Where would the '80s have been without the Pet Shop Boys? Discography makes a compelling case for the notion of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe as pioneers, if not geniuses. Mixing the cold feel of Euro-techno beats with the Boys' quest for something warm between the sheets, "What Have I Done to Deserve This" and "Suburbia" sound almost soulful. Although they seemed to be suffering from a terminal case of boredom, they managed to alchemize their ennui into touching sentimentality in "Love Comes Quickly," "Rent," and, especially, the AIDS-oriented "Being Boring." Discography begins with the Pet Shop Boys' beginning, "West End Girls," traveling past "Domino Dancing" and including their covers "Always on My Mind," and the medley "Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.)" --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars A blast from start to finish.......2007-02-13

You cannot hate these guys. Sure they get a little silly with the lyrics at times but what they do well is make catchy pop/dance music and they don't stray. At no point in history of the band has this simple concept been forgotten. They do what they do best and that's enough for this listener.

A song like 'Being Boring' is just plain amazing. But there's lots and lots more. If you love anything about 80s pop music then you will not be wasting one penny on this stellar collection. It's the first 18 singles the band released. Even today I'm in awe of the consistency of this band.

5 out of 5 stars Number One Fan's Husband.......2007-01-22

I bought this for my wife for Christmas as she is a mad Pet Shop Boys fan and I think she has played it every day since. Outstanding, fun complilation.

5 out of 5 stars Suburbia!.......2006-09-25

I have to say that this is my second compact disc because the other one got scratched up. I decided since I love their music to buy another one because the one hit that I love the most is Suburbia. I love listening to it over and over again. I love the other hits like West End Boys and What have I done to deserve this? and others on this collection. I love the sound and keep thinking about London, England and being on the underground or the tube. It's quite a great collection!

5 out of 5 stars 1984 West End Girls version?.......2006-08-28

While I like the 1986 version of WEGs, I LOVE the original 1984 version better. Does anyone know if it is available on CD?

5 out of 5 stars Is $14.98 too much to ask for one perfect pop song?.......2006-06-28

Are you the kind of person who would spend $3.50 for the perfect oyster at a raw bar? How about $7.00 for a perfectly drawn pint of ale in a midtown New York bar? Then dropping $35.00 for a t-shirt because it was made in the US or $18.00 for that small jar of cashews from the minibar because you 'just had to have something to munch on" before going to dinner? If you answered yes to any of the above, you would have no problem dropping the full price (Amazon, $14.98) to have a red-book CD copy (no inferior compressed downloads, thank you) of the perfect pop song, "What have I done to Deserve this?" from Pet Shop Boys. One of the most beautifully sung and arranged female pop vocals ever recorded is to be found on this one song. It is well known that Dusty Springfield demanded several run-throughs and takes to make this cut. She is said to have sweated every single note to perfection because she felt so strongly about her performance. Believe me, it shows. Perfection. You also get the unrivalled, unmatched 80's pop and dance-beat mastery with all the other selections that only the "Boys" were able to create. And all for only $14.98.

Fugazi fans already know that this is the original gospel according to Ian MacKaye. This Washington, D.C., quartet hit harder, faster, and franker than just about anybody--and were willing to see through their own bull as quickly as anyone else's. MacKaye manages to be charismatic and confrontational at the same time: tossing brilliant, genuinely funny asides into his serious-as-a- heart-attack lyrics. Meanwhile, the band, led by Lyle Preslar's staggering guitar attack, pushes MacKaye on with the tightest, most razor-sharp sound in all of hardcore. Nothing in the punk pantheon can come close to "In My Eyes," "Out of Step," or "Salad Days." Absolutely essential. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Depends on how you look at it..........2007-05-12

For me this album had all the meaning that a really good book can have, inasfar as I feel it changed my life. It showed clearly, and with perfect sincerity, how one could regain a relatively stable, morally sound life out of the MTV-Morass that American culture had become (and still is). And all of this coming from a genuinely punk perspective, stripped of anything weird, i.e. religious stuff. Granted, you can see how the philosophy involved colors one's view of the music- I could never separate the philosophy from the music. The philosophy made the music all the more powerful. In contrast, I listen to musically powerful songs whose message is inherently confused - Sex Pistol's "Holidays In The Sun" for example, where they attempt some kind of cool punk-rock look into Communism - and the effect wanes. What is punk rock when you subtract its message and feeling? Power chords and distortion, I guess.

It's interesting to see some reviewers essentially asking the more die-hard or hardcore followers of this way of thinking to relent: and Im sure there have been a fair-share of people with a boorish exposition of Straight Edge and the "message" expressed in this music, who have tired you with their 'preaching'. Young people often take themselves and their principles too seriously, and go to extremes in the name of something they believe in: now its time for YOU to get over that fact, as an observer. We can mellow in our late 20s and 30s, its inevitable anyway, but the music which Ian made was as serious as life is, and I find his stance more admirable than the wishy-washy coolness of whatever bands you care to name. This album is for me pure distilled brilliance, but of course it speaks to some more than others.

5 out of 5 stars Punk, Hardcore, Whatever, at Its Finest........2007-04-13

The first half of the album is really great punk rock, played with great speed, and great precision too! Then, by the second half you start to notice the progression in the band, and a little bit of the music gives hints about the future sound of Embrace and Fugazi, although still much more punk in nature!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greats.......2007-04-12

Years after its release, these tracks still have all their immediacy and power.

This is quintessential DC hardcore, and of course the first "straight-edge" band. Whether or not you agree with their philosophy, the music that emerged from it is tight, smart, sometimes funny, and frequently ironic. There are times when the tunes seem almost electrically charged - and like an electric shock, they're short and to the point. Whether with "In My Eyes" (one of the hardcore classics) or the searing "I'm Seeing Red," these guys aren't mouthing words.

This is DC hardcore at its purest. It's one of those essential records that time can't seem to touch.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection by a very influential band.......2007-04-07

I realy enjoyed the energy of this album and the raw power and speed they play with. A great history lesson for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of hardcore punk.

5 out of 5 stars Get over yourself.......2007-01-06

To the idiot below me, THIS IS NOT PUNK!!! THIS IS HARDCORE!!! But, you're a kiddie, so it doesn't matter. Now, I'm a fan of this and punk, and I've been to both kinds of concerts... HUGE difference! Anyway, the following are punk:
1. The Decline-NOFX
2. 39 Smooth-Green Day
3. Damaged-Black Flag
4. Bollocks-Sex Pistols

But, you probably don't know them... To busy listening to Blink 182 and Sum 41 and Hawthorne Hieghts... GET A LIFE!!!(and a REAL punk cd or two)

Anyway, this cd is awesome. get it.... NOW!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Fav. Hardcore group.......2006-10-27

This is a true original. I grew up listening to this in my bro's Jeep, tearing it up to this group. Allout mosh hardcore music, ruthless. Buy this! Every song is insane. Great Price to.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-08-10

What really makes this disc resonate is reading the liner notes. Once you read about Mike Judge's crusade to send a pissed off message to the straight edge community that was dwindling and saw many of it's staple members leave the scene, you understand his frustration and appreciate the context that these songs were written in. Judge truly was a wake-up call to the straight edge scene, and crucial to the development of metallic harcore bands like Hatebreed, Terror, and Madball. As you learn from the liner notes, an unfortunate side effect of this new feat was a wave of violence at shows. Still, I'm glad Mike Judge was pissed enough to do this for the scene. The man, and the band, do not get enough credit for their influence, and every harcore fan should own this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it only if you don't have their CDs already.......2005-08-09

Judge was a groundbreaking hardcore band, taking the standard 87 style sound and coupling it with metal riffs and tempos years before the metalcore sound was prominent in the scene. If you've never heard the band before, or lost all your vinyl copies years ago, you should get this now.

However, if you already own the "Bringin It Down" CD and "The Storm," there's no need to get this. As far as I know, the recording isn't remastered, the unreleased song "Holding On" is already available on the Rev Rarities CD, and the main selling point, the inclusion of the "Chung King Can Suck It" LP (the original recording of "Bringin' It Down"), isn't worth it. The Chung King material may be good to listen to once, but isn't something I would find myself playing repeatedly. Actually, the biggest surprise is the sound quality of the Chung King LP. Despite the group's well-documented dissatisfaction with it, if you listen to contemporaneous hardcore albums like Bold's "Speak Out" or Misfits' "Earth AD" for comparison purposes, the sound really isn't that bad.

Finally, the layout leaves something to be desired. It's full of photos and has decent liner notes, but could have included more photos and art from the original releases, and the CD itself looks pretty bad: just a picture of a speaker or something with double-exposure of an image of an X-ed up hand on part of it ... something like that. I know the design won't matter to everyone, but if you're going to do a discography, memories and, subsequently, photos and images, become more important. Rev should've followed the example of similar CDs, such as Turning Point's discography, or Mad Parade's "Reissues" CD as far as including artwork from the past releases.

Overall, this is a great package, and it's nice to have everything in one place, but if you already have most of this, it's far from essential, and you should spend your money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars You need this CD!.......2005-07-18

There is not a weak track on this CD. Judge where one of the best 'metal' sounding hardcore bands of the time. Tracks that stand out are Where it went, Bringin' it down and like you but realy, there is nothing you can say against any of the tracks on this CD. Even their cover of Warriors by Blitz is better than the original. The big bonus of this CD is that it is a complete discography of all of Judge's stuff so you need not get ripped off buying 'rare' albums on e-bay etc.

Nice little biography of the band also included along with some pointless pictures (well you have to complain about something)

Anyone who likes Sick of it All, Madball, Suicidal Tendencies (first 3 albums) or any late 80s hardcore needs to buy this CD.

A classic.

5 out of 5 stars It is great, unique music.......2004-12-24

Question is, have you heard the pink and the blue demo tapes? Now there's some punk rock. That stuff, their first releases, is faster, more intense than anything they ever did again. And there are songs from those two releases on this 2xCD set! They've discovered this unique sound, I'm not sure how to describe it. Fortunately, this website lets you sample the songs. They've got their own punk sound without bein' too hard. It's been a delight to watch them change over the years. Each release gets a touch slower, not that they're ever slow, just that they started fast.

They did a coupla songs that shoulda been radio hits, 'Punk Rock Nation' and another one. The boys are from Holland and, as far as I know, only toured the U.S. once, in 1997. Fortunately, I got to see them, twice, in the same night, which, they told us, was like the 25th show they did in 25 days. Real sweethearts, no question. They've been punking for decades now. I'm not sure if they're still around. If I'm not mistaken they finally broke up after about 2 amazing demo tapes, 3 7"s and 8 albums (just an estimate). My guess is they toured a bunch in the general Europe area. I wonder if they ever were able to pay their bills selling some records and CDs and touring? Course, that's the same question one can ask of any band that hasn't had a radio hit and is, essentially, a punk band. Most punx have day jobs.

I'll bet they still have some kinda day jobs (and/or very cooperative, supportive wives/girlfriends/partners). I really recommend you give their songs a listen cuz you've never heard a band that sounds like them. Interestingly, they've maintained their unique sound, that is, even as it morphs over the, what? 20 years? Any of their songs can immediately be recognized as FUNERAL ORATION.

Really, if yer into HC all yer really gonna wanna hear is the first 2 demos and some of those songs are on this, although the Communion 12" is great punk rock too, just not quite as intense as the 2 demos. I've been meticiously collecting their various releases for about 20 years and am glad this release is now available. They did appear on a bunch of compilations, always a good way for punx to get their music heard around the world. The more comps, the better. They've managed to keep me intereted and enjoying their music even though each album is progressively more tame. I suppose I gotta admit that my favorite material is the earliest and as it slowly becomes less harsh, not that they ever were actually, I find the albums to be a bit less to my liking compared to the early material but still enjoyable. That demo stuff is brilliant. And, yes, live they are delightful, tight, strong, good presence and fun to hear. I can't figure out how come they've apparently never gotten more awareness out there. What that teaches me is that just cuz you create something of quality doesn't mean it'll automatically get known. Oh well, good news is, this exists. Heck, the demos tapes exist to, released by the band I'm sure, as the sleeves are non-commercially printed up (the common punk way: xerox!). Ya did Holland proud boys. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars 48 songs! heaven!.......2004-02-10

i'm mad that i waited so long to get this cd. i really don't know how i survived without it. this showcases their evolving styles (some of these songs are reminiscent of Joy Division, even)and man, some of the songs on here give me chills. chills! you KNOW it's something special when that happens.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Band.......2003-12-30

I'm no hardcore punk, and my musical tastes are very very broad. Funeral Oration is my favorite band. There sound is unmistakably original and powerful. Pick up this CD you won't regret it. It's the only recording of any band that I can listen to anytime. I'm still listening to it on a weekly basis, three years after I bought it.

Even if you found this CD on accident, pick it up. you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars hard to the core!!!.......2003-12-17

amazing band truly creative punk rock!!

5 out of 5 stars Back to the roots.......2000-08-02

I have been listing to Funeral Oration for a long time now but not until now I have I herd it all. The CD is your typical discography with some weird version of songs you know and love. I love the version of "Where do you go?" on the 1st CD its so different than the one off Survival. This is hard core punk, back to the days of banging out songs in the garage and playing to a hand full of punks.

A Superb release from sir Ken , the opening track enough to have u placing an order. Also happens to hold one of my favourite all time tracks "insatiable" which is not just a clever name ,you will have this on repeat for sure.

4 out of 5 stars What A big heart!.......2006-02-09

I recommend this cd highly. I actually purchased it by mistake thinking I was buying the love coloured soul cd. I can say now I was quite pleased. Ken Has too many cd's for me to go back and purchase all of them. I am glad I stumbled on to this one.! I would have bought it just on the strength of A big Heart. That song touches my heart so much. It is trully a great smooth jazz selection. The flow of the music is real nice and it just shows how talented that Ken Navarro is. Watch him closely he is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitarist.......1999-06-16

It is rare for me to like every song on a CD but I LOVE every song on this CD! Navarro is an amazing guitarist who has a knack for coming up with super melodic improvisations, especially on the acoustic guitar. I going to to pick up more of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent contemporary jazz guitar CD.......1999-05-12

This CD is what smooth jazz should be - energetic and strong and all 10 songs are winners. Great performances from Navarro and also Eric Marienthal on sax and Gary Grainger on bass. I also really liked "Smooth Sensation" but I think this one is a notch better.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars superb album!!!!.......2004-01-29

I just really love this album. Although I am not really into contempory jazz, I really enjoy listening to this album. the songs are soothing and..... relaxing especially " I've always loved you" and "smooth sensation". Great music to enjoy on a quite evening weekend at home ...v^0^v

2 thumbs up for Ken Navarro !!!

4 out of 5 stars SMOOTH IT IS.......2000-10-06

As the cd title states "smooth sensation" is what typically you`re listening to. Time and Love, Smooth Sensation and Be My Side are three of Ken`s better compositions. Eric Marenthal adds his ever so mellow saxes to the mix. Nothing here to make you want to get up and "boogie" but that`s not the cd`s intention. Quiet, reserved, catchy tunes, Smooth Jazz at it`s finest. Not to disappoint.

Maryland guitarist Ken Navarro and his independent label, Positive Music, have shouldered their way in among the Larry Carltons and GRPs of the world to become major players in the pop-instrumental field. Not only have Navarro's own albums consistently landed in the top 10 of the "adult alternative" and "new adult contemporary" charts, but so have those of his labelmates Gregg Karukas and Bobby Militello. Navarro's sixth solo album, "Brighter Days," is a further refinement of his label's successful formula: bright, easily digestible pop melodies played cleanly and precisely over steady, comfortable rhythms. This recording features the presence of Positive Music's saxophonist Brandon Fields, who adds a slightly different spin to Navarro's melodies in easy-going, Najee-like lines. Navarro himself plays nylon-string guitar on 6 of the 10 cuts, lending a delicate, Earl Klugh-like feel to the proceedings. --Geoffrey Himes

        Album Description

Simply put, the Maximillian Colby retrospective discography is a document of not only a (sadly) relatively obscure band, but also a snapshot of a mid-'90s sound still aped by fall-on- the-floor-wailing revivalists today.

Maximillian Colby fashioned seminal works on their own terms. Neither purely aggressive nor depressingly somber, Maximillian Colby's music creates soundscapes that can rupture the eardrums and soon after lull the mind. As a band, they melded crisp whispers with clamor drenched in feedback to dizzying, cathartic effect.

With songs that run such a gamut of genres, Maximillian Colby never let their music lapse lazily into incoherence. Rather, the sounds they created are a lesson in methodical precision and totality. For example, how many other bands can succeed in writing an engaging, eight-minute song whose two primary tones are within a half-step of each other? Maximillian Colby were all too happy to wring the utmost out of something as deceptively innocuous as a pair of notes, exploring their many inherently possible rhythms, dynamics, and effects.

This all-encompassing exploration of the different, nuanced qualities of each song reflects Maximillian Colby's playful, deft approach to their art. Songs will build and build, only to have the climax moments or even half a song later. What seems like relentless adolescent pummeling is in fact incredibly intentional and calculated. This charismatic musical approach ensures that Maximillian Colby's music remains as captivating, animated, and vital as it was a decade ago.
