A singing duo of Amanda Barrett on mandolin and dulcimer, and Abby DeWald on guitar, this is the second release by The Ditty Bops. They draw liberally on genres of yore, hopping from western swing to vaudevillian theatrics, jazz, and folk music. They mine a vein similar to what Dan Hicks was doing with his Hot Licks in the early seventies, though their compositional sensibilities embrace a wider realm. Sympathetically produced by Mitchell Froom (who also plays keyboards, though the dazzling turn at the piano on "Aluminum Can" is by Greg Rutledge), they're joined by some of the finest players to be found in Los Angeles, including the ever-apt percussion of Elvis Costello's longtime drummer, Pete Thomas. While the title song opens the set on a quaint note, by the third number, "Fall Awake," it becomes clear that The Ditty Bops are not to be pigeonholed. The set's one cover, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's "Bye Bye Love," is sweet but breaks the parade of their own resonant and mysterious songs. --David Greenberger

Album Description

"Combining a magical attic's worth of dusty musical idioms, iridescent golden harmonies and a quirky lyrical worldview, The Ditty Bops provide a refreshing antidote to the misbegotten, soul-grinding notion of thinking you know what happens next.... Abby DeWald (guitar) and Amanda Barrett (mandolin/dulcimer) embody the simple Saturday afternoon pleasures—of thrift store finds and getting lost in the library—with their amalgam of ragtime, jazz, vaudeville, Western swing and folk, but it would sell the Bops short to lump them in with nostalgia-driven absolutists." (Austin Chronicle) The Ditty Bops are different, way different, and that makes the singing-songwriting-playing duo of Amanda Barrett and Abby DeWald special. On their second album, Moon Over The Freeway, co-produced by Mitchell Froom (Suzanne Vega, Crowded House, Elvis Costello) as was their 2004 self-titled debut, The Ditty Bops are strangely, wonderfully captivating.

5 out of 5 stars just as good as the other one!.......2007-07-19

I don't understand how these ladies aren't on the radio?!?
They are so talented and the songs on this disk really help when I have a situation i need to laugh at... or if i just need to gain a little perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Great album........2007-07-12

Although it doesn't compare to seeing them live, this is still an amazing album. Maybe it's not quite as good as their first, but it's pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have!.......2007-05-23

I first saw the Ditty Bops on LOGO and fell in love with them. Even after listening to my favorite song of theirs I still don't think my head's too big. I love their humor but most of all their music. Check them out. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars over the moon..........2007-04-22

i can't believe i never got around to reviewing this album a year ago when it first came out. i saw the ditty bops open for nickel creek at the johnny mercer theatre in savannah, georgia and i bought their debut cd right on the spot. on the way home, i was utterly flabbergasted at how gorgeous their voices sounded coming through my car speakers. words fail me, but suffice to say that i was thrilled to realize that their second cd would be out within the month. i was also a little worried that maybe the dreaded sophomore slump would rear its ugly head...but the ditty bops more than beat that particular curse.

MOON OVER THE FREEWAY is every bit as amazing as the first cd and over the last year i have purchased and given away over a dozen copies of each to various friends (i did the same thing with BRIAN WILSON PRESENTS "SMILE" awhile back). listening to their wonderfully inventive harmonies and instrumentation is a cure for ANY case of the blues (or the blahs). anyone who thinks this album is lacking in comparison to the first is just deluded. i guess it's like people who claim that RUBBER SOUL was vastly superior to REVOLVER (they are both amazing albums, sillies).

do yourself a favor and buy two copies of the Ditty Bops cds. keep a set for yourself and give a set to someone you truly love.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Based on Freeway's introduction to the rap world (a verse on "1-900-Hustler" from Jay-Z's The Dynasty, where he provides a tutorial on how to deal drugs effectively), it's a challenge not to think that he's just another in a long line of "devout" MCs who debauch with the best of them. But few of the others rap with the same sense of urgency or have such a distinctively mesmerizing yet whiny vocal drone. On "Free," Freeway reminds us why we endured a full year of delays before this debut hit the streets, flipping schizophrenic flows over a pounding Just Blaze beat and an even catchier female vocal sample. You may love his off-kilter flow or you may hate it (think Ol' Dirty Bastard), but you can't deny that Freeway has rhyme skills, especially on burners like "What We Do," his shady street-life redemption opus featuring thug adviser Beanie Sigel. His storytelling capabilities arguably rival that of his mentor Jay-Z on "Life," an open letter to a neighborhood homey who's doing a lifetime bid. However, this Philly MC's fixation on tales of dope peddling, prison, or street life may make it a bit too hustle-centric for some. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Just Blaze laced em, Ye did too, Philadelphia Freeway classic, shuda went triple!!!.......2006-08-15

this is a str8 classic, all the tracks can bump none to be skipped. the songs i feel are 10/10 are free, what we do, you dont know, victim of the ghetto, life, line em up, hear this song, full effect, all my life. that leaves not many left. so classic!

2 out of 5 stars not all dat.......2006-07-02

I can't stand this whinin a** n****. This dude has the most annoyin voice I could think of right now in hip hop. The features is what keeps this album from bein a total dud. I don't recommend this to anyone. I say just download what we do.

4 out of 5 stars Freeway has his own unique style.......2006-04-29

Freeway are a typical MC for the streets. He has credibility in order, and has managed to found his own, unique style. His energetic and unorthodox flow might act overwhelming, but when you get used to it, it's straight fire. Freeway doesn't give a d**m about structure, and everything doesn't even rhyme, but still is sounds amazingly tight. Free only need the right beat, and for that, Roca-A-Fella is ideally a great starting point. Just Blaze' production fits him perfect, and Blaze did 10 joints on Philadelphia Freeway. Besides that Kanye West and Bink did two beats each, while Black Key and Ruggedness contributed with one beat each. There's nothing to complain about the production. Just Blaze both impresses and disappoints. "On My Own", which features Nelly, might be the most boring Blaze beat ever. Luckily his other contributions stands in another league. Songs like "What We Do" and "We Get Around" gets stuck in your head, and "Flipside" featuring Peedi Crakk, is just plain crazy. I've heard the song again and again and still wont get sick of it.

There's too many good songs here, to mention each and every. There's also too many guests to name them all. Of course Jay-Z and State Property are featured, but Freeway stands on his own. Philadelphia Freeway was a very mature debut. It's a lot a sad ghettostories here, but also a club banger here and there. What fits Free best, I really don't know. Maybe next time he should exert his energetic flow even more and gamble more to get his own identity. Buy it if you slept on it.

4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Debut.......2006-02-25

This cd is not all that bad but it is also not that good. Freeway is kinda hard to listen to because he is not that great. He has a decent sound to him and he spits nice lyrics but his style is not very unique and it gets boring. Thank God this album has great featured artists like Nate Dogg & Snoop Dogg. The truth is this album is only good for the first 6 songs and the track Full Effect. After "We Get Around"... id reccommend turning it off because this where his style gets old. It is decent and if you find it used... pick it up, otherwise focus on better albums before investing in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Bliss.......2007-01-14

In the span of just a couple weeks, I've gone from complete ignorance of this band to checking out every one of their records from my local library and listening compulsively. And that's saying something because if you know anything about Grandaddy, you're probably aware that it takes patience and repeated listening to acquire a taste for this band. I've listened to all except `Sumday', but I'm assured that it's just as awesome as the rest of their other albums. Every record of Grandaddy has several infectious tunes, but this album in particular is one that I keep coming back to. It may not be as cohesive or thematic as `The Sophtware Slump' but the blips and bleeps in combination with relentless drums and overwhelming guitar work have really hit home with me. It's strange that although this is their first release, there is ominous feeling of nostalgia, despair, and resignation that runs throughout the recording, as is evident in the song `Everything Beautiful is Far Away'. But there is balance as well, after listening to the hypnotizing `Collective Dreamwish...' which contrasts this feeling with defiance. This song conveys an exhausted feeling of contentment singer Jason Lytle feels while just playing his guitar, drinking beer and counting stars all alone out in the countryside. I agree with another reviewer in that this record really does near perfection. As long as one can get used to the myriad of electronic effects the band so subtly and craftily uses, this album won't grow old. Grandaddy has not made a recording that isn't lacking; all are extremely solid. Pure bliss, this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sci Fi country lullabies.......2006-01-13

Picked up the mantle that Pavement dropped circa Wowee Zowee without sounding too much like Pavement... Grandaddy really had something good with this album and Sophtware Slump. The songs are simple but not boring. Their lo-fi sound and Jason Lytle's fragile voice makes for a perfect combination and the resulting tracks sound very sad and distant while still rocking along in most cases. This album feels very much about place and it's an enjoyable experience to step into Grandaddy's world for a little while.

5 out of 5 stars Is there more perfect music out there?.......2005-12-26

Honestly, tell me cause I love this stuff. These guys managed to dodge so much crap in the music industry and stay on top of their game from album to album. But this. Truly their finest work. It's absolutely remarkable. "Summer Here Kids", "Everything Beautiful is Far Away", "AM 180" are all jams that I could not live without hearing from time to time, it's a timeless piece of music that is about joy and happiness coming out of your radio.
More importantly it's absolutely gorgeous songwriting intertwining over and over again, over this wall of music you can't escape cause the sounds are so familiar and exist somewhere between a computer and guitar. It's the transformation from a folk to more sonic sound and it's almost like Grandaddy is singing merrily the whole way there.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still worth it.......2005-11-10

Under the Western Freeway makes me think of playing Mario Brothers on an acid trip. It's saturated Nintendo-esque sounds are defintaley interesting...though maybe a little overused. Less catchy than Sophtware and Sumday, which could be a good or bad thing. However, if you are a Grandaddy fan, I definatley suggest adding this to your collection.

Freeway's 2003 debut "Philadelphia Freeway" was a heavily anticipated solo release from the Roc-A-Fella Records and State Property member. From the moment I first heard Freeway on Jay-Z's "1-900-Hustler" and later on State Property's awesome single "Rock the Mic," I could tell Freeway was a special rapper. First off, you'll notice his very unique delivery, a high-pitched yell that you could compare to M.O.P., but more soulful. He has a true presence on the microphone, and when he raps you can't stop listening, which makes him so great on posse cuts. "Philadelphia Freeway" takes advantage of his strengths, putting guests on almost every track and giving it more of a group effort vibe. However, the spotlight never leaves Freeway, and his passionate lyrics always take the forefront. Freeway raps about the trials and tribulations of a low class hustler and the life he lived growing up in Philadelphia. But what makes his stories and raps interesting is the mindset he delivers them in. He's a devout Muslim and has a very strict set of values, so when he tells of crime and hustling, he does so in an almost sorry tone that makes it much more interesting. Unlike on most of the Roc-A-Fella albums, where the guest appearances are limited to those in the ROC family, "Philadelphia Freeway" has a guest list that seems like a who's who of hip hop. The star power is pretty impressive.

Some credit for this album's greatness must also go to the production. Freeway was blessed with beats with some of the best in the business for his debut. Just Blaze produced nine of the sixteen tracks, and his songs are cleverly arranged bangers with great instrumentation. A then widely unknown Kanye West also contributes. Overall the production is awesome, and in some points even carries the album. As to be expected for a debut, "Philadelphia Freeway" isn't perfect, and there are some weaker spots where a collaboration doesn't quite work or the verses get redundant. But overall, I find this debut really impressive, and I highly recommend it.

The album opens with the soaring female vocals of "Free," a clever and thoughtful introductory track. The first single, a great Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel collaboration called "What We Do" is a good gauge of the album as a whole. The rappers talk about the crazy and crime-ridden lives they live, while acknowledging that "what we do is wrong" with a certain conscious undertone. Just Blaze's beat is awesome, and this song is one to remember. Nate Dogg delivers the hook on "All My Life," and the bass-heavy Peedi Crakk collabo "Flipside" follows. This song was the second single, showcasing a pumped-up Freeway at his lyrical finest, over a true banger of a beat. Nelly provides a high profile guest on the pretty nice "On My Own," I recognized the hook's guitar sample from A Tribe Called Quest's "Lyrics to Go." Snoop Dogg guests on the solid "We Get Around," and I really like Faith Evans's vocals on "Don't Cross the Line." Another B-Sig collabo, "Life," has nice production with good yet familiar verses, and "Full Effect" has a chilling beat with the Young Gunz featured. The hard "Turn Out the Lights" and "Victim of the Ghetto" are two nice deep-album cuts, and the excellent "You Don't Know" has a cleverly-produced piano-laced beat and hook. One of the very best songs is the excellent "Alright," where vocalist Allen Anthony makes a wonderful guest. Freeway is thoughtful but happy over one of the best beats of Just Blaze's career. His instrumental here is excellent. My favorite song, though, might be "Hear the Song." You might recognize this sample as the one Nas later used for "Just A Moment," but I think Kanye did it better with this song. Free's verses are thought-provoking. The album closes with two bonus tracks. The first is a Mariah Carey and Jay-Z collaboration, "You Got Me," which is the worst song on the album, not awful but definitely slow and sluggish. The second is an absolute banger, the anthemic "Line 'Em Up," which has a hard-rocking beat and nice chemistry between Freeway and Young Chris.

More so than the other young rappers in the ROC, I think Freeway is a guy with a lot of star power and mass appeal, and given the chance to emerge from his mentors' shadows he could become a big heavyweight in hip hop. His rough streets lyricism and gruff delivery with his Muslim mentality make him a unique yet still very accessible rapper. It's been a long time already, but I hope to watch his career continue to rise with his upcoming album. In the meantime, if you haven't, definitely check out "Philadelphia Freeway."

Yo my man is hot u can't hate on him. His flow is vicious he real. His lyrics is just raw and the best part about it he signed to the Rock. U got to cop 3 copies one for the crib one for the whip and one just cause it's a classic. Holla

4 out of 5 stars The Roc have started with a bang!.......2003-02-28

I have to say this is easily one of the most anticipated albums of the year besides 50 cent but this album does live up to the hype. Just Blaze takes production for bulk of the album but some of the other producers do their thing on the album. One standout track is "All My Life" feat Nate Dogg and I have to say that Nate Dogg sounds really good on this song. The best song on this album being"What we do" with Jay-z and Beanie Siegel. There are some forgettable songs though like "You got me" and "On my own" feat Nelly. The lyrics are good but the Nelly chorus drags the song down. But despite these songs, this is a very solid debut by all counts and definitely one of the best debuts in a while. And the beats on this album are incredible. This has to be the Rocafella's best album since the first blueprint.

if Toni Braxton couldn't sing I would go One Star less but due to Her Range I give Her one extra star.it's ashame She has to come back with a Song that Lightweights like Ashanti,J-Lo,etc... would glady Sing.Toni is better than this.

      5 out of 5 stars Great song!.......2003-01-07

It's a shame I only heard this song a couple times on the radio and seen the video only once. They need to play this more because Toni Braxton is one of the most talented sistas out there singing and she deserves some shine. The beat is tight and Toni's singing is crisp and clear. Loon is ok on the track but he could have been left off. I don't own this single but it's a great song. More Than A Woman will definitely be the next R&B album I purchase.

      4 out of 5 stars Great work.......2002-12-13

Toni Braxton has changed her style in music, but for her it turned out to be a great thing. This song is sexy and has a good danceble tune to it. The bridge of the song is so lovely! Even though this song never topped that charts, it really deserves to because its a great song!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE COMEBACKS OF THE YEAR!.......2002-12-11

Wow! Toni's back baby and my what a great track! Neptunes have done it again and Toni's sensual vocals make this tune compulsive listenting. Whether it be at the club, in the car or on the radio this tune should get all the attention it fully deserves!(A bit dissapointed the extended version is not on the album) but still...buy the single!!!
