4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much despite muted scratchy sound on last track.......2007-02-07

I gave this to my father. He was thrilled by the collection of songs. He said the last track was a little scratchy and lower volume but that the sound quality of all of the other tracks was great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-03-14

This is a great album -- a classic. If you like vintage Squeeze, then this should be your cup of tea. Not to say it sounds like a snippet from the 80's. Rather, it has a good composition with varied instruments and interesting lyrics. This is one of the few albums where I enjoy listening to every song. I've owned it for 10 yrs, so it's stood the test of time.

4 out of 5 stars Don't overlook this gem of an album.......2005-02-16

Nick Heyward has largely been dismissed by the U.S. and it doesn't really make any sense. Heyward consistently cranks out pleasant, often upbeat, multi-layered music that can't be pigeon-holed too easily. So maybe that's why the U.S. hasn't really gotten into him.
Granted, after a dynamite debut in the early 1980's with his group, Haircut 100, Heyward went off on his own and cranked out a very unremarkable (and to be honest - bubblegum sort of) album.
Fast forward to the the early 1990's. Heyward cranks out this little album - From Monday to Sunday - that could blow your socks off!
"Kite" was the song that actually got U.S. college and alternative radio play making it into the top 100 and on some lists hitting the top 40. However, good as that song is, it is certainly not alone. "January Man", "How Do you Live without Sunshine", "Caravan", "He Doesn't love you like I Do" and "Ordinary People" are each really multi-layered musically and impressive lyrically. This is NOT bubblegum pop!
Have a listen and you'll find that this is one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again without getting tired of it. It may take a few listens to really "get" it, but then I think that is indicative of any really good album.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album.......2004-08-20

Nick Heyward, formerly of Haircut 100, puts forth a fantastic solo album with some real depth and meaning to the lyrics. When I first heard Kite on the radio it was in the middle of the grunge "movement" (if you can call it such) and I was disgusted with most of what was on the radio. The only decent music was far and few between and was mostly from Britain. Upon hearing this for the first time I jumped up and had to have the whole cd. It was not release in America yet but my husband was able to get his hands on an import version for my birthday. I played it so much I was afraid I'd wear it out. It's just a fantastic cd with interesting music and thought provoking lyrics. This is one I can play over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Delicious ear candy that will keep you coming back for more!.......2003-07-02

A great album that came out at perhaps the greatest time in modern music history. Well, at least it felt that way to me, just starting out in college. I briefly heard this album at first and thought it was OK. I saw Nick perform live at the Whiskey in Hollywood and was sold. The album didn't leave my CD listening rotation for many years. But the times changed, I got older and my music tastes went down new and interesting paths. After years of collecting dust, I recently went back and heard this album again. One word: fantastic!! Bubbling over with pop goodness, this album is perfect for that summer day at the beach. Especially songs like "How Can You Live Without Sunshine" and "Mr. Plain". And what about the little hidden track at the end? "I rode away from you..." the song laments. Who knows why this didn't become a full grown-up song? Had Nick run out of creative energy at that point? Who knows, but it's satisfying in its simplicity and a great way to end the album.

3 out of 5 stars Power Pop? Brit Pop?.......2003-04-15

Nick Heyward, formally of Haircut 100, sounds as if he were still in the 80s. This is, in itself not a sin, but there is absolutely nothing that stands out on this album, it's not really bad, but it's not really good either, it just sort of lays there and begs the question: why bother? Truth is, there is no reason. I sold this baby.

WOW!!! This album is great. If you ever sang along to some of the music themes to Monday Night Football this album is for you. It is filled with quite a few older songs and not many sports themed songs. I enjoy it but I can see how some people might not enjoy the selections. Make sure you check the song titles before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Diverse offering full of laughter, love and the blues!!.......1998-12-24

This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.

I love it!! I believe you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars Lively Mozart compositions to get you going on Monday AM.......2006-10-06

My wife is a school teacher. and she already owns "Mozart for your mind," which is classical music that is supposed to help you concentrate more. This cd represents some of the more lively arrangements in the Mozart repetoire, and my wife enjoys this one, too. Actually, so do I. I am a newbie when it comes to classical music, but I am liking it more and more, and in large part to this Mozart music cd. The songs are familiar, probably from hearing them as the backdrops to animated cartoons and major motion pictures. But I enjoy these renditions by The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the English Chamber Orchestra, among others.

If you don't any classical music and you're wondering where to start, this is a good place right here.

5 out of 5 stars Music that Motivates.......2005-01-30

Phillips Classics has spawned a brilliant concept for classical music compilations. The first compilation to enter the market place was "Mozart for Your Mind", a collection of scientifically proven sonatas and overtures that actually boost the listeners IQ. In this compilation, they have presented Mozart's more buoyant and snappy tunes to quicken the pulse, motivate the spirit and inspire the brain, which the publishers have called the "Mozart effect".

Those aware of Mozart's music will recognize many of these Overtures and Sonatas, from the light and chatty Violin Sonata in A, KV. 305 to the more moody and serious Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550. Interestingly, for me, this entire compilation does exactly what it is designed to do, focusing the mind, establishing clarity after a long nights sleep, and motivating the spirit to confront the day ahead.

Most of the pieces are performed by the famous St. Martin in the Fields, conducted and arranged by Sir Neville Mariner. In no way an expert of classical music recordings, I believe even the connoisseur will find this collection performed at a level that is both rendered with sophistication and skill that Mozart intended, creating the desired effect on the ear and the mind.

If you find yourself feeling lethargic, lacking motivation or a touch on the tired side, this CD should put that much needed bounce back in your step.

4 out of 5 stars Better than 2 cups of coffee.......1999-01-05

A truly hot compilation of the most up tempo Mozart tunes. Just the ticket to get the blood moving in the a.m. Not a single downer in the bunch!

If you have ever been, or think you might ever be, a fan of the music of George Gershwin, opera, musical theatre, jazz, powerful, triumphant singing by trained African-American voices, orchestral music, historical/cultural documents layered in innovative artistry, hearing the next generation of Opera Grand Dammes and Divos before the sun also rises on their already international careers...all of this and more is to be found on this CD. One might say I'm a little biased, as my ex-fiancee/best friend (Angela Brown, Soprano) and a number of friends of mine in the business are on this CD. But you don't have to know them to love them when they sound like this.

Angela, who has one of the most powerful voices in the industry (she recently covered AIDA at the Met for an all of a sudden slightly nervous and miraculously recovered from illness [upon hearing Angela warm up on stage] Debra Voigt), sings PORGY's "My Man's Gone Now" about as well as I've ever heard her--which is by definition (trust me) better than most of the sopranos of the last century, BAR NONE...the master Greg Baker, who has done Amonasaro and John The Baptist at the Met to incredibly deserved acclaim, performs excerpts from his signatue role Crown and Porgy at the top of his game...the rich tones of Marquita Lister, whose debut as Bess in the Goetz Friedrich production of PORGY in the Theatre Des Westens of Berlin in 1993 was a shot to all established divas heard 'round the world (now singing with her on that stage at that time was FUN, let me tell you), sounds like a ringy, milk chocolate/black velvet version of the milky, white velvet Rene Fleming...Diva Harolyn Blackwell, not to be outdone, rings and soars in everything she does...

This CD would be a treat even without the introduction of BLUE MONDAY, the DNA of PORGY AND BESS work that gives us a window into the creative mind of George Gershwin, and the embryonic existence of PORGY AND BESS itself. BLUE MONDAY gives us much of the thematic material and revolutionary artistic ideas that led to Gershwin triumphantly blurring the lines separating grand Musical Theatre in the tradition of Jerome Kern (think SHOWBOAT) from the high art of Wagnerian/Verdian/Russian Opera with PORGY; influencing everyone from Richard Rogers to Leonard Bernstein to Stephen Sondheim in American composition thereafter. BLUE MONDAY, in its simple, deceptive beauty (with parts sung immaculately by Angela and Marquita) gives you the clue to just how powerfully Gershwin planned to shake up the world with the debut of PORGY and BESS in 1935--and did.

And can you even imagine how it feels to hear the voice of Cab Calloway, linking every conceivable strand of High African-American music, American musical theatre, American opera and Jazz of the 20th century together with every word he says? Could there have been a better Sportin' Life? (Gershwin actually wrote the part of Sportin' Life in PORGY both for and based on the personality and artistry of Calloway--the friend of Ellington and biggest influence on the music and personality of Dizzy Gillespie--while he played in Harlem's Cotton Club in the 1930's.)

But this CD is not a Museum piece made for music academics or an excuse for me and others in the business to party with singer friends (I don't need this good an excuse for that!). This is absolutely beautiful music that will sweeten your home and soul on the first hearing.

This could easily be like Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE for all enthusiasts of good music who (smartly) don't lay claim to liking, being an "expert" of or sticking to one particular style. Just as anyone who kind of likes any of the jazz they've heard loves KIND OF BLUE, if you have ever heard strong American music sung with powerful American voices over a tight orchestra, but had too much fun listening to it to call it "opera", you will love this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2006-03-07

Jay Gordon is the master of the remix and he proved that with the first single of Candy@$$...The Green Velvet Stitches remix, while not the focalpoint of the single, is the best feature. The riff is brutal and the repeating of "loving you is, f'ing you is strange" is (while I've said before the repeating of vulgar lyrics is 'forgivable') brilliant...I can't explain it, it's just brilliant. The club 69 remixes of Blue Monday are better than the Optical vocal remix, but the DJ Dan remix is the best. The original is great, don't get me wrong, but these remixes add so much flare it's undeniable how awsome they are!

3 out of 5 stars Nothing beats the original version.......2004-01-10

I confess...I like Orgy's version of the New Order classic "Blue Monday". I like that booming techno/industrial sound that the group gives to the '80s classic. Still nothing beats the original version which is vastly superior to Orgy's rendition. I bought this single a few years ago because I had no desire to buy the entire album. It is just as well because the follow up single to "Blue Monday" sucked big time. Although I do like Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday", I thought (and still do) that the remixes on the single were pretty terrible, except for the Club 69 remix but otherwise I didn't like the rest of the remixes. "Blue Monday" does not sound good as a drum and bass song which you can hear on the Optical Vocal mix. Secondly including the Green Velvet mix of "Stitches" was pointless and also sounded terrible. I don't care for dub remixes. They just bore me. Other than the single mix, the only remix I really did like was Club 69 and that is because Club 69 didn't try to re-work the song completely like drum & bass artist (or group) Optical.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the 'Stitches' single, that's for sure.......2001-08-06

I'm in a good mood right now, so I'm not going to be as critical of the 'Blue Monday' single as I was 'Stitches'. For starters, with the exception of the first track (the single mix), if you just blindly pop this CD into your player without looking at it, you'll be hard pressed to figure out what you're listening to, which isn't necessarily bad, as some of these songs come off really cool.

We start the CD off with the single version of Blue Monday... if you've got 'Candyass', you've heard this; if you have a radio, you've heard this. The second track is the Optical Vocal Mix, which is pretty much your straight-forward drums 'n' bass mix of Blue Monday, and while only 6:37 long, it feels longer than most songs on here. Track three, the Green Velvet Mix of 'Stitches', it blows. For the love of God, stop trying to remix this song, it's not possible. It's basically six minutes and eleven seconds of... looped over a monotonous tune. Just terrible, I can't say enough bad things about this "song".

My patience has paid off! Track four and five, the Club 69 Mix and Club 69 Dub, respectively, are REALLY good. They must have samples from the original New Order 'Blue Monday', because the beats from this sound IDENTICAL to New Order's version. The songs have this 80's feel to them, almost like a New Order/Orgy hybrid song, but at the same time they sound very cutting-edge, and are my personal favorites from the single. The Club 69 Mix clocks in at a whopping 8:40, while the Dub is half a minute shorter, but you'll wish both of them were longer, they're that good. Track six is the Optical Instrumental Mix, which is the Optical Vocal Mix without, you guessed it, vocals! Moving on, for track seven, we get DJ Dan! If you've read my 'Opticon' review, you'll know how much I love this guy ;-). While his 'Stitches' remix was an abomination of remixes, he does a good job of remixing 'Blue Monday', so much that you can actually recognize the song he's mixing!

Overall, this is a MUCH better buy than the 'Stitches' single. You also get the video for 'Blue Monday' in QuickTime format... while I wasn't impressed with any of the videos from 'Candyass', it's still a nice addition to the CD, and makes this a worthwhile purchase. Orgy should let Charlie Clouser, Trent Reznor, Josh Eustis or Troy Van Leeuwen remix some of their stuff, and then I'd be REALLY happy.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff - makes me wanna dance, among other things.......2001-04-14

I bought this single long after I had both of Orgy's albums. They always get great people to remix their stuff, and I listen to the Blue Monday remixes several times a week. If you like this song and dance music, then this would be a good buy for you. The original music of the song is not very prevelent on most the remixes. There is also an excellent remix of Dissention on here that I like even better than the album version. You can hear the background lyrics better and, on this remix, unlike most Orgy remixes, they left in a lot of the original music. Great beats on the whole single - and heck, the band themselves admitted to listening to the thing for four nights straight when they first heard it (they weren't involved in the remixing for this single). And the Club69 track is aptly named. Pay attention to the beat...

      5 out of 5 stars orgy kicks.......2000-06-20

it may not be the best thing orgy has ever done but at least it's good. orgy it a great band. their music is fun and original. as for the two people above who gave orgy such a low rating all i have to say to you is if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. i don't go around bashing the music you like. maybe this isn't the best they've ever but i bet they're making more money doing a half descent song like this than you ever could. what was the point of just saying that it sucked. i think you both should be a little more mature next time you decide to voice your opinion. it's your opinion and i respect that but if it isn't going to do any good you should just keep it to yourself. orgy is the best band i have ever heard and i hope they continue making wonderful music for a long time! this is a great cd!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but What Are the Words?.......2006-07-04

This is a wonderful collection of music spanning many centuries, some of which you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. The performances are beautiful, too. The one drawback is that the liner notes contain very few song text translations, a big problem for a large CD set with music that is primarily vocal.

      5 out of 5 stars outstanding collection.......2002-09-27

I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2001-09-20

This is the best collection of medieval music I have ever heard. The performances are top-notch, and all of the songs are well done. I highly reccomend this collection not only for fans of medieval music, but for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars 7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24

There isn't a clunker in this set. All the performers are top drawer and the recordings are good. The notes are a little brief and a bit scholarly, but can be ignored easily.

You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.

When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.

At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.
