5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

An album celebrating harvest's end, Home to Thanksgiving is a harvest itself, selected from nearly a dozen Hillier CDs. The only thing that suffered as the result of Paul Hillier's separation from the Hilliard Ensemble was his albums' graphic design. By leaving Hilliard, the men's vocal group he'd helmed, Hillier abandoned the elegant packaging afforded him by ECM Records. On ECM, his penchant for plainchant was matched by stark photography, lending a steady visual horizon while his group darted maverickly between liturgical music and Arvo Pärt's minimalism.

Somehow at Harmonia Mundi, a new Hillier collection calls for a Currier and Ives painting. So be it. Hillier listeners understand that no marketing feat can fill the gaps that punctuate the 12th-century "O quanta qualia"; only a faith in his distinct musical agenda (or, perhaps, His) can bridge such pauses. There is communal cheer ("The Apple Tree," dating from the Revolution, has a catchy chorus), but it's tempered by introversion. Secular Puritan John Cage shows up, having set lyrics by Thoreau. That follows a 16th-century snippet of Thomas Tallis, and is followed itself by a 12th-century piece that attenuates 13 syllables of benediction for over four minutes. Currier and Ives may greet listeners at the cabin door, but Hillier waits inside with a sermon straight out of Jonathan Edwards. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars Truly joyous music.......2005-10-27

This is a wonderful collection of music for thanksgiving - not just for the holiday, but for everyday. From the energetic opening, "Tis By Thy Strength The Mountains Stand", to the haunting "Evening Hymn" at close, this music is pure joy to listen to. The styles are quite varied and cover everything from plainchant to a somewhat modern take on Thoreau, and it is all very well performed. It is music that sends the soul soaring in thanksgiving to God.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Release.......2007-02-11

Sadly, this is Nehemiah's final recording, as they have disbanded not too long ago. However, I find this to be a rather nice album. Nehemiah plays a style of melodic metal, but the style that is more in the vein of Dead To Fall and Light This City. What makes this stand out is how the band can manage to throw in technical riffs in their style of music. And yes, you have the occassional breakdown, but I'm not against that at all. If you enjoy music in the vain of Dead To Fall, Unearth and Darkest Hour, make sure to pick this up and "The Asphyxiation Process".

5 out of 5 stars truly good music.......2005-07-16

Most metalcore sucks donkey balls, but this is actually good, their first album was good but poorly produced. This is much much better, looking forward to a new real album instead of 3 songs

4 out of 5 stars title of review.......2005-05-26

The best new metalcore band I've heard in a long time. This band's music totally belies their trendy prettyboy image. This is what Dark Tranquillity's new album should have sounded like. The Kings Collapse is an all-out death metalcore assault. Our Great Deceiver takes a little bit of influence from Dillinger Escape Plan's spazzy techy style too. The flamenco intro to Return To Grandeur is blah, the song doesn't really get good until the vocals kick in at the 2:30 mark. The soft non-metal opening to Nepenthe is interesting. Erelong is almost pure metal, a conscoious effort to get away from their hardcore influences maybe, but they still come through in the rhythm of the riffs a bit.

Product Description

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2005-10-07

embarking on their last tour ever, im sad to see these guys go. I had to throw down a quick review for this album because i truley consider it to be one of those great new albums in the last few years. Im particular about the music i listen to so i hold this cd in extreamly high regard. This is and will stay up there with... end this day... - sleeping beneath ashes of creation as well as ...rifles at recess... - to whisper in tounges. all of these artists have now faded away and no longer are with us. (as hope dies would be another if top 4's were popular) Still i know i like reading reviews to see what else everyone here listens to, as well as to find new music. if you have one of the three i mentioned buy the other two, but more importantly; if you have the other two and not this one, well... you owe it to yourself for reading my little speel here.

5 out of 5 stars Snap Your Neck Metal.......2005-10-06

Well my first listen to Nehemiah was on their current album 'Lenore,' which I will add is a great record. There is something about 'Process of Asyphxiation' it carries a rawness that few hybrid bands carry. The band melds a deep hardcore groove with a death metal march that will keep you neck aching for days. The vocals have moments of hardcore screaming mixed with a death metal growl that rival any band out. Pick this album up you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hardcore/Metal around!.......2004-02-28

I got this cd a month ago and can't stop listening to it. It is an awesome hybrid of death metal, black metal, and hardcore. These guys may be the greatest band ever.....

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME HARDCORE!!!!.......2003-10-08

This cd I was at first skeptical about, but after listening to the first song I was hooked! Hardcore is the next generation of holy metal! The Guitar riff's you will find yourself singing all the time and the scream's stay with you. This albumn is new and inventive... check this mother out!

As you can tell from the production alone this is a banger even as an instumental, Braille laces the beats to make a truly impressive album!! Must have HIP HOP!

5 out of 5 stars A Real MC.......2007-01-18

It has taken me a while to get over the high pitched voice. But there is no denying Braille's skills as an emcee, and his ability to surround himself with top notch producers. This album is much better than his last effort (which was a pretty good album!) and even better than LightHeaded's last album. to top it all off, instead of becoming more generic and secular, he focuses his message more on his faith in Jesus Christ than ever before. A must have not just for christian hiphop heads but also for real hip hop fans
