Product Description

Tuatara were formed in Seattle in 1996 by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin. The new disc features guitarist Scott McCaughey (R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5), bassist Kevin Hudson, trumpet/flugelhorn player Dave Carter and saxophonist/flutist Craig Flory.

Guest vocalists on this album include The Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Mark Olson, American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, The Geraldine Fibbers' Jessy Greene, Luna's Dean Wareham, John Wesley Harding, Victoria Williams, Gina Sala, and Sufi poet Coleman Barks. Flamenco legend Ottmar Liebert and Iraqi oudist Rahim Alhaj contributed instrumentally.

Tuatara, named after a New Zealand reptile, was originally put together to create music for film soundtracks. But they've evolved from an instrumental studio act into a performing group that dabbles in a variety of genres. The band have written enough material over the past four years that another album, "West Of The Moon", will soon follow this one.

"Musically, the Sun songs are more masculine, with a kind of High Plains Drifter/Spanish troubadour quality," says Martin. "The Moon songs are more groovy and feminine, and definitely just as powerful as the Sun songs."

5 out of 5 stars A Different Tuatara.......2007-06-27

Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Barrett Martin come together to create a different Tuatara release with this beautiful, well produced collaboration of great singers/songwriters and musicians. Songs by vocalists such as Dean Wareham, Gary Louris and Victoria Williams, just to name a few, are interspersed with spoken word poetry by Coleman Barks, the Rumi translator and poet. This is an interesting and thought provoking cd, and I look forward to hearing West of the Moon.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome New Direction For Tuatara!!!!.......2007-06-22

I absolutely love this album! It is rooted in classic songwriting and production and features some of the greatest singer-songwriter-poets in America today; i.e. Dean Wareham (Luna), Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Scott McCaughey (REM), Gary Louris and Mark Olson (The Jayhawks), Jessy Greene (Geraldine Fibbers), Victoria Williams, John Wesley Harding and the great Sufi poet Coleman Barks. Even though Tuatara has made instrumental soundtrack music in the past, this new album shows how they can take that musical finesse and add vocals to it with astounding success. It's like a great western film soundtrack with singer-storytellers providing the narrative. Ignore the small-minded pessimists who only understand simplicity, and explore this new direction in the band - it is well worth the journey.

1 out of 5 stars booooo.......2007-06-22

well, apparently skerik took off or got the boot, and with him went all the fun, innovative jazz explorations. in its stead is a bunch of country rock flavored fluff; fine, if that's what you're in the market for, but it's worlds apart from the directions explored in the past, and highly disappointing to fans of their previous music.

the liner notes relate that the album is about a journey of sorts through hell. i just wish they hadn't made it quite so literal for this listener. a complete waste of time and money.

R.E.M.'s Peter Buck is the selling point for this Seattle-based neo-beat instrumental quartet. The real stars here, though, are Critters Buggin' horn man Skerik and Screaming Trees/latter-day R.E.M. percussionist Barrett Martin. The well-integrated melange of bebop jazz, rock, world music, and lounge-y TV themes makes for a hugely entertaining listen.--Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I've worn this one out.......2001-08-06

One of the many things I was listening to in the 70's (and passionate about) was fusion jazz. I was way into Jeff Beck's instrumental period, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu--lots of those guys. Many today would dismiss that stuff as bloated and pretentious, but I grew up with that stuff and dug it (and still do). Therefore, this disc was an instant favorite with me.

It's an ambitious project, a hybrid of world music, jazz, rock, etc. and to me, it works. Probably because I have said soft spot for this type of stuff. Most of it would make a great accompaniment to other activities where you want a certain type of mood that remains throughout. The one exception is the song "The Getaway," which is the most raucous (and my favorite). This one is an obscure gem, and worthy of more exposure.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for kicking back and mellowing out........1999-06-29

I bought this CD after hearing several tracks used as bumper music on NPR. While it was not exactly what I expected based on that experience, I am not disappointed.

There's a strong eastern influence in many of the tracks - sounding, indeed, like a "smoky Zanzibar lounge," as Entertainment Weekly put it. A more sultry collection would be hard to find.

For me, the true test of a CD is whether I like it more the more I hear it. "Breaking the Ethers" passes the test - and then some.

2 out of 5 stars Good Percussion, Little Else.......1998-08-05

There aren't enough interesting ideas on this album to make it work. While I thought the percussive elements were compelling at times, this album sounds to me like four guys fooling around. Peter Buck in particular, whose rudimentary technique works fine on an R.E.M. album, sounds out of his league performing this somewhat more ambitious material.

5 out of 5 stars excellent mix of jazz, rock and a little swing.......1998-07-29

This cd rocks!! It is a great way to break out of the norm. Every song has its own charisma. From great sax riffs to awesome drum beats. This cd has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-02-23

One of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Falling Pianos and The Hangover are my favorite tracks, but there's not a bad song in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars transcendental..........2002-10-21

This is not smooth jazz...this is not rock...let down your expectations and get your funky groove on. uh, meditative without the snooze factor. even the reluctant preschool listeners had to shake some booty.

also check out fast horse recording's other artists...cedell, gritty blues flavor.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop playing it!!.......2002-08-04

I totally dig on Breaking the Ethers but wasn't too hot on Trading with the Enemy. This new one is more complex...like a good spy movie you never know where it's gonna take you. Great Stuff (IMO), and at least as good as the 1st one! I recommend it highly...too bad Peter Buck didn't do more of this type of music and less of that *other* stuff. I wish there was more Skerik here, but there is a great bunch of musicians who play on this.

3 out of 5 stars B-o-r-i-n-g.......2002-05-02

It was Peter Buck's involvement in the loose instrumental collective called Tuatara that first got me interested in them. I have the first two Tuatara CDs and thought they were moderately good. However, the new one, Cinemathique, is a real snooze. It's got a quasi-jazz flavor - the previous 2 discs rocked more - but this stuff is mostly like watered-down lounge jazz. There's one track, "The Hangover," that sounds like the instrumental jam/break from some lost '70s song by the Chicago Transit Authority (not necessarily a good thing). Then there's the closing cut, a weak attempt at being avant garde. I can't imagine this disc appealing much to anyone. ...

In 1996 R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, and Luna bassist Justin Harwood united under the moniker Tuatara (a large, lizardlike animal) to create music that had little in common with anything they were doing with their full-time bands. Breaking the Ethers was mystical and resonant, combining swirling Middle Eastern melodies, hip-wiggling Latin percussion, and wafting film music. As innovative as it was, the band's follow-up, Trading with the Enemy, makes the debut seem as mainstream as R.E.M.'s hit "Losing My Religion." This time the group has hooked up with jazz players Steve Berlin (saxophone) and Craig Flory (clarinet) and delivered a multitextured musical hybrid that bounces between straight jazz, funk, film scores, and even Japanese koto music yet somehow flows cohesively from one diverse passage to the next. Influences include soundtrack gurus Bernard Herrmann (Taxi Driver) and Ennio Morricone, smoky-jazz greats Ben Webster and Stan Getz, and pimp daddies like Isaac Hayes. Trading with the Enemy is a refreshing change of pace from your average rock side project and one that easily lives up to each member's lofty reputation. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Tuatara tickles the senses in a manner all it's own.......1999-06-27

Perhaps, for the most part, there are two types of people who are unable to appreciate tuatara's musical prose: 1) those are are intrumentally inept; and 2) those far too musically adept. But, of course, there really are only two types of people in the world: 1) those who think they can classify other's into two categories; and 2) those who know better. Regardless, tuatara spawns passionate dances one minute only to be followed by intuitive reflections and meditations the next. A must have for the majority of us affectionate with the'fun is just beginning' non-classifiable jazz/world beat fusion bands.

5 out of 5 stars I was extremely surpirsed i never heard of them before!!!.......1998-10-15

my b.f told me to get this c.d for him, and he insisted on me listening to it as well, i loved it from the first song onwards! i was really surprised that this c.d hasn't been advertised that much! it's great! and its sound is so different, something that we definitely need in the muic industry!!!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......1998-08-01

An excellent piece of jazz-cum-rock-cum-latin and whatever have you, this record is both endlessly surprising and still wonderfully coherent. Masterly crafted by a bunch of very talented musicians - you'll only notice they're much more talented than you thought: hear Pearl Jam's Mike Stone playing the piano, Peter Buck on dulcimer, Scott McCaughey on Japanese traditional koto... Made by such an eclectic group of people, this record sounds nevertheless as if made in a jazzman's heaven. Go get it!

3 out of 5 stars "World Muzak" at its finest!.......1998-07-25

Tuatara should forget about doing music for films (they have expressed some interest in this via interviews). They could make a big wad of cash if they started their own company - a company similar to MUZAK. For starters, Tuatara could market this music as "global elevator music" - music to be played, for example, in all the exotic Sheraton hotel elevators that dot the globe. Tuatara are pioneers. They have created a new market niche for themselves. After all, the locals in Turkenia couldn't play and record like this even if they tried! It takes innovative western entrepreneurs to recognize opportunities like this! I sincerely respect their efforts (there are few bands doing this kind of thing) and I bet you didn't know this: One of Tuatara's members has recorded music on many occasions for MUZAK! I'm sure they pay well, but I hope that this project will put MORE money into the dude's pockets. After all, it doesn't pay to work for the man! I FRIGGIN! ' LOVE THIS COUNTRY. Next time your paycheck gets you down - get busy. DIY! And remember - this music is best heard at low volume, out of a little round ceiling-mounted speaker...

4 out of 5 stars Groovin' music with a "Mission Impossible" flair.......1998-07-17

Initially heard a couple of tunes on PRI's "World Cafe". The first one titled "The Streets of New Delhi" reminded me of the theme for Mission Impossible. By the second song, "Fela the Conqueror", I was hooked. So I ended up taking a detour and purchasing the CD before getting home. This CD just grooves, blending music of all forms, from traditional jazz to melodic latin vibes to percussion laden african jams into a sometimes funky, sometimes soothing, always intriguing musical delight. It's worth checking out. You'd never imagine Peter Buck of R.E.M. fame being a part of this band.

1 out of 5 stars An acute case of buyer's regret.......2003-11-21

I really wish I hadn't bought this CD.I have all of Tuatara's other albums and ordered this one sight unseen (sound unheard?) when it was released. If I had known it was just a bunch of lousy remixes, quite simply, I wouldn't have. You know that saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Well, many perfectly good Tuatara songs are now "broke". All that beautiful instrumentation has been shake-and-baked into a hash of electronic [...]. Speaking of broke, save your money and pass on this CD. Better yet, buy one of their previous three albums that is well worth the pricetag: Breaking the Ethers, Trading with the Enemy and Cinemathique.

4 out of 5 stars Tuatara gets the DJ Mixing treatment........2003-10-28

I own every Tuatara CD and can pick a favorite because they are all very different. Yet Tuatara, and instumental band with roots in Seattle seems perfect for the mixing treatment. Barrett Martin seems to spearhead the project hereas Executive producer, record label owner and primary musician in this project. I like all the new mixes but I think the mixes by New Zealand Mr. Reliable stand out as get it groved up to the point where it could be played in clubs at 4am.
I hope this band of musician will tour again in the future.

Barret Martin has done it again! After experiencing "The Painted Desert", I hardly expected that the second CD could keep up and maintain the groove. Well, he did it! Earthspeaker is another jazz-o-matic experience into the altered state of global fusion. "Earthspeaker" combines past and present with cultural motifs set upon silky smooth surface. "Earthspeaker" is natural jazz with no contrivance. "Earthspeker" is jazz transcending the borders of time and culture. "The Painted Desert", and "Earthspeaker" are the kinds of CD's that find play under many conditions. Cleaning the house on a rainy day, a romantic dinner or cruising a desert stretch in Nevada, wherever you're going, "Earthspeaker" will take you there.

Out of Encinitas comes another really solid San Diego band. I saw them play live with Pinback in Santa Barbara, and although the crowd seemed to show no interest (which didn't make sense considering they were there to see a very similar band), these guys had some great, if not excellent stuff. Give this CD a listen if you like Indie Rock; you shouldn't be disappointed.
