HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations,fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded.The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping,your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours!You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

One of the greatest tenors ever.......2005-03-15

When Fritz Wunderlich died (tragically, in an accident) at the
age of 36, some of Opera's greatest experts and critics were
devastated and called his death a "heavy blow to music."

How true. Wunderlich never had the chance to get international
exposure at the level modern tenors do. He lived in the "wrong era", before media hype, and he died youg - much too young.

Yet even today, Wunderlich experiences a remarkable renaissance.
The world has (re-)discovered this gorgeous voice. Monaco and
Corelli had more power (though not much more), Bjoerling's and
Pavarotti's and Joseph Schmidt's timbres were more ringing (though not much more), Di Stefano and Carreras sang more sweetly (though not much more), and Bergonzi's and Tucker's belcanti were fabulous.

But hardly any of those had all thoe qualities combined like Fritz Wunderlich. Listen to his breathtaking musicality when he sang Mozart, his effortless height, his clear diction (probably unparalleled by any opera singer ever), his phrasing, his passion when he sang Verdi or Puccini.

And his height ... has there ever been a tenor who could reach,
seemingly without effort, the high D (no printing mistake...)
the way he did in "Granada" ?

And not just that he hit the high notes. It's how he hit them:
with expression, intelligence and, wherever required (mainly in
song and operetta), with wit and charm.

His Lieder are exemplary, his Italian songs probably more impressive than most Italian tenors'.

If one imagines that Wunderlich was just at the beginning of his career, one shudders at how great he would have become. I think he would have been mentioned in one breath with Caruso and Gigli.

What a huge loss to music, indeed.

One Of The Finest Male Singers We Will Ever Know.......2000-10-29

I don't claim to know a great deal about opera and my knowledge of great classical music singers -- German or otherwise -- is limited to the usual list of suspects and divas. But as far as I'm concerned, Fritz Wunderlich possessed one of the greatest God-given voices you will ever hear in ANY type of Western music. If you ever wondered why so many music critics still lament this man's tragic death before he could become a household name, I would advise you to purchase this collection. Good Lord, what a voice! Believe me, once you hear ol' Fritz belt out a few tunes, you won't be thinking of any other male singer in any other type of music (whether it's Pavrotti, Domingo, Melchior, Vickers, Fischer-Dieskau, Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Elvis, George Jones, Sam Cooke or even Bob Dylan) for some time. Herr Wunderlich was simply in a class by himself, and you are also strongly urged to get his EMI recording with Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Be warned, though, on that one. Not only will he shatter your heart with his singing of Mahler's sad lyrics, but he's liable to cause you lockjaw with his unique, incomparable phrasing.

Beware of Edited Tracks.......2007-05-03

I'll reiterate the other reviewer who warned of edited tracks. I purchased a combined May Blitz and Second of May CD some time ago and found severe edits that made me return it. It might or might not be the same one that is offered here, but I don't see individual track times listed. The worst edit was a big chunk (half a minute) chopped out of the guitar-frenzy middle of Fire Queen, which for me was a loss of the best part of the best song on the better of the two albums. I had purchased both the albums on vinyl when they were first released, and the Fire Queen track is 4:12 long. Just be careful if you're a fan. You can guess what albums I play on the first and second of May each year.

I love this lot. Not only do I have both albums on vinyl and CD -I also have the killer, opening bars of "Smoking the Day Away" as my mobile ringtone.
Buy this CD, you'll love it. (First album better than second, though)

Watch out! Songs are edited..........2007-01-30

I gave this 5 stars for the content and 1 star for BGO's edition. The two albums are definitely worth buying,... but separately. This version by BGO has the songs edited in order to fit onto one CD. I bought the first album by itself (Repertoire label from Germany) and then this British 2fer version in order to get the 2nd of May at a decent price. Comparing the first album on both CDs, the BGO version fades out the songs early! Not being sure that they did the same with the second album, I immediately returned the BGO version and bought the unedited (albeit expensive) German import of 2nd of May. Yer pays yer money, yer takes yer chances...

Smokin the day away.......2006-05-06

Dig that boing sping reverb quite evident on one channel!! This old style recording style adds to the fun, kinda like the slap back reverb thing that Elvis , and Cash used on their voices that gave the fun sound of their era..This Cd has a Cream blues rock theme that is fun,, Smokin is really their best effort and I guess they could not top that or carry foreward more songs with that impact.. The rest of the songs are a fun blend, some nice tastey 70's guitar riffs.I admit I don't often play it all from start to finish, there are several cuts I really like, but if you like 60/70's styles, you will have fun listening to May Blitz,From a recording stand point the old style and manor of recording is also fun and interesting to listen to,, I do enjoy this Cd, Glad I have it in my collection .. they are a decent band although not really compareable to Cream, the Jack Bruce style vocal on "Smokin the day away" had me wondering.. who is that? sounds like Cream.. I asked the sound tec what he was playing, He Showed me his Cd,, the next day I ordered it..Chris

Good album, above the average powertrio..........2006-01-23

This english trio (guitar/bass/drums) really shows of some incredible musiscianship. Good early 70's heavy rock with some different musical influences in their songs.

The first track, "Smoking the day away", opens with a great bluesy riff, powerful singing and strong refrain. This long track (8:19) quickly shows what this powertrio is all about; great guitarsolos built around heavy and strong themes. The track is heavy and hypnotic. A great opener.

"I don't know" has some more great solos and a time-change in there which leads to some really great guitarsolos.
"Dreaming" has the band change to a softer psychedelic sound, more "dreamy", and laidback. But thats just part of this track, for the rest it goes back to its heavier riffs and guitarsolos.
And the contrasts and dynamics between heavy and psychedelic themes make this track work very good also.

"Squeet" shows that this heavy rock band could throw in some jazzier sound in their melodies also, good and catchy riff, long and powerful track again.
"Tomorrow may come" is a great and softer track (again. It's a very good and much needed contrast to the previous heavy and guitarattacks. This shows that May Blitz were a diverse band that could easily write softer tracks that was as 'powerful' and good as their heavier work. "Fire Queen" is a bit disappointing after the previous good tracks. Here a single chord is repeated throughout the track, rather boring. This track could have been improved.
"Virgin Waters" is antoher track that balances between heavy rock and late 70's psychedelia. A pretty good ending track which also has some sounds of waves in it to make it more atmospheric.

I like early 70's hardrock, but not when it gets too plain and bluesy. I was afraid that this would be the case with May Blitz. Too much bluesrock a la CREAM or other bands. But even though the limited instrumentation here, May Blitz really puts forth and gets the most and best out of their instruments and arrangements. At a first listen of this album you might feel you want more timechanges, more shifting timesignatures, but in the end and after repeated listens, you will realise that this album is good the way it is. Hard rock with lots of different influences. Somewhere between 3,5-4 stars.
