Splendid Review.......2004-10-08
The short version: Houston McCoy's self-titled debut, while not a summer album by any means, provides thirty-seven minutes of pure, unmitigated joy.
The long version: the term "instrumental pop" seems counter-intuitive. Modern pop instrumentation tends to be catchy but harmless, fun but resistible, hooky but likely to fade into the background without vocal assistance. When they chose to make instrumental pop, Houston McCoy gave themselves quite a challenge. Not only do they have to keep their listeners' interest, but rock the ---- out of them. As if that wasn't enough, they have to do so in a fun and catchy manner that listeners will find memorable. After three years of practice, they not only meet the challenge, but make listeners forget it was ever an issue to begin with.
How do they do it? They do it with concentrated doses of King Crimson-style prog. They do it with ever so slightly retro guitar hero bluster. They do it with a willingness to experiment. They do it with style. They have fun. Each of these songs consists of equal parts jagged, angular hooks and ballsy guitar solos, and each is designed to physically force you to get out the old air guitar and practice your moves. That's the closest thing to singing along that an instrumental rock band is going to get.
There's something here for everyone, from the album's slick, frantically danceable beats to the subtle experimental sounds hiding out in "Eulogy". You can pump your fist, shake your ass or stroke your chin. Without words to tell you how to feel about a band as smart and tight as they are rocking, you're free to choose. If music is the currency of culture, this is the American dollar -- anybody from anywhere can find a use for it.
That's not entirely a good thing. As with instrumental rock, each song includes a few seconds of blandness from which it never fully recovers. Even a few seconds of blandness is impressive when you're writing songs that could pass for three and four-minute intros, but the band could clearly stand to improve. Blandness is never a selling point.
Still, it's great to finally have an instrumental rock album that I can support without feeling like a pretentious, self-important ass. Besides, who doesn't need thirty-seven minutes of pure, unmitigated joy?
