Limited Digi-pack edition. Kurtis, the man, is lead singer and founding member of Kurtis the band who have just completed their first album - "Foundations". Kurtis' debut album 'Foundations' is 100% live with the exception of one studio track. The recording was made over a two day period. The band set up in a hall in Byron Bay, the first day was spent in live rehearsal, followed by the second day performing in front of an intimate small candle-lit enthusiastic audience. Tracks were lifted from both days to make up 'Foundations'. The studio track 'Love Me Like You Do' was written and recorded by Kurtis just after signing with Roadshow Music. Roadshow/Sony. 2004.

Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges. Good but some filler songs, too.......2007-07-18

I was around during this time period, and saw James Brown live because he was my mother's favorite live performer. I was surprised, however, at the number of filler songs in this collection. Some remastering would have been nice, too. Standout songs that held up for me were "Out of Sight," "Money Won't Change You," "Cold Sweat," and "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing." Even though the instrumentals on "Say It Loud" sound a little stark now, I remember how I felt when I heard the song over the radio back then. It was a bold message and messenger, truly uplifting for its time.

Truly a fine compilation and very nicely packaged. I like the CD being in the sturdy(!) slip-case.

The song choice is great. The Live Cuts are Killer. I have no regrets with this purchase!

Of the many JB comps I own this is my 2nd favorite (In A Jungle Groove is the first!).

Ever pay for a James Brown album and within five minutes of getting it out of the wrapper you realized you were had? Ever heard James accompanied by a Casio keyboard recorded in a broom closet? Must be bad needing a quick album release to satisy some recording contract agreement James made to get a few bucks.

Well this is NOT one of THOSE.

This is simply a fabulous collection of greatest recording. It demonstrates why James was considered a genius. And his band was so powerful they could blow down walls. And make you dance, Man. And smile. And get funky RIGHT NOW.

A must for your next soul funk dance party. Put it on and EVERYBODY will get up off a that thing and bust a move. I guarantee it.

More Than the 2 Hits..........2006-03-15

I love The Foundations who made a lot of great music in the sixties. Of course everyone has heard "Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup", but they had so many great songs. I had a ten inch compilation from the early'80's with about ten songs, all of which are on this disc. They would've fit in very well with a lot of the Motown groups, although they were a multi-racial English band. I mistakenly gave this recording one star when I intended five.

A couple of pop classics.......2005-03-14

So many singers and groups are remembered for just one song. The Foundations, whose music was at the R+B end of the pop spectrum, fared slightly better as they had two major international hits.

Baby now that I've found you, their debut single, topped the British chart in November 1967 and just failed to make the American top ten. It has a really bouncy tune that hides the sadness of the lyrics. In the mid-nineties, Alison Krauss gave the song a completely different interpretation, slowing the song right down. Both versions are highly enjoyable in their different ways.

Build me up buttercup, another upbeat tune but this time with upbeat lyrics, peaked at number two in Britain but topped the American charts. This song was originally intended for the Paper Dolls, but a mix-up meant that they did not turn up to record it at the scheduled time, so the song was given to the Foundations instead.

The Foundations had a few other hits. In the bad bad old days was a top ten UK hit, while Back on my feet again made the UK top twenty. Two other songs, Any old time and Born to live born to die, were minor UK hits while My little chickadee was a minor American hit.

The rest of this CD contains many other excellent songs although it omits all the obvious cover versions that are often featured on Foundations compilations. Unless you want those covers, you find all the Foundations tracks that you need here.

FOUNDATIONS ARE MUCH MORE THAN A TWO HIT WONDER.......2002-04-12

...I always knew their two big hits, Baby Now that I've Found You and Build Me Up Buttercup from the radio and I decided to take the plunge into the group's other music. What I discovered is that though the hits are good, they are not the best songs on this realy good cd. In the Bad Bad Old Days, Born to Live Born to Die, Baby I Couln't See, Take A Girl Like You, My Little Chicadee, Something For My Baby and especialy the ridiculously catchy Stoney Ground are all more than enough to convince any listener that this group is wildly underated. A must have sixties classic.

The Very Best Of The Foundations Review -error correction.......2002-04-02

Agree that the collection is a good representation of The Foundations but it is misleading. First of all because Colin Young, previously known as the lead singer of 'Joey Young and the Tonicks'in 1965-66,replaced Clem Curtis in The Foundations in 1968. Secondly, because their greatest hit, Build Me Up Buttercup, featured Colin Young as the lead singer, not Clem Curtis so to write that the group 'fell off a cliff'when Clem Curtis was replaced by Colin Young does not make sense!!

Really, really, REALLY BAD!.......2006-11-22

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

Deceptive Title & Trade Dress.......2006-07-27

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Not worth your money.......2006-05-14

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

LOTR meets New Age.......2005-10-01

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

Combining the talents of the internationally renowned DJ John Digweed and the lesser-known but formidable producer Nick Muir, Bedrock broke wide open with the massive 1999 trance anthem Heaven Scent. This collection starts with a glorious, remixed version of that song and doesn't let up, launching into an impressive array of energetic trance. Bedrock doubles as the name for Digweed's U.K. club as well as the pair's label, so much of the record is given over to other like-minded DJ's and producers associated with the twosome. Each gets a chance to spin their finest wax. Danny Howells, who released a fine contribution to Global Underground's "Nu-Breed" series last year, gets his licks in early, mixing up the second track, "Repercussion" with a typically lithe touch. The great New York DJ Jimmy Van M and Austin Leeds make appearances as well, with Leeds giving a graceful feel to the second disc's more ambient leanings. --Matthew Cooke

K well first off, I'm not the biggest Austin Leeds fan out there. I first heard a few of his tracks on the Digweed&Sasha 'Communicate' CD and I really didn't care for his tracks. So it saddens me to see Austin Leeds dominate the track listing here. All in all, the rest of the CD is good. I luv Steve Lawler and find his music reaches me. The other selected Artists are good too. And the remix of Heaven Scent is a classic as well. This compilation would have received more marks if the artist selection was more varied and also had more rare or unreleased material on here. Finally it would be nice to see John Digweed release an Artist CD as well. Oakenfold and Sasha both have there's, lets see Digweed give it a try!!

A solid buy for progressive DJs and hard-core Bedrock fans.......2002-12-09

The ultra-trendy progressive house label Bedrock (founded by John Digweed) released FOUNDATIONS in 2000. This two CD collection brings together many unreleased remixes of tracks features on the label, and it's a interesting release both for DJs who want to get their hands on tracks not found anywhere else and for fans of progressive who just want to hear more of their favourite producers.

FOUNDATIONS opens with Bedrock - "Heaven Scent (John Johnson Mix)". It's a great mix, even though "Heaven Scent" in all its forms has been played out since its appearance in 1999, this is one of this collection's more captivating tracks. The two remixes of Science Dept. tracks, "Repercussion (Funk Function's Future Mix)" and "Persuasion (Dominica Mix)" are slow, hypnotic songs that would be easy to build a set up with. Van M & Leeds - "More (Austin's Unreleased Mix)" is an idiosyncratic mix that regrettably sounds too dated for use today. Ditto for the two Moonface tracks here; "Futurised Fears" and "Overactive" were key tracks in the progressive house scene of two years ago, but now could be attacked as bog-standard progressive fodder. Disc 1 closes with Bedrock - "Voices", which is a track that I think has gotten better with age.

The second disc of FOUNDATIONS is a bit more anthemic. It opens with Mainline - "Narcotic." Featured one Sasha and John Digweed's COMMUNICATION collaboration, this deep and organic track is so subtle that it may only work as an opening to a set, but it's fantastic nonetheless. Austin Leeds - "Force 51" is an incredible track, featuring a slow buildup to chugging synths that still refrains from being cheesy, and it is perhaps the best track on FOUNDATIONS. Leed's other track, "Moondriver", is a less anthemic track that moves along just fine. The fourth track, Steve Lawler - "Rise 'In (Nalin & Kane Vocal Mix") is the low point of this collection, as the atrocious vocals ruin what is instrumentally a solid track. Happily, FOUNDATIONS swiftly recovers with Saints & Sinners - "Pushin Too Hard (Futureshock's Confession)", an excellent remix that keeps all the catchiness of the original but is full of added surprises. Alchemy - "Bruiser (Evolution Mix)" is a wispy, ambient remix like much of Evolution's work, but with its odd tempo jumps does something new. Revolt - "Moonlit (Room Drumland Mix)" is one of Revolt's most disappointing tracks, but a DJ might find room for it at the end of a set.

If you are just the average fan of progressive house, FOUNDATIONS isn't worth getting. This unmixed collection is really for DJs and hard-core Bedrock fans, who will find a lot to like in it.

Anyone who has experienced the club scene (especially NYC) in the late 70's and early 80's must get this CD POST HASTE! I'm sitting here right now taking a trip down memory lane. The compilation of songs is PERFECT. That rarely happens. All of the selections are not only awesome but arranged well in their order. I seriously urge anyone who was growing up through that period (and enjoyed it) or who is curious about the club music to get this CD. Make no mistake, club/house music has a totally different flavor than your garden variety "disco".

A little different this time.......2003-11-04

In Britain, double albums of sixties pop music have been a regular feature in recent years, include several in the Best in the world ever series, several others in the Heartbeat series and plenty others besides. The same songs come round all too often but this particular compilation has fewer obvious tracks than usual, allowing some forgotten big hits to be included.

There are some obvious songs here, including I only want to be with you (Dusty Springfield), Do wah diddy diddy (Manfred Mann), Oh pretty woman (Roy Orbison), Everlasting love (Love affair), Young girl (Gary Puckett), Daydream believer (Monkees), If paradise is half as nice (Amen corner), Build me up buttercup (Foundations), Locomotion (Little Eva), California dreaming (Mamas and papas) and Hi ho silver lining (Jeff Beck). All of those songs have appeared on any number of sixties compilations (and some of the others are only slightly less frequent inclusions on such compilations) but their sheer quality ensures that nobody minds hearing them yet again.

Some imagination has been used in the selection of tracks by the Kinks (Dedicated follower of fashion), the Move (I can hear the grass grow), the Hollies (Stop stop stop), the Supremes (Where did our love go), the Tremeloes (Here comes my baby), Cliff Richard (In the country), Gerry and the pacemakers (I like it), Herman's hermits (Something is happening), Sandie Shaw (Long live love - not to be confused with the completely different Eurovision song of that title sung by Olivia Newton John) and the Beach boys (Wouldn't it be nice). All these songs were huge UK hits for those artists but generally appear on these compilations less often than other famous songs by the same artists.

Just to make absolutely sure that people who've already got all the above songs, this set includes some songs that rarely feature on compilations of this time. I cannot remember the last time I saw a Don Partridge track, but Rosie (a huge UK hit) is included. Give peace a chance can be found on John Lennon's albums but rarely turns up on sets like this. Let's hang on, Lily the pink, Melting pop, I'm the urban spaceman, Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, Lover's concerto, Walking back to happiness, Morningtown ride and Excerpt from a teenage opera are just some of the songs that sometimes turns up on compilations, but not as often as they ought to.

So this is a collection that will appeal to those who have lots of sixties pop music already but will also appeal to those looking for their first sixties pop collection.

Rare Grooves.......2004-10-02

First of all, this CD is very hard to find now because it's out of print for long even though it's rather popular among collectors like me. You should buy it if you are a real disco music fan and able to find somewhere, I think. Give Your Body Up series includes many rare disco tunes, moreover, in the extended versions in most cases. But this Vol.1 is most recommendable. I like Why Leaves Us Alone and Bad For Me, both of which are exciting up-tempo disco gems and really really hard to find on any CD. The disco version of Free Man is also good.

Great collection of dance-cuts. I have volume 1-3, and I'm glad I decided to buy them. With the exception of a couple of songs, all the jams are full-length extended versions. This is what I've been asking for all along. The average person from that era don't want alot of three-minute cuts from back in the day. Hey, we want the whole un-cut versions and this series delivers.

Plus, while listening to it, I came across a few long-loved jams that I haven't heard in years (decades, even). For instance, as soon as I heard the song "BRA" by CYMANDE, man, I almost cried. And then there's the vocal-version of the jam, "ALWAYS THERE" by SIDE EFFECT. Man, I was looking for these cuts; in CD-format, for a long time.

Hey, if your on a serious quest for great un-cut dance-jams from back in the day; you definitely can't go wrong with "GIVE YOUR BODY UP", it's one of the best series.

Don't Pass Up the '5.......2006-04-16

Can you live without this CD? Yeah, if you own all their "officially" recorded output, maybe. And even if you do, this is still a great alternative to what the record companies thought was acceptable at the time. The MC5 were, and are, the bridge to '60's high energy politicized rock and punk. They were the Beatles of their age, and every bit as important as the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. Fred "Sonic" Smith is gone. Rob Tyner is gone. But what the MC5 brought in their wake is with us every day of the week.

Early Heavy.......2006-04-08

The MC-5 [Motor City Five] was the real deal. The electricity rips through these recordings, opening you up to a new understanding of "rock music". Of course, the blues influence is also here as in all great rock music. Distortion guitar at it's primal majesty. Real vocals that meant something then, though the message may be a bit dated today. Also, try Iggy and the Stooges for a taste of what real rock music is all about.

MC 5 - 'Babes In Arms' (Roir).......2003-12-08

This fifteen track disc is a nifty collection of remixes,demos,
and uncensored edits from MC 5's lead guitarist Wayne Kramer's
own private vault. All these cuts were recorded from 1966-71.
Their other guitarist was the late Fred 'Sonic' Smith, who sings
lead on the pleasant-souding "Shaking Street".I sincerely hope
that my copy doesn't wear out 'cause I tend to play it quite
often.Simply love the TOTALLY ripping uncensored "Kick Out The
Jams....Mutha.......".
Vocalist Rob Tyner sounds like he's having the time of his life.
Also enjoyed the wailing guitar line on "Gold" and not to
mention their moving cover of Van Morrison's "I Can Only Give
You Everything". The final two songs are the best this CD has
to offer,"I Just Don't Know" and "Looking At You" are early
numbers the band played when they FIRST formed.Only down side
is that since Smith is gone and Tyner has passed on as well
means that there can never be a true MC 5 reunion. Great sound.

for a band that was outlawed , disbanded due to content censorship and had wayne kramer locked up,,, its difficult to
criticize them: needless to say ,some of their songs are tremendous, not the least kick out the jams,,,, they were expected to fit into a music industry that they were at odds with,,,, especially with the white power and chicago demonstration karma of 1968. still,,, great music,,,, kick out the jams is still my choice instead of this,but the change to atlantic from electra had its downside as well.... glad they are getting the recognition they so much deserve, rob tyner died some time back,,,, a great stage show and is often selected with iggy as the earliest and best of raw punk

I should have read the other reviews before I bought this. The song, Build Me Up Buttercup was okay, but the others were terrible. Too late I realized this was a remake with one of the Foundations singers, not the originals. A big mistake.

I've seen several other reviews/mentions where patrons note that the tracks on this CD aren't the original recordings.Not sure what they're talking about because these cuts seem to be the 'original' mixes than I,personally remember.Especially the first two,"Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Butter Cup".A couple of others that I thought were decent include "Lonely And Sad","You Can't Fool Me" and "No One Loves Me Like You Do".That's five good R&B laced soul goods out of ten.Not too bad.Line-up:Clem Curtis-vocals,Alan Warner-guitar,Pat Burke-sax,Eric Allen-trombone,Peter Macbeth-bass and Tim Harris-drums.For any young 'uns out there who might wish to purchase a copy for an elder,this artist might appeal to fans of Stylistics,Al Green,Chi-Lites and possibly Wilson Pickett.

When you think the deal is too good, it is. I bought this because it said it was the original artists. IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS. When I listened to it in the car I had to laugh. I later saw the small print on the back of the cd case that stated it was rerecorded in 1994. Wish I would have read the other reviews before making my purchase.
