Haunting Soundtrack.......2006-09-02
"Cleanin' Up the Town" by The Bus Boys--this groovy song is another song tightly connected to the film. The song is basically a swing number that gives a narrative of how the Ghostbusters came to be.
"Savin' the Day" by Alessi Brothers--The song is one of the more catchy tunes on the album. The song is an 80s song, but it has aged better than some of the other ditties on the soundtrack.
"In the Name of Love" by Thompson Twins--another one of the totally 80s tunes on the album. It's not very memorable and isn't as catchy as "Savin' the Day".
"I Can Wait Forever" by Air Supply--this is a love song. The song is also a product of the decade, but love songs are forever and this song is no different. It was another tune on the album that made it from the album to the charts and can be heard every Valentine's Day on radio stations around the country.
"Hot Night" by Laura Branigan--this tune has a driving beat and strong female vocals. Once again it's a product of the 80s and hasn't aged as well.
"Magic" by Mick Smiley--this number begins as a short of cheesy love song, but then halfway through changes tempo and direction completely and becomes native in percussion style and in the chanting of "I believe it's magic" and "magic". Quite unusual and more reminiscent of songs from the late 1970s or foreshadowing of things to come in the very early 1990s.
"Main Title Theme (Ghostbusters)" by Elmer Bernstein--this circus-sounding song captures the general comic, yet slightly scary feel of the movie perfectly. "Dana's Theme" also by Bernstein invokes the beauty and sensuality of the movie's chief female character and Peter's love interest, Dana.
"Ghostbusters (Instrumental)" by Ray Parker, Jr--the album is bookended by the Ray Parker, Jr. numbers. The song isn't as endearing as the vocal version, but it's a fitting closing number.

Not Perfect - but a Different Compilation.......2007-02-11
One fact that I find amazing about Inxs is that this six-member band stuck together from their formation in the late 1970s through Michael Hutchence's untimely death in 1997. During this period, the band would release 10 studio albums, 1 Greatest Hits album, and 1 Live album. This has allowed the band to meld together and grow professionally. Much of this is due to the fact that three band members are brothers: Andrew Farriss (Keyboards), Jon Farriss (Drums), and Tim Farriss (Guitar). The other three members also stuck tightly with the band the whole way. These members include: Michael Hutchence (Lead Vocals), Garry Gary Beers (Bass), and Kirk Pengilly (Guitar and Sax). Hutchence - known for his long hair and theatrical performances in concert often gets the most publicity. But the remaining five members all make major contributions from a musicianship standpoint. In addition, Hutchence is not just eye candy - he plays a key role in the songwriting.
I think Inxs' musical style can be considered an offshoot of the punk and new-wave movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Early in their careers, they definitely fit in with the synth-pop movement of the early 1980s. By the time 1987's "Kick" was released, the band began to incorporate some more traditional funk and rock sounds into their portfolio - particularly with the use of guitars. This corresponded very nicely to the 80s music landscape transitioning from synth-pop to more guitar laden sounds. However on all of its releases the band always stuck true to their roots throughout this 15-year period.
"Original Sin" is unique for one reason; it wasn't intended to be a greatest hits album. As the liner notes indicate, it is intended to be a "sampler" from Inxs' first six albums. This covers material from the hard-to-find self-titled debut album ("Inxs") through their peak album, 1987's "Kick". There are three songs included from each of the six albums, so each album is equally represented. The nice thing is the rulebook was thrown out. Many of the songs picked are not the first songs that come to mind, although there are some fan favorites like "Original Sin", "Devil Inside", "Listen Like Thieves", and "Don't Change". These songs may be known to the longtime fan, but represent something new to a newbie Inxs fan.
The six albums include:
"Inxs": "Just Keep Walking"; "In Vain"; "Learn to Smile"
"Underneath the Colours": "Underneath the Colours"; "Horizons"; "Barbarian"
"Shabooh Shoobah": "Don't Change"; "Spy of Love"; "Here Comes"
"The Swing": "Original Sin"; "Melting in the Sun"; "Johnson's Aeroplane"
"Listen Like Thieves": "Listen Like Thieves"; "Same Direction"; "Biting Bullets"
"Kick": "Devil Inside"; "Wild Life"; "Calling All Nations"
Do they get it right with the sampled songs? They don't - there are plenty of "hidden gems" that are not included - such as "Golden Playpen" (from Shabooh Shoobah)"; "Dancing on the Jetty" and "Love Is (What I Say)" from "The Swing"; and "Tiny Daggers" from "Kick". However this collection does include a plenty of other hidden gems that many fans may not realize. The nice thing is that there is material from the first two Inxs albums ("Inxs" and "Underneath the Colours"). While the "Shine Like It Does" anthology is the most comprehensive Inxs compilation out there, it also comes up extremely short from the material from these first two albums. This is the best place to find material pre-"Shabooh Shoobah" with the exception of getting the physical albums themselves. Fans who haven't heard songs like "Just Keep Walking", "In Vain", "Horizons", "Here Comes", "Melting in the Sun", and "Same Direction" are going to be pleasantly surprised of the depth of the body of work produced by Inxs.
The nice thing is that this collection does "sample" these tracks in chronological order from which they were released. This makes things nice because you can hear the transformation from Inxs' punk and new-wave to a more mainstream rock sound.
As mentioned this collection only covers material through Inxs' 1987 "Kick" album. In 2006 Inxs would release the sequel to "Original Sin" entitled "Taste It: The Collection". "Taste It" picks right up where "Original Sin" left off and also "samples" the remaining Hutchence-era material from "X" to "Elegantly Wasted" - including material from "The Greatest Hits" (an early 1994 compilation that also had some original songs) and "Live Baby Live". Together, these two will make interesting additions to any fans collection.
The liner notes contain a discography and a short-write-up on the music of Inxs and information about the "Original Sin" compilation. The only real issue is that this material may not appeal to longtime Inxs fans. The deep Inxs fan will have this material already and might second-guess some of the songs that were "sampled" for this collection. Still this isn't your ordinary collection and as an owner of many Inxs albums, I still felt compelled to have this in my collection. One can't argue with the quality of the end product. This collection is definitely worth checking out.

Typical Disco Dance Remixes.......2006-04-28
In the later days of disco (after the classic period of the Donna Summer and the Bee Gees), it was common to take New Wave music and electronically remix and extend it. These were sold as EP's, which were basically singles on a 12 inch record and played in discos. Some of the extended mixes were very good. One of my favorites was Blonde's Rapture. Others were done poorly or were just annoying. That is what I think of most of the ones on this CD.
The best extended disco mixes included involvement from the band with new music being recorded and being edited in to the original. The worst consisted of outsiders taking the music and just looping sections of it. The Thomas Dolby 12 x 12 is very good.
Most of the tracks here are extended just by simply looping sections of it. This type of music is really a struggle to sit through. It is boring if you just sit and listen to it. If you have it in the background, the constant looping is just annoying. It is if you had an LP that got stuck.
Where there are new additions, they are just silly noises. There are whoop, whoops from Byrne. And nyeah, nyeah's from the band.
This music type of music is only of any value for dancing. So, if you turn you family room into a disco, with flashing lights and really loud stereo, you might enjoy it. However, I think there is much better dance music out there.
A much better dance CD and/or DVD from the Talking Heads is Stop Making Sense.
Drinking?.......2001-03-22
Drinking in college.
Apart from the regrettable ommision of an extended cut of "Road to Nowhere," this collection hits on every hot track from "Little Creatures," and "True Stories."
If you went to NIU, you are attempting to refill a Growler Bucket while not loosing track of some girl who only calls you while she's drunk, and loves the song "And She Was."
These Talking Head songs were tailor made to be stretched and syncopated, and this collection is nicely mastered are artfully aranged.
Such fun.
So, 4-stars sober, 5 after a bucket or two.

A nice start..........2005-03-05
This is definitely not a heavy metal album. Most songs here are blues based with a tinge of psychedelic, Hendrix-inspired whammy bar thrown in for good measure on a song or two.
The first couple songs don't break new ground, but the third song, "Winter", is atmospheric and blends into the next three songs, "Deep Freeze", "Winter Retreat", "Cheater". Other than title, it's not clear they have anything, thematically, to do with each other, but that's how they play out. "Deep Freeze" is a Jimi Hendrix whammy-bar fantasy which dissolves nicely into "Winter Retreat". "Cheater", the last song in the group, is a song in which the protagonist finds his woman and another man in bed. Angry and powerful.
"Never Satisfied" is not a bad song and the last line really sums up most people's nature.
"Run of the Mill" is, in my opinion, one of the best songs Judas Priest has ever recorded. It starts off very quietly and slowly and builds into a blues number that keeps the listener riveted to the restrained, tasteful guitar playing of KK Downing. The song builds to a haunting, sad, desperate ending and Rob's vocals have rarely been this dramatic. The ending crescendo rises, floats, and slowly fades out. 8 minutes of restrained greatness.
"Dying to Meet You" is a slow, plodding number that picks up about half way through the song. Interesting topic matter, but not a stand out track.
"Caviar and Meths" is a curious instrumental snippet from a song that was never released in its entirety. This two minute gem is all they released from that performance and shows a softer side the band didn't often reveal.
While I wouldn't recommend this as the first purchase for someone casually interested in the band, it is certainly a worthy addition for the variety it contains and serves to illustrate the contrast that exists between this, their first album, and their much heavier, nearly perfect, second album: Sad Wings of Destiny.
Judas Priest.......2005-01-29
Priest classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-12-05
This album has some great elements in it. There's some pink floyd moments, led zeppelin, and definately some black sabbath. Although they came out a little later than sabbath, zeppelin, and maiden, JP has become a HUGE influence on the direction metal took and I wouldn't hesitate to say they are in the top 5 hard rock/metal bands of all time.
No metal collection should be considered complete without Rocka Rolla.
i love this cd.......2003-07-13
Their Most Under-Rated Album.......2001-12-12
The album kicks off with "One For The Road" and tells of the good and bad things of being out on tour for a long time, a good hard rocking tune in a Grand Funk Railroad way. "Rocka Rolla" is one of their most interesting tunes, kind of a dance-blues hybrid if you can imagine that!!! "Winter" , "Deep Freeze" and "Winter Retreat" all go together well, the most epic tunes on this album, telling of living in a remote area up north and being away from someone you love. Musically its almost doomy, then takes a turn for twisted guitar feedback and effects that make you feel as if your trapped in the midst of a blizzard. Then it all ends with a very melodic piece to end "Winter Retreat" signaling everything may one day be alright. "Cheater" is one of my favorites here, a great hard rocking main riff and very angry lyrics when a guy comes home late from work to find his woman in bed with a stranger, and how they plead forgivness and as he is looking to a loaded 44, decides they are not worthy of it!!! "Never Satisfied" is about never being happy as a musician, no matter how big you might make it, always feeling like you can better yourself, and how hard it is to keep a band together in the early struggling days. A good solid doom style song. Next up is "Run Of The Mill" and is the longest, most progressive song here at eight and a half minutes, questioning at the end of your life if you got to achieve everything you wanted or if you just followed everyone else. "Dying To Meet You" is my favorite here, starting out melodic and progressive then quickly shifting into a doom filled rocker, this one would have been great live, even today. Lyrically it seems to be about someone who died and came back to life early one morning, at least in spirit, only they don't know they died, as in the line "Picking Out Landmarks, That Said I Was Dead." It seems he is dying to meet someone who was close to him to in fact find out who he was, very deep lyrics. The album closed with the brief instrumental "Caviar And Meths" but this re-issue contains an early recording of "Diamond And Rust" which they would later record on the "Sin After Sin" album and the best version is on "Unleashed In The East". I wish they would bring back these classic forgotten songs, or at least re-record them and give them the production they deserve, I bet then the band and everyone would have a very different opinion of them, they are all very good.
