth of Beethoven," turn classical melodies into pop hooks. Paul Schwartz falls somewhere in the middle with his Aria project, of which this is the third. Electronica grooves and effects angle their way through songs "based" on operatic works by Handel, Verdi, Puccini, and Monteverdi. Schwartz begins with a bar set high by some of these melodies, beautifully sung by soprano Rebecca Luker. Whether singing solo or in multi-tracked choirs, her voice opens heavens' gates, but she has to slog through some pedestrian arrangements to get there. Schwartz understands the difference between an orchestra and a synthesizer and with only a few exceptions--like the cheesy opening to "Ombra Ma Fu"--deploys each in appropriate measures. "Ascension," based on a Monteverdi aria is particularly striking with its underlying electronic ostinatos cycling through the breathtaking refrain. But too often, Schwartz's strings are saccharine and his rhythms clichéd in a music that uses high art only to reach for the facile. Like most classical-pop crossovers, time usually renders a verdict of kitsch in the first degree. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Another gem from Schwartz.......2007-02-21
Much like Aria 1 & 2 this is another gem, presenting a unique interpretation of classic arias. It is an awesome compilation. I look forward to Aria 4 (is there one in the works?)!!
so happy to have found this.......2006-12-31
This CD is one of Paul Schwartz's best; it's definitely the best out of all 3 Arias. I really hopes he continues making State of Grace and Aria CDs because they are amazing.
Massage Music that my clients LOVE.......2006-08-05
I now have all 3 CDs in the "Aria" famiy, and this one, like its predecessors is truely GREAT massage music! My clients love the entire Aria family of CDs. I've been a big fan of Rebecca Luker for quite sometime now and she SHINES like the truely elegant vocal star that she is on this album. A buy that is DEFINATELY well worth it!
Soul Satisfying.......2006-04-29
I love this CD. It's especially wonderful when it's rainy outside and I'm curled up by the fire inside. My son who is 16, blind and autistic loves it and plays it over and over. I think he taps into the immediate relaxation and beautiful blend of classical with technology.
I'm with all the others. Who cares if this somehow "interprets" the classic correctly or not? It is pleasing to the ears and that's all that matters.
Minneapolis, MN
Powerful interpretations of classics for modern ears........2006-03-18
As in Aria 1 and Aria 2, the incredible lyric soprano voice of Rebecca Luker delivers excellent music, song after song. She gives us an interpretation of Handel's Serse; a selection from Puccini's La Rondine; another selection from Verdi's La Traviata; an aria from Handel's Rinaldo; another nice selection from Puccini's Madame Butterfly; and a final selection from Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione.
The CD also has 6 instrumental works, arranged by Paul Schwartz. There is a very nice interpretation of Handel's tragic Sarabande, with vocals by the Joyful Company of Singers and words from Psalm 7. This piece reminds me of the tragic majesty of Carmina Burana.
Paul Schwartz consistently delivers powerful reinterpretations of classical music for modern ears.

Customer Reviews:
Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Tribal metamorphosis/Pentaphobe.......2007-03-19
Fantastic.I came across this being a Rachel Brice fan.I am now a total Pentaphobe fan as well. It's totally different to any thing one gets accustomed to hearing relating to bellydance. Its addictive and it's fresh and hypnotic.Fantastic buy.
Wow.......2007-02-18
This is really great for Tribal. I've only seen the performance pieces for two of the songs, but the rest are also much fun to play with. I listened to it over and over when I first got it and go back to it when I want a really great mood setter for a performance. I want more!
Pentaphobe.......2007-01-17
This CD was just what I was looking for!
It has a mysterious tone and steered away from the more traditional glittzy Belly Dance music.
not so good..........2006-11-17
I was very disappointed with this c.d. The only good songs on it are the ones that Rachael dances to on the Bellydance Superstars DVD. It's alot of industrial noise with no melody. If you're looking for music to do interperative dance to, check it out. If you're looking for something upbeat and inspiring, you might want to pass.
An Amazing Music CD.......2006-11-10
I really like this music CD. All the music is so amazing.
If you love Tribal Belly Dancing, you will love this CD.

Most underated CD ever.......2007-07-17
This cd is of course Iron Butterfly's best music ever. After their initial one hit wonder song, they never really went anywhere else, & yes I have most of their old albums. This music came after Mike Pinera came onboard & help produced a real "classis rock" album. This is not just a cd for hard core Butterfly fans, but a real piece of rock history. Mike Pinera went on to produce other classic albums, "Son of Cactus" with the New Cactus Band, 2 albums with his own Thee Image,(so far available on vinyl only). Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.
An underrated gem, an unappreciated classic..........2006-10-24
With Metamorphosis, Iron Butterfly chose to redefine their sound, presumably to launch themselves out of the sixties and into the seventies. With Doug Ingle at the wheel, the lineup changed to accommodate the new direction and which included Mike Pinera whose straight ahead rock sensibilities are felt throughout the album. Whether it qualified as a genuine Butterfly album is debatable, but, contrary to implacable critics, Metamorphosis was still a solid effort that pointed the way to a successful future if the rest of the original band had chosen to follow Ingle's prescience. Songs like Best Years of Our Life, Stone Believer, and Easy Rider are prime cuts of early 70s rock that still sound fresh today. The only disputable flaw in this otherwise excellent album is Butterfly Bleu. It's an aspiring piece that works on its own terms and the best parts of it are stunningly brilliant, but it seems out of place compared to the rest of the album and ultimately weighs it down. Sadly, this was Iron Butterfly's last worthwhile effort. Resurrected a few years later by Erik Braunn, their final two albums, 'Scorching Beauty' and 'Sun and Steel', tried vainly to recapture what the band had firmly in its hands on Metamorphosis.
EVERY FAN OF 70's ROCK MUSIC MUST GET THIS CD.......2006-09-08
Most of the other reviews have given you the specific details of the album. For people who only know the Butterfly from their famous hit InAGadaDavita, you will be pleasantly surprised!!!! This album came out a couple of years later. The production by Richard Podolor is thick and modern sounding. With GREAT songs, great lead vocals, amazing rhythm section and layered 2-guitar attack. The songs are progressive, funky and psychedelic. THIS ALBUM SHOULD HAVE SOLD MILLIONS. IT IS A LOST CLASSIC. Trust me on this one.
One of the best rock albums ever.......2005-12-15
This was the first (and only) album from the band featuring Mike Pinera and Larry Rhineheart and it is a real gem. Their dueling guitar work is solid and Pinera contributes some excellent vocals to compliment Doug Ingle and his soulful keyboard and vocal work. The music is varied and well rounded with excellent contributions from Lee Dorman (bass) and Ron Bushy (drums) as well. At first listen songs like Stone Believer and Best years of our lives jump out with their top 40ish sound and with continued listenings the rest of the album blends in beautifully. I've always found that truly great music is the type that grows on you, sounding better and better with each listen, until you find yourself enjoying every song. There is not a weak effort on the entire record and I ground the grooves down with repeated listens. I can honestly say I've listened to Metamorphosis hundreds of times and it still sounds fresh today. Sadly the band disbanded after this release with Rhineheart and Dorman going on to form Captain Beyond with Rod Evans (Deep Purple) and Bobby Caldwell. Their first album with this spin off group was an absolute smash and I recommend it just as highly as Metamorphosis. BUY THEM BOTH AND DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR.
Can YOU dig it?.......2005-09-13
Iron Butterfly...definately different. There are not too many if any albums with this sound. I used to have this on wax and wanted it on CD now. Great for rap producers if you are creative with samples. True music fans will enjoy.

METAMORPHOSIS SHOWS THE STONES GENIUS IN TRANSFORMING MANY OF THEIR LEGENDARY SONGS!.......2006-12-21
I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece CD album entitled "METAMORPHOSIS" by THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD, THE ROLLING STONES! This album was originally released on vinyl/LP and cassette in 1975 on the ABKCO Records label. I purchased the newest and latest CD re-release also on the ABKCO Records label using the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process. The matrix or ID number is 90062. If I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.
In my opinion, "METAMORPHOSIS" is nothing less than an outstanding album! Many of the song tracks listed here were recorded live while the others are comprised of many studio outtakes.
I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their exact order as follows: (1.) "Out Of Time," (Outstanding! Excellent! I love this brilliant outtake version! This version uses an orchestra arrangement resulting in a great song! I love it!) (2.) "Don't Lie To Me," (Outstanding! Excellent! Magnificent! This is another great legendary Stones Rocker! I love this song!) (3.) "Somethings Just Stick In Your Mind," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great Stones beautifully arranged and well performed number. I love this song!) (4.) "Each And Everyday Of The Year," (Excellent! Another Stones slow number! I love it!) (5.) "Heart Of Stone," (Outstanding! Excellent! Magnificent! Another great Stones outtake that contains different arrangements. I love this legendary outtake number.) (6.) "I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys," (Outstanding! Excellent! Magnificent! Another great slow Stones Rocker! This song sounds like The Beach Boys singing the song "Leader Of The Pack! I love this song dearly!) (7.) "(Walkin' Thru The) Sleepy City," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great Stones rocker! I love the music arrangements in this song!) (8.) "We're Wastin' Time," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great slow Stones Rocker! This song is well arranged and recorded! I love this song dearly!) (9.) "Try A Little Harder," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great legendary Stones ROCKER! I love this song dearly!) (10.) "I Don't Know Why," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great slow rocker! I love this song!) (11.) "If You Let Me," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great Stones Rocker! I love the acoustic arrangements!) (12.) "Jiving Sister Fanny," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great legendary Stones Rocker! I love this song dearly!) (13.) "Downtown Suzie," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great Stones Blues Rocker! I love the acoustic arrangements!) (14.) "Family," (Outstanding! Excellent! Another great Stones slow acoustics number. I love this song!) (15.) "Memo From Turner" (Outstanding! Excellent! Magnificent! Another great legendary Stones Rocker! I love this song!) and (16.) "I'm Going Down." (Outstanding! Excellent! Magnificent! Another great legendary Stones Rocker! Another Rocker I love dearly!) In my opinion, all of the song tracks are outstanding!
As you can see, this album is definitely worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as part of his or her music collection. This album will definitely be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, The Stones possess many needed qualities that are vital for a great rock band to succeed. One of these qualities is perserverence! This quality is one of the many reasons why The Stones are STILL THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD! I get the feeling that The Stones are going to be around a little while longer than anticipated, am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. God Bless and Long Live The Rolling Stones! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Rock forever, J.L.
Studio Musicians.......2006-12-04
I thought that it was, widely, known that Oldham took the tracks that were , mostly, unfinished tracks and brought it to Trod Nossel studios in Wallingford,Ct. and had studio musicians add the final touches [on some tracks a lot more than just 'finishing touches' were added]. Andrew Loog Oldham just wanted to cash in on the "gravy train" that was "The Rolling Stones", who had become a machine, only the likes of Col.Tom Parker, could fully appreciate. Not that I feel bad for the Stones. Anybody who has followed them for all these years knows [or to be honest, we can only surmise] that Michael Jagger was not concerned about the quality of this material but that he would not get moneys gathered from sale of said album. Let's face it, Jagger is one of the cheapest bastards on this planet. So when The Stones, actually Jagger, pleaded for fans NOT to buy this album because it wasn't up to Rolling Stones standard,it rings as major league insincerity. Jagger cares about Jagger and $$$$ first and foremost, not the fans. Don't you ever believe different.
I'm not a 'half-empty' guy by any means, I'm usually quite positive about most things in this world, but sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade. Long live Brian Jones!
If You're New to the Stones, Read This........2006-03-23
You don't want to buy this album if you're not familiar with the Stones. This is a collection of pre-Sticky Fingers outtakes that didn't make the cut on the original early London albums. Don't get me wrong - this is a great bunch of songs, but they are probably only appreciated by people already very familiar with the early Stones. Buy Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, and maybe Aftermath before venturing here.
I've come to realize one thing: What i like no one else does........2006-02-28
3 stars? 4 stars? i was a little shocked at all the negative response for this album. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that not only is this the Stones best album, that's right, but without out a doubt their most inventive, most chance taking, and most lyrically mature. I've heard sticky fingers, there are 5 good songs, and that goes for all Stones albums. They all have amazing songs, but all of them drag and drag with songs that make me think, the Stones are actually in competition with the Beatles? Heck no. The album Metamorphosis offers newness with every track, it involves huge risks, and is a vast difference from any other Stones album. It simply doesn't sound like the monotonous albums they made afterward. It truly is uderrated, and should be in every true music fans collection. Maybe i'm just crazy, i don't know. If there is any reason at all why the Stones are great it is because of an album like this.
Try a little harder.......2005-12-22
Not really a classic album, only recommended to Rolling Stones completists. Although this album is supposed to gather several rare songs (mostly b-sides) recorded at different times during their career, there is no information at all in the booklet of the CD about these songs. It's really a shame.
Look on the internet for any information on the songs or you can take a look at Richard L. Carlton's review on Amazon.com (and other reviews as well).

Old man Hindemith.......2002-03-06
Hindemith is one of the few composers who's music depends 100% on the conductor AND orchestra involved. Each different recording of 'Mathis der Maler' I have heard is startleingly different than the other, and each has its own strong and weak points.
The present recording by Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony is surprisingly good. The orchetra, just starting its new tenure with Yoel Levi as mucis director, can already be heard as much improved over past recordings. The brass, most notably the French Horns and Tuba, deserve special recognition.
While the orchestra is indeed step up, the interpretation leaves something to desire. While Levi does an exceptioanlly creative and well-executed "March" and "The trial of St. Anthony", the rest seems to plod along at an almost unbearable pace. The 'Engelkonzert' is surprisingly dull, as if the Angels in question were old, withered, and perhaps too holy to be bothered to sing with joy. In this recording, Levi makes Hindemith seem to be a resigned and slow old man, rather than the person who was full of zest and vigor.
Hindemith for all ages.......2000-08-06
I am only 16 years old and I was recently involved in an honors orchestra in which we played symphonic Metamorphosis and we all loved it. The opening is the grandest with the majestic french horns and continues on with powerful strings. But not to worry here comes the mighty brass about 30 measures into it.The thing that made me love this song was the great diversity. Every section got a chance to show their stuff. From the second fast-paced movement to the third slow beautiful flowing wind solos in the third movement to the trombone fugue in the Marsch this peice is sure to thrill every fan of any orchestral instrument or group.

On the Subject of Hindemith..........2005-07-10
When Eugene Ormandy was at the helm of the Philadelphia Orchestra he was a master of the big sounds that so occupy the works of Paul Hindemith and Bela Bartok. This CD is a fine sounding reproduction of 1979 recordings made by this ensemble and director. The rarely heard 'Concert Music for Stings and Brass' is a welcome addition to the Hindemith recorded repertoire: it is exciting and edgy and Ormandy flings into the air with aplomb.
Ormandy's conducting proclivity for favoring the big string sound keeps this 'Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Weber' somewhat grounded. The playing is superb if a bit thick in sound. But the performance of Bartok's 'Miraculous Mandarin Suite' was one of the best of its time.
This is a solid recording, perhaps not up to the sonic standards of today, but at the budget price it deserves to gain a place in the libraires of all music lovers of 2oth Century music. Grady Harp, July 05
Excellent!.......2005-06-17
I love Hindemith. I like playing many of his solo works, but his orchestral works are true masterpieces. This is greatly shown on this Ormandy recording. The brass is so full and harmonous and the woodwinds have many tonal and dynamic shadings. The first movement has to be my favorite, it has so much energy and flair.
The Miraculous Mandarin Suite is also very well done, the clarinet solo is fantastic.
Brilliant Budget Buy.......2005-05-02
Don't you just love it when classic recordings get reissued on CD at a budget price?! Such is the case with this title in EMI's "Encore" series featuring Hindemith and Bartok orchestral works by conductor Eugene Ormandy leading the Philadelphia Orchestra in analog stereo performances from 1978. After many productive years at Columbia, and a shorter but no less brilliant tenure at RCA, Ormandy took the Philadelphians briefly to EMI before ending his career at Sony. I bought this CD primarily because I have never had the opportunity to hear Ormandy perform either of the two Hindemith pieces featured here -- Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber and Concert Music for Strings and Brass. I do however own his earlier account of Bartok's Miraculous Mandarin Suite reissued on Sony Essential Classics and I have to say I prefer the first incarnation. However, with classical budget lines beginning to inexplicably disappear (including the aforementioned Sony "Essential Classics" series -- what's up with that?!), I'm delighted that EMI continues to make great recordings available at such an inexpensive price through series such as "Gemini" and "Encore."

Product Description
In the late 80s and early 90s, R.E.X. Music was just about the coolest label on the planet for Christian hard music. Three of the big names on the roster at that time (in addition to Believer) were Living Sacrifice, Circle of Dust and Brainchild. In 1993, this trio of talent was molded together by the masterful hands of Klay Scott (then Scott Albert) on what became known as Metamorphosis. Remixing industrial was still relatively new at the time; remixing death metal was all but unheard of. And although part of the enduring value of this CD is due to its pioneering spirit, the music stands up in its own right. Over a decade later, the work of Metamorphosis is still held in the highest regard in the scene. This album was originally released on REX Records in 1993 as Brainchild, Living Sacrifice, Circle of Dust: Metamorphosis Remixes.
Customer Reviews:
Circle of Dust and Living Sacrifice and Brainchild, oh my!.......2005-06-13
Ok, I had to have this so badly I went and bought the re-issue. Klay Scott/Scott Albert (the guy behind CoD, Brainchild, and all the remixes) reportedly was VERY against it being rereleased in the manner it was, if EVER. But I have to say I am SO relieved I did. First a tracklist:
01. Brainchild - Deviate [Sawed Off Shotgun Edit]
02. Brainchild - Descend [Pit of Hell Mix]
03. Brainchild - Heldweller
04. Brainchild - Nihilistic Void
05. Living Sacrifice - Void Expression [Blank Stare Mix]
06. Living Sacrifice - Black Veil
07. Living Sacrifice - Distorted [Alternate Reality Mix]
08. Living Sacrifice - Desolate
09. Living Sacrifice - Sacrificed
10. Circle of Dust - Dissolved [Disintigration Dub]
11. Circle of Dust - Consequence [Temporary Mix]
12. Circle of Dust - Consequence [Eternal Mix]
13. Circle of Dust - Self Inflict (NOT the '95 album version)
14. Circle of Dust - Daraq
Wow. Awesome stuff. Anything from Klay Scott is worth buying, period. Aside from that, it's so awesome to see such different takes on favorite songs--like Self Inflict. I think this is the first time it saw the light of day and it and the 95 version are very similar but this one is a bit more chaotic I think and I find I prefer one over the other at times.
Consequence is an amazing song and I just love the two mixes side by side. I think I like Eternal better, the riffs sound AMAZING amped up over the industrial terror that is the rest of the song. Temporary is a more stripped-down, creepier feeling mix at first, then just gets thumping and dancy and groovy.
Dissolved (Disintigration) is like a combination of strategically placed samples (the "Let's Dance!" at the beginning is one of my faves ever) and every nightmare Cher has ever had. Let's leave it at that.
For the Living Sacrifice, Black Veil and Distorted (Alternate Reality) are the standouts. Veil is creepy with the monks chanting and all the crazy samples over the acoustic guitar and stuff... cooool. And Distorted is neat, with Klay's distinctive style over fewer synths and therefore more guitar riffage. He uses a really... catchy sample here to really flesh out the instrumental track.
Of the Brainchild... Hell, I like it all. Deviate and Descend are chugging and dancy and samply and everything you would expect from the heavier thrashier side of CoD that was the Brainchild project. Heldweller and Nihilistic Void, like Daraq and Black Veil (and at that point Self Inflict) had never been released before at all, and to date I don't think ANY of the mixes on this CD can be found anywhere else except maybe the Jack of All Trades boot.
I only wrote this much because I think this music definitely deserves a fair (glowing?) description. If you like metal or industrial at all, you should buy this CD if you can find it. And if you like that, proceed to buy the entire CoD catalog, Argyle Park's Misguided, AP2's Suspension of Disbelief, Chatterbox's Despite, anything Celldweller, Klank's Still Suffering and Downside Remixes (and, OK, Numb too)... ooh, and anything by Klay's brother Level. Verrrry good stuff there. I'm done. *takes deep breath*
