William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

          5 out of 5 stars Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28

So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.

In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!

Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess

The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.

One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.

The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars One More Time.......2002-03-08

Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21

Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26

This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24

It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!

this is absolutely my favorite golden earring record. layer, upon layer of sound that is always fresh. moontan is still better song for song but, this is nearly twice as long. the title track is their best song since radar love. evil love chain, the fighter, one night without you, dejavodoo, bad news to fall in love, all great songs. finishes strong with desperately trying to be different, and gambler's blues. one more thing. this is a great concept album. the best since the who's quadrophenia. they sound as if they had a blast making this. buy it and enjoy

Basically, Paradise In Distress is full of either mediocre songs or songs that are fantastic when performed live. There's a lot to listen to here, but most of it is pretty luke warm. I prefer Last Blast Of The Century because it contains version of some PID songs that blow the studio versions out of the water. Let's look at some of the tracks:

Evil Love Chain-the studio version falls flat. The Last Blast version ROCKS-it blows the studio version out of the water. I much prefer the sound of the guitar and the horns on the Last Blast version.

Paradise In Distress-a great song, but I think I slightly prefer the Last Blast version.

Deja Voodoo-not worth listening to at all. Worthless. One of their worst songs in my opinion.

Bad News To Fall In (With A Mean Mother F**ker)-a pretty good song that's not available on any live albums

Whisper In A Crowd-a great song, that's pretty much equal in quality with The Last Blast version (although I think that version once again gets a slight edge)

Desperately Trying To Be Different-this one does absolutely nothing for me.

The Fighter-The Last Blast version is much better

The Apocalypse, Darling, Fluid Conduction, and 42nd Street are all either avarega or luke warm. Take My Hand, Close My Eyes and One Night Without You I never listen to, even on Last Blast Of The Century.

Overall, there are some good songs here, but there are more average or poor tracks to be found here than there are great. The title track and Whisper In A Crowd are hands down the highlights here, but I give the slight edge to the Last Blast versions. I think you'll find that many of the songs are better on Last Blast Of The Century. Golden Earring is better live than in the studio and this album proves it.

I recommend the following GE albums:

              Last Blast Of The Century
              Bloody Buccaners
The Continuing Story Of Radar Love
Naked III (their new acoustic album)
              Millbrook USA
NEWS(espescially if you're into 80's music like me)
              Together

and if you're interested in 60's music (I'm not, personally), On The Double is their best of the decade

5 out of 5 stars You cant keep a good band down........2002-05-05

Golden Earring just keeps on coming and coming.Thank you for that.I do not know any other band that has been so consistent.
I have followed this band since I saw them opening for King Crimson in 73.Ehh I guess I should say something about the music here.It is classic GE with 2 wordsmiths(Hay and Roelfzema)and Kooymans ripping great catchy melodies.Rinus and Cesar are all over the place(in a good way),there is horns galore, soul back-up
singers and me on the couch loving every minute of it

4 out of 5 stars they still have it.......2001-06-23

Golden Earring has been my favorite rock band since I bought Moontan in 1973. I have gobbled up anything I could find since. While this latest release has grown on me, i admit it is not my favorite. So what! it is still a great disc and has some new sounds. My favorite track is probably desperately trying to be different. One complaint I have frrom this and the much superior Bloody Buccaneers Cd is that it's recorded at too high a level. It blasts at only 9 o'clock on the volume, and I have a expensive system

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Album form Golden Earring.......2000-03-27

If you are a Golden Earring fan, you know the story. These guys know how to rock. They always followed the music trends, although not so closely to be hugely popular in America. If you like Blue Oyster Cult, and Rush, then this is the album for you.
