Gorgeous.......2007-02-19

Florida Suite is a gorgeous exception to most of Delius' compositions (I'm not a big fan of much of his later work). The melodies are focused, the accompaniment perfect and simple. Listen to how Vernon Handley holds the high note in the string melody in "At Night" to get every achingly beautiful moment out of it. Whether you buy this CD or the William Boughton/English Symphony Orchestra version on Nimbus, you will not be disappointed. As another reviewer said, this is truly a "desert island" selection.

Delius in Nature.......2005-11-30

Chandos has combined past recordings to put together an all Delius disk featuring music that depicts nature, a favorite subject of Delius. From 1983 are the two miniatures On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring and Air and Dance. Cuckoo is very famous, a calm depiction of spring with occasional outbursts by the clarinet. The Air and Dance begins with a solo violin which makes its way to a smart little jig. Both are charming and quaint pieces.

From 1985 are two much larger works, the 40 minute Florida Suite and the 30 minute North Country Sketches. The Florida Suite is in four movements (Daybreak-Dance, By the River, Sunset-Near the Plantation, and At Night). Daybreak is announced by a flourish of flutes eventually erupting into a folk dance. Delius musically depicts each of the movements with much pictorialism; the river properly burbles, the plantation echoes the spiritual hymns sung by the workers, and the nighttime with soft evening breezes as nature begins to settle down. The work is the height of English Impressionism. Delius is an expert at working the woodwinds, brass, and strings in contrast and in harmony with one another, with occasional percussion colorings. The music is lushly orchestrated, the themes are cinematic in nature and convey a natural sense of drama.

The North Country Sketches are also in four movements (Autumn, Winter Landscape, Dance, and The March of Spring). Autumn, with its gently shifting and falling chords is evocative of the French compositional school rather than the English. The starkness of winter opens with extremely high violin and double reeds oscillating in an uncomfortable harmony, one which never really settles. The dance is not courtly, nor is it raucous, but a simple country folk dance. The modal folk melody conjures thought of Bartok or Kodaly, but it is all Delius. The March of Spring is altogether more upbeat and fantastical, ending the work on a positive note.

Vernon Handley conducts both the Ulster Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra with great finesse. Delius' music is trickier than it would seem; often his music is played all too slow with no forward movement. While Handley succeeds, there are better editions (Beecham or Mackerras on London/Decca). The playing on this disk, however, is good. The recording is very warm and resonant, a delight to listen to and at a mid-price range. While I might point you to the other recordings first, this is a good supplement, at a budget price.

Lloyd-Jones is a Worthy Successor to Beecham as a Delian.......2004-04-14

In 1997 David Lloyd-Jones conducted a different program of Delius orchestral (and vocal) music that included the early 'Florida Suite' and the final scene of his American opera 'Koanga.' It was with a different orchestra, the English Northern Philharmonia, and it was very good, very natural-sounding. I wondered at the time - perhaps 'hoped' is a better word - if this might be the beginning of a Delius series on the Naxos label. Well, here it is seven years later and another program of Delius orchestral music with Lloyd-Jones at the helm, this time of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Indeed, the ten works on this disc are recorded in chronological order, beginning with the 'Marche Caprice' (which I'd never heard) from 1889 and leading on to his very last piece, 'Fantastic Dance,' premièred only four months before his death in 1934. (I'd also never heard this piece. Shame on me!)

In between these two not-so-well-known pieces are some of his loveliest creations. There are the 'Three Small Tone Poems,' each named for a season: 'Summer Evening,' 'Winter Night,' 'Spring Morning.' There was originally a fourth piece called 'Autumn,' but it seems to be lost. These works, from the same time period as the early 'Marche Caprice,' confirm that Delius from early on was able to limn the characteristics of nature as well as any English composer ever has.

'American Rhapsody' is a shorter version of the later 'Appalachia' and does not contain a choral section. But it does contain worksongs from the African American workers whom Delius heard singing when he was in Florida running a family-owned orange plantation. It also includes extensive treatments of 'Dixie' and 'Yankee Doodle.' The piece was never performed as written until the 1980s.

'The Walk to the Paradise Garden,' from his opera, 'A Village Romeo and Juliet,' is, of course, one of Delius' most loved compositions. It is given a meltingly beautiful reading here. Following that are 'Two Pieces for Small Orchestra,' containing the vastly familiar 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring' and then the somewhat less-heard 'Summer Night on the River.' I was not aware until reading the excellent booklet notes by Hugh Priory that 'Cuckoo' quotes a Norwegian folksong that had also been used by Grieg. Again, Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra do themselves proud. In fact, I don't know if I've ever heard a lovelier 'Cuckoo' either in concert or on recording. And that includes Beecham's famous recording. Simply splendid!

The CD is rounded out by 'A Song Before Sunrise,' written in 1918, the last of Delius' nature studies. 'Fantastic Dance,' dictated to Delius' amenuensis Eric Fenby after he became incapacitated, is rather more spirited than any of the foregoing and is a fitting close to this entirely glorious concert.

This is an impressive program well-played and -recorded, and all the more so when one considers the budget price.

This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.

An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02

American popular song, whether standards, show tunes,jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."

This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.

Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.

The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.

more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20

I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).

I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.

I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.

At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.

The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.

delightful art songs.......2002-01-02

rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.

carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.

this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.

anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.

one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

Leave it to a coupe of quirky Arkansas buskers preoccupied with all things snowy to deliver a uniquely hatched collection of original Christmas songs. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood have made a name with a family brand of entertainment that combines humor, harmony and imagination. There's plenty of each on Merry Fishes to All, but this is truly a record wrapped with the kids in mind. Surveying the seasonal landscape, the flaky duo sizes up the disappointments of getting clothes for Christmas, having a birthday on December 25, and getting a Cheese Log! In between there's a whacky reworking of a classic called "The Eleven Cats of Christmas" and some simply lovely songs even a hardened old Scrooge could love, including "Snow Is Falling" and "You Got to Get Up," the enchanted desperate plea of every kid who ever burst from bed Christmas morning before sunrise. Really loved this so much so that I gave it for presents this Christmas.
"The Eleven Cats Of Christmas" soon became a favorite of my grandson's and there are too many to list that are my favorites--"I Got A Cheese Log"; "Clothes for Christmas"; etc. Such good vocals, not heard since the 60's groups.

Every year, I have to get a couple of new holiday CDs--especially, the different ones. Instead of "White Christmas" this album starts with chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate...

This isn't just a happy album, though. Trout Fishing shows you the good and bad side of Christmas. How many of you lament the year you got a cheese log, clothes---or the fact that your birthday is too darn close to Christmas?

And the "Christmas Letter" at the end is just too good. If you're feeling down this year, this CD will definitely get you smiling.

This is a terrific album by a folk music duo. At least they are ostensibly a folk duo. Many of the songs here have accompaniment from additional musicians and have more of a rock or jazz feel to them. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children's Album. And while it is indeed an album that can be enjoyed by children, it is also quite enjoyable for adults too. In fact, some of the songs here have lyrics that are a bit too sophisticated to be really appreciated by children. Most of the songs are humorous, but there are a few songs that are played "straight". To sum it up, this is a fun Christmas album that can be enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart.

Another Grammy nomination!.......2004-12-18

I admit it. My family and I are Trout junkies...we can't seem to get enough of these 2 talented guys. We have traveled near and not-so-near to see them live. It's because they really get it, and by "it", I mean the BIG it. As in, "what's it all about?" Things like childhood, growing up, being part of a family, having fun, enjoying each other. And they are fabulous musicians to boot! This album has just been nominated for a Grammy!

With the release of this holiday CD, our annual dilemna of "do we listen to Trout or holiday music?" has been solved. We now have the best of both worlds! The songs are for the most part their original works...you haven't heard them a gazillion times before, but they will become instant classics in your family. Every song is someone's "favorite" in our house, so there are no skipped tracks.

"Snow is Falling" is my personal favorite. I can't put it in words any better than another person who wrote that a real love and respect for children shines through. As I often do when I'm listening to Trout music, I find myself inspired to strive to be the kind of parent my children deserve.

"Snow Day", "Bob & Bob", a great song about 2 "flaky little snowflakes with ordinary names", "You Gotta Get Up" and "The Christmas Letter" are also on my list of favorites. This last one is a touching and pretty song, written much like the familiar Christmas letter sent by many families to keep in touch with loved ones.

"My First Christmas" is a very fun song that cleverly uses titles of popular Christmas carols to tell the story of a baby's first Christmas. "Just Because, Mrs Claus" is a plea for Mrs. Claus to help Mr. Claus lose a few lbs, because "when he was walking rooftops last year, ceilings started cracking." The words are hysterical! After listening to "I Got a Cheese Log" I guarantee you will find yourself humming this catchy little tune at your next holiday party when you come across the obligatory cheese log. "The Eleven Cats of Christmas", or as they call it at our house, "Meow-y Christmas", is The 12 Days of Christmas meets We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Fans of the album My World will be happy to hear a reference to Chicken Joe in this song.

To summarize...great words and music as always. Thanks Keith and Ezra and congrats on the Grammy nomination. I highly recommend this CD. There you go. There you have it.

Wonderful album!.......2002-09-03

I've heard them compared to U2, Jethro Tull, and Neil Young but even though they may have small pieces of each of these bands, they have a style all of their own. If you love well written rock songs with thoughtful lyrics and catchy riffs, this is the album for you.

I first heard this cd at about 3 a.m., because that was when stations were playing this. I believe it was a public radio station(one more reason you should support NPR). I was totally blown away. I am not overly impressed by new music. I immediately ordered this cd, and regularly play it. Good German rock. Like listening to Neil Young with Crazy Horse, playing in Germany(one of the best all time videos). Except they are totally their own sound. You will never regret buying this cd.

Atomic Rooster - 'In Hearing Of...' (Repertoire) 3 1/2 stars.......2006-09-30

Originally released in later 1971,this was Atomic Rooster's third actual album.'In Hearing...' is a decently written and produced lp and all,but it isn't AS rocking as the band's first two efforts. Looked at the CD's liner notes and I saw that even though guitarist John DuCann,organist Vincent Crane and Paul Hammond (Rooster's true classic line-up)is on this album,they apparently decided to hire an extra player (one time Cactus member) Pete French to handle the vocals. While I'll admit French is acceptable,he's certainly no John DuCann. Best tracks to be found here are "Break The Ice",the rocking "Head In The Sky"(this lp can use more cuts like this one)and the two good sounding instrumentals "A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down" and "The Rock". Plus,a bonus track of "Devil's Answer" is tagged on. What I suggest is,if you happen to recently be discovering this band like myself,look for sites online that may have sound clips of this CD's tunes. Decide from there if you like this title.

Great third album from Atomic Rooster.......2006-06-18

Why haven't I tried Atomic Rooster much earlier? They are a band I heard of forever, been aware of forever that Carl Palmer was in this band before ELP (he only appeared on Rooster's debut album before jumping ship to ELP), and I even remembered a local Eugene, Oregon radio station (KRVM) playing "Black Snake" and "Head in the Sky" back in 1994 on a prog rock-oriented program called Deep Water Melodies.

OK, so In Hearing Of was their third album with just as many lineup changes. Now the band included vocalist ex-Cactus vocalist Pete French alongside guitarist John Cann, organist Vincent Crane, and drummer Paul Hammond. Many people call Death Walks Behind You as their high point, and while I have yet to try that album if In Hearing Of is anything to go by, I'm going to be in for a real treat for that album.

Anyway, this is a truly wonderful combination of hard rock and prog, certain to please fans of both, as the opening cut "Breakthrough" demonstrates, with some great piano and organ work, and some nice bluesy vocals. "Break the Ice" features some truly guitar guitar riff from Cann himself, and more great organ work from Crane. "Decision / Indecision" is a piano-oriented ballad which is not typical for the album, but works fine. "A Spoonful of Bromide Helps the Pulse Rate Go Down" (luckily not a parody of "A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down" from Mary Poppins) is an instrumental piece and by far the most traditionally prog-oriented piece. "Black Snake" is a truly nice mellow number, dominated by Crane's organ work, while the band rocks once again with "Head in the Sky". "The Rock" is the album's other instrumental piece, with some Chicaco or Blood, Sweat & Tears-like horns (arranged by yours truly, Vincent Crane), imagine if those two bands sounded more like Atomic Rooster, this is what you get. The CD reissue also includes their hit single, "Devil's Answer", still an excellent song, even if includes Chicago or BS&T-like horns. Oddly, the American LP on Elektra has this on In Hearing Of, but not the British vinyl, so basically if you own the CD reissue with "Devil's Answer", you got the complete American LP. I guess Elektra wisely knew the American audience was not as likely to buy singles so that's why they tagged "Devil's Answer" to the end of side one of the LP (right after "A Spoonful of Bromide").

What's also interesting is the cover is by Roger Dean, perhaps one of his most down-to-earth covers, it bears so little resemblance to the Yes album covers he's best known for, but then Roger Dean had done covers that looked little like Yes album covers like Babe Ruth's First Base (1972) and Gracious' This Is... (1971).

This is an excellent album and a must have.

I just pulled this one out again ....I still believe If you buy any Rooster this one and the one prior are the only ones you need buy!
With John Cann , Vincent Crane and Pete French together as they are here ( the only cd in which that is the case) is as great a hard rockin band as there has ever been!
Buy it crank it up and see what I mean!
I have reveiwed this cd one other time and my feelings are the same Guitar thru a cranked Marshall and a Hammond B3 thru a Leslie which also sounds monster is just the start of the pleasures of this gem!

In Hearing Of Atomic Rooster.......2001-09-14

Well, in our whereabouts (and I was born behind the Iron Curtain) In Hearing of Atomic Rooster (which appeared in a timely Polish edition) was really a very big thing. Not in sales, because it was all copied on reels from friends, but as for impact it made on our minds. It is one of few artists of genuine desperation and world angst. It made you really feel the pain and sadness of being in this world. It had a existentialist grip of few other disks of what is called pop, accompanied with genuine blues "devil" (Robert Johnson type) feeling (nothing to do with posh satanism). Every track in this album is diamond. I steel keep dear my old LP. There is surely nothing similar to it in the modern pop music. It is not heavy, it is not rock, it is sheer genius of two young musicians who are no longer with us to try to explain how they did it.

This is a great example of a moment in the 70's acid rock sound and really just a moment of what atomic rooster sounded like (Death Walks Behind You is the other prime example). I have nearly all versions back to the 33 1/3 original and this cd clearly has the bottom midrange and smooth extended top end to cause in hearing of hearing damage(its too easy to turn the volume up to 11..)nuff said. Not blues, no good time rocknroll in fact this stuff is a real downer and should not be played if you are being treated for depression or anxiety otherwise loads of fun to crank up and step back in time.The best Roooster to start with if you have none.

In The Hearing Of Mott.......2005-09-09

In 1969 keyboard wizard Vincent Crane and drumming sensation Carl Palmer, left mid tour of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown's debut American tour citing irreparable differences with the man himself Arthur Brown, not perhaps the most thought through idea in Rock'n'Roll, but sometimes a musician has to do what a musician does.
Upon arrival back in England it was decided to put a band together around these two musicians, like minded talents were then sought after, Brian Jones who had just left the Stones was due for a meeting with Vincent Crane the day before he was found drowned in a swimming pool, Rich Gretch was asked but had already hung his star to new supergroup " Blind Faith" with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce was asked as well but was determined to forge out a solo career, when Bruce turned down the bass position John Paul Jones was singled out, but he was already in another heavy metal flyer Led Zeppelin. But all these names does let your mind wander into all the different possibilities that could of happened.
The newly branded Atomic Rooster was rolled out with it's debut album 'Atomic Rooster', (1969) with the relatively unknown Nick Graham completing the trio on Bass. The album met with great critical praise but little commercial success, the album is a bluesy affair with not much notice of the heavy rock carnage that was to come. Nick Graham promptly left, (Atomic Rooster never employed a bass player at any time in their following career, Vincent Crane preferring to play the bass notes on his Hammond organ, rather than trust another fickle bass man.) Followed by Carl Palmer who was lured away to be the "P'' in another supergroup "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.
New recruits were sort and two new Roosters were found John Ducann, on lead guitar, who brought along young skinsman Paul Hammond . Immediate success was to follow with the Rooster taking on the hard heavy metal of the day. In November of 1970 this trio's first album was released " Death Walks Behind You" with it's ground breaking Hammond organ sound from Vincent Crane, guitar thunder from Ducann, and powerhouse drumming from Paul Hammond, Further progress was made when the song 'Tomorrow Night' was plucked from the album as a single and reached the Top Ten. 1971 was to prove to be Rooster's year, when they were right at the front of the heavy metal boom, alongside such luminaries as 'Deep Purple', and' Black Sabbath'. A follow up single 'Devil's Answer' was released and met with even greater success reaching Number Two.
Whilst in the studio recording this album it was decided to expand the line up to four with the addition of a vocalist and the services of ex-Cactus lead singer Peter French were employed ,an excellent choice. Although French's vocals were laid down so late in the day that the artwork for the album had already been done, so his head had to be painted onto the inside artwork at the last minute.
The album "In The Hearing Of" was released in September 1971 and went straight into the Top Twenty. The music is not quite as heavy as that of it's predecessor, but that does not mean it has lost any of it's aggression or grit. Vincent Crane's Hammond organ is not so much in evidence with the piano being used to great effect on a lot of the songs. This is spelled out right from moment go when the Rooster strut their stuff on opener 'Breakthrough', with Cranes hammering piano dominating the song as it pushes it's way into your subconscious, 'Breakthrough' is the perfect opener for this finely selected collection of hard rockin' classics. Of the nine songs on this album (Hit Single' Devils Answer' has been tacked on the end of the original eight album tracks as a welcome bonus) two are instrumentals, only five are sung by new vocalist Pete French, Vincent Crane taking lead vocals on the dark and broody ' Black Snake', whilst 'Devil's Answer' featured the vocals of John Ducann having been recorded before Pete French's arrival. Six songs were written by Vincent Crane, three by John Ducann. One song 'Decision/Indecision' does not even require the services of Ducann's guitar work, with Crane supporting French's emotional vocals on solitary piano, a haunting piece to be sure. Pete French gives a great display as a vocalist on his limited opportunities, but it is perhaps the two rockin' instrumentals, 'A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down' and "The Rock' that would of most pleased the fans from the previous album. The only time during the album that both Vincent Crane and John Ducann actually let go and give it some clout. `In The Hearing Of' was a great follow up to 'Death Walks Behind You.' With great development shown in all parts of the band, but obviously too much development, as each individual wishing to stamp his mark, as is easily seen by the development of each track on this album.
With Vincent Crane insisting upon sole leadership of the band, and his exacting standards, this proved too much for the other musicians in the band and before the end of the year the band had splintered leaving Vincent Crane to keep the Atomic Rooster flag flying , which he did with diminishing results with two more albums' Made In England '(1972) and 'Nice'n' Greasy' (1973) both of which departed from the Hard Rock of yore taking a very different Funk/Rock ' slant with vocalist Chris Farlowe on board, much to the horror of Rooster hard rock fans. Pete French went off and formed Leafhound who recorded ' Grower of Mushrooms (1972) Pete French was never to get the success his vocal talents clearly deserved. John Ducann, and Paul Hammond stayed with their hard rock roots and formed 'Bullet', who changed their name to' Hard Stuff', with John Gustafason on Bass and Vocals, recording two impressive albums for Deep Purples newly formed own record label under the Hard Stuff banner' Bulletproof' (1972) and Bolex Demention' (1973). Heavy Rock's waning popularity put paid to any lasting hopes of Rock immortality though.
In 1980 when Hard Rock made a major comeback The Rooster of 'Death Walks Behind You' fame reunited for another stab at glory, but their day had gone.
The name 'Atomic Rooster' still garners great respect in hard rock circles, but it was really only ' Death Walks Behind You' and 'In The Hearing Of ' that were the real thing. The reformation live album from the Marquee (1980), where funnily enough it is John Ducann's vocals, and guitar that are the most dominant is worth your pleasure if you have an inkling to listen to the live beast. But anything else with the Rooster badge on it is generally advised to be given a wide berth.
The world of Rock'n' Roll is not an easy or kind one. Vincent Crane unable to control his inner demons any longer took his own life on Valentine's Day 1989, He was sadly followed by Paul Hammond who could not cope with life outside of his beloved Rooster in 1991. A Tragic end to a band who could of been huge, one of the biggest. But they did leave behind two marvellous albums as an epitaph.

Atomic Rooster At Their Peak.......2005-05-03

The real treat in Castle Music's issue is the long overdue inclusion of the U.S. version of Devil's Answer with Pete French singing lead vocals, making "In Hearing Of" a consistent and inspired album from start to finish. Vincent Crane's vision shines brightly on this album, uncluttered by musical missteps or uncertainty. Virtually every AR compilation leans heavily on this album and it's easy to see why. All of the songs are strong and well executed. If you're going to own one Atomic Rooster CD, this is it.

Progressive / Classical meets Hard Rock.......2004-06-23

"In Hearing Of" was possibly the hardest rocking album of Atomic Rooster, & keyboardist / leader Vincent Crane's, long & varied career.

On this 1972 release, Vincent Crane played Hammond B3, Grand Piano, & foot pedal bass (all @ the same time) in a very aggressive, rocking style behind a very heavy & funky rhythm section...that often reminds me of Bonham & Page, with Emerson soloing over the top. The bloozy vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Spooky Tooth.

Most of the songs have brooding minor key atmospheres, with dark lyrics...but the band sounds like they were ready to fight, & never give up. Vincent performed spectacular solos on almost every song, although there's not much in the way of guitar solos, which ended up causing dissension in the group.

This version of the band broke up shortly after this album's release, & then Atomic Rooster moved into a somewhat more R & B / Rock direction, with subsequent albums.

But if you ever wondered what Keith Emerson might have sounded like playing over the top of the early Led Zeppelin rhythm section, "In Hearing Of" is for you. I saw this lineup play live in San Diego in early '72...they were awesome...& this record is an excellent representation of their live sound.

This is one of my favorite classical albums. I find myself listening to it very frequently. Of particular enjoyment is disc two featuring beautiful and stirring works by Delius and Elgar. This is a most relaxing and refreshing recording that will wonderfully and continually soothe the mind and soul!
