Soulfully Live...is the way it should be done.......2004-10-18
CD 1 highlights tracks from Glenn's last studio album Songs in the Key of Rock. What's surprised me was, I thought his last album wasn't so good, but the tracks he performs here live sound so much better. You can't deny Glenn's soulful melodic voice on "Can't Stop the Flood". He's backed up by some cool meaty riffs. Dubrow & Ligertwood hit the stage for back up vocals on "Higher Places", although you can barely tell. There are some great twangy guitars here and a catchy sing-along chorus. Can't picture Dubrow doing stuff like this. With all the emotion put forward on "Written All Over Your Face", you'd swear that Glenn was a part of a R & B soul group back in the day. The extended instrumental breaks are just unbelievable. Keep an ear out for the keyboard tones on "Medusa", they will surely take you back to Hughes's seventies heyday.
CD 2 is a mish-mash of Hughes material from the past and present. Reaching back to the Hughes/Thrall days, "First Step of Love" is packed with plenty of eighties power rock and catchy melodies. Of course Hughes is well known for his days with Deep Purple, so he included two extended versions of a couple of his favorites. The 11+ minute version of "Mistreated" is loaded with classic guitar rhythms and solos, while the 10+ minute "Gettin' Tighter" displays more of the same with more accent on Glenn's vocal abilities and crowd interaction. There's even a DVD that chronicles the whole event that sure to please die-hard fans and casual fans alike.
Anything bad?
Nope.
Bottom Line
I'm always a bit stand-off-ish with 'live' albums, but Soulfully Live...is the way it should be done. The intimate setting makes for a better quality recording. Glenn is just on fire vocally, even improving upon some of his previously recorded hits. And for a band that doesn't play together on a regular basis, they sure sound like they've got their act together.

not a bad "live" CD, but..........2006-08-07
So, if you are looking for a "Live" with an "alive" feeling, this is not a good starter. However, the music here is not bad at all (specially if you're Glenn's fan). Here's my personal take on this CD (please note there's a DVD of the same concert, which is so awfully shot it's not probably worth a second thought, I know firsthand!).
Mr. Hughes opens it up on a very high note with "Can't stop the flood", a recent staple from his catalogue which makes up to an excellent opener. Then, the two highlights of the "Songs in the key of rock" CD, "Higher places" and "Written all over your place". Here, I began to wonder how could it be that the people there weren't rocking, shouting along or something. Maybe it was a zombie audience. These two are extremely hard-roking songs with a soul feeling that justifies the title of the CD alone. "Written..." is my personal favourite from Glenn in the last few years, and the version here is very good, slightly inferior in intensity to the studio version, but worth repeated listening anyway. Then, Mr. Hughes hits the "Trapeze" section of the concert, with energetic reprises of the classic "Medusa" and "Seafull", from the Medusa album, one of the most overlooked gems of the early 70s hard rock landscape. The versions here are updated arrangements-wise and sound like heavy Purple-esque songs with emphasis on Glenn's soulful yet soaring vocals. He intercalates one of the least interesting songs from the "Songs in the key of rock" CD, "Wherever you go", which is a bit of filler, specially amidst such an intense section.
The second CD leans on older material, mainly from his stint with Deep Purple and the Hughes/ Thrall project. The CD opens up with "Coast to Coast", an old song co-written with Tommy Bolin and recorded in the studio as part of the Hughes/ Thrall LP. There are live versions available in many other CDs, and there's nothing specially interesting about this one. "First step of love", which follows, is another song from the Hughes/ Thrall project, which comes as a surprise, since it's not usually part of his live repertoire. Since more than 20 years have passed, some of the lines of the song sound dated, but the band injects some fuel in it, saving it from being filler. The concert wraps up with two classic songs from the "Come taste the band" Deep Purple LP, "Getting tighter" and the last one, "You keep on moving". Glenn keeps the first one very alive with funky bass grooves and high-pitched antics, whereas "You keep on moving", with its sudden pace changes is a classic staple from his live show and doesn't disappoint. Between these two, he burns it up with (yet) another version of the classic DP song "Mistreated", from the "Burn" LP. His version is very different from that of Coverdale with Whitesnake, since he focuses more on the high range of the song and we lack some of the macho bluesiness DC injected in the song. However, it's one of the climaxes. The CD has a couple of non-LP songs that were left out of LP-length releases for good reasons. Nuff said, I almost never listen to them.
The band is inspired throughout the procedures (special mentions to Glenn's long-time guitar player JJ Marsh and friend drummer Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), but there's some lack of primal fire in this recording that doesn't allow it to stand out of the crowd. If you're a fan, go for it by any means, since there are some first-time-recorded live versions, but if you're just starting to discover Mr. Hughes' catalog, go for "Burning Japan Live", which is louder, stronger and more consistent, apart from delivering the definitive live versions of the aforementioned "Coast to Coast" and specially "You keep on moving".
Pretty good album...........2005-10-24
