Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Margo Timmins is one of the more ponderous singers in all of rock. Her elegant, yearning vocals are still soothing listeners into a false sense of security as she downplays human disaster scenarios, trailer park homicides, and anxious couplings on the Cowboy Junkie's tenth studio album. Better with time.......2007-04-29

One Soul Now actually sounded great to me the first time I listened to it back in 2004. Then, after a while it sort of fell off my rotation. Recently I picked it back up and it sounds better than before. I don't try to imagine how music "should" sound, or get freaked out when a band's newer work doesn't sound like the previous stuff... and this CD does depart quite a lot from earlier stuff by CJ. Yes, there are slow, dirgelike songs with low, sad, even despondent lyrics... but hey people, this is the Junkies we're talking about, not Blondie... they have made no secret of their propensity toward gloomy music. It is well-done gloomy music, and not every song is a melancholy lament. To the reviewer who took pot-shots at "Simon Keeper"... well, actually the lyrics are rather clever, and they get the point across quite effectively. I don't like this CD as much as Pale Sun Crescent Moon or the incomparable Trinity Sessions, but it is one of the top three CDs in CJ's library according to... me.

Furthering The Junkies (New) Sound.......2006-10-30

Before laying out the tracks that would be included on 2004's "One Soul Now", the band made it a point to inform fans that they were buying up old and rare recording equipment that would stamp a feel for this album. Hearing that, I imagined that the unmistakeable sounds of hiss, pops, and cracks would be the vinyl-like bedrock for these songs. While there is no noticable distortions to this album's sound, just knowing the Junkies are integritable to analog recording was good enough for me.

"One Soul Now" seems to be a bit mis-concieved amongst hard-core fans. After my first listen I was somewhat alienated as well, but not by the songs themselves, but why the arrangement of all these songs are on the same album creates the uneasy listen. This release is negatively bi-polar (and yes, there IS such a thing as positive bi-polarness) between overly upbeat songs like "Star Of Our Star" and "Long Journey Home" which pair next to the heavy dirges "Hunting Ground" and "Notes Falling Slow".

The song quality (for the most part) is not an issue on "One Soul Now" which is overtook by the sheer beauty of the 'sad' songs. The Junkies have been dipping more and more into the darkside since the near-perfect execution of 2001's "Open" and this album delivers some of the dirtiest and disturbing sounds of the band's tenure. "Notes Falling Slow" and "He Will Call You Baby" are amongst Margo Timmins best lyrical interpretaions of absolute devastation. As the band says themselves on thier website's FAQ section they are simply more interested in crafting sad songs - to which this fan is not one bit going to argue. "Why This One" and "Simon Keeper" round out the dark while the rest lean toward the less-interesting lighter side.

Well, I'm a portuguese Cowboy Junkies fan since "The Trinity Sessions". And my favourite albuns are "The Caution Horses", "Lay It Down", "Black Eyed Man" and, of course, "The Trinity Sessions".
When "Open" came out a new Cowboy Junkies born. Many fans don't like and anothers like. Yes, I like very much!! "Open" and "One Soul Now" are great albuns. The band go to new sounds and new directions. And play and sound very good!!
Play it loud boys and girls. If you want more and more "Trinity Sessions"...well, try Celine Dion.

but certainly not bad. there are a few standout tracks: "one soul now," "my wild child," "no long journey home" and "slide. some others, "from hunting ground...," and "he will call you baby" are rather unimpressive. the bonus cd is better than the main cd. their cover of "darkness, darkness" is one of their best songs.

their new cd, coming out summer 2005, is mostly covers...that is something to look forward to.

another gem.......2005-03-12

For those who wrote poor reviews, or for anyone actually, I definitely recommend purchasing Anatomy of an Album, a behind-the-scenes CDRom of the writing and creating of the album. I think it's only available on maplemusic.com, or maybe you can find it used on Amazon.com. The CDrom gives a much deeper explanation into the nuances of the album. Even without the explanations, the songs here are beautiful, as most of their work. The songs seems to take two very different styles: the slow, haunting pieces (He Will Call You Baby, Hunting Ground to City, Notes Falling Slowly, Simon Keeper), and more upbeat (in tempo, at least) songs. Both make for a captivating collection of some of their greatest work. It may take a few listenings to fully appreciate, but definitely worth it.

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Marcel Dupré is an important historical as well as musical figure, his compositional freedom linking the golden age of Widor and Vierne with the radical rethinking that Messiaen saw through in his great organ cycles. Never doing things by halves, Naxos has reached Volume 9 of the complete organ works--mainly chamber pieces involving organ. Most substantial is the "Trio for Violin, Cello, and Organ," in one sense a throwback to the Baroque line of trio sonatas, but with a harmonic richness that indicates a late-19th-century inheritance--thoughtful, undemonstrative music, persuasively realized by Bruce Neswick and colleagues. The "Quartet" adds a viola to the lineup, but a delightful scherzando apart is a lesser affair, while the "Sonata for Cello and Organ" is a modest but interesting work (at least for the way Dupré makes a telling contrast between the sonorities of the two instruments). Again, perceptive playing from Neswick, whose Indiana organ has a clear, bright sound that makes the generous selection of Chorales interesting for the listener as well as the player. At the price, a worthwhile collection of some unusual repertoire. --Richard Whitehouse

A Masterpiece, Magnificently Performed .......2006-02-07

The solemn heavenly beauty of the Russian Orthodox Saturday evening "All-Night Vigil" liturgy resonates off the walls of the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in this magnificent rendering of Rachmaninoff's masterpiece. In particular, the 'Bogoroditse Dyevo' (Ave Maria) is achingly beautiful. A great performance of a truly great piece of music.

This is an utterly magnificent recording - one of my all-time favorites. I have heard other renditions, but none come close to this particular interpretation. It is sung with such passion, soul, and intelligence that I'm sure that if he could hear it, Rachmaninov himself would be moved to tears.
