A Great Live Album From A Righteous Rock Guitarist.......2007-07-11
LIVE AT ROSELAND BALLROOM is a great live CD by Government Mule, with no overdubs and no touch-ups. Instead, what you hear is the unvarnished honesty of a true power trio playing their hearts out like there's no tomorrow. True, this can lead to some overindulgence and excessive jamming, but there are several great songs that more than make up for the occasional excess. In addition, guitarist-singer Warren Haynes' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Excellent. Classic Mule, hard hitting three man power........2007-06-15
Gov't Mule is an awesome band. Great lyrics and singing along with powerful guitar work by Warren Haynes. Fantastic drum work by Matt Abts. Heavy deep end by Allen Woody (too bad he had to leave us so soon).
If you haven't listened to the Mule, this is a terrific album to cut your teeth on.
old school Mule.......2007-05-12
As it says in the liner, 'No overdubs, no editing, no apologies. Warren would like to take responsibility for being out of tune during Painted Silver Light. Matt would like to take responsibility for the confusion at the end of Dont Step On The Grass. Everything else is Woody's Fault !'
Master tapes were recently Calbitized and sound wonderful. This music absolutely demands to be played loud. Bonus Voodoo Chile makes for nice filler. Awesome reissue, crank it up !
Reissue of the 2nd Mule album with "Voodoo Chile" bonus.......2007-05-11
Chronologically speaking, this was the second Gov't Mule album (a live document of their New Year's Eve 95/96 concert at NYC's Roseland Ballroom). True Haynes fans / Mule-heads will pay for the double dip in order to obtain the 15 minute "Voodoo Chile" with Jack Casady on bass and Chuck Leavell on organ (NOT the version found on the "Deepest End" DVD). The original album offered up a tasty 8-minute version of Steppenwolf's "Don't Step On The Grass Sam," one Allman Bros. track ("Kind Of Bird") and four tracks from the debut album. There's a reason why Haynes has found a home not only in Gov't Mule but also in The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Allman Brothers...they're all jam bands and he's the consummate jam player. Everybody and his brother has covered "Voodoo Child, Slight Return" at one time or another, but Warren's the only player of consequence I know of who's tackled "Voodoo Chile" WITH original bassist Casady in tow. Later in Gov't Mule's career, an attempt was made to offer songs at the more traditional 3 to 4 minute length. Not here. The shortest track runs at approximately 6 minutes, with two topping 15. This is air guitar heaven. Jump in.

Album Description
The Classic Live Album Is Back!
Along with B.B. and Albert, Freddie King was known as one of the "Three Kings of the Blues." And of the three, he's generally credited with having the greatest impact on rock. Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and countless others have acknowledged a great debt to his brand of guitar playing and have covered his songs.
As part of its continued restoration of classic Black Top blues albums, Shout! Factory is proud to make the award-winning Live At The Electric Ballroom, 1974 available to blues fans once again. First issued in 1996, the album contains a stellar concertfeaturing such classics as "Hideaway," "Dust My Broom," and "Sweet Home Chicago"recorded two years before his death, along with revealing taped interviews and King's only known acoustic recordings. Along with his classic early singles, this essential album rounds out the portrait of a hugely talented and influential blues master.

The big man doing what he does best!!!!!.......2006-06-28
Great cd for your blues collection. Worth every penny.......
Freddie King is perhaps the most progressive and least known of the three famous "Kings of Blues", Albert and BB King being the other two.
Cd has two in-studio acoustic performances (only known Freddie King acoustic recordings)and a great live 1974 show.

Customer Reviews:
A useful collection for dance DJs and party hosts / hostesses.......2007-04-04
4 stars
This is a fine collection of vocal music for various kinds of swing dancing. All 16 tracks have been digitally remastered and they are reasonably clean of noise, pop, hiss, etc. I can't say I love every track, but it is a useful collection for dance DJs and party hosts / hostesses.
The first eight tracks are listed under "swing." They are slow-between 29-31 measures per minute. Single rhythm swing would not be much fun to these, but they are great for triple rhythm swing. If you are adventersome, and this is not a stretch if you love it, dance West Coast swing and slink up the hall!
Tracks 9-11 range betweem 33-37 mpm, and they are fun if your knees will let you dance Lindy-hop to them.
Tracks 12-16 are listed as jitterbug or jive and range from 38-54 mpm.
Here are the titles, durations, suggested dance, measures per minute, and artist:
Ability To Swing, 4:51, WCSwing, 31 (Patti Austin)
Think, 2:20, WCSwing, 28 (Aretha Franklin)
Who told you? 4:09, WCSwing, 29 (James Cotton, et al.)
Destination Anywhere, 3:12, WCSwing, 30 (Commitments)
Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me, 2:50, WCSwing, 31 (Nina Simone)
Hot Coffee, 4:54, WCSwing, 30 (Carl Anderson)
Messin' With The Kid, 2:15, WCSwing, 30 (Buddy Guy & Junior Wells)
Chain Of Fools, 2:48, WCSwing, 29 (Aretha Franklin)
Rocket 88, 2:51, Lindy, 37 (Buster Poindexter)
My Boyfriend is Back, 3:27, Lindy, 33 (Melissa Manchester)
Ol' Man River, 3:26, Lindy, 34 (Earl Grant)
Jive After Five, 2:22, Jive, 38 (Carl Perkins)
Walkin Blues, The, 5:22, Jive, 40 (Royal Crown Revue)
Trickle Trickle, 2:22, Jive, 46 (Manhattan Transfer)
Jack, You're Dead, 2:48, Jive, 54 (Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive Band)
Why do fools fall in love, 2:17, Jive, 44 (Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers)
Best of ballroom swing and Jitterburg.......2007-03-10
The CD is just okay, it is not what I expected.
Do not buy this CD!.......2003-01-29
What a waste. Is this bad music? Not really. Is it the best choice for Lindy Hopping? No! It is one of the worst compilations out there in fact. This is a result of people that teach at a general dance studio trying to be cool and find music you can swing to--while not being swing music. Or perhaps they couldn't secure the rights to anything else??? Could you dance to these songs? I guess. Do I want to? No way.
pardon the putative cynicism.......2001-10-26
This album is a compilation of competent cuts of good classics which individually and collectively appear to represent the title, but in general, each piece is far from the center as a representative of each genre. To an accomplished dancer this may work or even be exactly what you are looking for. To a novice this album is the pits.
Disappointing.......2000-03-01
As the first reviewer said, this is not Lindy Hop music. Aside from the Royal Crown Revue track, it is maybe West Coast Swing music at best. Great for WCS, but not for Lindy or even East Coast.

Best Live Mule!.......2007-04-03
What I actually mean is the song "Mule." This one version alone is easily worth the price of admission, while the rest of the disc rocks very well. The band is well recorded--a really great sounding live album. I'm surprised it's gone out of print. (?)
The Mule Delivers!.......2004-03-04
Live at Roseland Ballroom is yet another excellent example of the musical prowess of Gov't Mule. As usual, Warren, Allen, and Matt each bring their best to the table, which leads to one amazing CD. The tracks flow incredibly as the band continues to outdo itself as the album goes on. A loose, jammy feel permeates the CD and results in an extremely enjoyable listening experience. Like one of the other reviewers said, if you can actually find the damn thing, buy it!!! And check out more Gov't Mule!
I was there, and I can't tell the difference.......2003-12-29
This was supposed to be the opening act for Blues Traveler's 1995-6 New Year's concert, but Gov't Mule stole the show with Traveler's set acting more as an afterthought (no offense Popper, you guys were great, too). It is the only Mule album I own, and to this day, I haven't found reasons to buy anything else in their repetoire. Some bands are better live, and this is a fine example of that.
The Definitive Mule Album.......2003-11-19
Want to know what Mule's about? Buy this album--if you can get your hands on it. From the octave accented "St. Stephen" tease to the swinging rendition of "Kind of Bird," this release will absolute floor you.
The way rock oath to be................1999-01-24
For me this is Gov't Mule best record. Hard rocking blues with a twist of jazz. This is very raw and straight forward and I know they don't make records like this way anymore. Only the Mule could and play this kind of music that other bands dare not to trend. My favorite is "Trane" ala Mahavishnu style with more blues put in it. All the numbers in this record is an "A". I would consider this a collector's piece. It's the next best thing seeing the band live. Warren Haynes, Allen Woody and Mat Abtts, these guys know what they're doing and they are doin it good.

The least acknowledged of the Three Kings who ruled in the early '70s (B.B. and Albert rounding out the triumvirate), Freddy King nevertheless had a great sway on the blues that followed his death in 1976. His aggressive, stringing leads turned the heads of Eric Clapton and his blues-rock British peers, who, in turn, passed his legacy on to most of the bar-band jammers gnashing their way through "Sweet Home Chicago" to this very day. Live at the Electric Ballroom, 1974 is a collection of 10 songs (broken up here and there by brief interview segments) that includes the only two known acoustic recordings of King. "Dust My Broom" gets both the plugged and unplugged treatment from the Texan. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
and you thought he was good in the studio!!!.......2000-08-22
this live CD perfectly depicts freddie in his prime. at an emotional and talent high freddie does a great preformance. the sound quality ain't perfect but aint bad it sounds like it was recorded with analog!!! (which is great) all in all i own alot of freddie king alblums but this one gonna stay in my CD player for a while!!!
Hot, Hot, Hot!.......2000-06-18
Freddie King was a monster of the blues and this CD shows exactly why. His guitar playing is ferocious, explosive, incendiary, soulful, emotional, and beautiful all at the same time. Freddie does several of his best known tunes including Hide Away, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Key To The Highway and Dust My Broom. These are just as great as Clapton's versions, though they sound a bit different. Buy this CD for Freddie's awesome singing and guitar-playing, but you'll also get some fascinating interviews with him and two acoustic performances. As good as Freddie sounds on an electric guitar, he sounds just as good on an acoustic. Highly recommended.
They didn't call him the Texas Cannonball for nothing........1999-03-12
This CD captures the essence of Freddie King in the type of venue in which he was at his best - live, in front of an appreciative audience. I was lucky enough to have heard him several times before his death. Once was in November of 1975 at Oklahoma State University's Gallagher Hall. The concert was particulary memorable in that Freddie had the 300 or so people who attended make the 6000+ seat sports arena sound as if it were sold out. That place was rockin'! This CD gives the listener a feel for what it was like to hear and experience his music on a night such as that, something you'll never get from his studio recordings.
Much of enjoying Freddie's music was visual. He was a big, powerful looking guy that played with a lot of obvious emotion; emotion that at time made him seem as if he were angry. He had a manner that said, "If you don't like what I'm playin' or how I'm playin' it, I'm gonna come down there and kick your butt." You couldn't help but like the guy's music, otherwise he was going to kill you! This demeanor doesn't really come through on the CD but if you turn it up loud, I mean really loud, then you'll have the next best thing to having experienced the Texas Cannonball at his finest.

The Dvd Begins with a Long Jam from Taylor's Backing Band that is truly pointless and tiring...Utilize the Menu option and begin with Cut #2, and You will witness a stirring Live Performance, Outstanding Camera Work and many upclose views of Johnnie Taylor in impassioned Vocalization, Sweat pouring off His Face, Dirty Southern Soul/R&B at its Finest. A few Hits juxtaposed by some Excellent Blues, and a Fine Duet with Cute Daughter Tasha Taylor. I attended Taylor's Longhorn Ballroom Concert in 1996, 15 Months prior to this One, I had hoped this DVD was from THAT Show, but This one was probably better (The Show I went to had Taylor Cursing a mildly unruly crowd ("Sit Your Black Ass Down!"), and threatening to leave early, which He did, for about 10 minutes during "Cheaper to Keep Her", before returning)...Excellent Vocal phrasing, as usual, lots of quick Camera Pans that Work seamlessly to give the Viewer the feeling He is actually THERE...I Generally Disdain Live Concert Videos, but this One is Thumbs Up!!!
Johnnie T........2005-11-08
I would've given this DVD a 5 star rating but the DVD begins with the introduction of Johnnie Taylor's band performing 25 minutes before Johnie Taylor walks out on stage. That's my only negative about the DVD.
Although Johnnie does stay on stage for an hour performing songs like 'Who's Makin' Love", "Last Two Dollars", "Sending you a Kiss", "Good Love", "Disco Lady" etc. He even does a duet with his Daughter "Tasha" singing "Ain't That Lovin' You".
This DVD was recorded in 1997 when Johnnie was touring off the "Good Love" CD which was the highlight of Johnnie Taylor career at Malaco.
We all know that the "Good Love' CD is indeed a classic so you won't go wrong picking up this DVD seeing a legend at his finest.
At the end of this DVD Malaco Records honor him and give tribute to his passing on May 31, 2000.

Album Description
Recorded "Live" at the legendary Dallas venue on Christmas night, 1999, the late great Johnnie Taylor even took to the stage briefly with Bobby. This CD captures Bobby handling Johnnie Taylor's "Wall to Wall" and the Albert King classic "I'll Play the Blues For You. His own soul-blues ballad, "Right Place, Wrong Time" is a pertinent tale of infidelity that he successfully recorded for the legendary Paula label. It enables him to communicate intimately with the cheering crowd. "When the Lick'n Stops" is a funky naughty number inspired by Marvin Sease. "I'd Rather Eat Soup" is Bobby's own hit, a dreamy beat-ballad and the title track of an earlier CD. On these extended performances, Bobby interweaves a rap with his vocals and reveals how engaging a performer he is.

sincere 'Rock and Roll Music'.......2006-12-23
The Frost were a metro-Detroit ensemble that found themselves caught between the psychedelic and hard-rock genres of the late 1960's and early 1970's. They fit right in with the bevy of other strong rock acts from Southeast Michigan in that era, bands that included the MC5, Grand Funk Railroad, and the Stooges, as well as less accomplished acts such as SRC and the Rationals. Their high energy garage rock sound has aged better than most, however, so this recording from the legendary Grande Ballroom in 1970 is a welcome addition to their canon (or should that be, cannon?).
The driving force behind the Frost was lead guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Wagner. While Wagner was the only member of Frost to accrue any national acclaim, eventually playing behind another Michigan luminary, one Alice Cooper, the rest of the band is talented enough, and clearly motivated enough, to create an electric atmosphere on stage. Most of this disc simply rocks the Casbah, beginning with the Frost's equivilent of the MC5's 'Kick Out the Jams', the anthemic 'Rock and Roll Music' from their album of the same name, their second album of 1969. With its unrelenting beat and simple, robust lyrics ("Rock and roll music is all that you need to be free"), it's the ideal opening track. Another song from the same disc follows, 'Sweet Lady Love', featuring a catchy melody running over an avalanche of rhythm sounds, and engaging lyrics like "just when you think you're nobody's fool, sweet lady takes you by surprise". A fine track from the band's 1969 debut LP, 'Frost Music' follows, called 'Baby Once You Got It' ..."you're never gonna let it be". Track five launches into a heartfelt slow-down blues romp, 'Donny's Blues', a decent white-boy-sings-the-blues number from the 'Rock and Roll Music' LP with the requisite mouth harp solo. Tracks six and seven are a foray into the uncharted territory of the bands third disc, 1970's 'Through the Eyes of Love', both high energy guitarfests. The last three selections feature two lengthy workouts, one a ten-minute, two song medley from 'Frost Music', 'Take My Hand' and 'Mystery Man', the latter being a local hit for the band. In the midst of the rocking din the band provides refuge with, believe it or not, an a-capella moment! The closer is a manic, blow-out, sixteen minute plus version of the Animals 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place', which opens and closes with lots of intense guitar forays on the basic theme. An edited twelve minute version appeared on the 'Rock and Roll Music' disc. Being that the year was 1970, you probably won't be taken by surprise by the five minute drum solo. Inserted between these lengthy tracks is another Frost staple, 'Black Train', the chosen vehicle to "take my woman, take her far away, can't stand to be with her another day". Definitely solid blues-rock.
'Live At the Grande Ballroom' is very well recorded given the era and the fact that The Frost were, and would remain, at best a second-tier band. If you're a fan of midwest garage rock from the late 1960's however, you could do a lot worse than picking up a disc by this hardworking outfit. And there was absolutely no reason why the classic 'Rock and Roll Music' shouldn't be appearing on compilations such as 'Nuggets' especially when you consider that weak entries like the Mojo Men's cover of the Buffalo Springfield's 'Sit Down I Think I Love You', their second song on that four disc tour de force, made the cut. A bit more respect is due. I'm tempted to assign four stars, but three is more reasonable simply given the fairly generic nature of the compositions and performance.
Surprise release of 1969 live album is a treat........2001-07-07
The Frost was a late 1960's Detroit group that released three albums on Vanguard, "Frost Music," "Rock and Roll Music", and "Through the Eyes of Love." The first album was mediocre, the second included "live" recordings made at the Grande Ballroom and some studio recordings. Their final album released in 1970 showed significant development in songwriting and performance, and it was unfortunate they split up shortly after that. This 2001 release "Live at the Grande Ballroom" is a real surprise and will immediately appeal to any original fan of the group. It turns out that the live songs released on "Rock and Roll Music" were live except that the vocals were redubbed, and the band was recorded on two nights at the Grande Ballroom. None of the songs included on the new release have been previously released, all are completely "live", and the band just burns through the first songs. "Rock and Roll Music," "Sweet Lady Love," "Baby If You Got It" are great, hard energy rock of late '60's Detroit rock. "Donny's Blues," a highlight of the R&RM album, is nearly as good here, but the version released in 1969 is slightly better. The opening of the live recording of "Black as Night" is great, it's too bad it wasn't retained on the studio recording. "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" is over 16 minutes long, certainly a great song to witness if you were in the audience, but hard to appreciate listening to this CD. Overall, Dick Wagner's guitar performance is very good and his vocals are good; Don Hartman's rhythm guitar work is OK but it's his voice that's the real earthy gem on the songs he sings, amazing that few people ever took note of that; Gordy Garris's bass playing is excellent (interestingly, he's not pictured on any of the live photo shots inside the digipack); Bob Rigg's drumming is excellent. It's hard to figure out why this group never got more of a following but I don't think they were promoted well as they developed at the time they released their second and third albums. The digipack is designed like a gatefold LP album, kind of, but is 1/2 inch taller than a normal CD so won't fit in my CD storage compartment. I'd highly recommend this to any fan of the group. As I said, it's a surprise it has been released at all given what must have been modest sales of their original albums in 1969 and 1970, but a happy surprise.

Brutal / Wonderful.......2006-01-19
This is my favorite Mule album. Hard to find, don't know where I got it. Best sound of all the Mule albums, sharply defined in a medium sized concert space. The bass oh the bass!
Anyway, the music is also wonderful. My favorite is the first cut, "Trane". John McLaughlin fans take note: in the middle of Trane, Warren quotes Eternity's Breath from the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Visions of the Emerald Beyond NOTE FOR NOTE.
It really is overwhelming when that breaks out.
Explosive playing, no dross.
Buy this album!
