After supplying something known as "additional music" to many films since the late 1990s, Steve Jablonsky seems to have become the go-to composer for director-producer Michael Bay. Jablonsky's score for Bay's sci-fi thriller The Island shows the influence of its producer, Hans Zimmer. "The Island Awaits You" sets up the mood, which is oddly muted for a movie directed by explosion-master Bay. Even a track titled "Mass Vehicular Carnage" is merely ominously low-key, oddly sounding like something by dank trip-hopper Tricky. Elsewhere, the electronic number "Starkweather" successfully creates a feeling of oppressive tension before integrating elements of the main theme. Unfortunately, in his effort to avoid big ka-booms, Jablonsky can be overly subdued; while nothing is jarring, nothing makes much of an impression either. Actually, there is one jarring thing on this CD, and it's the Prom Kings' nu metal/funk hybrid "Blow," tacked on at the end like an afterthought. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
awesome!!!!.......2007-02-18
The brooding post modern industrial feel to the songs on this soundtrack give it a feel of epic proportions. I simplely love it!!!...dark,foreboding, and eerily brilliant on every track....thank you Mr. Jablonsky!
Only one decent song.......2007-01-15
There's only one coherent actual song on this CD. The rest is just a collection of sound effects and short music bits. If you want that one song, the nice one at the very end, fine, but it's too bad there aren't more like it. I think they could have done better. I remember liking the movie soundtrack a lot - I don't think it translates very well to CD, though.
Stunningly good Score!.......2006-11-10
This is a hauntingly good score to a pretty darned good film, which for whatever whim of the masses was less than well received. I you like taiko drums, fast paced and wonderfully executed "world beat" music, this is definitely the score for you, I've played it again and again and it only gets better with each listening.
Track 14 / Worth the price of the CD.......2006-11-04
I agree with other reviewers here -- much of the music on the CD is simply supplemental to the film, is forgetable, nothing really stands out, there is a lack of melody. Only one track (# 14) "My Name is Lincoln" -- stands apart, offering a theme, melody, choir and resolution -- it is a signature bit of composing that, for me, is really worth the price of the CD.
A few standout tracks, but difficult to recommend on the whole........2006-10-27
I'm afraid to say that I find this CD somewhat difficult to recommend as a whole. Steve Jablonsky is a prodigiously talented composer with a bright future; as his score to 'Steamboy' and trailer music and additional themes for Pearl Harbor attests. And although Jablonsky has done his job well here - the Island score works splendidly in the film - on CD the persistent throbbing electronica and pervasive percussion comes off so harshly as to the point of being too abrasive for the listen to be enjoyable (and I'm a big fan of electronica!)
In comparison to something like Spy Game by Harry Gregson-Williams, which is a deep, subtle and nuanced electronic score, the Island is stark and aggressive, with much repetition, few discernable themes, and occasional sequences of outright garish and incoherent noise generated mostly by garbled electric guitars. With all this in mind, I feel the CD generally hovers around the two star mark.
However, there are a couple of BIG standout moments; namely 'The Island' theme itself; first featured on the opening track, and then later on track 10 and elsewhere, has a beautiful, haunting, ethereal quality to it, reminiscent of the opening minute of 'Injection' from the M:I-2 score. Similarly, 'This Tongue Thing's Amazing' and 'You Have a Special Purpose in Life' have long, stretches of warm orchestral music that are decidedly enjoyable and memorable.
Finally - and most importantly - the finale, 'My Name is Lincoln' is such a standout track that it deserves special attention. It's a warm, uplifting, inspiring theme which borrows heavily upon Gladiator's 'Now We Are Free', but with an epic choral backing which pushes it to even greater heights. It's incredible, probably one of my top 10 favourite film score tracks of all time, seriously.
If ever there was an album that you should consider purchasing as individual mp3 tracks, this one is it - a purchase of tracks 1, 2, 6, 10 and 14 will pretty much cover 95% of all the good bits.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Album Description
His bass playing was Weezer's heart, & his falsetto their soul. A founding memeber/co-songwriter of Weezer, and mastermind behind MTV "Buzzclip Act" The Rentals, Matt Sharp's mark on pop won't be forgotten. With his debut EP, Puckett's Versus the Country Boy, a new chapter began. Sharp has left pop behind - preferring a spiritual tone of lap steel, piano, and acoustic guitars. With the help of former Cake guitarist Greg Brown and Rentals touring member Josh Hagar, the tone is set with ghostly sounds, sparse arrangements, & a contemplative, almost haunting mood. Brown's guitar brings a rustic, melodic sense;an authentic American voice. Coinciding with Geffen's release of Weezer's deluxe Blue Album CD/DVD colletion (an album that Sharp palys a pivotal role in), Matt Sharp is sure to impress.
Customer Reviews:
Soft Music Is Surprisingly Deep.......2007-01-07
First off, let me say that this isn't anything like you've heard with The Rentals or Weezer. This is a very quiet album with soft melodies and instruments. Some have said that this is bedtime music, and it is in a way. Not without it's gems, there are a lot of good songs on this album. But you will be dissapointed if you are expecting some moog or pop tunes. The trick is to listen to it with an open ear.
Ehhh.......2005-10-30
I love Matt, he's a really charismatic musician. His work with Weezer and The Rentals is awesome. This album though? Eh, not so much.
It's safe to say that probably 99% of the people who buy this know Matt from his previous work as opposed to his recent solo venture. One might expect the usual rock songs with catchy choruses and perhaps a bit of Moog, but you won't get it. Instead, Matt gives us long flatline epics that you're more likely to fall asleep to than remember.
That's not to say it's all bad. For what it is, this record is okay. If you're into low-key, atmospheric acoustic music, you might like it. The song "Goodbye West Coast" is a decent tune. This type of music just isn't my thing.
Matt is cool, but unfortunately I have to say that I think he needs a partner of some sort in order to be good. His voice just isn't up to par to truly lead. In Weezer, he falsettoed behind Rivers and in The Rentals he had Cheri's lovely female voice to help improve the vocal picture. As I write this The Rentals are supposedly getting back together so maybe he's come to realize his own shortcomings and strengths. I can't recommend this album though.
Good album, still wish he never left Weezer.......2005-10-12
This is a good album, the reason its good, not great is that I wish the 3 songs from Puckett were on here so you didnt have to shell out all that other dough for 3 songs. But this album is stellar nonetheless. It is ideal for this time of year when the weather is cold and dreary. Theres a touch of Dylan (gasp!I said it) in his voice, and his singing style is very unique; it works well with the music. I am all for this if its the music he wants to make, its unique and you can obviously tell hes making it on his own terms. I give it 4 just cuz I'll pretend this and Puckett are one album.
What happened Matt?.......2005-08-04
First off, I just want to say that I love Matt's work with Weezer and The Rentals. Those are some of my favorite discs, period. That being said, I can't believe this disc was produced by the same guy. I had to force myself to listen to this because I kept thinking that maybe I was missing something, but no...this is just experimental garbage...Some tracks begin with long instrumental pieces, interjected with very sparse vocals...ugh. This is not commercial music at all. There is nothing catchy here, no rhythm, no melody...save your money.
Sleepy.......2005-03-03
I'm a big Matt Sharp fan. As a bassist myself, the way he attracted attention to himself in Weezer and then went on to have success with The Rentals is pretty inspiring. To me, Matt is the falsetto singing goofy guy who always entertains. With this new album though, he is obviously no longer trying to play that angle.
I do like this CD, but not in the way that I like most. To sit down and actively listen to it... it's just impossible. The whole thing just blends together in a blur of ambient sounds and melodies. However, I have found use for it! I work night shift, so sometimes I have to catch sleep even when I'm not all that tired. To help, I just pop this CD in and by "Shadows" or "Watch the Weather Break" I'm gone! To tell you the truth, I haven't really heard the last half of this album, despite repeated playings!
In any case altough a bit dreary, it's a good record. "Goodbye West Coast" is probably the standout track, as for the rest... well I can't remember. Props to Matt for this one, but it would be nice to see something more energetic and upbeat for next time!

MORE OF TIM GORMAN, PLEASE.......2002-08-13
This is the best album I own. I love it!! I've made gifts of it to all my friends. They love it. I keep trying to find more of Tim Gorman's work. Where are you Tim Gorman? Please do more albums.
Lorna from Oregon.......2002-04-24
This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. All my friends are crazy about it. I've given it as gifts. Why hasn't Tim Gorman done more? This is the only album I can find that he did. I love his music.
Wonderful........2000-06-13
This is a particularly beautifully arranged collection of classical favorites. It is very relaxing and soothing, but also quite moving. I bought a copy of it to listen to as background music at work. Since that time I have bought five more copies to give to friends, because everyone who hears it just has to have it. The arrangement of Debussy's Clair de Lune, in particular, is very moving. It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.
mesmerizing.......1999-09-14
This is a soothing album to play in the background to help concentration or to just relax.
Ultimate relaxation and meditation music.......1999-02-13
I am ordering 2 more copies for my collection. This is my all time favorite for relaxation and meditation. If I am having a bad day, I will put this on when I climb into the hot tub and drift away. I also use this for when I am happy and want to reflect. The 2 copies are for me so that I can have a backup at home and also a copy for work to help me to concentrate at work. I can honestly say this is the most beautiful CD I have ever heard.

Okay, but I've heard this before.......2003-08-01
First, the price is a little rough.. for 4 songs. The songs are good, though. Matt Sharp seems to be going for a more mature and introspective sound since his days with the Rentals and Weezer. The songs are very dark. No light pop songs here. To describe what the songs sound like brings to mind one band - Wilco. The songs are incredibly similar to the sound of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Not that it is a bad comparison. Its just not cutting any "new ground".
Matt Sharp is Awesome.......2003-07-29
This is a great listen, Good Bye West Coast is the best listen so far but if you know Matt Sharps music that always seems to change as you listen to the album more times. I am looking forward to more new material, so hurry up Mr. Sharp.
