One can't listen to Muse without hearing Bends-era Radiohead, so it's necessary to start there. But for all the familiar grandeur and gloom, Muse's other catharsis-rock influences, like Queen, Slade, and even Black Sabbath, provide the band with a dazzling, heart-on-their-sleeves theatricality. Always threatening to layer on another falsetto from singer Matt Bellamy, or conjure more guitar crunch from the ether, Absolution is downright Baroque in parts, like a Rufus Wainwright-penned rock opera fantasy. Yes, the record is completely unoriginal. But when these guys let it rip, there's no doubt they have the fever. "Stockholm Syndrome," for one, could only be produced by True Believers with a lust for power chord drama, full of angst, envy, and the bitter end of it all. If you wish a certain Thom Yorke-led outfit from Oxford had made another record or two before evolving into minor-key art rockers, Muse carry the torch for another few miles, gloriously and tragically unaware that they're running in circles. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Top album of 2004.......2007-07-09

Bought this album just for the heck of it a few years ago. Never heard Muse before. What an amazing album.. Every song has it's own groove and feel to it. It's like riding a rollercoaster of greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Completely amazing.......2007-07-03

Every single song on this cd is amazing! They are all deep, emotionally charged, and beautiful. You can feel the emotion as you listen to them. Completely breathtaking. Muse is one of the best bands ever created. This cd only adds to that.

5 out of 5 stars Get Black Holes and Revelations first.......2007-06-27

This is the album that put Muse on the map, but Black Holes and Revelations is the album that made them the biggest act in Europe and possibly the US someday. Long live Muse!

5 out of 5 stars Sonic assualt on your senses..........2007-06-14

Like some people, I discovered Muse partly on accident. About two years ago I was listening to my usual radio station, Live 105 here in the SF Bay Area, when a song came on 'Time Is Running Out', one of the many good selections on this cd. After I heard that track, throughout the next few days more tracks of this CD played on the radio. I ended up buying this CD only two years ago, after I fell in love with their latest release, 'Black Holes And Revelations'.

But I will say this about Muse, yes, the lead singer sounds a little like Thom Yorke, but the overall sonic sound of Muse is nothing like Radiohead. Radiohead stuck to a narrow sound of BritPop. Muse on the other hand have really expanded the sound of what rock should sound like. Experimental, environmental, grand and symphonic. But if you really would like to get the full sound of Muse, I suggest you try and catch a Muse live show. I recently caught these guys when they came around to San Francisco. I was blown away at how great these guys are live. I hold the firm belief that Muse is one of best current live bands(aside from maybe The Arcade Fire) that not everyone has heard of.

In closing do yourself a favor, if you love rock music, get this CD(along with their other CDs), and go catch these guys live(if the show isn't sold out...)

4 out of 5 stars a lot of ppl don't get muse.......2007-04-19

for a while i didn't get this band... because their singer sounds similar to thom yorke, i was expecting to get what you get from a radiohead song, which makes them sound boring... it took pulling an allnighter of work listening to muse and something hit me... this group sounds a lot more like philip glass than it does like radiohead or queen. they have the texture of a dramatic prog-rock band, but their songs are very minimalist: with drawn-out and carefully building ups and downs that leave you with the feeling that you're just floating along as you listen. the songs aren't very exciting, but that's not the point. absolution as an album blends together well as one full piece, and all the smaller pieces within it lock together so sweetly :)

4 out of 5 stars Avarice & Absolution one of the best of 2005.......2006-01-17

People say the lead singer reminds them of Velvet Revolver but I never cared for that guys voice and can really get into Revery. This CD is beefed up of some of the finest hard rock music for a debut band. I love 12 of the 13 songs and for many different reasons. For one there's some great rock anthems, my favorite of which is Walk The World. I haven't been to one of their shows yet but I'd assume that one gets the crowd going like no other. Then there's songs with killer guitar solos(Sugar Star has one of my favorite solos ever) including one that seems to be a finale in the last song Which Way To Sunday. Then there's the quarky song like August where the lead singer does something I'd sooner expect to hear in a Disturbed or Sevendust song but he pulls it off very well.

Most of the songs have catchy vocal hooks but the guitar work and overall feel of the songs is pretty much as well put together as a new band could have it. It's one of my favorite debut CD's since Shinedown's Leave A Whisper and Pearl Jam's Ten. This band has a lead guitarist that could carry them to places that average radio bands could only dream of.

There's only two complaints I have that knocks this down to a 4/5 stars. The first is that Penelope has horrible lyrics that remind me of Nickelback. The second is that there's really no slow song(don't mean a ballad) to change the pace a bit. Secondhand Redemption is about as close as you get and even then by the end of the song your rocking out. I look forward to see where they go from here and how they evolve as musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Such a solid rock album that you'd swear Revery has been around for years.......2005-12-21

The Good
"(Look At) What You've Done" leads the charge with driving riffs and empowering vocals. Jason Martinez has a deep, throaty delivery that compliments the music well. Guitarists John Adkins and Michael Doyle trade infectious riffs and licks on "In the Way She." Revery mixes it up a bit on "3 Weeks." The track begins with some great acoustic guitar tones that eventually get swallowed by chunky riffage. "Popstar Wedding" barrels along with muted riffs and fervent vocals. The wailing guitar bends are sure to sting you.

The chorus on the "Walk the World" is quite catchy and helps option the track for a rock radio single. Martinez recalls a little bit of Sully Erna from Godsmack in his tonality. On "August" though, he sounds more like Dave Draiman from Disturbed with his freestyle heavy metal grunts. The riffs are sharp enough to cut right through you. I'm not done with vocalist comparisons. Martinez is clearly inspired by some of the best metal voices out there today. You'd swear that it was Anthrax with John Bush that cut "Gotta Get to You". I wouldn't say that these guys are copying these bands, but their influences are strong.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Avarice & Absolution is such a solid rock album that you'd swear Revery has been around for years. It's highly appropriate that the group chose a bomb for the cover of this album, because the music is simply explosive.

4 out of 5 stars A hard rocking Debut album for this Virginia Based band.......2005-11-09

this is a really strong first release for this popular virginia Beach based band. The songs are compareable to anything that popular bands such as Nickelback and Shinedown have released recently.

Lead vocalist Jason Martinez has a strength and range, that reminds people of Scott weiland. The guitars do not over power the vocals, and help to give this album a "great big sound".

While most of this album is straight foward rock, the songs "3 weeks" and "second hand redemption" are both power ballads that can be crossover hits on both rock and pop stations.

The song "in the way that she" has the line " I've got a million dollar question for you". well the only question that needs to be asked is "are you going to buy this album"?

Take it from this reviewer, when you do, you will be glad that you did.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Written Piece of Art.......2007-06-29

Based on a purely classical mind set, this is one of the most beautiful string tribute albums there are. Granted, Muse fans who usually don't listen to string albums probably won't appreciate it, but for the classical lover, this is the tribute album to start with. The String Tribute to Muse is an absolute masterpiece amongst tributes.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for the casual fan.......2007-05-19

I agree very much with Brian Allen; you should only spend the money on this one if you happen to be either a big fan or strings or a big fan of Muse, and I fall very much into the latter. As far as the songs themselves, some sound beautiful. "Bliss" nearly breaks your heart as an all-string tribute. But other songs are hard-core alternative rock, like "Stockholm Syndrome" so songs like that sound awkward at best. If you like a song by Muse here and there, only have one or two of their CDs, and think, "Oh, they're alright," don't bother purchasing it. However for big Muse fans, it's a nice treat.

2 out of 5 stars Review from a classical musician.......2006-02-05

I play cello in a string quartet and am a huge Muse fan as well. As far as this compilation of, perhaps, some of Muse's greatest hits, a string quartet version just doesn't depict the kind of emotional response that I get from listening to the orignal trio. I listened to some of these tracks and thought I was listening to my buddies playing Muse songs by ear and just messing around. Save your money, or better yet, for the same price go out and treat yourself to the original albums that these songs derived from (Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry and Absolution)!

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't do them justice........2006-02-04

Well, before I say anything about this tribute album, let me state clearly for the record that I am a HUGE Muse fan, and always will be. I'm also very fond of classical music, so I thought this album would be incredible. Unfortunately, that assumption was way off. To me, this was basically like a bunch of recordings of people humming Muse songs. The original tracks have so much power and emotion, but these versions seem cheap and empty. If they would have had a full orchistra it would have been awesome. The string quartet just doesn't cut it, at least not for me. Of course, this is all in my humble opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-12-06

I'll do an actual review later, but here are some of my thoughts on this album, since only one other person rated it so far. The songs all sound great, but they hardly differ from the original versions, and none of them are really that much different. Most of them sound note for note the same, but just played on the strings. This is ok because Muse has a lot of classical influence in their songs, but I wish the makers would have put more effort into this. If you're a casual fan you can skip, but if you really like string tributes or Muse you should get it. Some better string tributes, which are less basic, are the ones for Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, and A Perfect Circle.

5 out of 5 stars Takes me on a journey..and Im not sure I want to return!.......1998-07-24

I know nothing of Carol Noonan's work before Absolution..so alas, I cant say "Im so disappointed with this stuff after Knots and Crosses..." I just have to accept it on its own terms. Well, after 3 years, the terms are still quite positive, and this recording still stands out as her best. Its not as glitzy as "B&W" and not as eclectic as "OW", but is just so powerful in the singing and lyrics. Warning: It does not "rock out"--this is folk---and perhaps one of the reasons why Carol Noonan avoids work from this album in now rare concert appearances is because the style is somewhat limiting. Its also a bit more brooding than even her later songs about psyho killers and medieval queens dying in childbirth. Still... is just so enduring!

4 out of 5 stars More melodrama! more epics! more keyboards!.......2006-06-11

it's a case of more of the same here from this outstanding band on this album. Absolution solidifies the status of Muse as the natural heirs to the alternative rock throne once occupied by Radiohead. add a bit of Queen's melodrama, some of the bombast from The Who and you've got Muse. the songs are razor-sharp with their hooks, big and beefy in their stride, and pristine in their performance and production. "Time Is Running Out," "Stockholm Syndrome," "Blackout," ...all amazing songs that make this cd worth the price of admission alone. i'm not too crazy about the artwork on this cd...a little hokey, i think...but it doesn't detract from the awe-inspiring epic pop rock that will dive straight into you once this disc starts spinning. Muse started off on a really good foot with the Showbiz album...then they upped the quality with Origin Of Symmetry, now Absolution towers over all three (just by a bit)....it's going to be tough to follow this up. keep your fingers crossed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolution - Must Have CD.......2005-08-03

My friend described this as Queen meets Radiohead, which peaked my interest. Little did I know that this would be one of my favorite CD's ever. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolution is Muse's Absolute Best.......2005-06-17

Absolution is to Muse as Diorama is to Silverchair or OK Computer is to radiohead. It's simply Muse's best effort thus far. It's the conglomaration of everything they've been attempting up to this point rolled into one tightly knit bundle of musical freedom and epic sound. Absolution has gutwrenching power, as well as, heartstopping melodies depending on which tracks you've got slicing the airwaves. I've got everything they've put out from Showbiz forward, and there's no turning back after picking up my copy of Absolution.
Listen, if you like power emo stuff like Sunny Day Real Estate or acoustic rage like Dashboard Confessional~ do yourself a favor and take it to the next level. Pick up a copy of Absolution and burn a few tracks for your friends. You'll be the new music guru and chiefton of your particular clan and your entourage will be thanking you for months to come.

5 out of 5 stars Like Radiohead, but with more rock.......2005-03-05

Radiohead has been my favorite band since 7th grade and will always like them better than Muse. But this album in particular has many qualities people like about Radiohead (the angst, conspiracy theories, lashing out against society) without some of the thing people dislike about Radiohead (namely Thom Yorke's singing).

With that aside, this album is good not only because it sounds similar to one of the most impressionable bands of our time, but because it just rocks out. This band presents sadness, love, terror and regret all in about one hour's time. Songs range from grinding, gritty guitars to a beautiful Mozart-like requiem at the end.

Definitely an album every lover of rock needs to hear.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely absolution.......2005-02-24

Apparently the third time was the charm -- little-known Brit-rock band Muse's third album was the one to break out in the US. "Absolution" is definitely a dark little gem -- the songs focus on deterioration and lost love, set against classical-sounding rock.

"And pull us through/And this is the end/This is the end of the world." An ominous piano crashes into "Apocalypse," which is only one of several songs with a deathly edge, such as the epic "Time is Running Out" or the soaring "Butterflies and Hurricanes" ("Fights and battles have begun/Revenge will surely come/Your hard times are ahead..."). Even the most intimate song is the thoughts of a dying atheist, afraid of what is -- and isn't -- after death.

But Muse is also focusing on love. Dead loves, lost loves, and the idea of loves that can't or won't last out. The delicate, bittersweet "Sing for Absolution" is perhaps the purest example of this -- a love song for a woman who is apparently dead. Other songs focus on the mix of love and hate, and the feeling of love crumbling away.

That focus of death and love -- or both together -- is what makes "Absolution" so compelling. Muse is often written off as a Radiohead clone, but their sound is more complex, and their focus is darker. A riff here and there echoes of Radiohead, and Matt Bellamy's voice echoes that of Thom Yorke. But that's about all.

There's nothing spacey or eerie about Muse's brand of rock. Instead, they opt for a soaring, rich sound, with orchestral melodies. It's obvious that Bellamy has studied not just rock, but classical as well -- he integrates the epic quality of classical music into a melody written for guitar, bass, piano and drums. At times the sound is so massive -- not loud, but massive -- that it sounds like the speakers are going to explode.

With music like that, one would think that Bellamy's voice would get lost in the mix. Surprisingly he doesn't -- he's no Jose Carreras, but his voice has gained new maturity, able to be a standard rock voice one moment, and then a pure choral vocalist the next. He brings across the heartbreak and anguish in the songs with startling purity, as if he means every word.

In fact, those songs are the one weak spot -- they aren't as big or as rich as the music, which makes them sound a bit tepid. They're not bad. But they simply don't measure up to the musical genius. So ignore the words, and just listen to Bellamy and the music.

The orchestral wall-of-sound has been Muse's trademark, and they are in fine form in their third album. Beautiful, rich and heartbreaking, this is one to keep.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music........2007-01-10

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.

5 out of 5 stars "Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09

Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!

Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2006-11-15

After the long awaited absense, amazon finally has Muse's famed Absolution Box Set. When I popped in the first Dvd, I was surprised at the quality and the features that were on there, very impressive. Many of the Dvds had interesting photos of the band and added video tracks of Muse on their absolution tour. The singles had a wonerful enhanced sound and were just as well brilliant. The price is a little overkill considering some features didn't work on my dvd player and I already had all the songs on the singles, but for a die hard Muse fan, it is a necessity to any collection. Just to forewarn all those who are interested, your dvd player must be able to play region 0 dvds, otherwise they won't work.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary band, poor CD production.......2005-10-20

If you're reading about Absolution, I don't need to tell you how influential of a band they were. I believe this CD has pretty much every song they wrote, but it's thrown together so carelessly. They didn't go to any source tapes. Well, maybe the rough soundboard tapes were masters. The 7 inch they put out is a transfer of the 7 inch. Clicks and all. The beginning of one of those songs is cut off. The four songs from that release are spread out among other tracks of varying sound quality. I know they professionally recorded Endless Game. I recorded it off the radio long ago. Only a lo-fi live version is included here.

Man, this band deserves SUCH better treatment. But it's all there is.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest hardcore band no one ever heard of.......2003-09-01

What more can i say about Absolution than they are one of the greatest hardcore bands of all time even though they only had one studio release, the 7" classic on Revelation Records. This cd has those four songs and a slew of other live songs that were never released. The recordings are all right on some songs and not so good on others but this is a cd you must have because all of the songs are great. This is another one of the great NYHC bands who i always thought would have been huge had they come out years later. Instead what they did was influence a generation of hardcore kids into thinking beyond the "fast part- breakdown- fast part" song style that hardcore was falling into. Songs like "Dead and Gone" and "Armed with Anger" are hardcore classics that all new kids should have to listen to before they venture to the mall to get the latest MTV crap that they tell you is good(Rancid, anyone?). Just pick this cd up already and trust me you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Music to my ears ..........2007-03-12

This is one of the greatest instrumental talents I've heard in years. This cd has some of my all-time favorite movie tunes including 'Moon River', 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', and a very beautiful version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. This is the actual band that played in the 1997 movie Titanic and I'm truly thankful that they made this recording for everyone to enjoy. I'll cherish it for years to come. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Familiar music with good performance.......1999-10-03

This CD contains many familiar music from films and the performance of the musicians is very good particularly track 16. I also find the music very relax and enjoyable and can bring the memory of those films if one has ever seen them.

Sinking-ship soundtracks from diverse media coalesce in this well-produced olio of pleasant renditions conducted by Randy Miller and orchestrated by Donald Johnston. The selections include music to the now historical James Cameron film, including "My Heart Will Go On" in both a solo piano and as a grand easy-listening instrumental. Similar respectful treatments are also provided in the fanfare from Jean Negulesco's 1953 film composed by Sol Kaplan, some of William Alwyn's score to Roy Baker's 1958 British film A Night To Remember, Maury Yeston's compositions for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and Lennie Niehaus's score for the 1996 television miniseries. Included also is the sentimental favorite "Nearer My God to Thee," which historians have determined was not played when the real ship went down. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars What an inspiring musical masterpiece!.......1999-11-22

This compilation finally gives us access to a piano version of "my heart will go on", which is to say the least the most beautiful way to listen to the melody. Everytime you play track 2, you feel an epiphany running through your body. Let us thank James Horner's genius for the melody, and those at Varese Sarabande for putting together such a wonderful CD. Hello from Caracas.

4 out of 5 stars I HAVE THE CD AND I LISTEN TO IT OFTEN. I REALLY LOVE IT........1999-05-09

I LOVED THE, CD VERY, VERY MUCH . THE FIRST NIGHT THAT I GOT THE CD I LISTENED TO THE THEME SONG. THEN I REMEMBERED IT. THE CD WAS THE TALK OF THE SCHOOL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplementary Soundtrack to JH's Original.......1998-07-13

Varese Sarabande has put together an excellent compilation and should help hold over Titanic music fans until James Horner's 2nd Titanic Album arrives in September. The album has a number of instrumental tracks to the James Cameron movie as well as music from the Broadway show, the TV Miniseries from '96 (starring Catherine Zeta Jones), the 1958 British Film "A Night to Remember", and the 1953 Hollywood Film (starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck). Even if one has only seen the recent movie, the soundtrack is worthwhile to add to your collection especially if one likes movie instrumental music and Titanic in particular. There are excellent full orchestra versions of the rousing "Southhampton" and "My Heart Will Go On." There is also an excellent piano version of "Rose's Theme" and an excellent old fashioned dance waltz of "Rose"..."A Life So Changed" is my favorite - the inspiring message of living and thriving after the death of a loved one is very poignant...Other tracks are excellent: "Nearer My God to Thee" is sad and elegiac while Lennie Niehaus's "Titanic" is atmospheric and moody...Overall, a very good instrumental album; worth buying!
