A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The Music are nothing if not confounding. Their second album, Welcome to the North would, based on its title alone, suggest that this quartet wear their Northern England roots on their sleeve. But rather than producing yet another tired Oasis or Stone Roses pastiche, the Music decamped to the distinctly un-Northern town of Atlanta, Georgia to work with renowned rock producer Brendan O'Brien (best known for working with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden). The results are thrilling--an over-the-top, bombastic album that often manages to combine the rock power of Led Zeppelin with the epic psychedelia of Jane's Addiction (helped by frontman Robert Harvey's vocal similarities to Perry Farrell and drummer Phil Jordan's breakneck drumming, reminiscent of Stephen Perkins). And though the lyrics occasionally venture into pretension (really, who says "mine eyes" anymore?), they're made forgivable by the power of tracks like "Freedom Fighters" and "Bleed from Within" (which even boasts a drum solo). In fact, the only outright homage to their Northern indie heritage is "I Need Love", with a danceable, New Order-esque bassline that drives the whole thing along. But generally, they stick to their guns instead of their roots, making Welcome to the North a great rock album. --Robert Burrow

Some good The Mars Volta influenced rock songs, but they're pretty mindless - 3.5 stars.......2005-12-29

"Welcome To The North" has some obvious standouts, but the fact is these songs really aren't that interesting longterm. You will recognize their catchiness, but chances are you aren't going to be listening to them on a regular basis. The singer strikingly resembles the one from The Mars Volta, although I'm not 100% sure if they were influenced by that band (their album, "De-Loused In The Comatorium", is infinitely more creative). The lyrics are also pretty bad, although easy to sing a long to (see "Welcome To The North" and "Freedom Fighters"). There are about 6 good-to-ok songs on the album, with the rest being filler, and honestly you won't really care if you own this album or not. Sure some songs are cool for a bit, but they're pretty generic in that regard. Buy it if you have extra cash and no better album to get (although it's a decent purchase if you're looking for some dancy-yet-hard-rockin' tunes).

With a name like "The Music", and such simplistic album packaging, it might be easy to dismiss these guys as just another faceless, generic band. Add to that the fact that they fall under the "brit rock" label, which normally connotes a lackluster Coldplay or Radiohead ripoff, and one could fully expect the musical equivalent of a product from Sam's Club. However, that is far from being the case here. The Music are one of the most talented and distinctive rock bands out there today, and "Welcome to the North" is easily one of the most infectious albums I've heard lately.

Rather than drawing from the typical aforementioned brit rock influences, these guys draw more inspiration from classic rock bands, such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and even Rush. There is somewhat of an artistic element to their music, but more than anything, these guys just want to rock out and have fun. The guitarist is brilliant at writing memorable melodic hooks, and drummer Phil Jordan pounds the skins with hard groove power to rival John Bonham. Frontman Rob Harvey has a really cool and distinctive voice, sounding a bit like a British Geddy Lee. Musically, these guys are super-tight, with a great balance of sonic rawness and technical sophistication. They sound as though they could have come straight out of the 70's, and yet at the same time don't sound the least bit retro or dated. Quite an accomplishment, I'd say.

The album starts off with the title track, rife with melodic brit-rocky goodness. "Cessation", and "I Need Love" are fast and catchy (and the former also features both bass and drum solos, which are pretty sweet), "Bleed from Within" and "One Way in, No Way Out" have sort of an epic, Led Zeppelin feel. "Breakin" is the leading single, which is just super-fun pop. "Fight the Feeling" is an excellent ballad, and "Guide" and "Open Your Mind" are killer melodic rock (the latter has sort of a U2 vibe).

The best song of the album, without a doubt, is "Into the Night". I cannot describe this song as anything more than pure brit rock perfection. This is easily one of my favorite songs these days. Everyone should hear it at least once before they die.

The album also features a hidden track, which is all instrumental. It's roughly 6 minutes in length, and features stellar musicianship, and excellent buildup. It really ends the album with a punch.

So, do not be fooled by the deceptively generic facade of this band. "Welcome to the North" is one of the best rock albums of the past year, and you can't afford to pass if up. If you're a music fan, you'll be a Music fan for sure.

If you were to combine Rush with the danceable beat of New Order this CD is what it would sound like. The band gave itself a title that was basic, but said what the group is about: The Music. Working with the producer of groups such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, this band combines classic hard rock with a funky new wave twist. A lot of people have said that this band is the next Rush and that the lead singer sounds like Perry Farrell of Janes Addiction. I definetly hear Rush (1974-1981, the mid 80's to nineties Rush sounded too commercial), but vocally I am thinking John Anderson of Yes. Still this band like Muse is one that will be talked about for a long time.

One step forward, one and a half steps back........2005-07-15

One of the few times I ever bought a CD based on singles alone was The Music's self titled debut. At 10 bucks, the price was right, and they had *something* going on there.

I love it when I'm right.

This second offering from The Music suffers from unrealistic expectations, I think. We all expected something better than their debut - that's a tall order (Imagine AC/DC being asked to make a better party album than Back in Black). On that premise alone, this CD can't score a 5 - I wanted this album to knock me off my feet and into next week.

Some tunes are all there. Others are not. The title track leaves something to be desired in my opinion, and likewise Freedom Fighters. Following those two tracks there are some excellent tunes, but split by a relative clunker, Cessation. Cessation is a perfect example of something that went wrong here. The band doesn't seem to take the time to develop any musical tension in any of their up-tempo tunes. This is unfortunate because, as tracks like "Float" and The "Truth is No Words" showed us previously, they are quite good at doing that kind of thing.

"Cessation" starts off with one of the fastest beats you're likely to hear off a dancefloor, and there is no sign that the group is building to anything. As anyone past puberty could tell you, you need to have a climax for it to be truly good. Other tracks that have the same criticism are "One Way In, One Way Out," and "I Need Love." The band may be experimenting with a dropoff in intensity on these two tracks named - the intros are the roughest bits of these songs - but there is no culmination such as in "Open Your Mind" or "Fight the Feeling."

A somewhat more mature sound permeates the parts of the CD not already discussed. I particularly like how Rob Harvey's vocals are often another instrument - that's why I forgive the lyrics, and likely always will.

In my opinion, an excellent CD marred by a missing touch of that je-ne-sais-pas-quoi (trans: I don't know what) and overly unrealistic expecations of the consumers.

Alot of promise in this band that shows alot stronger in their debut. You can still sense it here. I think this could be the new U2 here - the band that people in their teens now will look on in 20 years and say "they're still making music? that's *good*?!?"

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

Okay, they have what may be the most boring name in all of rock-dom. But the Music do better in their sophomore album than in their self-titled debut, tightening up their music and losing the Led Zepplin-wannabe sound in favor of more dancerock. "Welcome to the North" is a bombastic rocker with heart.

"Where I'm from/Is not who, who I am," is the rather generic opener to the title track, a roaring rocker that blossoms from a slow riff. Well, it's not really about the songwriting -- it's actually about how it's sung. Lead singer Robert Harvey really stretches his voice as he shouts "Welcome to the NOOORTTH!", sounding as if he's gesturing at a panoramic view of north Britain. Instead of the jaded mumbles of many alt-rockers now, Harvey throws his heart, soul, and vocal chords into each song.

Their catchy brand of rock goes heavy on the electric guitars, grinding bass and smashin' percussion -- at times you can hear bands like Led Zeppelin, New Order and Rush mixed in there, but fortunately not so heavily that it feels derivative. A particular bonus is the rippling guitar in "Into The Night" -- that's what makes a good band.

They keep the sound catchy, but stray into ballads once or twice -- although only the flowing, exquisite "Fight the Feeling" could be strictly described as a ballad. What's more, bad singer could not depend on the music to cover his flaws in the ballads -- and Harvey proves that he's very good.

The Music do pretty well in their sophomore album -- their gusto keep them from sounding generic or cliched. They have the guts, the youth and the energy -- now all they need is the polish to go with it. Some of their riffs and basslines can be repetitive, and their songwriting definitely needs a boost up. Yes, the songs are catchy, but they're also very generic.

This fiery young band has the excellent lead singer and good musicianship that it needs to be huge -- all they need is some polish-ups, and a songwriter to match their guitar playing.

1958's South Seas Adventure was the fifth & last in a series of full-length documentaries designed especially for the 3-camera / 3-projector Cinerama technology. The Cinerama Adventure was a new type of film that traded in big-name stars & plot in an attempt to give the audience a virtual reality-type experience, in this case, a trip in the South Seas.
