Thirty years after the classic "Song Of A Gypsy" album comes this follow up - still drenched with all the haunting melodies and psychedelic Romany guitar that characterised the original. A welcome return from this US minstrel. Guerssen. 2005.

Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.
Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!
Perfection.......2004-03-08
Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.
disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29
On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

Superb except for the Sound Quality!.......2006-05-10
The selections somewhat varied in style but ultimately all scream "Latin Trumpet". This is as true of LA VIRGIN DE LA MACARENA as it is of the selections from the opera, CARMEN. In all of them, the skill is superb. I just wish the recordings were as well.
I give it 5 stars for the art and 2 stars for the sound. I compromise with 4 because, deep down, I love it.

Masterful Trumpet Virtuoso.......2001-04-11
The one down side is that these were originally 78 rpm recordings from the 40's and 50's, and, as such, the sound quality leaves something to be desired. But don't be put off by that. The greatness of the performances still comes through.

Album Description
The American Yiddish musical theater, a vibrant expression of the immigrant experience, became famous during its heyday in the 1920s-1940s. Combining the musical flavors of Viennese operetta, Tin Pan Alley, and eastern European nostalgia, these songs and duets are quintessential American popular musicwith a Yiddish voice. Volume 1 spotlights the hit songs of Abe Ellstein, one of the genre's premier songwriters. New, historically accurate orchestrations re-create the unforgettable glory days of Yiddish radio and film, the uproarious vaudeville houses, and the thrill of a night at the theater on old New York's fabled "Second Avenue."Customer Reviews:

THOUGHTFUL, WELL-CRAFTED FOLK ROCK, WITH PSYCHADELIC FLOURISHES.......2007-04-15
I'm pleased to report that Horses of War, for the most part, represents the best of the band. My favorite songs I've seen them play are all here, and are sequenced in way that highlights their range, and keeps the album moving along at a brisk pace. For example, "Horses of War" opens with slow, rolling "Fog Rolling In," and then segues into the poppiest track, "Dizzy." Similar smart sequencing occurs by putting "Following You" (a slow track that is really, really beautifully produced here, with a guitar wash laid out the background, and subtle vocal layering/echoes) between "King of King's" (not sure about that apostrophe...) and "Daybreak" -- two songs that, without the buffer, might have seemed a BIT similar to my ears, but here move the album's momentum along nicely, and are allowed to breathe. Well done.
I've seen this band with a lot of different line-ups. The mainstay has always been Josh Read, who is an endearing, versatile vocalist. For my money, he is slightly less convincing -- vocally and lyrically -- on some of the more aggressive numbers here, such as "Hollywood." That said, the lyrics are generally strong, and I appreciate their inclusion in the well-designed CD booklet; looking at them as I listen to Horses of War, it is easy to recognize they are thematically organic to Mr. Read's experiences and feelings, but also carefully crafted. I also really like the layering of Mr. Read's voice on a number of tracks, including the aforementioned "Following You," "Favorite One," and "When You Come Calling."
As for the rest of the band, the "Horses of War" incarnation is a strong one. Evan Berodt is clearly talented on both the bass and guitar, and his playing is rife with nuance, endless rewards for those who listen carefully; I wouldn't mind him 'breaking out' a little more on 'Horses of War,' but that is just because I know how hard he can rock in a live setting (next album, perhaps?). The drumwork from Noel White is solid, too (although I do miss the band's old drummer, Dave Bryson, who is now playing with Son Volt, and who always really impressed me in Revival's early days). And, honestly, the work in the studio really brings out the subtleties of these songs, on a consistent basis. I look forward to the album being a 'grower,' even though I'm semi-familiar with most of these songs.
'Horses of War' is nine tracks, and 37 minutes long. It seems like the band could have thrown one of their covers here, maybe as a bonus track, or one or two more original tracks. But these are small complaints. This is a very good, thoughtful, album, and it is shame if it does not reach a larger audience. I know 'Horses of War' would appeal to fans of Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, Canyon, Gram Parsons, and Nick Drake. Although the band's growing fanbase seems to largely consist of diligent music listeners, I could see this appealing to casual musical fans equally as well.

Aside from the odd Ravi Shankar project, classical and world music fusions seldom seem to work. Here's one that does. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg teams up with Brazilian guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad on a set heavily influenced by the gypsy music of Europe and the Middle East. Written mostly by Sergio Assad, these are lively compositions, with dizzying guitar parts punctuated by Salerno-Sonnenberg's piercing violin to great effect. "Andalucia" is a stunning display of the trio's interplay; "The Chase" will appeal to flamenco lovers; and "Gypsy Songs" is a medley of traditional Hungarian folk tunes. On Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," the tempo unfortunately plods along, but "Somogy's Dream"--based on the gypsy music of Transylvania--is a glorious closer. If you like the guitar and world music, or were enthralled by Joshua Bell's Short Trip Home classical fusion disc, you'll love this. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
A wonderful CD.......2004-01-03
A luminous, brilliant performance.......2002-06-03
The complaints in some reviews here, such as grousing over a lack of discernible melodies, are largely unfounded.
Of course we don't get "Greensleeves" or "Danny Boy" or any familiar, sentimental favorites. And, of course, these tracks are not for the fans of Jim Nabors or Montovani.
But lush, romantic, and witty, dashing tunes abound. A degree of musical sophistication and experience as a listener helps. But anyone who can listen with pleasure to Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea will love this album. It's not nearly as far out as Elliot Carter's String Quartets or Crumb's "Ancient Voices of Children." Not at all, as some reviewers might lead you to believe.
The playing is virtuosic, and I am a classical guitarist and can testify with a technically educated ear. The Thomas Humphrey guitars the Assads play ( one a spruce top and one a cedar top) blend beautifully under Nadja's violin.
One is nearly tempted to make symbolic comparisons here, marking the bird of the violin singing over the ocean of melody pouring from the guitars, or some such silly thing.
Why? Because the whole performance is braided with an erotic yet intellectual chain of musical perfection tied to vital, soaring imagination.
Like the Assad Brothers' Piazzolla album, this one is a must-have for fans of contemporary acoustic music, classical guitar or simply luscious string playing. The gypsy melodies themselves are a magical enough suite to warrant buying this disk.
I Concur with the Disappointed Ones.......2001-07-04
The music leaves me grasping for something else, anything else on my shelf. Certainly there are great musical talents here. Likely, they enjoy the challenge musically. But for the listener class such as we, we'll put our listening time and 5-star reviews with others.
If this is representative of fusion, count me out.
Fiery!.......2000-10-20
Very Dissapointed.......2000-09-26
These are certainly hightly talentd artists, but their collective interpertations of these "tunes" not only destroy their ethnicity but also their beauty.
I fail to understand the rationalization behind taking traditional tunes and warping them into some post-modern mush. Those diminished/augmented/6ths over dropped 7th clashings grate on my nerves! Sometimes I get the impression that "serious" classical artists are not permitted to play beautiful melodies lest they destroy their reputations. Guess we still have to leave that job up to the traditionalist musicians.
I was hoping that, after several listenings, this album would grow on me. No so. Sorry, the musical statements on this album go way over my head. It's headed for the resale bin.
