4 out of 5 stars Introducing a great bloke who happens to be a UK Idol.......2005-02-05

I got my first introduction to Gareth when I happened to hear the excellent single "Say It Isn't So". The timing was perfect because my best friend was leaving the country, so we played it to death.

The rest of the album is a combination of ballads, some R&B and funky pop, with a couple of funny ones, such as the highly spirited version of "Spirit in the Sky".

Sure, most of the album is your standard pop fare, but it's extremely listenable pop fare, with some good beats. At worst, he sometimes comes off like a Justin Timberlake sound-alike, especially on "Groove With Me", "Club Hoppin'" and "Enough of Me"

"Absolutely" has an old-time funk feel, and "All Cried Out" isn't the Lisa Lisa song, but instead samples "Human" by the Human League.

"Skeletons" and "It Happens Every Time" sound like tracks from a Savage Garden album, meaning that I like those too. "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (not the Starship song) and "Lies" are my other picks.

If you're into idols, take a hop over the pond and try this one.

DON'T waste your time on this herendous crap!!!! don't buy his first either. nothing is useful on this cd apart from the absolutely stunning 'absolutely'. the rest is rubbish. ooow my ears hurt. guide:-

    Good songs: 1/19
    Bad songs: 18/19
    Best: shown above
    Worst: foolish (by far)

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-07-15

I can't name a track on this album I don't love!! Gareth should be super proud of his work. Although I do think that overall my favourite song is "All Cried Out." It's absolutely AMAZING!!! I like how there are 2 CD's and that each has a flavour all its own. You can enjoy it all the way through, and over and over again. The first CD (Night) is more dance pop music so it's a bit funkier. The second CD (Day) is more ballads but there are some more up tempo songs on it too.

    5 out of 5 stars HONESTLY ADDICTIVE!.......2004-03-10

To tell u the truth, i know gareth since he won 2nd place in debut idol series. but i just realise his full potential and vocal charismatic when only his 2nd album was release. his voice is somewhat a blend between a better version of george micheal and jacko. i hate those 2 but i should give gareth and exception. he made every song alive with his voice. Go your own way(GYOW) is a great pop album.mosty ballad and dance. either ballad or up beat song. gareth shines every track, sound so addictive almost dripping like honey.

Sunshines - R&B pop track, at first listen sound usual, but as every listen it haunt u back for more replay. my fav!

absolutely - funky groove pop, sexy vocal exageration. funky.

all cried out - i like dis song cuz of gareth accent. british with an r&b pop twist.it has sample of 'human'. my fav!

enough of me - funky groove rnb pop, sexy ooh and ahh...bluesy track with some simple guitar riff. sexy.

foolish - funky dance tune - sound like elvislike song. i loves his accent on this song. cause he sing almost rapping. catchy. my fav!

freak my baby - pop rnb tune, couldve been mistaken by micheal jackson song. i like the chorus. cute vocal.

go your own way - rnb song, it grows on u and make u wanna listen again and again. my fav!

groove with me - cute sexy groovy song. girl would buy on dis one. sexy.

it happens everytime - everytime i listen to dis song, i imagine it would be good for disney soundtrack.ya know.it has some magical sound in it.lol.cute pop.singing along.my fav!

just say yes - groovy rnb song. didnt like dis song that much. just the song. they shouldve pick another song to replace on dis one.

listen to my heart - ballad. hmm...as usual.gareth voice alone will make u like dis song.

say it isnt so - a great single. i personally like dis song cause the lyric has meaning in my life*sob*sob...this song was the key reason why i like gareth, was sad, watchin mtv, then the video came out at the right time. then there was the duet with siti on mtvasia. hope they release it as bonus in next album maybe.my fav!!

spirit in the sky - cute song. the indian sound added some variety to his songs in this album. a cute song. my fav!

all in all, dis album is worth to buy. gareth voice has potential to be the next robbie william. amazing voice from a guy who is a stammer.god bless him!

5 out of 5 stars Gareth Gates Rocks.......2007-07-06

It's easy to see why Gareth Gates won Pop Idol. He's got a refreshing voice has a great story overcoming stuttering. After seeing him on an episode of Graham Norton I like him even more.

5 out of 5 stars A Song to Fit Any Mood You're In.......2005-03-31

What is there to say about Gareth other than he's got it all, a beautiful voice, talent (many of the songs on the Night CD are written by him), charisma, and the image of a pop star. This album is exactly what any popular music lover would want, it's got romantic ballads like Listen to my Heart and Say It Isn't So; and upbeat dance songs like Freak My Baby, Club Hoppin', and Sunshine. Anyone who is a fan of Justin Timberlake, I bet you will like upbeat songs on the album. However, my personal favorite is All Cried Out. I think the strength of this album is definately the variety, there are songs about serious issues, while there are songs that are fun and upbeat. This album has songs that cover almost every emotion you can feel, which makes it easy to relate to the songs and play the song that best fits your mood. With songs like that JT better what out, because Gareth could be the next "Big Thing" to hit North America.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all types of listeners.......2004-04-06

I was introduced to Will Young, the winner of England's pop idol, and finding information about him lead me to discover his runner-up, Gareth Gates. All I can say is that I think the judges must have had a hard time chosing between the two.

Gareth's double disc CD offers a wide range of songs for all tastes. The first CD, entitled Night, is mostly dance type music. While not a huge fan of this genre, I must admit Gareth's vocals were great, and I found myself moving to the music quite a bit.

The second CD is entitled Day, and this is the one that offers more of the pop standard. It was this CD that blew me away with his songs and vocal range. They all showcase his talent and his version of Unchained Melody is perfect. It's not an easy song for anyone to pull off, and Gareth does it flawlessly. I think I like it better than the original. Also, his song, Spirit inthe Sky performed with The Kumars, is totally fun and you can't help but smile.

This collection from Gareth is definitely worth owning, and it's better to hear real Pop Idols sing rather than the mediocre American Idols that are present during this 3rd round of the show. England surely has its share of talent, and it's worth hearing.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

3 out of 5 stars Good Songs - Only Two of Them.......2006-11-04

I enjoyed the songs, but I didn't realize there were only two songs on the CD. I didn't pay more than just a few dollars, so the value is very good. I guess I just wasn't very clear on the fact it's more like a single. I'll have to read better next time. Overall, I think I still would have purchased the CD even if I did realize it had just the two songs.

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful re-interpretation of the 1977 classic..........2004-10-22

I never buy CD singles, but I'm glad I bought this one. Thankfully, Wilson Phillips decided not to emulate Fleetwood Mac's 1977 classic...instead, they came up with their own heartfelt, melancholy rendition of "Go Your Own Way". The slower tempo (albeit with a nearly identical running time) works remarkably well and it reveals the more intimate possibilities of this song.

I'd give this five stars if it weren't for the lackluster rendition of "Already Gone". This renditions sounds too much like the original and offers nothing new.

    1 out of 5 stars In a word...Awful!.......2004-07-15

Hardcore Fleetwood Mac fans better stay away from this one! The only good thing I can say about this remake is that it is definitely not anything like the awesome original hit. It was painful listening to these ladies sing this entire, slow, boring, uninvolved song. Sorry Wilson Phillips, I hope there are better songs on your new release to help you get back on the comeback track!

    5 out of 5 stars WENDY.CHYNNA.CARNIE.......2004-07-04

Well this ladies had it goin on again, although many people has stated that they don't understand this version of GO YOUR OWN WAY, I could, This clever ladies, said!, well if were gonna make a acover of Fleetwood Mac, well, to not disrespect the original, let's do a completely different version, and they did, a version were the tracks are slow and with a lot of harmony. For me they have in their hands a really deep version not in a point of comparison with the original, but this is so delightful to hear....it's really heartbreakin', Carnie, Chynna and Wendy are heading to a great album, but with the slow infution RADIO has given to this track, let's hope SONY don't give up on this project and promote a second single cos there's a lot of material in CALIFORNIA, this track it's superb!

3 out of 5 stars Gone Another Way.......2004-06-05

Sometimes, comebacks really don't seem to be all that they are cracked up to be. When I heard that Wilson Phillips was going to reunite, I really was excited. Unfortunately, when I heard the comeback song, it just really didn't get to me. The remake of Fleetwood Mac's legendary hit, Go Your Own Way, is a very much simple version of the song, that seems more like it is stripped down the way Stevie Nicks and company would perform it. This version of the 70's song really doesn't have what I thought of it, to make it a suggestive single. Although Wendy, Carnie & Chyna do have great taste in songs, it is a mixed bag here. Otherwise, try going back to Fleetwood Mac's version, for longtime fans here.

Despite racking up Tony nominations and/or box-office success with Nine, Grand Hotel, and Titanic, Maury Yeston remains a relatively unknown Broadway auteur. And yet, what a fabulous songwriter he is. Listen to "Home," for instance: This excerpt from Phantom (the other adaptation of Phantom of the Opera) has great melodic hooks, along with natural sweep and unrestrained emotion. Like every song on this CD, it also has such dramatic drive that it easily stands on its own outside of its regular narrative frame. This collection of new recordings provides an excellent overview of Yeston's talent, juxtaposing numbers from his three best-known scores (though there's only one from Titanic) with rarities and a generous selection from his 1991 song cycle December Songs. Christine Ebersole, Liz Callaway, and Betty Buckley turn in expectedly strong performances, but watch also for Laura Benanti (the star of the 2003 revival of Nine), Christine Andreas, and Foster Sutton, who completely make the material theirs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

How could one put together a Maury Yeston Songbook cd without a track from Andrea Marcovicci? He wrote a song cycle for her. Granted there are some great singers here but a grave oversight to not include Ms Marcovicci.

Maury Yeston may be musical theatre's unsung genius to the public at large, but I've heard his praises sung many times. A friend convinced me to buy the original Broadway cast of "Nine", and while there were some fantastic songs and an undeniable melodic gift throughout, it left me lukewarm. The same with "Grand Hotel". And I couldn't stand "Titanic" - too big, too self-important, too reliant on booming low brass and bombastic orchestral swells.

"Phantom" was the only one of his scores that touched something other than distanced admiration in me. It was everything Sir Lloyd Webber's popera travesty could never quite aspire to - epic yet human, beautiful and touching, with songs that showed actual details and emotions. So it was with that in mind that I purchased this, figuring that maybe Maury could prove me wrong, shorn from the restrictions of a book musical format.

And by God, did he prove me right and then some.

Maybe it's the singers. Maybe it's the perfect orchestrations. Maybe it's just the absence of a plot to follow. More than likely, it's all three, but this is one of the most gorgeous, enjoyable, heartbreaking albums I've ever purchased. Yeston has assembled an impressive cast to give voice to his music - such heavy Broadway hitters as Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Betty Buckley, Christine Ebersole and Howard McGillin mix with up-and-comers like Eden Espinosa, Sutton Foster, and Brian d'Arcy James. But the most impressive turns are given by people I'd never heard of before - Johnny Rodgers (who?) has a voice spun from gold, and he's absolutely perfect in "Danglin'", a simple and powerful song despite some odd lyric choices by Yeston. Likewise Philip Chaffin in "My True Love" and "I Am Longing", and Michael Holland displays a warm and untrained performance of "Another Day in the Modern World". These three men, who I'd never heard of before, absolutely stole the show. It doesn't hurt that they're given some of the best songs from the album.

Of course, the rest of the ensemble uniformly turns in worthwhile performances. The professionalism of Broadway is gloriously evident here, each singer making their song uniquely theirs. Brent Barrett made me hear "Only With You" as if for the first time. Betty Buckley is surprisingly vulnerable in "I Had A Dream About You". Alice Ripley is her usual bundle of raw emotion in "Please Let's Not Even Say Hello", and turns in a rare comic performance in "Call From The Vatican" to great effect (listen to that surprise high note near the end! Wow, Alice!). Christine Ebersole is heartbroken, elated, vulnerable, and tough all in the course of "Grandmother's Love Letters"' 4 minutes.

There are some weak spots - Eden Espinosa is mostly one-note during her song, and while it's certainly a high note, it's nothing you haven't heard her do better elsewhere. Laura Benanti's "Now and Then" goes by without much notice, which is a shame for this talented actress. And Betty Buckley goes back to her usual high-volume stridence in "Be On Your Own", which despite its chilling music deserves a more nuanced performance than Buckley gives here. But these songs would be standouts on any other album, and it's only the company they keep that prevent them from being excellent.

Oh, and "Unusual Way", possibly Yeston's best-known song, is so beautifully performed here by Brian d'Arcy James and a three-piece band that I nearly cried hearing it. And that's quite a feat for a song that I swore never to listen to again after the seventeenth girl in a day auditioned with it (badly). But the gender swap works perfectly, and d'Arcy James' golden Irish tenor swings through the music effortlessly.

As for the band - there are no missteps here. Each song is given exactly what it needs, from the Romantic-with-a-capital-R string section on "Home", to the jazzy saxophone on "Letter From the Vatican", to "Be On Your Own", which is given a Herrmann-esque string section. Some particular touches stand out - that lovely acoustic guitar on "Danglin'", the simple piano line on "Modern World", and the sublime cello/piano outro in "Unusual Way" really stuck with me after the album stopped playing. And the recording is without fault - crisp, encompassing, personable and expansive as the mood requires. The whole album sounds fantastic.

There is such a wide range of style and substance here that each song would deserve purchasing individually. As a collection? It's bliss. If you're a fan of theater music, appreciate great vocals, or just need something to keep you company on long nights, this is required purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect marriage of music and lyrics.......2006-09-07

I think Yeston must be the most underrated talent in music theatre. And not just music theatre ... for as far as I know, "Danglin'" is not from a show - a jewel of a song ... and a disarmingly honest rendition from Johnny Rogers (what a beautiful voice! Why hasn't he made more CD's?) Some other favourites are "New Words" (not enough parent-child love songs out there ... and I can't imagine it could be sung any better than this), "You're there too" (with a charming and unexpected twist), "Simple" (Callaway is superb), "Only With You" (loveable rogue!) ... to name but a few. Inspired music theatre writing. A must for any musical buff, composer or singer seeking repertoire that will help them stand out from the crowd.

A good album sung by good singers. I have been an admirer of Maury Yeston for a number of years . I am a great fan of "Nine"
which I consider his best work.(If possible try to listen to the
Australian Cast Recording with John Diedrich) I enjoy listening to artists like Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Sutton Foster, and my very favourite singer Liz Callaway. All in all a great CD to just sit back ,relax and enjoy Les Breen

5 out of 5 stars One of the best broadway/composer compilations ever made!.......2006-06-29

There are so many brilliant performances on this CD that I don't even know where to begin. From start to finish, this CD sweeps you away on a rollercoaster of emotions. Now, this CD isn't perfect by any means; a few of the artists are performing songs that aren't really suited to their abilities, but the heart is there and that's really all that matters in the end.

If you love Broadway, if you love GOOD music in general, and you want to be moved by songs rather than merely entertained, you must get this CD.
