About the Artist
"Steven Mark plays guitar and sings sweetly but with biting dark lyrics. He has the voice, the acumen and the intellect to take his music to the masses." Keith Hannaleck Progressiveworld.net "This album breaks out of the traditional mold and features Steven Mark's dreamy Beatlesque sound. This is mellow music that your parents probably chilled out to in the sixties. Vividly written imagery abounds throughout Mark's songwriting." Discoveringartists.com Steven Mark lives in New York City.

    5 out of 5 stars I love DSP.......2007-06-02

A few of the songs aren't quite up to par with the previous album, but I love this CD (along with most of the 5 Minute Walk / SaraBellum catalog). My favorite track is probably the brooding "Heavy as it Goes," great way to end the recording carrier of a great band. Intelligent and challenging lyrics, great music. Justin Steven's vocals are an acquired taste, but addictive once acquired. Give it a chance and you won't regret it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-08-14

The music is awesome, the lyrics and riveting and you will find yourself inspired and changed by the album. It's very heartfelt and passionate.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2002-07-05

I generally don't like Christian music, simply because most of it is cheesy. Dime Store Prophets, though, has surprisingly intelligent lyrics, and I dig the Southern Rock sound. There are a couple cheesy tracks on the CD, but I think the purpose behind them was fun, and not to deliver a serious message, so it's okay.

The best songs on the album are the title track, Boxing Shadows, and Suckers Alchemy.

Oh, and one more reason I like the album, it's got a sullen feel to it, which is unique in Christian music. It's not the happy-go-lucky attitude that most bands try to convey.

    Album Description

The debut album by Norwegian four-piece Span is chock full of fat riffs & big melodic choruses. Influenced by nu-metal originators Incubus & the godfathers of funk-metal Faith No More, 'Mass Distraction' is a pumped up, adrenaline inducing record of pure unadulterated rock mayhem. The power lies in the catchiness, no doubt influenced by the production work of Gil Norton (Foo Fighters/Distillers), 'Mass Distraction' is addictive listening. Every sky-scraping chorus incites fist pumping sing-a-longs & every lick inspires manic air guitar (just make sure you're not out in public). A huge album from a band with a huge potential. Includes the singles, 'Found', 'Don't Think The Way They Do', 'Baby's Come Back', & 'On My Way Down'. Features 12 tracks including the video for the song 'Don't Think The Way They Do'. Universal/Island. 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Rock - plain and simple.......2005-08-17

I heard these guys in the car commercial as well. I immediately ran to the computer and found out who they were. Ordered the CD here that night. What a great disc! Raw, punchy, and full of rawk! Just the way I like it. There needs to be more of this on the radio these days - people that actually play instruments, and sing their own songs. Way to go Span! Come to the US!!!

5 out of 5 stars These guys were born for this.......2005-07-21

When I heard "Stay as you are" for the first time in a car commercial I thought "WOW! I gotta find out who these guys are!" After a little internet research and getting the CD I found that the rest of Spans music grabbed me with equal voracity. In my 30 some odd years of music buying (I'm 43)I've had a love at first listen experience only 3 times. That was Aerosmith "Rocks", Jeff Beck "Wired", and Primus "Anti-pop". I haven't been this excited about a band in years. I'm sure that younger listeners will find newer bands to compare Span to that I'm unfamiliar with, but to me they have a "Toys in The Attic" era Aerosmith vibe goin' on. That is not to say that these guys are a knock-off band, they have their own sound. And there's a number of other influences I hear, most notably (at least in my head) Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick and Joe Satriani. But they have that same swagger and strut confidence and cockiness that Steve Tyler and company have. It's headbanging and at the same time toe tapping music.
As a long time lover of progressive rock (Steve Morse, Jeff Beck, Dream Theatre, etc.) most straight up rock and roll bands don't keep my attention. But Span, while having a straight up rock and roll energy to them, also have a highly developed sense of composition. They masterfully turn phrasings and change up beats without interrupting the flow. They know how to contrast pauses and silence with the heavy stuff to create an even heavier feel; something that few bands, even some great ones, understand. And you gotta love the singers voice (I wish I knew their names); this guy sounds like he's got some nads and he doesn't have to scream all day to prove it.
I also have to compliment the producers of this CD. Over the years I can't count how many bands I've heard that had great material that was either drowned in effects or had production values that made the sound thin. "Mass Distraction" doesn't have any production distractions. All that comes through is the music, loud and clear.
All in all, Span has every ingredient to become a HUGE success. Because of the diversity of musical tastes these days it's hard to say how huge, but having that perfect combination of brains, heart and balls I think Spans appeal will pull alot of people out of their boxes. This music sounds like it comes so naturally to them that they must have been doing it since the craddle.
P.S. to Chris Hanks: I whole-heartedly agree with your music review. But how about saving your silly-ass, simple minded political opinions for MoveOn.org or the blog zone. Just a suggestion.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2005-04-07

I just listened to this all the way through for the first time and my head's still spinning. It's a little hard to describe all of the varied influences that converge onto what is Span, but the result is rich and novel. This is the second time a CD has made it onto my "10 for a desert island" list after its inaugural spin (the first being Elliott Smith's XO).

A gun-metal band whose energy level never drops below just above the speed limit, Span finds the time to be subtle and nuanced somewhere amid the controlled chaos: powerfully rich harmonies in "Stay as You Are," melodic voicings in "Missing in Stereo," the innovative chord phrasings in "On My Way Down," and a trip to the moshpit with "Baby's Come Back" are a few of the treats on this explosive-but-professional effort. It's seamless.

And as someone who thinks that the neoconservative corporate-conformist anti-intellectualism (the one that's got Americans thinking it a good thing to quietly and uncritically nod along while the bible usurps their Constitution and warmongering trumps diplomacy) sends a bad message, Span seems to have a good message: Conform at your own risk.

I have a 91-year-old friend whose birthday is coming up in May, and I'm getting her this CD. It's *that* good.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

    Recommended.

This albums moody mix of 60's inspired sound combined with insightful bohemian angst is truly refreshing in a world filled with pre packaged sound. The Distraction don't take themselves or anything too seriously. 14 tracks. Dirtnap. 2002.

      Album Description

The Lucksmiths have had a remarkably busy year, recording recent album "Naturaliste" and playing sold out live dates in Australia, USA, Japan, England, Spain and Sweden. Now they spoil us again with a brand new mini-album "A Little Distraction" featuring six exclusive, eclectic songs. The music is warm and familiar—recalling the classic jangle of The Pastels and The Wedding Present as well as the infectious summery strum of Jonathan Richman. As usual, things are lyrically close to home. The opening track "Transpontine" dissects Melbourne's famed north-south rivalry, whilst (metaphorically perhaps) warning of the dangers of trekking too far afield. The dynamically bipolar "Successlessness" is a consolation to a disillusioned lover with sublime 12-string guitar adding just enough chime to reassure the listener of the song's sentiment. Elsewhere, The Lucksmiths strip things back on the heartfelt and yearning title track, and find themselves wandering through a darker, jazzier terrain as "Moving" takes a turn for the esoteric. Concluding with the ultra-poppy hit "After the After Party" and the lovely "Honey Honey Honey," it's all here and more. Reminiscent of their brilliant "Staring At The Sky" CD from 1999, "A Little Distraction" is the Lucksmiths at their very best. Deluxe digipak edition.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Christian band around!.......2002-08-28

The Ultimate Distraction is the freshest Christian/gospel album to come along in years. The style and songwriting is so good, it makes it hard to pigeonhole this band into a perticular style. That, however, is what makes this album so good. The songwriting is not watered down Christianity but at the same time the music does not come off preachy and arrogant. An excellent album worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars The Supreme Focus.......2002-03-02

I can still hum a few bars of "If Anybody Sees My Girl" from Tom Kell's 1993 CD "Angeltown" on Vanguard. With that & his 1990 Warner Bros. debut "One Sad Night," he established himself as a golden boy of Southern California pop.

The hooks & the melodies are still intact, but Tom has turned his focus on songs of faith. What a gold mine this is for the God conscious! Tom's acoustic guitar is so sweet & his voice melts like a lemon drop on the beautiful opener "Let the Rain Fall," "There's a better way to walk this Earth!" My favorite track has the ironic title of "Suffer, Suffer, Suffer." The irony is that suffering has never been more pleasurable because this is a great tune of joyful infectious pop folk, "I'm just a sinner, baby, saved by his grace." The acoustic guitar slows and the music is like a love song in its tenderness, "Life is but a test to fail, and everyone who ever lives leaves behind a sinner's trail." "When You Lay Your Head Down" has great hooks on the midtempo pop track, "It doesn't take that much to see some kind of miracle created everybody & me; there's a heavenly paint brush over my head." "Tis By Faith" is a pretty tune, "There's a ray of light & it shines so bright, on wings of faith I've learned to fly." "Sunday's Comin'" is a happy tune that makes you want to slap your thigh to the beat. The harmony vocals are gorgeous with a bluegrass touch on the midtempo "Open the Gates of Prayer." "The Choice" is choice folk pop. "Walk Inside His Grace" has rhythm guitar that reminds me of the Eagles' "Witchy Woman" while the lyrics puts this in the context of loving Christ. "I've Been With Jesus" has peppy acoustic guitar, "I know this man's a Master, my dearest friend." The most beautiful melody is the slow "Tenderness & Gold," "Dear Lord, I can't explain away these loving tears I cry; nor can I see the souls of men ascending when they die." The CD closes with Kenny Edwards' mandolin lifting the track "Take Me There" with an energetic old time bluegrass gospel feel.

Kell's CD works as great music. Even those who are not predisposed toward a so-called "Christian" CD will still be quite comfortable here because the music is SO good! If I were to encourage the band on where to go from here, I'd like to hear more songs of faith talking about the nature of God, His Truth, Beauty & Goodness in addition to how we feel as men and women uplifted by the Spirit. Kell is supremely focused in his vision; and the music shines so sweet. Enjoy!
