Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fine collection of 70s radio rock.......2003-06-24

This generous collection (clocking in at a disc-stuffing 76:55) is filled with the radio candy that kept ears glued to the dial throughout the 70s. It may very well represent the last great gasp of top-40 radio, wherein the experimental sounds of 60s FM progressive rock were strained through the pop sensibilities of the AM hit single machine. These twenty selections focus on the rock hits of the 70s, eschewing other movements like disco, teen pop, and singer/songwriters (some of which are covered on other volumes of this series).

From Boston's intricately layered "More Than a Feeling" to Lynyrd Skynyrd's anthemic "Sweet Home Alabama," the electric guitar was rock radio's focal point, with outsized riffs (courtesy of Mick Ralphs, Paul Kossoff, Steve Miller, Carlos Santana, and Duane Allman, among others) topped by swaggering vocals from the likes of Paul Rodgers (Bad Company and Free) and Lou Gramm (Foreigner). The result filled arenas and summer days-on-the-green around the world.

Even acoustic numbers like Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and novelties like Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" resound with the era's allegiance to the overboard. Covers by Santana ("Black Magic Woman," originally waxed by Fleetwood Mac) and Nazareth ("Love Hurts," originally a hit for the Everly Brothers) became amped-up icons that buried the earlier incarnations for many listeners.

Though twenty tracks barely scratches the surface -- even in this relatively narrow swath of 70s hit music -- this is a solid hour-plus of party music that's sure to revive a few memories. It's like listening to your favorite Classic Rock station without the commercials!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you've got a broad musical taste, you will like it!.......2004-01-07

This CD has a little bit of everything from Disco type sound ("If you let me stay") to Jazz ("How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?") with some good "Oldies" ("Respect", "What A Fool Believes", and "Come Together", which is performed by Aerosmith) "Heart of Rock 'N Roll" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" are some great Rock songs, and pop is represented well with "Vision of Love", "Save the Best For Last", "Constant Craving", "One Moment in Time", and "Tears in Heaven".

I HATED the way that Clapton performed "Tears in Heaven" on this CD. I love that song, but he did something horrible to it and it sounds terrible. That is my one and only complaint about the CD. Overall a good collection and one that I will play for a long time.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2000-05-29

For what it is, this cd isn't a bad collection. As it features good performances from (duh) Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, etc. However, it also features some subpar songs and artists. So, overall, although it's nice for what it is, it's not something worth owning.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Under Nipper's Doghouse Roof, A Varied Series of 70s Hits.......2000-03-14

Major label artist collections are among the most fun because they present many different styles under an era's umbrella. This is particularly true of RCA Records in the 1970s. For the first time in the modern era, RCA had to do with little from its most reliable hitmakers (Como, Presley, etc.) They relied instead on younger stars like John Denver and David Bowie, plus a host of one-hit wonders.

Sadly, neither Bowie nor Denver made the cut here but several of the label's finest and quirkiest hits did. You get refined Philly soul/disco (Tymes, Hall & Oates' #1, Vicki Sue Robinson, Evelyn King's 1978 disco anthem "Shame") beside country/rock (B.W. Stevenson, Dolly Parton's 1977 breakthrough, Jerry Reed's Cajun rave-up "Amos Moses"). Two lounge-lizard standards ("Feelings" and 1970's "It's Impossible" )rub up against two of the era's goofiest novelty songs (Jimmy Castor's churning "Troglodyte" and Reunion's 1974 bubblegum rap "Life Is A Rock.") The power ballad debuts with Styx's "Lady" and Jefferson Starship's 1975 "Miracles" (fully heard here, as opposed to its abbreviated version on "Gold.") And of course, Elvis exits with his final Top 10, 1972's #2 "Burning Love."

"Nipper's Greatest Hits: The 70s" is as quirky, intriguing and outright odd as the decade. Like Rhino's subsequent "Have A Nice Day" collections, the songs leave you humming, reminiscing, and wondering how half these songs became hits to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of music for the money!.......1998-10-30

All hits are original. Very important to the serious oldies listener. Only a couple of "hits" were not really chart toppers, but still well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Elusive Hits.......1998-06-19

While it's odd seeing The Guess Who's "American Woman" on the same CD as Perry Como's "It's Impossible," the songs collected here are all 70s RCA pop hits in their original forms by the original artists. Many of these hits can be found separately on other collections, but where else can you find "Cherchez La Femme" by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey? With reverent liner notes and an eclectic mix of pop charters, this disc is a quirky but worthwhile addition to anyone's CD library.

4 out of 5 stars Why they call it Classic Rock.......2007-01-11

70s GREATEST HITS: HEAVY HITTERS Vol. 2 is a terrific various artist set of rock that spans the years 1968-77, with particular emphasis on the early 70s. Audio quality on all of these classic recordings is superb. The longest track here, "The Court Of The Crimson King," clocks in at 9:26, and is the complete work. "Free Bird," on the other hand, is shortened by a few minutes-- thus the 4 star rating for the CD.

          1 out of 5 stars Wait a minute think.......2005-11-16

This music is absolutely terrible. No offence GodBless you, but the Beatles are far better and do good quality music that is just simply music.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good collection.......2004-11-07

This collection has many of the best Sabbath songs. A glaring problem is that 'Children of the Grave' is missing. It is one of Sabbath's absolute best songs ever. Without that song, the collection isn't really greatest hits

4 out of 5 stars One of countless compilations. But unique front cover........2004-04-30

Bands that have been around for decades invariably end up having countless "Greatest Hits" compilations, typically put out without the band's knowledge and even different labels. Such releases are "unofficial", and Black Sabbath has no shortage of them. This particular "Greatest Hits" compilation is just one of many odd and unofficial Black Sabbath releases from Holland. Clocking in at under an hour, the track list is as follows:

          1. Paranoid
          2. N.I.B.
          3. Changes
          4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
          5. Iron Man
          6. Black Sabbath
          7. War Pigs
          8. Laguna Sunrise
          9. Tomorrow's Dream
          10. Sweet Leaf

The songs here span their first 5 albums: "N.I.B" and the title track from the self-titled debut, the 3 popular songs ("War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Iron Man") from the second album, "Sweet Leaf" from the third album, "Tomorrow's Dream" and the two ballads ("Changes", "Laguna Sunrise") from their fourth album, and finally the title track from their 5th album "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". All of these appeared on the longer "We Sold Our Souls For Rock N' Roll" compilation, which was in fact the ONLY officially released Black Sabbath compilation for over 20 years.

One thing that is indeed curious about this "Greatest Hits" compilation is the front cover. It's a portion of a painting called "El triunfo de la muerte" or "The triumph of Death". It was painted by Jan "Velvet" Brueghel (1568-1625), sometimes credited as El Viejo Brueghel. A comparison of the album cover with the painting will also show that the cover was printed backwards!

The songs on "Greatest Hits" are excellent picks, and the price of this disc is usually really cheap. The cover alone makes it one of the more memorable Black Sabbath oddities. But if you only plan on making one purchase of Black Sabbath's "old" music, I'd recommend the official and newly remastered "Symptom of the Universe" double CD set.

          4 out of 5 stars A good compilation.......2003-10-01

One of the greatest rock bands in history is, without doubt, Black Sabbath. Many people have called these guys the original heavy metal band, and their music is nothing short of excellent. Recently, this compilation of the original line-up's biggest hits arrived in stores. Read on for my review of the compilation.

          PROS:
-If you're the casual Sabbath fan and you don't want to shell out the extra cash for the dual-disc Symptom Of The Universe compilation, this is an excellent altrnative. All the big hits are here.
-It's easy to find in stores
          -It's affordable

          CONS:
-Let's face the facts - as good as these songs are, a single disc of Sabbath could never be enough
-Way too much focus on the early stuff, not enough on the band's latter years with Ozzy
-It only features classic line-up stuff, so there's no RJD-era material here.

          OVERALL:
Despite my complaints, this is an excellent compilation if you're a casual, budget-minded fan of Black Sabbath. Though not perfect, it's an excellent introduction to the rock legends.
