A full-length Coppelia at an appealing price.......2003-06-26

Andrew Mogrelia has conducted a number of full-length ballets for Naxos: Giselle, Sylvia, Sleeping Beauty, and this Coppelia. I own all of them, because I find Mogrelia is one of those rare conductors who make a ballet sound like a ballet.
In concert hall versions, conductors often make ballet music impossibly fast, or simply too unpredictable. (Gergiev's Nutcracker is in this category: fun to listen to, definitely NOT a dancer's Nutcracker.) But when dancers are on stage, they need a regular, dependable beat to dance to. Mogrelia's Coppelia never sounds sing-song, because he uses dynamics so skillfully - but he does conduct at an authentic dance tempo.
Another Coppelia I like and own is Mark Ermler's (ASIN: B0000024CL), but while it's much more than highlights it is not the full ballet. The first act mazurka is missing, and that's a definite loss.
La Source is a bit of an oddity because it was originally commissioned as a sort of competition: half composed by Minkus, half by Delibes. Delibes was generally considered the winner, so he stayed in Paris while Minkus went off to Russia. This album is strictly Delibes, so it's only highlights from La Source. But it does include my favorite, the utterly charming Pas des Fleurs, Grande Valse.

Inspired ballet music at a bargain price........2002-07-13

Although I'm not particularly fond of watching ballets I have a special love for ballet music, and Coppelia is one of my favorites. It is the masterpiece of Leo Delibes who was one of the greatest of ballet composers. Even Tchaikovsky -- probably the greatest ballet composer of all -- greatly admired Delibes' work. This recording presents not only the complete music for Coppelia but also the lovely, but seldom-heard, music Delibes wrote for La Source -- both conducted by the excellent ballet conductor Andrew Mogrelia. And at a bargain price to boot. Please don't pass up this special treasure.

Superb Performance.......2000-08-27

I search for the recording for the complete Coppelia when my daughter's dance school was practicing for it. I found this item. Performance was meticulous. It was recorded in the Orchestra's concert hall over a period of almost two weeks. All digital recording. Well balanced orchestra. Fine details. A good item to collect.

A memorable tribute!.......2006-11-02

The well known Franz Liszt's iron hammer style of playing has been for many listeners a virtue by itself; while for others has been the most powerful argument to demonstarte the majuscule difference between Chopin's poetry and the music considered as exhibition vehicle for the galleries.

But, between these two opposite tendencies, Liszt knew to harmonize and maintain the powerful expression at least in what cocerns with the whole Beethoven's cycle of Symphonies and the enigmatic Berlioz 's Symphonie Fantastique.

To preserve the spirit of the work is just by iotself a superb achievement, because among the annals of the musical story this enraptured composition and the way it was composed, not only nourished but flamed still more the febrile romantic spirit of the second half of the XIX Century.

Leslie Howard made the most towering and brilliant performance until this date of this notable and original Op.

His demoniac technique was under the service of the composer without excess of pyrotechcnics, theatrical grimaces or easy concessions.

"Transcription Fantastique"!.......1999-12-31

One of the defining masterworks of the symphony orchestra has to be Hector Berlioz' "Synphonie Fantastique" -- its sheer size, larger-than-life range of colorations and effects, and overwhelming emotions make it a work that could only have been written for a modern orchestra. Or maybe .... ? Enter Franz Liszt, the creator of the piano recital, the man described only half-facetiously by Tchaikovsky as the "Wizard of Weimar" ... and perhaps the only person who could transcribe and do justice to Berlioz' monumental work. Using his ten fingers, his uninhibited virtuosity and his uncanny ability to replicate the sound of an entire orchestra on a piano keyboard, Liszt more than does justice to his friend Berlioz in his amazing transcription of the "Symphonie Fantastique." For his part, Leslie Howard, in perhaps the most spectacular recording of his monumental 94-CD series of Liszt's complete piano compositions, gives an electrifying rendition of this work. Listeners, relax and enjoy ... and pianists, eat your hearts out!

Liszt's transcription of his buddy Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is the reason to buy this CD. The rest ain't too shabby, either. Howard's performance is up to his usual high standards.

Album Details

This Very Well Done Album was Recorded in Tucson (Az), Do Not Let the Overly Pink Cover Art and the Cute Bunny Concept Turn You off as You Would Miss Out on Some Serious Groovy Rock with Major Funk and Jazz Touches.

I love the little rabbits. They have a cool jazzy house kind of sound, even if you don't know French give them a listen.

the french rabbits have songs which are almost'stereotypes' of songs. LA MER,YEAH,and KAREN are fairly good examples.
However, songs such as SIMCA 1000 are both catchy and then quickly become much more than just that.
I have not yet heard this whole Cd cause it is, like most
little rabbits material, flippin hard to find.
I have loved however all the tracks i could hear ou of LA GRANDE MUSIQUE.A personal favorite so far being 'des hommes, des femmes, etc...', SIMCA 1000, and out of "YEAH"'s Nobody's birthday party. If you have the chance, download it.

2 albums are available online-here. There is one which
is available from VIRGIN STORES, called 'GRAND PUBLIC'.
It is an older album ('96, i think) and it isn't as 'jazzy' but it still could be played in arizona's petrol stations and diners and fit in. It has some good songs but pehaps not the best- for my taste, of course--i'm waiting to hear their other stuff-- LA TOUR EIFFEL gets my hat off, and so does POSTE DE RADIO.
If you know that these guys are performing in the UK,
PLEASE let me know. As cult as they are, i wouldnt
want to miss it.
