This is Chanticleer's 25th recording and also marks its 25th anniversary season. The title refers to the group's wide-ranging repertoire; this disc includes Mexican baroque, traditional American songs in various styles and music commissioned by Chanticleer itself. A program that tries to please everybody is bound to disappoint somebody; however, no one could be disappointed by the singing. The sound of these 12 unaccompanied male voices has an unearthly, celestial beauty and purity; their blend is perfect. Though the singers rarely use vibrato, their intonation is impeccable both together and in solos. Their expressive range and stylistic versatility are incredible: they can project tenderness, pleading, and bitter protest and are equally at home in plainchant, Latin hymns, blues, spirituals, shouts and crooning. Among the highlights are the three opening hymns, settings of two poems of Torquato Tasso by William Hawley, commissioned by Chanticleer, which combine 16th- and 20th-century styles, and the two final folksongs, the last with a stride-style piano accompaniment, making a rousing, exuberant ending. The booklet, in three languages, is well laid-out and informative. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, ecclectic album.......2007-07-11

This CD is a great example of Chanticleer's phenomenal versatility, and it has something for everyone to appreciate. The Appalacian twang on the two Billings pieces is a bit much, but otherwise Chanticleer is in top form here and really shows what they are made of. As for the recording itself, something about the micing or acoustics in the recording process causes the countertenors to be just a tad too strong on a few tracks, but it's not a major problem.

To me, the most extraordinary tracks are: The Un-Covered Wagon with it's surreal effects and incredible array of vocal techniques, Willow Weep For Me, Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Michael Lichtenauer's solo floats so effortlessly in a mixed vocal register, I have never heard anything like it!), and Whispers.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This CD Is Addictive.......2006-12-10

I purchased this CD after hearing this magnificent choral group sing "Calling My Children Home" in a recent concert. Written by Doyle Lawson (from the group "Quicksilver"), Charlie Waller and Robert Yates, the song is a standard bluegrass number I had known for years (Emmy Lou Harris for one has recorded it); but I had no idea it had found its way to San Francisco. Chanticleer has made this song their own. I cannot imagine anyone else's version coming close to theirs.

The group sings 17 other songs on this CD, most of them arranged by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's music director. Their version of William Billings' "David's Lamentation," a Sacred Harp work, will blow you away. Another favorite of mine is "Wayfaring' Stranger." There are also two Stephen Foster songs included, "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Camptown Races" as well as Gershwin and other American composers.

There seems to be no kind of music that this group cannot sing better than most other groups. They remind us that there is no musical instrument more beautiful than the human voice.

This CD should be one for the time capsule.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth buying.......2005-08-16

Chanticleer fans know what to expect in terms of vocal quality, and won't be disappointed. I agree with another reviewer that the Appalachian accent is a little over the top, but I thought the shape-note style was perfect: brilliant sound, but not that nasal.

I enjoyed the many styles of music in this CD, but since I tend to listen to CDs straight through as albums, I found it a little disconcerting to go so suddenly from one style to the next (e.g., Mexican Baroque to shape note).

That being said, everything is splendidly, sensitively performed. The renditions of "Whispers" and "The Un-Covered Wagon" are breathtaking. By all means, buy and enjoy this!

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of American Choral Music.......2005-01-03

This album features a wonderful selection of "American" choral music. I'm not a big fan of the "stylized" singing of the shape-note pieces (with the nasal voices), but that is my only complaint. My favorite piece is Steven Stucky's "Whispers" which is an artfully crafted homage to Orlando Gibbons' "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears" and William Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus." Joseph Jennings and Chanticleer effectively demonstrate that there is no "defining" American choral music and it is this rich panoply of variety which is so enchanting!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!!.......2003-10-25

This album shows Chanticleer's great talent and it displays they're wonderful voices. I've seen them perform pieces from this album and they do it with such passion. It's wonderful. If you don't get this or any of their albums you truly are missing out!!

Proudly wearing their reputation as the "ultimate bar band," Hootie & the Blowfish have proven decisively that in a pop-music taproom bristling with full-bodied micro-brews and exotic imports, there are plenty who still crave Budweiser--and often Bud Light. It's hardly surprising then that in compiling this rarities collection, the band invited its fan base to choose a third of the album's 15 tracks (and its cover design) by voting at the Web site of a beer company. The result is a de facto tribute to much of the band's own favorite music, from vintage staples such as Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby," "Use Me" by Bill Withers, and Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I Do" (13.98% of the virtual pub poll) through R.E.M.'s "Driver 8," the Reivers' "Araby," and "Almost Home" (14.24%) to seemingly improbable choices such as an unplugged rendition of Tom Waits's "I Hope I Don't Fall in Love with You," Vic Chestnutt's "Gravity of the Situation," and the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (13.11%). Even on Kim Richey's countrified "Let Me Be Your Man" (the poll topper at 15.47%), Darius Rucker and company display an uncanny ability to unify--and homogenize--seemingly disparate material into their own endlessly bubbly brew. Even if all of it doesn't all taste great, it's definitely less filling. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Rarities.......2006-11-01

An album that at first appears somewhat more eclectic than your average Hootie album. After a time of listening to it, the disparate styles of music, which cross from full-on bouncy pop (Araby) to mellow classics (Hey Hey What Can I Do?) to country (Fine Line) to golden oldies (Dream Baby), seem somewhat helter skelter in their scattering throughout this album. Yet after a while, the album seems to pick up a flow that almost begins to make complete sense. Sure, the styling is somewhat random, but the musical quality of the tracks selected, including a soulful live cut (I Hope I don't Fall in Love With You) allows the listener to enjoy the fullest range of Hootie's distinctive and easily identifiable sound. I am purchasing this album for a second time, since continuous play of the first copy left it so badly scratched that I am forced to purchase a second copy to make up for the unplayability of the first. I rate this album as perhaps the very best of all of Hootie's albums.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Give This Album 10 Out 10 I Would.......2005-01-31

This album is definetely my favorite Hootie & the Blowfish album. I think that it is better than all of the other albums because it has some of the best songs on this slbum, like "Fine Line" and "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" and "Use Me" those are my absoulte favorite songs of all the Hootie songs. I definetely recommened that you buy this album if you are a true Hottie & the Blowfish fan.

4 out of 5 stars Hootie Does No Wrong.......2004-06-14

The first time I saw Hootie and the Blowfish was in 1993 when I was a freshman at USC and they played a frat party I went to - I was completely hooked! They continue to be my favorite band! Darius has the most amazing and distinct voice - I can't get enough. The only reason this rating isn't 5 stars is because they didn't record my favorite 2 cover songs they used to do (maybe it's a copyright thing) --> "Mustang Sally" and "Love the One You're With." But I can't complain too much - this whole album is a treat!

4 out of 5 stars Something the fans deserved!.......2004-03-04

Finally, a collection of the stuff that for whatever reason, didn't make the original albums, or wound up scattered (get the title now?) over various soundtracks or import versions of the albums...all in one place. The band has been doing 54-40's "I Go Blind" for years. in fact it was recorded back during the Cracked Rear View sessions...appeared on the Friends TV soundtrack...Use Me has been a concert tune for a long time too...nice to see these and all the other songs together that up until this album have been a case of get 'em where you can find 'em. Thanks guys...and thanks for continuing to be consistently excellent...for those of you who STILL (!) aren't familiar with these guys, get their new Best Of collection...and this one...then go out and grab Cracked Rear View...and then the rest of 'em!

5 out of 5 stars The many faces of Hootie.......2003-11-06

Hootie & the Blowfish began as a kick@ss bar cover b and, and that reappears here with some great covers, along with awesome B-Sides. The diversity on this album is amazing. Fine Line is bluesy, I Go Blind explodes with trademark Hootie rock, then Almost Home shows off their more bluegrass side, before a Led Zeppelin cover rocks you, then Darius lets loose with one of most soulful, incredible vocal performances I've ever heard (Renaissance Eyes). And that's just the first five songs, a taste of what this album brings. There's an REM cover, original Hootie stuff, it's all different and it's all great. Forget what you may have heard about this band, if you love MUSIC get this and their other albums and you will not be disappointed

4 out of 5 stars I love Webb, but why can't Cheap Trick have this kind of consistency?.......2006-01-06

It's maddening that we have to wait so long
for great albums like this to come out while
Cheap Trick can put out all the compilations
and DVDs, et, all they want and they are only
three quarters as good as the 'The last of the
Full Grown Man', Mr. Jack-of-All-Media trades,
Webb Wilder. Really this is three albums in one
not just a 'Greatest Hits' or 'Best Of...'.Long
time Wilder fans will notice that there are no
songs from Webb's bigger budget releases like:
Doo Dad and Hybrid Vigor here. But it's OK
since there are no EVEN just-above-average LPs
in the Webb Wilder discography:

1) It Came From Nashvegas,
2) Hybrid Vigor,
3) Doo Dad,

5 out of 5 stars "three albums in one work their magic from Varese ~ Webb Wilder".......2005-08-06

Varese Records presents "Scattered, Smothered and Covered: A Webb Wilder Overview", reissued tracks of albums from the past "It Came From Nashville" (1993), "Town & Country" (1995) and "Acres of Suede" (1996) all on the Watermelon Records label, featuring the one and only Webb Wilder and his Beatnecks...crazy beat and delivery with a kind of out there performance...his guitar work and stage presence is what grabs you from the git go.

Wilder's mention of the "Rock n' Roll Justice League" gives you a glimpse of what's in store on this cool and do you dig it release with...combining no nonsense rockabilly to create little jewels like "POOLSIDE" and "RUFF RIDER" (Dedicated to Broderick Crawford)." As with early rock, meaningful lyrics make way for a more visceral approach, leading to music that you feel right down to the bottom of your toes..."FLAT OUT GET IT", composed by Webb Wilder with vibes of Chuck Berry bringing the house down with every beat that hits you right between the eyes..."SLOW DEATH", call the doctor for some medication for the fever..."FALL IN PLACE", can't hide from the eye of heaven..."LOUD MUSIC", there's a forty dollar fine down the Rock Island Line for loud music..."THE WEBB WILDER CREDO", real music is out there and real people are makin' it..."HONKY TONK HELL", two many stories I can't tell, too much loss of memory..."I AIN'T LIVING LONG LIKE THIS", don't let 'em take you downtown..."CARRYIN' THE NEWS TO MARY", got to take a look see, to see what I just saw..."NO GREAT SHAKES", close but no cigar, if I tag along will you think I'm playin' dumb..."HOW LONG CAN SHE LAST (GOING FAST)", how long can rock n roll music last playin' that fast..."HORROR HAYRIDE", with shades of "The Ventures" early years..."ONE TASTE OF THE BAIT", can't forget how good she looks, the look is worth the pain of the hook...wild, cool and swingin'...can you dig it?

Hats off to my good friend Bryon Davis (producer) and his co-producers Cary E. Mansfield, R.S. Field and of course Varese Records and our man on the rock and roll caravan of Wilderian liberation...Webb Wilder (wear glasses if you need 'em) created a solid album that harked back to the roots of rock.

5 out of 5 stars Eric in a 'Mellow Mood'.......2006-01-26

Normally when I think of Eric Marienthal I think of the spicy, electrifying, and wild `jamming' Alto Sax player. This project took me to a different side of Eric and a pleasing one at that. I know Eric has a lot of energy, but this project puts him in a `Mellow Mood.' It is truly a nice Jazz background mellow project. I almost call it Eric plays the favorites and plays it safe. He is not trying to out do the originals, he does them. When listening to `New York State of Mind' I envision with a smile, Carmen McRae's 1980 rendition of this Billy Joel classic with Freddie Hubbard doing the monster Trumpet solo. The same can be said of James Moody's 'Moody's Mood for Love', as Eric plays one imagines the vocals of King Pleasure or Eddie Jefferson saying "James Moody you can blow now if you want to" (there I go talking out of my head again). The efforts on Les McCann's `Compared to What' and the Bee Gee's `Emotion' are done with a nice jazzy flow. I like this side of Eric as he finds himself in a 'Mellow Mood' and he puts you into one as well. If you are looking for a laid back mellow Jazz album, the JazzeOne says: Eric has `Got you covered.' ~the JazzeOne

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-10-18

A dream project for the talented saxophone aficionado... Inspired by the desire for change, he lined up some of the finest players and recorded GOT YOU COVERED live in the studio. "The great thing about recording live is that the music has a great energy and connection that you just can't get when you build a record a piece at a time. The scary thing is that you don't really know what you're going to end up with until after you've done it." To our ears, the finished project is fun, spontaneous and filled with a fantastic variety of jazz; from smooth to straight ahead. Primarily acoustic, GOT YOU COVERED is a cover album (hence the title) starring great players the likes of Russell Ferrante, Peter Erskine, Luis Conte, Chick Corea and Russ Freeman (Rippingtons - Eric's current gig). The covers include warm, rich versions of standards like "I've Got The World On A String," "Moody's Mood For Love," and "My One & Only" (recorded with Chick Corea as a duet in ONE take!). Plus a potpourri of other styles of music from the Gipsy Kings "Love & Liberte" to Carol King's "You've Got A Friend," to the BeeGees, "Emotion," and a stunning version of Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind." Marienthal has been an integral part of the Smooth Jazz genre since it's inception, performing and recording with a who's who of artists over the years. GOT YOU COVERED is a sweet assortment of tasty, tasty tunes that come highly recommended by your friends here at [...]! ~SANDY SHORE

4 out of 5 stars Hard Rocking Blues!.......2002-08-03

The sound of this CD is a little reminiscent of Gov't Mule both in the vocals of John Jaworowicz and in the guitar solo's. The Co-Op itself features a host of guests including, Gov't Mule's Warren Haynes on guitar, Jimmy Nalls and Jack Pearson both from the Gregg Allman Band on guitar, Willie Howse from the Greg Allman band on harp, Willie Dixon's drummer, Chucki Bruke and Billy Earheart from the Amazing Rhythm Aces on organ. All of the songs on the CD, except Willie Dixon's "Back Door Man", were written or cowritten by Jaworowicz. Unfortunately, Jaworowitcz passed away shortly after the CD was released and Jimmy Nalls is currently battling Parkinson's disease. Therefore, a follow up CD reuniting this talent will not occur. Overall, the songs represented here are good rockin' blues from the land of Muscle Shoals. Highlights are "Muddy Water Fever" and "Shake You Down". No slow dancing allowed.

It's ironic that while Unsane's debut release, Total Destruction, chose to keep their tribal noise grindings fully intact and raw, when they dropped back to indie they added elements to make their music slightly more accessible. That's not to say Scattered, Smothered & Covered is any less visceral than their previous releases, but if their earlier work hacked into the listener's skull like a rusty saw, this one slices cleanly with a more refined, razor-sharp precision. You don't bleed any less, it's just slightly less painful. Gone is the incessant, driving tribal beat that their original drummer, Charlie Ondras (who died of a heroin overdose), made an Unsane trademark. His replacement, Vinnie Signorelli, provides a more standard rock-oriented thump that makes some of the tunes downright groovy. Were it not for all of the distortion the bass, guitar, and vocals are pushed through, Scattered, Smothered & Covered might actually find some FM radio success. Unsane, however, is nowhere near ready to compromise the extreme, bleak noise rock they've gnashed out since 1991. Still, this tightening of their sound is a great step forward for a band that seemed to have reached a musical dead end, and it'll surely prove that they're more than one-dimensional distortion-mongers. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars This record will blow your brains out your a**!.......2005-05-17

I remember when I first discovered Unsane years ago...it was the album cover photo on "Total Destruction" that lured me in like a fish on a hook. Something about a blood splattered Cadillac got by juices flowing, and made me purchase an album totally blind. And I've never regretted it since. "Total Destruction" was a great record, but "Scattered, Smothered, & Covered" raised the bar another momentous notch. This album is a masterpiece of heavy, hard, pounding rock that beats into your head like a sledgehammer...with the tempo of early Helmet, and the intensity of the Melvins. Spencer is a real musician, and his songwriting really peaked on this release. There is just enough complexity to keep you listening from start to finish, and enough driving force to keep your adrenalin boiling the whole way. This is THE record you need to crank up lound, hold on tight, rattle the windows, and scare the neighbors. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Noise Rock, Not Noise.......2005-04-09

Noise rock is also one of my most favorite genres. Stuff by artists like Today Is The Day, Neurosis, Helmet, and definitely, Unsane. This album is out of print, but you can still get the best-of CD, "Lambhouse", in stores around (not Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart sucks ass.). This CD has all the classics. "Alleged", "Blew", and the all out famous "Scrape". Remember the music video with all those skateboarders crashing and scraping themselves? That's the video for "Scrape", people. If you can find it, buy it. That is all.

5 out of 5 stars A pioneering work of noise sculpture.......2004-11-21

Nowadays everyone and their brother is mixing and matching heavy-music among the first and best practicioners of the art. While Unsane's raw, scathing aggression may have screamed "hardcore" upon first listen, there are few if any similarities between these guys and lowbrow one-note "tough guy" hardcore bands like Hatebreed. In fact, the noisy, dissonant tension in Chris Spencer's guitar and the intricacy of Vincent Signorelli's drum assault clearly position Scattered, Smothered, and Covered as a forerunner to the noisecore genre that's so prevalent in heavy music today. The parallels may not be obvious at first, but listen to some Botch, Coalesce, or Burnt by the Sun right after hearing this album and the similarities become clear. Loosely structured, oppressively atmospheric noise may be all the rage these days thanks to the above-mentioned bands (and several others), but Unsane were doing it earlier.

Really, though, what makes this album an undying classic is the emotion these guys so clearly put into what they were doing. Now, when I say "emotion," I am most definitely NOT referring the prepackaged saccharine pumped out by every lame nu-metal and wuss-rock band on the airwaves these days. Rather, Unsane channelled all of their frustration and disaffection into creating some of the most compellingly demented music ever recorded, propelled by a succession of punishing rhythms and throat-ripping screams. Much like its equally brilliant followup, Occupational Hazard, Scattered, Smothered, and Covered is a sort of mood music for psychopaths. It's heavy, it's passionate, and it's technical: what more could you want?

5 out of 5 stars this album rules so hard.......2003-09-06

i've listened to it over and over about a bazillion times and it never gets old. i can't say enough good things about this band. it's catchy, groovy, heavy, ...it's just AWESOME. any fan of anything should get this album and listen to it religiously everyday because it rules. ... if you've heard the song scrape and liked it, buy all their albums because the rest is just as good.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums all time-period........2003-01-18

im not much into hardcore, but this,oh my god,its unreal.every song is just pure rock.id call them an extremely [mad],angry, and louder version of helmet.chris does a great job on vox;its nice to see some real low budget stage type vocals.the guitar work by chris tops the show.he is unbelieveable.dave currans bass cant be ignored as it drove the cd along with vinny's drums.gotta love the italian drummer.i know this was unsanes attempt at a more "commercial" record (what a way to do it,huh).the video for scrape was great.in my humble opinion,YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT THIS CD!A MUST HAVE FOR ANY FAN OF GREAT MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome " Sing along out loud" album.......2007-05-27

I LOVE every song on Covered and Uncovered. That's hard to find in most artist, but this combination brings about such a varity. "Tonight" makes you feel like really two-stepping in sync with someone,, even if you don't really love them!! And "Figure It Out" is the new married woman's anthem for time to herself.... COVERED gives me the time during my morning worship to really praise the LORD and say that I am thankful for everything. I sing OUT LOUD in my car on my commute, and I know other people think I am Crazy!!!!! These are two tremendous voices, together in Love with each other and above all, GOD. I can't wait to see what's next.. Maybe a Christmas album??????????? But you will NOT be disappointed with this one!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Anointed.......2007-01-19

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! Figure It Out on the first disc and I Give You My Praise on the second disc are my favorites. As a married women I can relate to Figure It Out, it is okay to want "ME" time when things are going great in your marriage. Kenny & Chante voice still sound awesome and smooth. BUY THIS ONE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars pleasant suprise!!!.......2007-01-19

i've been up under their noses the whole time they recorded this project and i am still surprised with how well it turned out. taking a such a controversial step and doing a double disc, the other half being gospel, you have to come with it... and they did. of course working with fred hammond is pretty much a guaranteed "W". don't sleep on this. my favorite song is "here on earth". lol!

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes obscure but genuinely brilliant!.......2005-03-04

The hype about this album does nothing at all to cover the sheer brilliance of its contents. It kicks off with a bizarre country stlye take on lust for life and encompases favourites from almost every decade from the 60s onwards. From tracks made (almost) famous in the charts - see track 8 by Tiga and one by Kelly Osbourne - to the barely recognisable such as the version of "Yellow Submarine" by the brilliant Roots Manuva, this album brings surprise after surprise. And not a boring re-hash among them, every track is refreshingly different from the original! A must-buy for everyone.
