5 out of 5 stars "Sleeping For Years" it is time to shake the foundation.......2007-06-24

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Vincent Cranes greatest contribution to the 2nd Rooster is that there even was a follow-up to the amazing self-titled debut. With Carl Palmer going to Emerson, Lake, & Palmer and Nick Graham heading toward the improvisational outfit "Skin Alley" it seemed a musical death walked behind. Cranes genius should increase a few more points for the replacements. Paul Hammond (First recording session was with Rooster) may not be Palmer but his drumming is tremendous in a demanding album both mentally and physically. John Du Cann from Andromeda (Psychedelic) came aboard as well. Cann walked through the door as a guitar player and singer. Another musician didn't replace Graham's bass. Vincent Crane used the Ray Manzarek (The Doors) idea to cover the bass from the keyboards.

"Death Walks Behind You" The Title track (Fitting as the opener) with the power, conviction, and total gloom is a monsoon. Seeking and destroying everything in its path. A shock to the mind and senses. It is one of the finest tunes from the era and the record was first getting started!

"Vug" already showed the musical diversity. More to the progressive rock sound with all instrumentation, it doesn't need lyrics to engross you every second.

"Tomorrow Night" became the most remembered tune on the album. Catchy, clever, but not common in its construction. There are the Rooster intangibles throughout.

"Seven Streets" brings us back to the darkness. The band keeps us in search for the light. The energy and aggression is an example of why many metal fans of early Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult proudly display this masterpiece in their collections.

"Sleeping For Years" continues the onslaught. The speakers grab you by the throat. The reason Rooster gained such respect (Especially in Europe) they didn't rely on the cliché riffs and simple power chords. There were more complex structures to their compositions.

"I Can't Take It No More" (A John Du Cann penned tune) brings down the altitude only a bit. The words and the music blend as one. Crane stays more in the background, allows the guitar, and drums to be the focal points.

"Nobody Else" Turnabout is fair play. The piano of Crane dominates the spotlight or so we are lead to believe. The first half of the song is Crane solo but then the troops are brought in and it is a full throttle takeover. The pain is evident and we feel it "My whole world has gone away." The most overlooked of the eight original tracks. Give this a couple of listenings to fully appreciate the pain.

"Gershatzer" can be summed up in five words THEY GET RIGHT TO IT. Another instrumental (With a drum-solo to boot) of explosive passion.

Can a five star recording get better? If you get the bonus tracks it does! "The Devil's Answer demo has Carl Palmer and the BBC material will further the destruction (In a good way).

One of the best recordings of its time. The fidelity is fine!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

1 out of 5 stars Classic Gem.......2007-02-12

I had the good fortune to see this band at a festival in the early 70's
The material on this album is as interesting as it was then--My personal favorite is "Tomorrow Night"--Old Hippee music is still enjoyable in this age of digital tunes, and these guys used quite a few gizmos that were available in their day--talk about Jammin' on the Hammond!!!

4 out of 5 stars An unheralded classic.......2005-12-18

There was so much good much in the sixties and early seventies that it's not surprising some wonderful albums and even groups are now largely forgotten. Atomic Rooster is one such group and "Death Walks Behind You" was their best studio album. It was influential in the rise of heavy metal, was one of the best albums for taking advantage of separate stereo channels (listen for the guitars to cross over each other from one end of the room to the other), and is laden with great songs. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PROG ROCK.......2005-12-14

I agree with Joe completely, especially concerning the alledged 'hiss'. I actually listened to that portion of "Nobody Else" several times even with my eyes closed and heard nothing but the music itself. The sound of the entire disc is fantastic. With the bonus tracks, the length is just over 75 min.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Progressive Rock at its Finest.......2005-11-08

Don't be fooled. The so-called "tape noise" mentioned below is so insignificant in the scope of the album that it's hardly even noticable at all. You can't hear it unless you feel the urge to press your ear against your speaker and count the seconds until it begins. In fact, this noise is so quiet and so subtle, who's to say what it really is. Whatever you do, don't let one person's opinion (which is highly blown out of proportion) affect your decision about buying one of progressive rock's greatest masterpieces. The album has never sounded better than this remaster, and the bonus tracks are the icing on the cake.

    4 out of 5 stars Atomic Rooster - self-titled (Sony).......2006-01-21

Originally released in 1970,as this was Rooster's debut record. It featured the one-time-only line-up of:Vincent Crane-organ,Nick Graham-bass&vocals and Carl Palmer-drums.Didn't realize John DuCann wasn't on this album UNTIL now.I've heard some long time fans mention that this first lp from Atomic Rooster wasn't all that. Not sure what they're talking about, but I,personally think it's a good piece of British 'progressive hard rock'.What more could one ask for, specially for a first effort? The better tunes are the rocking "Friday The 13th","Winter","Broken Wings" and the heavy-duty "Before Tomorrow".This CD reissue comes with five(5)bonus tracks tagged on.Check out the last two-they're from a 1970 BBC Session, mind you!A should-have.

    5 out of 5 stars Carl Palmer's finest hour.......2005-01-19

Atomic Rooster (1970.) Atomic Rooster's first album.

Following the release of The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown's only album, that group disbanded. They managed to only score a single hit, the classic Fire. Fortunately, members of the group were not yet ready to call it a day. The group's drummer Carl Palmer and organ player Vincent Crane joined together to create a new group. Completing the group was bassist/vocalist Nick Graham. This new group, called Atomic Rooster, recorded and released their debut album in 1970. Read on for my review.

I'm going to be honest with you - the ONLY reason I bought this album is because I wanted to hear what Carl Palmer sounded like before he joined Emerson Lake And Palmer and Asia. After just one listen to this album, I was blown away - it put the work of those later bands to shame! The album kicks off with the classic hard rocker Friday The Thirteenth. This, my friends, is the way to start an album. It's hard rock that's extremely catchy - not something you'd expect from a band in the early seventies! Another excellent track the album serves up is Winter, which is somewhat of a ballad. The track throws in some flute usage, which gives it a bit of a Jethro Tull feel in some places. And who could possibly forget about Decline And Fall? The track features an absolutely incredible drum solo by Carl Palmer - hard to believe he was only nineteen years old when this album was recorded! On S.L.Y., the band serves up the typical, organ-heavy hard rock of the day you'd expect from bands like Vanilla Fudge and Rod Evans-era Deep Purple - and that's a GOOD thing. Broken Wings is a track that demonstrates a commonly-held belief beautifully - Vincent Crane is a god of the organ. It's amazing how well this band sounds despite such minimal guitar usage! Closing out the release is the instrumental Before Tomorrow, which ends things very nicely. In the end, I feel this album is a masterpiece - nothing less.

Sadly, because the band was never very popular in America, their albums aren't too easy to come by here. You're probably going to have to look in a few stores before you find them - and even then, only music superstores like Tower and Virgin are likely to carry the band's releases. Whether you hunt it down in stores or order it off the internet, get it somehow.

There are really not enough good things I can say about this album. Carl Palmer would NEVER sound this good again! Not that his ELP and Asia stuff is bad (that's good stuff), but this stuff is in a league all its own! If you like psychedelic, organ-heavy classic rock, or maybe you just want to see what the young Carl Palmer sounded like, this album is a must-own. Five out of five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally Out.......2006-07-13

When I was a mere child,10 years or so,I inherited this album because nobody wanted it in my family,it was also very scratched.I listened and listened to it over and over and at that age knew that they were great.

For decades I have been looking for it and now it's out on an affordable cd price. These guys were like Sabbath ,Purple and Heep but were not popular in the seventies ,at least not in my home town. To say it's genius is an undestatement. This is a band who should be accredited with the Metal sound alondside with Sabbath and Purple and Heep ,all to a certain extent.

AR was heavy and dark and gloomy, something that perhaps only Sabbath ,Black Mass Lucifer and these guys were.

A band forgotten in history ,but not for those who were there.

5 out of 5 stars Very sophisticated hard rock .......2006-06-19

This excellent 1970 album opens with some very eerie acoustic piano lines on the track Death walks Behind You, which more or less sets the gloom and doom tone for the rest of the album. With the roaring electric guitar work of John DuCann (aka John Cann) and the thunderous drumming of Paul Hammond, the hard rock aspect is established and provides a nice contrast with Vincent Crane's sophisticated Hammond organ and piano work. What is really neat about Vincent's playing is that he got a number of tones out of his organ, ranging from a majestic churchy organ sound, to a ripping, overdriven tone - he really makes this album work for me. I guess it is worth noting that a bass player is not present on this album, although you would never know - Vincent does a fantastic job with the left hand part in combination with some foot pedal work on the organ. The vocals by John Cann are excellent and very powerful: a perfect complement to the music. In general, all of the musicians are very good and their individual talents are showcased on the closing track, Gershatzer.

Speaking of sophisticated, I think that sophisticated hard rock pretty much sums the style of the whole album up nicely, although this music has also been referred to as early Heavy Metal. I personally don't see this music as Heavy Metal and feel that there is a lot more going on here musically than that exhibited by the early Heavy Metal bands. At any rate, I like this album quite a lot and many fans feel that it represents the high point of Atomic Rooster's recorded output. The eight tracks on the album range in length from 3'31" to 7'57" and feature some absolutely killer Hammond organ by Vincent along with fairly sprightly ensemble work (Vug).

This Repertoire reissue is pretty good and features excellent sound quality, restored artwork, and some good liner notes.

Although I am peripherally familiar with the debut album just because Carl Palmer played on it (I am a prog freak), this is my first direct exposure to Atomic Rooster and it has proven to be a very enjoyable listening experience. Highly recommended to those folks that like a combination of hard rock, imaginative arrangements, great Hammond work, and a healthy dose of doom and gloom.

5 out of 5 stars Mott Walks Behind You........2003-09-12

Just the name alone conjures up thoughts of Demonic Early Seventies Heavy Metal Progressive Rock. You almost feel by natural instinct that if that is your kettle of fish then Atomic Rooster is going to be your bag. Before anyone gets confused by the name we are talking about 'Atomic Rooster' here, not 'Atomic Kitten'.

Atomic Rooster came out with a couple of very powerful early seventies albums. They sounded great, but unless denim, leather, Afghan coats, long lanky hair, mutton chop sideburns, and droopy moustaches are your thing, they probably aren't the best looking band in the world. Not when compared to the three little girls in Atomic Kitten. However, the music... well, it probably will not stand the test of time as well as this incredible collection of songs do. The music, not the mutton chop sideburns as in the pictures of Atomic Kitten, will still look good. In thirty years these guys now look a little dated, but then this Dog has been waiting years for the shaggy dog look to come back.

So who and what were "Atomic Rooster"? They were formed in mid 1969 by keyboard wizard Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer, one of the most bombastic drummers on the planet, after the collapse of "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" and in the middle of an American tour. (Arthur Brown had one hit which was a number one "Fire", but that was it. Brown went on to lead Kingdom Come and released three very weird albums in the mid-seventies. He still makes a living to this day as a celebrity, hosting parties and festivals whilst singing the odd verse of "Fire".) Adding Nick Greenwood on bass, an album was recorded and released with the confusing title of "Atomic Ro-O-oster" . After a period on the road they had built a strong cult following, but then started a revolving door of musicians coming and going. (Mostly going in the early days. John Paul Jones was asked to join, but wisely took the offer of Jimmy Page's to join 'Led Zeppelin'. Jack Bruce decided to stick with his solo career, although fellow Cream band mate Ginger Baker turned up in "Atomic Rooster" in the eighties. Rick Grech was also asked, but he had just joined Ginger Baker along with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood in "Blind Faith". Most bizarrely a meeting was set up between The Rooster boys and Brian Jones, who had just left the Rolling Stones. He was found drowned in his swimming pool the day before the meeting was set for.)

First to abandon ship was bass player Nick Greenwood. He was replaced by guitarist Paul Ducann, whilst Crane took up bass duties using the bass pedals of his trusty Hammond organ. Then prior to going into the studio to record the all important second album, Carl Palmer was lured away from the Rooster to be the "P" in E.L.P. Are we talking Spinal Tap here or what? To any other band this would of been the death knell, but not to the Rooster. Vincent Crane simply recruited gangly powerhouse drummer Paul Hammond (possibly influenced by his surname), dived into the studio, and came out with this classic slab of awe inspiring music. One of the forerunners to form the music that is now called Heavy Metal. Although it was really Crane's band and the sound of the keyboards is dominant in the same way as say Jon Lord was in Deep Purple or Ken Hensley in Uriah Heep, there was still room for the other two to shine. In fact, Ducann wrote three songs on the album as well as getting a credit for the title song. Paul Hammond got to show his spurs on final track "Gershatzer", a number written specially for him by Crane with a fine three minute drum solo. Still today probably one of the best drum solos recorded specifically in the studio by a Rock 'n' Roll drummer .

Opener and title track "Death Walks Behind You" has a haunting spaced out piano intro before breaking into its sledgehammer riff and demonic vocals. It also features the first of musical jousting between guitar and keyboards, again drawing comparisons to Deep Purple. Second in is "Vug", a studio jam that was fortunate to be played whilst the tapes were rolling, so caught in all its fresh excitement. Next up was the much desired hit single "Tomorrow Night", a catchy little number played here to its frantic climax, whereas for the single the record company had faded out to make it a round little three minutes for radio play. The three Ducann songs follow, giving beautiful light and shade to the album whilst retaining Rooster's hard edge, before returning for two more Crane numbers with "Nobody Else" being as close to a ballad as Rooster were ever likely to get. Then "Gershatzer" brings us to a rousing conclusion.

"Death Walks Behind You" reached the top twenty in England, putting the Rooster alongside Black Sabbath and the Rolling Stones. Peter French was then recruited as vocalist for the next album, "In The Hearing Of", which also charted "Tomorrow Night" peeking at no 11 and follow up single "Devils Answer", charging past that to reach no 4. The table seemed laid for world domination, but no in true Strange Fruit style, they even managed to bodge it up from there. Within twelve months of recording this classic, French, Ducann, and Hammond left claiming Crane's impossibly high standards as impossible to live up to. In the eighties Crane was quoted as "I always demand a band that's got a pretty A-plus standard every night". Crane recruited new guys and carried on, but the magic was gone. They reformed in the mid eighties, but the timing was wrong and they ended up being little more than a nostalgia act with Ducann and Crane being the only stable part of the lineup.

Tragically Vincent Crane, who had always suffered from bouts of manic depression, took his own life on Valentine's Day in 1989. A sad story of "If Only"...

But when the Roosters strutted their stuff, they were magnificent. Enjoy a bit of Atomic energy, but leave the Kittens alone.
    Mott The Dog.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth of a Genuis.......2002-06-14

Atomic Rooster was Vince Crane, a very talented musician, one of the best keyboard players in rock, and certainly one of the best composers, sadly underrated, whose life was cut short few years ago, by his suicide due to his illness (manic depression).
On every Rooster album, his songs shine the most, in melodic virtuiosity, and emotional expressions, whereas the songs that the guitarist John Ducann did the writing, the difference is felt, and what we have instead are average 70s rock songs.

But Crane, had a vision, a passion for his music and his instrument and it shows in all his writing, which are very melodic, with very catchy tunes that are guaranteed to stay with the listener for a long time.
Death Walks Behind You is an example of Crane on top form.
The title track, is one the best rock songs ever written..It is a very dark song, that starts with a haunting piano..can even be a scary song!!VUG is an instrumental melodic piece that has excellent interplay between keys and guitars, and a touch of prog rock..
Other tracks on the albums, show Ducann 's influence in cowriting, as they tend to be rockier, but they still have the power and brilliance and touch of Crane, and are very melodic.
The other classic on this album is Nobody Else, a very touching song, with a lovely piano, that offer the listener in the middle a good time change a la prog rock tradition, with brilliant guitar solo.
Atomic Rooster did some great stuff afterwards, esp. In Hearing Of and Made In England, but could not acquire the recognition they deserve.
Crane did another classic 'Headline News' his most progressive and personal/solo album, with a guest appearance by none other than Dave Gilmour. This album sadly remained largely unheard, and Vincent Crane died soon afterwards.
BUY THIS ALBUM on all account, and i guarantee 'Death Walks Behind You' will truly haunt you like no other song can manage to do!!

3 out of 5 stars Atomic Rooster - 'In Hearing Of...' (Repertoire) 3 1/2 stars.......2006-09-30

Originally released in later 1971,this was Atomic Rooster's third actual album.'In Hearing...' is a decently written and produced lp and all,but it isn't AS rocking as the band's first two efforts. Looked at the CD's liner notes and I saw that even though guitarist John DuCann, organist Vincent Crane and Paul Hammond (Rooster's true classic line-up)is on this album, they apparently decided to hire an extra player (one time Cactus member) Pete French to handle the vocals. While I'll admit French is acceptable,he's certainly no John DuCann. Best tracks to be found here are "Break The Ice",the rocking "Head In The Sky"(this lp can use more cuts like this one)and the two good sounding instrumentals "A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down" and "The Rock". Plus,a bonus track of "Devil's Answer" is tagged on. What I suggest is,if you happen to recently be discovering this band like myself, look for sites online that may have sound clips of this CD's tunes. Decide from there if you like this title.

5 out of 5 stars Great third album from Atomic Rooster.......2006-06-18

Why haven't I tried Atomic Rooster much earlier? They are a band I heard of forever, been aware of forever that Carl Palmer was in this band before ELP (he only appeared on Rooster's debut album before jumping ship to ELP), and I even remembered a local Eugene, Oregon radio station (KRVM) playing "Black Snake" and "Head in the Sky" back in 1994 on a prog rock-oriented program called Deep Water Melodies.

OK, so In Hearing Of was their third album with just as many lineup changes. Now the band included vocalist ex-Cactus vocalist Pete French alongside guitarist John Cann, organist Vincent Crane, and drummer Paul Hammond. Many people call Death Walks Behind You as their high point, and while I have yet to try that album if In Hearing Of is anything to go by, I'm going to be in for a real treat for that album.

Anyway, this is a truly wonderful combination of hard rock and prog, certain to please fans of both, as the opening cut "Breakthrough" demonstrates, with some great piano and organ work, and some nice bluesy vocals. "Break the Ice" features some truly guitar guitar riff from Cann himself, and more great organ work from Crane. "Decision / Indecision" is a piano-oriented ballad which is not typical for the album, but works fine. "A Spoonful of Bromide Helps the Pulse Rate Go Down" (luckily not a parody of "A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down" from Mary Poppins) is an instrumental piece and by far the most traditionally prog-oriented piece. "Black Snake" is a truly nice mellow number, dominated by Crane's organ work, while the band rocks once again with "Head in the Sky". "The Rock" is the album's other instrumental piece, with some Chicaco or Blood, Sweat & Tears-like horns (arranged by yours truly, Vincent Crane), imagine if those two bands sounded more like Atomic Rooster, this is what you get. The CD reissue also includes their hit single, "Devil's Answer", still an excellent song, even if includes Chicago or BS&T-like horns. Oddly, the American LP on Elektra has this on In Hearing Of, but not the British vinyl, so basically if you own the CD reissue with "Devil's Answer", you got the complete American LP. I guess Elektra wisely knew the American audience was not as likely to buy singles so that's why they tagged "Devil's Answer" to the end of side one of the LP (right after "A Spoonful of Bromide").

What's also interesting is the cover is by Roger Dean, perhaps one of his most down-to-earth covers, it bears so little resemblance to the Yes album covers he's best known for, but then Roger Dean had done covers that looked little like Yes album covers like Babe Ruth's First Base (1972) and Gracious' This Is... (1971).

This is an excellent album and a must have.

5 out of 5 stars In Hearing Of Atomic Rooster.......2001-09-14

Well, in our whereabouts (and I was born behind the Iron Curtain) In Hearing of Atomic Rooster (which appeared in a timely Polish edition) was really a very big thing. Not in sales, because it was all copied on reels from friends, but as for impact it made on our minds. It is one of few artists of genuine desperation and world angst. It made you really feel the pain and sadness of being in this world. It had a existentialist grip of few other disks of what is called pop, accompanied with genuine blues "devil" (Robert Johnson type) feeling (nothing to do with posh satanism). Every track in this album is diamond. I steel keep dear my old LP. There is surely nothing similar to it in the modern pop music. It is not heavy, it is not rock, it is sheer genius of two young musicians who are no longer with us to try to explain how they did it.

This is a great example of a moment in the 70's acid rock sound and really just a moment of what atomic rooster sounded like (Death Walks Behind You is the other prime example). I have nearly all versions back to the 33 1/3 original and this cd clearly has the bottom midrange and smooth extended top end to cause in hearing of hearing damage(its too easy to turn the volume up to 11..)nuff said. Not blues, no good time rocknroll in fact this stuff is a real downer and should not be played if you are being treated for depression or anxiety otherwise loads of fun to crank up and step back in time. The best Roooster to start with if you have none.

5 out of 5 stars In The Hearing Of Mott.......2005-09-09

In 1969 keyboard wizard Vincent Crane and drumming sensation Carl Palmer, left mid tour of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown's debut American tour citing irreparable differences with the man himself Arthur Brown, not perhaps the most thought through idea in Rock'n'Roll, but sometimes a musician has to do what a musician does.
Upon arrival back in England it was decided to put a band together around these two musicians, like minded talents were then sought after, Brian Jones who had just left the Stones was due for a meeting with Vincent Crane the day before he was found drowned in a swimming pool, Rich Gretch was asked but had already hung his star to new supergroup " Blind Faith" with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce was asked as well but was determined to forge out a solo career, when Bruce turned down the bass position John Paul Jones was singled out, but he was already in another heavy metal flyer Led Zeppelin. But all these names does let your mind wander into all the different possibilities that could of happened.
The newly branded Atomic Rooster was rolled out with it's debut album 'Atomic Rooster', (1969) with the relatively unknown Nick Graham completing the trio on Bass. The album met with great critical praise but little commercial success, the album is a bluesy affair with not much notice of the heavy rock carnage that was to come. Nick Graham promptly left, (Atomic Rooster never employed a bass player at any time in their following career, Vincent Crane preferring to play the bass notes on his Hammond organ, rather than trust another fickle bass man.) Followed by Carl Palmer who was lured away to be the "P'' in another supergroup "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.
New recruits were sort and two new Roosters were found John Ducann, on lead guitar, who brought along young skinsman Paul Hammond . Immediate success was to follow with the Rooster taking on the hard heavy metal of the day. In November of 1970 this trio's first album was released " Death Walks Behind You" with it's ground breaking Hammond organ sound from Vincent Crane, guitar thunder from Ducann, and powerhouse drumming from Paul Hammond, Further progress was made when the song 'Tomorrow Night' was plucked from the album as a single and reached the Top Ten. 1971 was to prove to be Rooster's year, when they were right at the front of the heavy metal boom, alongside such luminaries as 'Deep Purple', and' Black Sabbath'. A follow up single 'Devil's Answer' was released and met with even greater success reaching Number Two.
Whilst in the studio recording this album it was decided to expand the line up to four with the addition of a vocalist and the services of ex-Cactus lead singer Peter French were employed ,an excellent choice. Although French's vocals were laid down so late in the day that the artwork for the album had already been done, so his head had to be painted onto the inside artwork at the last minute.
The album "In The Hearing Of" was released in September 1971 and went straight into the Top Twenty. The music is not quite as heavy as that of it's predecessor, but that does not mean it has lost any of it's aggression or grit. Vincent Crane's Hammond organ is not so much in evidence with the piano being used to great effect on a lot of the songs. This is spelled out right from moment go when the Rooster strut their stuff on opener 'Breakthrough', with Cranes hammering piano dominating the song as it pushes it's way into your subconscious, 'Breakthrough' is the perfect opener for this finely selected collection of hard rockin' classics. Of the nine songs on this album (Hit Single' Devils Answer' has been tacked on the end of the original eight album tracks as a welcome bonus) two are instrumentals, only five are sung by new vocalist Pete French, Vincent Crane taking lead vocals on the dark and broody ' Black Snake', whilst 'Devil's Answer' featured the vocals of John Ducann having been recorded before Pete French's arrival. Six songs were written by Vincent Crane, three by John Ducann. One song 'Decision/Indecision' does not even require the services of Ducann's guitar work, with Crane supporting French's emotional vocals on solitary piano, a haunting piece to be sure. Pete French gives a great display as a vocalist on his limited opportunities, but it is perhaps the two rockin' instrumentals, 'A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down' and "The Rock' that would of most pleased the fans from the previous album. The only time during the album that both Vincent Crane and John Ducann actually let go and give it some clout. `In The Hearing Of' was a great follow up to 'Death Walks Behind You.' With great development shown in all parts of the band, but obviously too much development, as each individual wishing to stamp his mark, as is easily seen by the development of each track on this album.
With Vincent Crane insisting upon sole leadership of the band, and his exacting standards, this proved too much for the other musicians in the band and before the end of the year the band had splintered leaving Vincent Crane to keep the Atomic Rooster flag flying , which he did with diminishing results with two more albums' Made In England '(1972) and 'Nice'n' Greasy' (1973) both of which departed from the Hard Rock of yore taking a very different Funk/Rock ' slant with vocalist Chris Farlowe on board, much to the horror of Rooster hard rock fans. Pete French went off and formed Leafhound who recorded ' Grower of Mushrooms (1972) Pete French was never to get the success his vocal talents clearly deserved. John Ducann, and Paul Hammond stayed with their hard rock roots and formed 'Bullet', who changed their name to' Hard Stuff', with John Gustafason on Bass and Vocals, recording two impressive albums for Deep Purples newly formed own record label under the Hard Stuff banner' Bulletproof' (1972) and Bolex Demention' (1973). Heavy Rock's waning popularity put paid to any lasting hopes of Rock immortality though.
In 1980 when Hard Rock made a major comeback The Rooster of 'Death Walks Behind You' fame reunited for another stab at glory, but their day had gone.
The name 'Atomic Rooster' still garners great respect in hard rock circles, but it was really only ' Death Walks Behind You' and 'In The Hearing Of ' that were the real thing. The reformation live album from the Marquee (1980), where funnily enough it is John Ducann's vocals, and guitar that are the most dominant is worth your pleasure if you have an inkling to listen to the live beast. But anything else with the Rooster badge on it is generally advised to be given a wide berth.
The world of Rock'n' Roll is not an easy or kind one. Vincent Crane unable to control his inner demons any longer took his own life on Valentine's Day 1989, He was sadly followed by Paul Hammond who could not cope with life outside of his beloved Rooster in 1991. A Tragic end to a band who could of been huge, one of the biggest. But they did leave behind two marvellous albums as an epitaph.
    By Mott The Dog.

5 out of 5 stars Atomic Rooster At Their Peak.......2005-05-03

The real treat in Castle Music's issue is the long overdue inclusion of the U.S. version of Devil's Answer with Pete French singing lead vocals, making "In Hearing Of" a consistent and inspired album from start to finish. Vincent Crane's vision shines brightly on this album, uncluttered by musical missteps or uncertainty. Virtually every AR compilation leans heavily on this album and it's easy to see why. All of the songs are strong and well executed. If you're going to own one Atomic Rooster CD, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Progressive / Classical meets Hard Rock.......2004-06-23

"In Hearing Of" was possibly the hardest rocking album of Atomic Rooster, & keyboardist / leader Vincent Crane's, long & varied career.

On this 1972 release, Vincent Crane played Hammond B3, Grand Piano, & foot pedal bass (all @ the same time) in a very aggressive, rocking style behind a very heavy & funky rhythm section...that often reminds me of Bonham & Page, with Emerson soloing over the top. The bloozy vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Spooky Tooth.

Most of the songs have brooding minor key atmospheres, with dark lyrics...but the band sounds like they were ready to fight, & never give up. Vincent performed spectacular solos on almost every song, although there's not much in the way of guitar solos, which ended up causing dissension in the group.

This version of the band broke up shortly after this album's release, & then Atomic Rooster moved into a somewhat more R & B / Rock direction, with subsequent albums.

But if you ever wondered what Keith Emerson might have sounded like playing over the top of the early Led Zeppelin rhythm section, "In Hearing Of" is for you. I saw this lineup play live in San Diego in early '72...they were awesome...& this record is an excellent representation of their live sound.

    3 out of 5 stars Not my Devil's Answer.......2006-04-05

American buyers beware: The version of The Devil's Answer on this compilation is the UK single version. In between the release of the UK single and the release of the US version the original vocalist left the band and so the vocal was redone (by the replacement singer, an octave higher and in a somewhat different style), and the two versions sound very different as a result. Given that there was room on this 2-CD anthology for both versions (without having to cut any other track), it's a real shame (from an American buyer's standpoint) that the US version wasn't included.

    1 out of 5 stars Atomic Crap.......2005-10-20

These guys suck. I used to think that any number of cheesy 80's metal bands were the inspiration for Spinal Tap, but Atomic Rooster predated them all. Don't waste your money on this garbage - if you're looking for some good, relatively obscure blues based rock, go dig up some Blue Cheer albums.

5 out of 5 stars It's Atomic Not Iron And Rooster Not Kitten.......2004-07-10

A near-definitive comp covering the first four years (five albums) of this intriguing and often misunderstood band and the late Vincent Crane. Every album gets at least 5 tracks, and one (IN HEARING OF) is presented in its entirety, minus one track. That alone is amazing enough, but what's even better is that the selection is representative enough so that this is all you might ever really need of the Rooster. If you're at all curious about the band (or, more properly, bands - - the personnel wavered constantly with Crane the Fripp-like mentor and only constant) do yourself a favor and pick this up. It might pique your curiosity even further, and all of the albums are worth your time. It's also mostly chronological, which makes for an interesting listen. Also, a few non-LP tracks (the great 'Devil's Answer' single included) are thrown in to liven things up as well. The early Rooster was mostly heavy, curiously jazz-tinged riff-rock with lots of organ and piano. Tracks like the archetypically heavy 'Death Walks Behind You' and the utterly haunting 'Nobody Else' (an interesting take on isolation) are standouts. By the time Chris Farlowe took over the vocal chores on the fourth LP MADE IN ENGLAND Crane had steered the sound toward a more soulful soft-funk format (the vocals had always leaned that way anyway) to which Farlowe was perfectly suited, fresh as he was from the ashes of Colosseum. His faux-testifying introduction to the intense, piano-driven 'Breathless' is hilarious. Most fans of the early Rooster scorn the later stuff; personally I like it all and find later tracks like the sweeping 'Can't Find A Reason' and the lovely instrumental 'Moods' quite enchanting. Atomic Rooster were analogous to King Crimson in some respects, not the least of which was Crane's continually evolving musical direction. A great collection from a fondly-remembered and missed man and his bands.

4 out of 5 stars Atomic Rooster - 'Rarities' (Angel Air).......2003-12-16

Very well assembled collection of unreleased tunes that's been pulled from Rooster guitarist/vocalist's John DuCann's private stash. Can't complain. It's a pretty decent nineteen track disc that surely holds my complete interest,to say the least.Best songs are the rocking "Death Walks Behind You",the alternative mix of "Throw Your Life Away","Devil's Answer",the demo of "Don't Lose Your Mind","Forward Revealed",the in-your-teeth "End Of The Day",and one of my personal Rooster favorites "I Can't Take No More".Also liked the radio friendly "No Changes By Me".There are a couple of U.S. radio ads mixed in.Very cool! Why don't more artists tag radio ads on their later day compilation CD's?Vince Crane's killer keyboard work is nearly worth the admission price alone.'Rarities' is a good effort of top grade UK heavy progressive rock.

4 out of 5 stars Rare Rooster Indeed!.......2000-10-24

This CD is a collection of unreleased and alternate takes from Atomic Rooster guitarist/vocalist John Du Cann's personal archives. They emanate mostly from 1980-81, at a time when the Rooster had just re-formed and issued their self-titled album from 1980. Also included on the CD are hilarious US radio adverts from 1971, circa the IN HEARING OF... period. And for ELP/Asia fans, two tracks feature Carl Palmer on drums. If you're like me and do not have a copy of ATOMIC ROOSTER (1980), you will find this album enormously satisfying as a replacement/alternative. Some tracks are alternate takes of songs that only appeared as singles after the 1980 album was finished ('Play it Again'; 'End of the Day'). There is also a note warning the consumer that the 'sound may vary due to different studios/years'. I think the album sounds fine overall, just a bit harsh in places, and the Carl Palmer-vintage tracks are in mono.
