1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

5 out of 5 stars Just gotta love it ! !.......2007-02-04

Ah you just gotta love this cd. It just brings back the feeling of those old school days when music was really real and full of soul. Lemar has that element that most wanna be soul singers in the music industry of the music world today are missing out on. I'd have to say this is one of the best cd's I've bought all year. I hate that this cd could not be released in the U.S. because it would definitely go platinum. So if you're a lover of soul music, this is just 1 cd you can't afford to miss out on. Get this!

My top 5 songs (no order):

1. Beauty Queeen
2. Just Can't Live W/out Each Other Love
3. Be Faithful
4. Someone Should Tell You
5. Tick Tock.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk.......2006-09-27

Once again Lemar has proven that he is vocally superior than most of the R&B "sensations" that have dominated the US charts for the last five years. Each album has been a growth process, and not only are his lyrics maturing, but his vocals remind me of what singing was about before the video pretty boys superceded true talent. I am disappointed that Lemar doesn't get any recognition in the US because he is definitely one of the UK's brightest gems.

Tim Easton's second full-length solo disc is more than a realization of the potential suggested by his little-known back catalog (the solo Special 20 and the Haynes Boys' Guardian Angel). It's the emergence of a stunning young talent aided by a versatile veteran band. A litany of lost loves, broken promises, and persistent regrets are Easton's fodder, but feeling bad rarely sounded so good. Even his darkest tales are told through folk-pop that's bouncier than a bobble-head doll, courtesy of Wilco's Jay Bennett, Ken Coomer, and John Stirratt, who serve as the core of Easton's backing band throughout. And although their role is prominent, much of The Truth About Us sounds less like Wilco than a young Elvis (Costello, on "Happy Now") or Dylan (Jakob, on "I Would Have Married You"). At its very best, the disc shakes those echoes for a sound all its own, as in "Get Some Lonesome," when Easton's simple but evocative lyrics and modest, vaguely husky tenor seem to float above Bennett's whistling keyboard line. --Anders Smith-Lindall

5 out of 5 stars His Best Work To Date!!!.......2004-05-03

Yep, this is his best work. Although it is more produced than any of his other discs(Break Your Mother's Heart, Special 20, They Will Bury You Ep) but none-the-less its the best. He is such a great singer/sonwriter, one of the best today and very underrated. Give this one a spin you'll be glad you did!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not attached to hype.......2003-04-01

What Tim Easton does that makes him special is get rid of any sort of alt country pigeonhole, while producing a timeless album. You know, the kind that isn't classified, but is just good. I reccommend this album to anyone who likes solid lyrics and haunting melodies that leave you impressed with the artistic heights he scales. And I love the last song, because I wish someone would sing it to me.

3 out of 5 stars The Truth About This Album.......2003-03-31

Tim Easton's "The Truth About Us" should have been a classic. A young, emerging singer/songwriter backed by the non-Jeff Tweedy members of Wilco--this should have been a surefire success. Except that somewhere along the way Easton forgot to bring along a batch of engaging songs. This sort of thing happens occasionally, as one listen to the lackluster Neil Young-Pearl Jam collaboration album, "Mirror Ball," will tell you. Easton mines the same sonic territory as latter day Wilco (though I'd place him closer to Josh Rouse), but fails to even approach Jeff Tweedy's (or Jay Bennet's) deft songwriting touch. That's not to say the songs are bad, they're just not terribly memorable.

Overall, an album with plenty of pedigree that is nevertheless a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Listening Stations will be the death of me.......2003-03-20

When I can't think straight I go to a book/music store and wander. That is how I stumbled on this CD. I wandered into a listening station, picked up this CD, read the back cover and went straight to "I Would Have Married You"... the story of my life. I bought the CD for that song alone. The next day I drove the 100 miles to my mom and dad's house listening to this disk on repeat all the way there and all the way home. There is truth in Tim's words but more importantly in his voice. You can hear his soul in the voice that enters your ears like a scratchy whisper. This is a great disk... absolutly worth the [...].

5 out of 5 stars Its all about the lyrics... well... and the guitar too........2003-01-03

Tim Easton has a talent for capturing a moment in time and reducing it to just a few perfect words. He is able to pick an emotion a describe it the same way you'd tell a good story. And while much of the lyrics seem to be about a troubled relationship or some random turmoil, you get the feeling that he's still trying to preserve at least a little bit of the hope from better days. Adding to the lyrics is the music itself. Compared to his last album, Special 20, The Truth About Us has a melancholy edge. Perhaps this is solely Tim's artistic direction, but I can't help but think that it is also the influence of former Wilco member, Jay Bennet. Jay's got a gift for vividly expressing emotions through music. His talent is clearly evident in his contributions to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Wilco) and also seems to be evident here. At the same time, don't expect a Wilco album. Tim's own style and expression isn't lost here and that's a very good thing. I can't guarantee that everyone will like Easton's music as much as I do, but do yourself a favor and give it a listen. And if your ever get a chance to see him play a live show, take it.

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Mary Carewe is a Britisher with impeccable taste in lyrics and a delightful and fascinating voice. This is high-toned cabaret or, as she dubs her intimate program, "serious cabaret". If you like Ute Lemper or Bolcom and Morris, you'll enjoy Mary Çarewe. This is her only solo CD to date, but I can't help but believe that more are in the works for this talented soprano. Her big vocal range is matched by her big voice, which regularly accompanies symphonic orchestras in the UK and Europe in programs of modern music and pop, i.e., would you believe a program of James Bond film title songs with the Hallé orchestra?
