4 out of 5 stars Legendary Instrumentalists.......2007-01-19

Along with the Surfaris, somebody might argue that the Chantays were at their very Best doing instrumentals. Most notably, the classic Iconic Surf anthem "Pipeline". This was true at the time they made this album where they too tried to do vocal numbers. I think they were under pressure to do another album as a follow-up to their monster hit "Pipeline". The problem was I think that they weren't really ready vocally for this, although they had nice but probably untrained voices. The big push for all of these groups was to go vocal like the "Beach Boys" and "Jan & Dean" who were selling a lot of records. From what I could hear, if given time I think they would have developed into something really special. But, it was not to be. What we have here is both of their two albums and there is some really good stuff in addition to the big hit "Pipeline". I am glad I got this set, and I'm really happy that it has been re-mastered to digital format for modern listening. Their albums are really hard to find if your looking for original LP's in good playing condition(and expensive)I have the Pipeline album I got on E Bay and paid top dollar. Here's a better alternative. I got the chance to see them play a few years ago at the Orange County Fair and consider myself lucky, they still rock!

4 out of 5 stars Should have only shown their best side.......2006-09-03

The Chantays were just a handful of kids when they recorded some of the best surf guitar licks of all time. The title track "Pipeline" is a legend for good reason, as theirs is probably the best recording ever of this often-covered classic. There are other tracks on this that deserve equal recognition, including "El Conquistator," "Continental Missile," and the great instrumental cover of the Johnny Cash classic "Riders in the Sky."

The only real problem with this double-album is the first half of the first album, "Two Sides of the Chantays." Supposedly their "two sides" are surf guitar, and some sort of vocal original rock schmaltz...but believe me, they only have one side. As long as they don't sing, the Chantays are great...but most listeners will find themselves skipping through the first quarter of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best known surf tune and in great stereo........1998-09-08

No surf music fan should be without this double cd. Perhaps the most famous riff in surf music and one of the most perfect his tunes. The Chantays were there and are still around today still riding the waves of surf music. If you have just one surf album this should do it. George Feist aka THE DUKE OF THE DISCS...FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

Product Description

In three short years singer/songwriter LeRoy Bell has built a reputation and a national fan base that eagerly awaits the release of his first full length CD, TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY. A year in the making, TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY delivers poignant songs of peace, passion, politics, lament, love and deceit. The bountiful 14 tracks of TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY reflect LeRoys visions, past hopes and future promises told from the multiple perspectives of life. TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY brings to light social issues, concerns, and compassion for everyone. With the hopes of youth, love, lost love, and optimism for humanity, Bell speaks through his personal observations and musical lyricism. Written by LeRoy Bell over the past two and a half years, the social parallels can be drawn by the listener. The sonic stratification of multiple guitars, strings, percussion and bass, provide the lush layers and textures that allow Bells earthy, soulful voice to whisper and soar with emotion. The honesty of his voice and lyrics makes you feel as if each song is being sung directly to each listener. Also featured on TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY are His Only Friends, Bells trusty band of veteran musicians. The soaring cello played by Phil Peterson is a familiar element in LeRoys non-traditional sound. Guitar virtuoso Rick Novito adds an uncommon approach to texture and lyrical statements ranging from folk to jazz & rock. The heartbeat of the music is the dynamic, funky bass of Terry Morgan, paired with incredibly rhythmic pulsations of LeRoy Bell on drums, guitar, banjo, accordion and miscellaneous percussion. Multi-cultural percussionist Stan White adds a world beat perspective to Bells impassioned vocals and melodies, completing the sound. This knack for artful songwriting has a vivid history. As half of the youthful songwriting team Bell & James , Casey James and LeRoy Bell are the authors of Elton John's Grammy-nominated 1979 Top Ten hit, "Mama Can't Buy You Love," and Eltons 2004 #1 British single Are You Ready For Love. Bell and James also attained top ten status with the dance hit, Livin It Up Friday Night. For LeRoy writing became the main focus over performing allowing him to collaborate with legendary songwriter/producer Thom Bell (his uncle) and Casey James penning songs for The Spinners, The OJays, Rita Marley, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Phyllis Hyman and many more. Only recently has LeRoy surfaced as the singer/songwriter he is today. Gaining early acceptance and warm reception, he has recently performed with B.B. King, Al Green, Taj Mahal, Jackie Greene, Keb Mo, LeAnn Rimes, The Temptations, The OJays, Mavis Staples, Colin Hay, Leon Russell, Sonny Landreth, Kenny Loggins, The Young Dubliners, and others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artist Fabulous Songs!.......2007-01-04

this is a great CD of brilliant songs from a first class songwriter,
I am surprised that Leroy Bell is not better known as this is hot stuff and what a voice !!.
buy this and his first cd you will enjoy a lot !

4 out of 5 stars Good!.......2007-01-03

I had never heard of this performer. I was introduced to him on my cable adult alternative channel and couldn't get the song "Voodoo" out of my head! The rest of the album is just as catchy. I didn't realize how many performers Mr. Bell had written songs for either. He's a talented dude! I thoroughly enjoy his music!

5 out of 5 stars Both sides of this story are great........2006-10-30

This is an amazing CD. I went to a concert where LeRoy Bell was the opening act. I had never heard him before. I wish he had been the main act. After hearing him I had to get the CD. It is very good!

5 out of 5 stars Right where he belongs.......2006-10-28

I never heard of him before, but the geniuses that figured out this marketing system really pulled this one out for me. This CD is one of the best singer/songwriter CD's of the year, no doubt. Very listenable in that you can hear his lyric and get "caught" by the melody. "Voodoo" sounds like he wrote it for Carlos Santana and he gives it that feel.

The lyric will touch you and inspire. "20 years from now" is so on the money, I have trouble holding it together cause he is so true. He's been there with all of us and he right where he belongs.

4 out of 5 stars Good not great.......2006-07-30

This cd is growing on me. However, Bell sometimes too much like Seal for me. But his writing is excellent. Sometimes political, mostly quite intimate and personal.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a note about Musical Shapes............2005-12-17

This reissue, for me, is notable for the second album. Musical Shapes is the great lost Rockpile country album- excellent Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds/Billy Bremmer stuff with Carlene's tough girl vocals. Two Sides is indeed an excellent album, but for my money, Musical Shapes is the gem in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars a superb twofer from a perhaps overlooked artist..........2005-11-01

Carlene Carter is perhaps best known for her ties to June Carter and Johnny Cash. June was Carlene's mother, and Johnny Cash would later go on to become Carlene's stepfather. Carlene has also been notorious for her troubled, hard-living personal life. She had some major commercial success with her early '90s comeback, but her excellent early work seems to have been badly overlooked.

In October of 2005, Wounded Bird Records reissued Carlene Carter's first four albums. Seemingly to make them more appealing, they released twofers instead of each album on a single CD. However, being the sly marketers that they are, Wounded Bird clearly took into account that there has previously been a CD released that paired her 3rd and 4th albums, "Musical Shapes" and "Blue Nun" respectively, onto a single CD. So, what they have done is paired her 1st and 4th albums onto one disc, and paired her 2nd album "Two Sides to Every Woman" with 1980's "Musical Shapes". (It's fortunate that Wounded Bird didn't pair "Two Sides..." with 1981's weak "Blue Nun".)

Anyway you look at it, this pairing of "Two Sides to Every Woman" and "Musical Shapes" makes for a CD that contains a wealth of great music. In particular, 1979's "Two Sides to Every Woman" is real stunner that can't be missed if you take country-flavored rock & roll seriously--it's a little-known classic that puts the likes of such future "country rockers" as Shania Twain to absolute shame. Not only does it happen to have one of the sexiest album covers of all time, but Carlene clearly upped the ante from her debut, and "Two Sides..." simply kicks ass all over the place--it's got the stomping "Swap Meat Rag"; the raging uptempo rocker "Lies" (written by Roger Troy & Nick Gravenites); the haunting minor-keyed ballad "Gold Hearted Lady"; and the roaring, ultra-catchy title track which sounds kind of like a disco-rocker with its catchy beat and string arrangement, but it rocks out devastatingly and has an infectious, impassioned Carlene vocal. The album also has the fun, lighthearted, rolling pop-rocker "Do It In A Heartbeat"; the sassy, riffy country-rocker "One Good Lover"; the memorable, tender and reflective "Old Photographs"; and the fine ballad "It's No Wonder (Why I Love Him)". The closing track is a version of the Elvis Costello composition "Radio Sweetheart" which has one of those damn endlessly-repeated fadeouts so characteristic of early Costello, but at least in this case it serves as a respectable 'anthemic' finale to the album.

"Musical Shapes" isn't as exciting overall, but it's by no means less than respectable, and it has such moments as the album opening one-two punch of "Cry" and "Madness"; the venomous "Too Bad About Sandy"; and the highly catchy rockabilly-flavored "The Very First Kiss".

"Two Sides to Every Woman" hasn't been released officially on CD prior to this, and it's an absolute must for any serious listener, containing some of the hardest-rocking country music you could imagine. Adding "Musical Shapes" makes this CD even more valuable. Overall, a superb twofer.

Album Description

Super talented heavy rock guitarist Vivian Campbell burst onto the Irish rock scene in a band called Sweet Savage. Soon thereafter in 1982 Ronnie James Dio recruited the young prodigy as the lead guitarist for the then brand new band Dio, and Vivian is featured on the first three legendary Dio albums. Via stints in David Coverdale's Whitesnake and Lou Gramm's Shadow King, Vivian joined mega band Def Leppard in 1992 and remains one of the 2 lead guitarists of Def Leppard, touring and recording with them to this day. A long time fan of the blues, Vivian Campbell was determined to one day record his interpretations of great American blues songs. In April 2005, Vivian and 5 fellow musicians, including the great drummer Terry Bozzio (Mothers Of Invention, Missing Persons), recorded this great electric blues album. Two Sides Of If features classics originally recorded by blues legends like Muddy Waters, Albert King and Robert Johnson as well as songs from the likes of Rory Gallagher and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. The album closes with an original by ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and last but not least the great Joan Osborne performs sizzling lead vocals on a great cover of Howlin' Wolf's classic song "Spoonful."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this CD.......2006-12-10

... but I don't. And it's a shame, given Campbell's former talents. Take his passionate, melodic shredding in Dio, factor in his potential to escape the grasp of mainstream metal with 1990's "Riverdogs," then lose all hope as he joins Def Leppard and takes a backseat to Phil Collen. (My congrats to Campbell for climbing the rock 'n' roll corporate ladder and retaining the title of "guitar player" minus the usual responsibilities associated therewith).

I'd have to say that "Spoonful" is the only righteous tune on this "guitar is my hobby now" release, thanks entirely to Joan Osborne's kickass vocal. Too bad Campbell doesn't back up Osborne by burning up the fretboard with his fingers (like he used to do, you know, back in the good old days). Instead, he insists on showing off his barely adequate slide playing skills. My advice? Go back to the boardroom. Play some golf. Keep singing along with Bon Jovi in the shower (that is who you're trying to sound like, right?) ... who knows ... you might be a star again someday.

4 out of 5 stars Way to go Viv!.......2006-11-23

First off, I don't need to know the blues to know when I hear good music. You can say all you want but Vivian Campbell is a great guitar player and even though I don't know how the original recordings sound, I don't care. What I got was a CD that I enjoyed listening too at work and at home.

As far as his voice, it does take an adjustment but to be honest I love it! The blues are gritty and raw sometimes and considering he recorded the album in just 3 days you get a good feel for the energy.

I'm glad this CD is part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Who decides?.......2006-01-23

Who decides what Vivian likes? I find it humorous that the reviewers that gave this CD a poor review are stating what Vivian is. I could have sworn that Vivian decides what he is and what he likes. If Vivian says he likes blues, then let him play the blues. I guess that is the advantage of being somebody that is somebody or compared to just another pickle laying in the gutter wishing they could play guitar or sing (like a few reviewers I have read about).

1 out of 5 stars Vivian is out of his element--total waste of money.......2005-12-22

I wish I had seen the previous two reviews before buying this CD--I totally agree with them. It's obvious Vivian is a guitar player, not a singer. This "producer" that encouraged him to record a blues album as told in the liner notes is crazy. He has great tone in his guitar, and his respect for blues music is evident by his restraint in his playing, but this is clearly not his forte--shredding is. He displays a solid vibrato in his soloing, but apart from that his blues guitar work is nothing special. And his vocal style is no good at all, especially for blues. Vivian is a great guitar player, but he needs to stick to what he does best--shredding with Def Leppard--sorry, Vivian.

2 out of 5 stars I agree...boring!.......2005-12-15

First off, let me say that I have admired viv's playing since his Dio days. He is truly a gifted player. However, I don't understand the praise that is being thrown at this album. Yes, the backing band is excellent. In fact, the backing band is about the only redeeming quality of this album. I think what I find most annoying about this album are the vocals. People describe them as gritty, or soulful, but I just don't see it. His voice is thin and unconvincing and not at all bluesy. Further, he pronounces the words in that 80s hair metal style, similar to John Bon Jovi. the guitar tone that he uses on the first five or six tracks sounds just like the tone that he used on the dio albums 20 years ago which would be fine if he was redoing "Holy Diver", but not when covering willie Dickson. The tone does improve as the album moves along with the tone on "Reconsider Baby" being absolutely stellar, but even then his wispy vocals ruin it. The album as a whole comes across as being emotionless, almost like a glass of warm milk, which is never what you want in a bluesy record. I agree with the other reviewer that Dave Meniketti's "On the blue Side" is a far better choice if you are looking for a blues rock album.

1 out of 5 stars Not exactly Hogs!.......2007-05-07

As a huge fan of McPhee's Groundhogs I took a chance on this one. Don't buy it if you want Hogs sound. By two sides, Tony is talking his blues side, and his progressive synth side. The instrumental 'Take it Out' is the highlight of the 5 blues songs. The rest of it is 19 minute epic 'the hunt'. Much of it is spoken. All of it is synth music from one of the greatest quitarists ever. His synth music does not at all match his guitar ability. It appears most people that like 'the hunt' are into its deep lyrics. I'm more into a good tune and great guitar playing. This is neither. Curiosity and love of a lot of the Groundhogs material made me buy this one. Wish I hadn't honestly. Jerry.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Profound!.......2005-07-13

I can't believe no one else has yet reviewed this album! First, some background: Back in the mid- to late- 70s, we had a phenomenal radio station here in San Antonio (Texas, USA) called KISS. It's still around now, but unfortunately has completely sold out to format radio. At that time, it was totally album-oriented, no format. There was a really cool dj named Joe Anthony who introduced lots of artists to us, some of them quite obscure.

Joe Anthony was largely responsible for many bands making it - in some cases, like Scorpions & Judas Priest, making it big; in other cases, like Budgie & Legs Diamond, they made it big in San Antonio while being virtually unknown everywhere else. These bands would fill huge auditoriums here in SA, which at that time was known as the hard rock capital of the world, thanks to Joe.

Anyway, Joe (and another dj, Lou Roney) used to play 'The Hunt' (one entire album side of Two Sides) frequently, and it became a cult classic! Many times, my friends and I would be partying and the song would come on, and it inspired lots of deep philosophical discussion! You must understand that this was not just a SONG, but an EXPERIENCE! It became a QUEST to try to find the album, because by this time (1976) it was already out of print and nowhere to be found!

I had a list of albums I was looking for, and The 2 Sides of TS McPhee was at the TOP of my list!

A couple of years later, I requested it at a used record store that specialized in out-of-print stuff. They were very impressed at my taste, and also my being female, since most 18-year-old girls were not usually interested in music like that - it was usually the guys who were collectors. So, this request gained me some respect from the local record industry!

They did find me a copy, and I gladly forked over the $50 for the album! It was one of my most treasured items in my 2000+ collection!

I tell you this story, so that you will appreciate just how lucky you are, that this classic is now available on cd! so you don't have to go thru what we went thru to get it!

OK, so what makes this album so special that it was the most sought-after album in the late 70s? Well, quite simply, 'The Hunt' which was an entire album side of the vinyl. There is nothing else like it! Very distinctive sound; experimental, electronic...and heavy. 32 years later it still sounds great.

But most important, is the message. This is not just a song; it is a powerful, profound STATEMENT! Just check out these lyrics:

"Yelping hounds pack to form a Gorgon¹s head of gyrating tails
ready to turn a stag¹s heart to stone at a single glance.
Each dog has a pedigree that would fill a ream of paper as have their masters
      boasting generations of good breeding.
Family trees with branches laden with the names of past landed gentry, their greatest contribution to the land being when they fall in their Autumn years, providing the earth with the same humus as their mongrel serfs.
But these that are currently at the apex, clad in red to match their ruddy complexion which only the liver would disclose whether from action of the wind or reaction to the wine.
These who satisfy their blood-lust on creatures who only recognise such drive in quest for food epitomise all that is base in man.
That they are an anachronism is of no doubt, a desperate clinging to feudal systems when their families oppressed wnole communities, today they have to be content mortally oppressing a single creature.
Like well-fed cats clawing at a mouse until their instincts, not their hunger, is satisfied leaving it to decompose.
a symbol of the confused mind that is so lethal..."

That's just an excerpt. I especially like '...their greatest contribution to the land being when they fall in their Autumn years, providing the earth with the same humus as their mongrel serfs...' Whoa!

Listening to 'The Hunt' is an EXPERIENCE. It's not something you are likely to just pop in your car and rock out to - it's something you give your full attention - preferably with headphones.

The rest of the songs (the 'other side' of the vinyl and of Tony) are completely different. I'm not even gonna mention what the other side is like, because it doesn't matter. You must buy this for The Hunt.

(Unless you're a hunter, that is... or maybe ESPECIALLY if you are a hunter!)

5 out of 5 stars Not his best face, but his only truth, live and let die........2007-01-07

        My own review?
By so far,the only testimony of the deeper bright side of Moon, the Loon. A loner, not the craziest rock'n'roll performer, but almost. And the best, done with his best mates, the heavy drinkers, specially Ringo Star. Ringo's son? Zak is performing with The Who. Who else?

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad.......2006-09-26

I wonder why so many people hate this album. OK it is not the kind of record you would have thought that a serious rock musician like Keith Moon should have done. It is done in a very camp english way. OK he is horrible as a singer but I still think there are some endearing moments here. Maybe it is not the album worthy of a double extended version treatment.

        1 out of 5 stars Why???.......2006-08-23

Why re-release this travesity. I loved Keith Moon - as a drummer - but this is just plain bad. I still have the vinyl version and never listen to it. Maybe the extras are worth it, but I would never pay for this thing new.
