John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21

product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Options: no subtitles or other options.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

See Yu

5 out of 5 stars John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

2 out of 5 stars Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

5 out of 5 stars Not What I'd Anticipated, But Still A Good Surprise!!!.......2006-07-29

My only exposure to Phantom Planet had been through their reissued "The Guest" album. I was instantly entranced by the lead singer's voice and the way he belted out songs like "Wishing Well" and, predictably, "California." So when I purchased this follow-up album, I expected more of the poppy and powerful music I had come to associate them with. Upon uploading this album onto my iPod, I was a bit put off by the departure from The Guest. Less belting, more complicated cord progressions, a more layered & harder sound overall. I wasn't sure if it would grow on me like their previous album, but after a few go-rounds, Phantom Planet's self-titled evolution has made itself a place in my most recently played songs. Give it a try, you'll like it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Ok. But not one of their best work........2006-04-17

Since i bought this album back in November 2004, i was so hooked up with the catchy songs inside this album especially The Happy Ending. But when i listened back for a few times, i don't see anything special about it. To me this album is just completely average. Go and buy their previous albums instead.

5 out of 5 stars Its good no matter what Planet you're on!.......2005-10-01

This album was the 1st of the bands material to reach my ears and I liked it immediately! As I listened more and more, I started to LOVE this album, every song is just SOLID... I just had to check out their other material. As I checked out their earlier stuff, I heard a pretty big difference from the new album. Although, I DO now like their older stuff, I am really glad that they took a "heavier" approach to their latest release... It has SO much more energy!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2005-09-04

The first two Phantom planet cds = great.
This cd = complete crap.
The fact that phantom planet were such a great band at one time makes this cd even worse.
Anyone who likes this should be draged out in the street and shot.
Maybe if no one buys this album Phantom Planet will go back to their pre sellout sound.

4 out of 5 stars great CD.......2005-06-28

I haven't been a fan of Phantom Planet very long, but I think this CD is great. It does sound a bit like the Strokes, but better. They're trying something different and I like it. This CD is great and any Planet fan should get it!

i liked their song california from the o.c. i plan on going to california one of these years.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-01-22

This CD was actually given to me from someone that had an abundance of CDs that were overflowing his case. I played it a couple of times and fell in love with it. I was living in Italy when I heard the song California, I always loved hearing it come on during the drunkin nights at the pool table. It was my 3-minute escape back to California.
Over the last couple of years I have made a transition from rap to alternative/rock, and CDs like this have helped me in doing so. I grew up listening to Northern California gangster rap and never had the influence of some good-listenin rock & roll. I listened to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but that was the extent of it.
This CD is perfect in many ways. How the style of the singer blends with the melodies of each song is brilliant. I sometimes forget that "California" is even on the CD. We all wish for a CD that is going to be laced with nothing but great tracks and this is one of them. Not a fan of the last track, and "Anthem" is a little corny but still has a great sound to it. If you buy this listen to it all the way through, every song completely. Some will start out like duds and one is quick to hit next as I was, but give them a chance, those are the ones that will really catch your approval from the melody of the hooks. I haven't heard any of their other CDs, and I honestly don't think they will compare to this album but they will still be worth a try.

3 out of 5 stars One Great Track.......2005-12-13

It boggles my mind to see how many versions of Guest are available. I finally found the right one to review. Anway, on with the review. Besides the teen summer anthem "California" which you get sick of quickly, the fun but too-short Beatles-sounding "Hey Girl," and the very good "Always On My Mind," the only suberb track on this album is Track seven: "Turn, Smile, Shift, Repeat." The words, singing, and electronic mixing are musical genius.

Tracks three, four, and five, "Lonely Day," "One Ray of Sunlight," and "Anthem" are ultra-Disneyfied. Listening to these tracks, you feel as if you accidentally ingested too much sugar. With all that is going on in the world today, and the harder-edged, alternative groups that are popular today, how did Phantom Planet come up with such Pollyana lyrics in these three tracks?

If you pop this CD into your PC, you can access the "Hey Girl" music video, "California" with commentary, and Phantom Planet's website.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-08-28

This is unbelievably good. Phantom Planet is awesome! This is one of their best albums, too. I love all the tracks on here. Some of there songs are so upbeat and fun, but some of them are slower. I mean, I love like Pink Floyd and the Ramones and Black Sabbath and stuff, but this album totally caught my ear. It is great! It varies my music also. Variation can be good!

4 out of 5 stars You gotta say ýWowý.......2004-07-07

You gotta say "Wow"

Wow, because I can't believe how many people think this is any good? I decided (because I was suspicious of my opinion) to wait for a few more cycles through the CD player before I wrote this. It's been over a month and probably ten complete cycles through... All I can say is:

Over-rated!

The singer is so over-the-top emotional on every track I'm exhausted by the third song. He needs to just relax a little bit, it's surely not life or death in pop music (is it?) I mean really, what is he 25 years old, for Gods sake, take a pill. The playing is tight and the band does nice stuff but it's also very "heard it before" for me, most of these songs, including the OC soundtrack "HIT" are kinda stereo typical of this genre today, radio rock. It's really not that good.

Try Rooney or Myracle Brah or Owsley, right here on Amazon, same Genre much better music...

Just my 2 cents:
I give it 4 stars because otherwise Amazon hides it in 3 days...

4 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2005-06-28

Great CD! I'm completely hooked on Phantom Planet now after hearing some of my friends talk about them. This CD is great for anyone who wants to get into some great indie rock. Buy it now, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Outta' This World.......2005-04-17

I bought the 'Phantom Planet/The Guest' combo-pak with some reservations. For starters, I had never heard any of their songs, i got it because it was a duel-disc album for $11 at Vintage Vinyl and I thought the cover art was cool. Now i'm someone who listens to any and everything that gets me going; country, rap, jazz, r&b, rock, trip hop you name it. I am someone whose addicted to music, so it's only fitting i become a musician. So, as a guy going to school studying music i have a certain appreciation for those who are able to make one great album, let alone two great albums. On the first disc it starts off with that kinda post-punk, new wave energy...be forwarned it is very loud, so if your one who plays their music in headphones...you may want to keep your hearing and have it at a reasonable listening level...i can't beleive i'm saying this i sound like my grandmother...anyway,Phantom Planet has become one of those bands i want to hear more from. On disc one they have a song i usually vibe and write my own lyrics to called "Mr.KnowItAll".
What i do is wait until the middle of the night when i can't sleep because my day kept me wired and listen to the album and write. And, everytime i write the album puts me in the mind of the movies. The concept, friends (all there own) who have a get together. Two make love, and the next day lay in bed hoping they didn't wake the other going to brush their teeth for that morning kiss. I'm saying you all have got to get this album. That may not be the albums concept, but it's definetly going to give you that...feeling to just...be. Congratulations Phantom Planet, you all have made something really beautiful here, and no matter what it meant while you were writing it, to me it's something i don't mind the rest of my friends and family clowning me for listening to "white music"...you guys gave me a rainbow in a puddle of water along the curb...and i really needed it cause my writing was suffering.
Now, i don't want people to go have all these expectations about this album. Because it meant something to me don't expect it for you, expect to enjoy a listening experience for you and you only...love Willie James.

5 out of 5 stars Something a little different than before..........2004-10-11

Phantom Planet's new cd "Phantom Planet" is not like their previous cds. "The Guest" and "Is missing" show a slower more mellow side and creates a very happy place. It takes catchy beats and infectious lyrics that get stuck in you head for days, taking on a much more pop image.

Now having "California" as the theme song for the popular show The O.C. Phantom Planet is getting much more attention than before with hits like "California", "Lonely Day", and "Anthem". With the new album, however, it takes a harder and edgier sound. Their first single "Big Brat" is something you'd never expect from them with sounds of more rock than on the other albums. Then again with the exit of drummer/ co-writer Jason Schwartsman, this new sound could have come from newer ideas from the rest of the band.

Songs like "The Happy Ending", "1st Things 1st", and "The Meantime" have a Strokes like feel to them. Alex Greenwald's voice seems to morph right into Julian Casablanca's voice on these tracks. While this might be a great thing for fans of The Strokes and other such fans of "The" bands, this is kind of a change for the fans of the first two albums. The best suggestion would be to buy the combo pack so you get a taste of the old with the "Reissue of The Guest" and a taste of the new "Phantom Planet" a little rock and a little pop.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad........2004-06-29

If CAKE and THE STROKES got together and had a baby in a garage, this would be that baby.

From the soft and stable John Meyorish songs of The Guest Album to the heartpumping garage thrashing songs of their self-titled release, these guys are "the new stuff."

I admit, california is a bit mainstream but it hooked me and led me to their real stuff. Good music for everyday normal people who enjoy relatable lyrics with catchy music and a sense of humor. It may not set them apart from everyday rock bands, but it is a job well done.

3 out of 5 stars Hey now, boys..........2004-03-19

Thanks to the popular "O.C." TV show, powerpop/alt-rock group Phantom Planet is getting more exposure than ever before, coinciding with the release of their latest album. Here debut album "The Guest" and the self-titled "Phantom Planet" are collected together... though you'd never think they were the same band.

"The Guest" is a collection of sunny, catchy powerpop. Hit single "California," Radiohead-like "Turn Smile Shift Repeat" and the plaintive "Wishing Well" are a few of the standouts in this album. But most of it is just the mind of a pensive adolescent male, with crushes, longings for faraway oases of fun, and overwrought emotions.

"Phantom Planet" is an entirely different kind of music: garage rock. Gone is the sunniness and fun: in its place is an edgier rock, grittier and faster and harder. The energetic "Big Brat," complicated "Knowitall" and "The Happy Ending" are among the best tracks, showing promise for the future. It has the sound of a band of New York cynics -- watch out, Phantom Planet is all grown up.

It's pretty clear that Phantom Planet has stepped away from its roots. The original pop shifts away in favor of Strokesian alt-rock. Even the vocals change from overwrought to flat (a bit of a Julian Casablancas thing). "Phantom Planet" is not bad, but (like "The Guest") neither is it amazing. Rather the self-titled album is just entertaining rock, as "Guest" is entertaining pop.

The "Phantom Planet/The Guest" combo pack is a good way to get into both sides of Phantom Planet, both rock and pop. A nice diversion.

1 out of 5 stars Just a bunch of pretty faces.......2004-03-03

Plain and simple: Phantom Planet is nothing more than a bunch of quasi-famous names thrown together. Their sound is faceless, anonymous pop-rock that accomplishes nothing. No innovation, no energy, no wit, no feeling, and no craftsmanship. It's void of pretty much everything.

There is one decent song: Recently Distressed. They actually throw a few surprises at you before going back to their painful middle-of-the-road performance. If Recently Distressed showed any signal of where Phantom Planet was headed, I might actually be interested.

But if their direction was based off of the other ten songs, I am not even remotely intrigued.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD I Have Ever Heard........2003-11-15

Phantom Planet truely captures what true music should be like. Passionate, inspired, and meaningful. Inspired by the Beatles and other classic bands, Phantom Planet makes this incredible album worth every cent. I urge you to buy this album, you won't regret it. The flowing, catchy songs will be stuck in your head all day.

5 out of 5 stars Redefining Awesome.......2003-01-28

... Phantom Planet is bringing back the true meaning of pop. This album is amazing. It is happy, upbeat and they rock it out hard. They are awesome on record and fourty times better live. Phantom Planet is an amazing band, both of their albums are amazing and if you do not have this cd, then buy it! Out with the crappy pop and in with the real pop.

5 out of 5 stars before i die of silence:.......2002-12-31

this cd is even GREATER than The Guest- its just an awesome CD- the sound is just amazing- i burned this cd a couple years ago and liked it but lost it- last march i bought the guest and remembered how much i loved this band so i bought the cd- it is one of the greatest cd's i've ever heard- the best songs are definitely "down on me","dying of silence", and "lisa (does it hurt you?)"- do whatever you can to get your hands on this cd- its worth it

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

Having Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake as your record producers is roughly the equivalent of having musical life insurance. In addition to the pair's outstanding work together in the Latin Playboys, Froom has produced Crowded House and Suzanne Vega, to name two, while Blake has mixed or engineered seminal groups from the BoDeans to the Bangles. That said, the danger in hooking up with such a studio-savvy pair is the sheer force of their dominance, and unless an artist has real vision, the star of the show will inevitably be the ensuing sonics, not the songs. While fledgling pop combo Phantom Planet write breezy, accessible, jangly, upbeat songs that only occasionally speak to darker themes (the mildly cynical "Turn Smile Shift Repeat" and wistful "One Ray of Sunlight"), The Guest feels maddeningly measured, as if every chiming guitar part were scripted and directed for maximum sheen. In other words, it's toothless. If a band can't stretch in the presence of Froom and Blake, when can they? --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-12-07

Personally, one of my favorite bands and favorite CDs. My friend recommended these guys to me, and I love them. This is probably their best album (IMO), but in general, these guys are great and unique. Just try the samples, or borrow someone's CD

I can't wait for their next album that comes out in 2007

5 out of 5 stars OMG BEST CD EVER!!!!.......2006-04-08

OMG BEST CD EVER????
Well actually I dont know whether the songs after the first track, (CALIFORNIA!!!!") are any good. I just downloaded the first song to my IPOD and OMG OMG OMG.... I am just over flowing with emotions when I hear it. It makes me think about the beach and all of my friends back home and more importantly about the greatest show ever!!!! The OC!!!! OMG, Have you seen this year's episodes? I just really hope that marissa and ryan get back together when they go to Berkely, and oh poor somers!! she is so heart broken because she thinks her boyfriend doesnt want to go to Brown University with her because he's fallen out of love! OMG!!! how sad!! Anyway.. Buy this CD and make sure you bump around with California!!!!!!! K laterz

5 out of 5 stars Received it as a gift for Christmas..........2006-02-14

...from a friend who'd accompany me to the beach every weekend. I listened to it with low expectations; I'd been knee-deep in prog-rock, listening to the Mars Volta, Tool, and other bands of the like (and I'm definitely not saying that if you like those bands, you'll like Phantom Planet). However, this CD brought me back to the days of old when music wasn't simply a concept, but created for the sole purpose of entertaining its audience, and those songs went way back to the days of the Eagles or even the Beatles.

Regarding the album, it's extremely listenable. I've found that by pretending that California wasn't played fifty kajillion times over the radio, it's still a great song. Some songs that stood out (not that I'm saying the other songs weren't as good, it's purely based on my own taste) were "Anthem", "Nobody's Fault", "Turn Smile Shift Repeat", and "Wishing Well". Some might say that "Anthem", "California", and "Wishing Well" all have the exact same formula, but hey, if it sounds good, then it works.

If you're still an avid supporter of indie and progressive rock that explores new frontiers of music, that's fine. However, don't let that attitude keep you from listening to a genuinely entertaining album.

And for a truly great experience, I recommend bringing it along to a beach trip; listening to it next to the bonfire and watching the sunset with your best friends or significant other generates fond memories (sorry for those not on the west coast, you're missing out!).

Rating: 4.5 (I rounded it up just because I'd like to see the overall rating become 4.5)

5 out of 5 stars Almost pure good pop!.......2006-01-10

Catchy pop tunes, but not overly produced. Many of the songs have enough lyrical substance for thinkers, but enough of a sound vibe to try to grab a mainstream audience. I heard "California" when I saw the video way before the O.C. existed. After hearing a sampling somewhere, I picked it up and enjyted tracks 2 - 9 even more. Lonely Day sounded like another hit, and it was released as a video. Always on my Mind is catchy. One Ray of Sunlight is a slow, melodic, song with manly croons placed in all the right places. Turn Smile Shift Repeat sounds like it could be a soft intellectual hit if some other songs made it as releases first. The lyrics of most of the songs really hit home for me, and for those few that don't they certainly are not terrible. Anthem and Darkest Hour are probably the hardest rocking songs, which aren't hard like heavy metal, but harder for variety. They still keep the flow of the CD though. Hey Now Girl and Nobody's Fault are similar to California. A must have for pop lovers abound!

4 out of 5 stars A good indie pop album with a couple flaws - it is, however, not entirely appealing for non-genre fans.......2006-01-06

Phantom Planet's "The Guest" is a good album with several good songs, but a couple things hurt its rating. The first would be the singer - he's not all that likable. He's not horrible, but most people won't really dig him. Secondly is that the album has several bad tracks on it which definitely hurt the flow of the album. Last is that it's kind of cheesy sounding - you'll most likely feel awkward playing this in front of your friends. Lyrically it's pretty much all about girls and relationships, but none of the songs are insightful or deep. Some of them are catchy ("Always On My Mind" and "California"), but they're also kind of forgettable. Musically this is definitely indie pop - it pretty much sounds like any other indie pop album you've ever heard. Sidenote: "California" , I believe, was a hit in the indie pop scene. The key to its 4-star rating is that it has numerous good indie pop songs. Non-genre fans probably won't like it, but indie pop fans might. All in all a good album which comes slightly recommended.

Highlights include:
"Always On My Mind"
"Lonely Day"
"Anthem"
"Turn Smile Shift Repeat" (kind of)
"Nobody's Fault" (kind of)
"All Over Again" (kind of)
"Something Is Wrong" (sort of)

I've only heard the track "California", first from watching the show "The O.C." and then heard it at my friend's house. Each time I hear the song it brings out these great and intense emotions like no other song really has. You can sort of picture yourself in the song as you listen to the lyrics, imagining the warm California breeze as you cruise down the 101. Melodic and amazing in general, California is a must for anyone to hear. I think it is a song that most anybody would like regardless of preferred genres.
