A Serene, but Fragile State.......2004-08-04
For me, what defines this album is this beautiful, but hard to describe mood, emanating from this sort of serene, but fragile state--a contemplative state born of both cautious hopes and bittersweet memories and tinged with a certain melancholy. It is a mood that also inhabits and defines the works of Nick Drake and (early) Belle & Sebastian.
Occasionally and briefly, the mood rises--like the sun shining through the briefly parted clouds on a snowy, overcast day--or falls--like the clouds closing again, the snow picking up, and the wind growing to a quiet howl. In the end, however, it always returns to that overall mood--that calm and fragile melancholy.
When describing Sodastream's sound, critics often refer to artists like those above as points of reference. Although these are accurate points of reference, they are, however, only accurate to a certain degree, and without further elaboration, do not do Sodastream full justice. The main similarity between Sodastream and those others artists is mainly in the overall mood, as described above. In terms of sound, however, the similarities are just with basic attributes: quiet, acoustic instrumentation; hushed vocals; etc.
Those similarities aside, Sodastream has a wonderful, unique sound: that quiet, acoustic instrumentation; those hushed vocals; the understated drumming; the distinctly deep, but sweet timbre of the double-base--a really crucial element, which forms the foundation of many of the songs; and an undercurrent of a distinct, but subtle Australian flare all blend together to form this single, seamless and magical entity of sound. Perhaps I'm exaggerating it or failing to properly describe it--but, as they say, you really have to hear it for yourself.
I have hundreds of albums I really enjoy listening to, dozens I really love listening to--but this is just one of a handful of albums that really mean something to me. Something more than just music or art; something deeply personal.
I can't recommended this album--and Sodastream's other albums--enough; it is simply such beautiful and lovely stuff.
A Wonderful Comatose State.......2001-06-01
This is the kind of disk that when you listen to it on the way to work in the morning, you arrive having forgotten everything about the entire drive in (maybe not so safe, but still a nice experience). Give it a shot, if you don't like it chances are great that someone you know will love it.
Chillingly Beautiful.......2001-03-26
This album displays that music does not have to be over worked and over produced. The stripped-back feel of this album delivers an emontional punch that leaves the listener depressed and uplifted at the same time.
Standout tracks on the album are "Able Hands", "Fitzroy Strongman" and "God in the Corner Store".
Not recommended for the suicidal.
