5 out of 5 stars Humble beginnings.......2006-05-11

This CD of the group is actually a compilation put together by band leader Ward Kimball in 1986, well after the group retired in 1971. Each song was remastered from the original source specifically for the Good Time Jazz label. It has over an hour of music, longer than any of their other CD's since all the rest are just straight conversions from the original albums.

The Firehouse Five Plus Two was a band that played Dixieland Jazz and had the unique distinction of being animators and other employees that worked at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. One of the most famous animators to work for Disney was Ward Kimball's who played classic Dixieland records in his office during lunchtimes to blowoff some steam. Soon the guys brought in instruments and began playing along with the record. One day when the record player broke down and they played anyway. They kept on playing without the record player and the rest is history. Their jam sessions caused animators, storymen, and inbetweeners to dance with the ladies from the color and ink crew right in the soundstage. As members of the group were some of his best studio animators, Walt Disney liked them and let them do their own thing on the side. But he also loved their music and onstage antics. He even invited them to play in the Disneyland park on Opening Day in 1955 and made repeat visits for the next 15 years after that, and later to even appear on his TV show.

The group made 12 albums over the years, some of which included original artwork on the cover by animator Ward Kimball. They even released a very special album called "At Disneyland" which is a live concert in the Golden Horseshoe Saloon at Disneyland Frontierland. Even today you can still hear their music on a visit to Disneyland in Anaheim, California. When you take a ride on the Mark Twain riverboat, it has a music loop playing Dixieland Jazz as part of the background theme music on board that includes tracks from this LP (now a CD) including, "Muskrat Ramble", "Fidgety Feet", & "Come Back, Sweet Poppa".

Over the years they performed on the Bing Crosby radio show and his golf tournaments, were featured in several Walt Disney TV specials. They also appeared on the original Mickey Mouse Club's "Anything Can Happen Day" on and performed two numbers, "I Want to be a Fireman" and the "Tiger Rag". This appearance is available on the DVD "The Best of the Mickey Mouse Club" here at Amazon.com. It is mislabeled on the DVD as November 12, 1964 which was actually a re-run of the original episode that almost 10 years earlier;

The band was not owned or controlled by the Disney Company in any way. They moonlighted, recorded albums, played in nightclubs, and had a lot of fun along the way. The FF5+2 was not some polished studio band with tight engineering, but an exercise in spontaneity and improvisation. They truly didn't even believe in practicing, just havin' fun. Maybe that is the best part of listening to them, because they sound great and are very full of life and laughter. They still make you want to dance along. Interestingly, as animators they were used to creative sound effects and included this art in their music too. For example they used an anvil on one track, sirens, bells and whistles.... and it works.

5 out of 5 stars You WILL tap your toes.......2004-01-25

What an amazing collection of recordings. I was afraid that the digitization of this old(er) music might mute the sound or make it sound strange. What a delightful surprise I got. I kept turning up the voume higher and higher, and the horns and whistles and sirens got crisper and crisper. I could NOT stop tapping my toes. My smile broadened with each song, even the blues numbers.

I purchased this album as an effort to remember the music my Dad listened to when I was a kid. I was thinking that this music was best heard as a remembrance of him. How wrong I was. These Dixieland tunes cannot help but make anyone happy, and I intend to take this CD into the office to spread the joy.

The only picky negative criticism I have (and some will find it a positive) is that the last two tunes were recorded from a live performance, with people talking during the intros and exits to the songs. I would have prefered the "pure" recordings. Again, some will like the concocted party background noise, which disappears as soon as this fantastic band starts wailing away with their instruments.

Once I wear out this CD, I expect to purchase more music from the Firehouse Five Plus Two!!!!

4 out of 5 stars FireHouse Plus Two -Dixieland Favorites Sept 11, 2001.......2001-09-13

One of the great appeals of traditional Dixieland music is the distinct beat obtained by using a banjo and tuba for the rhythm section. "Modern" Dixieland bands tend to use drums and base for the rhythm section. The beat just doesn't compare - listen to their rendition of Muskat Ramble where the banjo and tuba will set your feet tapping! Sound quality of this CD is excellent. Highly recommended for Dixieland fans.

5 out of 5 stars Firehouse Five plus Two Dixieland Favorites.......2000-04-25

This CD contains a great hour plus assortment of Dixieland music played by a very talented group of musicians. The sound quality is right up there with some of the best CDs produced. This CD will be difficult to match, let alone beat for Dixieland enthusiasts. A solid five stars ... closer to six.

5 out of 5 stars At the top of their form!.......1999-12-05

The great musicianship and spirit of the Firehouse Five Plus Two is at its best in this album. I believe the group did its best work in the years when George Probert played soprano sax with them, and this CD contains some of Probert's finest work. His extended solo on "Canal Street Blues" is perhaps the most expressive soprano sax playing this side of Sidney Bechet. If you're going to own only one Firehouse Five Plus Two recording (though I can't imagine why anyone would stop at just one!), this would be my choice.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy is the BEST.......2002-03-05

This CD is Excellent for relaxing. I listen to it every night.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-03-14

If you are new to Debussy, this CD is great to start. If you are already a fan, this CD is the perfect weekend companion. It features a well chosen selection of pieces from several of his works, both orchestral and solo piano. Best of all (as the title indicates) these pieces are all adagio/lento that are pleasant to listen to and relax... It is also very well priced, so it is a good CD to recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Debussy IS for Relaxation.......2000-06-13

This CD's title says it all - just for relaxation.

Debussy is for soul searching time, contemplation of the universe or just vegging out.

If this is what you're looking for you've found it.

First recorded in 1949, this band was the side project of a group of animators at the Walt Disney studios; this two-CD set collects the group's recordings up to 1954. The Firehouse Five began at the peak of the California revival of traditional jazz, when the music was sharply divided into warring camps and traditions were jealously defended. But there was nothing doctrinaire about the band's enthusiastic, almost frenetic, approach. Owing as much to vaudeville as it did to New Orleans jazz, it invoked the spirit of America's early popular music, including novelty tunes like "Who Walks in When I Walk Out." The sirens and other sound effects that the band added to its music even suggest a kinship with its inspired contemporary Spike Jones. Though these recordings may send traditional purists into apoplexy, the level of musicianship is surprisingly high and the spirit is infectious. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Really is Good Time Jazz!!!.......2007-04-12

I am no musical scholar but i have always been fascinated by the Prosperous, wild, and immoral times of the roaring 20's. When you listen to this music you can picture those times with cop cars chasing after gangsters in a high speed chase with Tommy Guns Blazing. You can picture happy people doing the Charleston and flappers doing their naughty dances. You can picture guys like Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey in a speak easy pounding down beer after beer and giving every cutie on the dance floor a spin. This music captures the upbeat happy times of the ragtime, dixeland wild era of our countries history. If you liked the music in the film The Sting......if you like Rag and Dixie.......then this is that music on Steroids. Most reviews classify this group as a more like a jazz band that had costumes and antics and made some toe tappers. Believe me when i tell you that i'm looking at the big picture and i mean what i say when i say that if i were to pick one album to represent what the Music of Americana was during the teens and 20's.........this would be the album. There are some songs on this album that get your blood up so much that you wish you could intimidate a cop for no reason into a high speed chase with tommy guns ablazing. It is the funnest, wildest, toe tappin, good time jazz you'll ever hear. But It!!

    5 out of 5 stars Kimball World.......2005-08-06

A long time ago it took me a short while to figure out the things I liked about Disney were all Ward Kimball efforts. In fact, I didn't like straight-up Disney product at all. Hated it in fact. No balls, sap-headed, a bit too precious. Much of Disney couldn't stand Ward either but Walt had a special place in his heart for the maniac. He knew nothing would fly in vison and magic-land unless there was a Trickster there to give it a kick in the arse--something the modern Disney has completely forgotten.

I've heard these wonderful recordings of the band Ward got together described as corny. Banana oil! They're fun and ironic and if you listen carefully you'll hear the spirit of Spike Jones in most of them and you'll also hear the spirit of Ward years later in the Squirrel Nut Zippers (check out the first cut on their Music for Lovers album!). We were starting to see a revival of healthy fun, style, and zaniness in the world until that drip and his entourage of downers turned up in the White House. And of course 9-11 knocked it all into a cocked hat. Too bad.

So screw 'em. Pick this up and blast it while driving through town in your SUV. Order the recently released Thin Man collection and that 90s screwball masterpiece, "Freaked." Hey, one of those Thin Man flicks has a bonus cartoon--Screwy Squirrel dealing with a saccharine Disney-type cutsey-bootsy bunny. Cool. Fight the drips.

5 out of 5 stars Master Animators, Amazing Musicians.......2002-08-07

I'd been thinking of getting a Firehouse Five Plus Two cd for many years, but it was the recent passing of Ward Kimball (the founder of the group and the animator behind such famous Disney characters like Jiminy Cricket) that made me search for their cds on Amazon.

I have always enjoyed the taped performances I've seen by the group (you can catch them on the "Disneyland, USA" DVD released last year), but listening to the music--a frentic, frantic, and altogether fun collection--one can really sense that these men, so reknowned for their artistic talent, were blessed with a multiplicty of talents.

It's not intended to be listened to as background music for a quiet evening at home--the fire bells at the beginning of Disc One makes that quite clear--but it definitely is meant to be listened to when you feel like smiling, enjoying some wonderful dixieland jazz (one might feel inclined to look for the nearest speakeasy and dance the charleston), and remembering some of the greatest animators who ever lived, put on this collection, which highlights some of their greatest moments.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful happy music.......1999-12-05

The Firehouse Five Plus Two were wonderful musicians. This is a fact often overlooked, as they clearly played for fun -- both the listeners' and their own. In their early years, their humor and slapstick antics on stage often obscured their excellent musicianship. This double CD of their earlier recordings shows their growth and development, but the goofiness which characterized their live performances is not present in these studio recordings. In my view, they did not reach their peak till the arrival of George Probert and his magnificent soprano sax playing; Probert appears on only a few of these tunes. But the infectious energy and joy of this band was apparent from the start, and these songs can be played again and again with satisfaction and joy.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent - You won't regret it !!!!.......1999-10-09

I bought it without knowing who these guys were. After talking with some older people they told me that Firehouse Five plus Two had been very famous in the 50's. This CD is a great selection. The sound is very good considering that are recordings for the 40's and 50's. If you like this kind of music you'll find here the best.

    4 out of 5 stars Relaxing CD.......2000-06-12

If you enjoy James Galway, you should get this CD. It is wonderful easy listening music for when you are doing something else like reading. It is not as exciting as some of his other CDs but just as good. All the songs are beautiful and will be greatly appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION!!.......2006-02-21

This 2 CD set is really great and takes all the tracks from "THE FIREHOUSE FIVE PLUS TWO STORY" plus a number of tracks from their "GOES SOUTH" album as well as a number of tracks from their "PLAYS FOR LOVERS album and has them all here to enjoy and its done really great!

One of the best things about this set is that it gives you 2 songs that never before have been available on album or CD ,they were just released on 45 RPM records only and these are:

"JINGLE BELLS" and "THERES A TAVERN IN THE TOWN".

These are truly great numbers and are toe tappin!

Also, this collection gives you 2 versions of 2 songs, and these are

"Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me", one version is the 45 RPM version and the other is the LP version.
The 2nd song is "Down Where The Sun Goes Down" and again is the same deal, one is a 45 RPM version and the other the LP version.

So indeed this collection is a MUST HAVE!!

    ENJOY!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12

I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.

5 out of 5 stars I really can't add anything to the other reviews..........2007-01-07

...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.

5 out of 5 stars An essential item for any classical collection.......2006-04-20

Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.

I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Rabin was INCREDIBLE.......2006-04-14

I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01

If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.

This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Dixieland by a solid group.......1999-12-05

The Firehouse Five Plus Two made grand music in the '50s. Most of their albums had a theme; this one features songs about the South. Some are Dixieland classics, such as "Milenburg Joys" and "Original Dixieland One-Step;" others were not originally Dixieland songs at all, like "At a Georgia Camp Meeting;" and some are obscure tunes which are seldom recorded at all, like "Birmingham Papa." This is classic Firehoue Five stuff, with the brilliant core of the Firehouse Five in fine form: George Probert, Danny Alguire, Frank Thomas, and of course the leader Ward Kimball. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys traditional jazz.

"Fire Chief" Ward Kimball as band leader and the "Firehouse Five Plus Two" a Dixieland jazz band that made at least 10 albums. They performed on the Bing Crosby radio show, were featured in a 1950's Walt Disney TV special called "One Hour in Wonderland" that predated the weekly show. They appeared on "Dateline Disneyland" (ABC's Opening Day live television broadcast) in front of the firehouse on Main Street USA, in the parade, and finally performing at the now extinct Plantation House resteraunt in Frontierland. They also appeared on the original Mickey Mouse Club's "Anything Can Happen Day" on and performed two numbers, "I Want to be a Fireman" and the "Tiger Rag". This appearance is available on the DVD "The Best of the Mickey Mouse Club" here at Amazon.com. It is mislabeled on the DVD as November 12, 1964 which was actually a re-run of the original episode that almost 10 years earlier; the footage of the second song reappeared in a "Wonderful World of Disney" episode called "At Home with Donald Duck", although the footage was edited out for a 1976 re-run. On January 3, 1964 they appeared on another episode,
They Disneyland 10th Anniversary". They had other appearances in non-Disney fare.

The amazing thing is that they did all of this while working as busy top Walt Disney Studio animators. Truth is that they liked to blow off steam on breaks and after work. They played in the studio offices or on a studio soundstage in the early days. Their jam sessions caused animators, storymen, and inbetweeners to dance with the ladies from the color and ink crew right in the soundstage. As members of the group were some of his best studio animators, Walt Disney liked them and let them do their own thing on the side. But he also loved their music and onstage antics. He even invited them to play in the Disneyland park on Opening Day in 1955 and regularly after that, and later to even appear on his TV show.

The band was not owned or controlled by the Disney Company in any way. They moonlighted, recorded albums, played in nightclubs, and had alot of fun along the way. This album is great for Disney history buffs since it was recorded at the nostalgic Golden Horsehoe Saloon in Disneyland and you can hear them bantering with the audience, who is going nuts over their music. The voice you hear introducing each song is none other than Ward Kimball himself. They played at different spots throughout the Disneyland park throughout the '60's. This album is one of the shortest produced by the band, but very unique due to its LIVE status. You can hear the gang joking and hamming it up with each other during tracks and inbetween. I only wish I had a video of this performance. Very clean sound on this re-release, high quality CD. The Good Time Jazz label was kind enough to reproduce not only the original cover but even the liner notes. The actual number of musicians in the group changed from time to time, but at this time it was truly 7.

Start your FF+2 collection with this recording and you will want more, they are just great fun!! Two of Disney's famous 9 Old Men are in the group, Frank Thomas (on piano) and the irrepresible band leader Ward Kimball (trombone). The cover art is a photo of the band at Disneyland in the Firetruck. Check out the cover artwork from band member and animator Ward Kimball on some of their other recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Live performance by a lively group!.......1999-12-05

In their early live performances, the Firehouse Five Plus Two mixed their music with lots of slapstick humor, so much so that their genuine musicianship was often overlooked. Most of their recordings were done in studio, and the clowning which was an essential part of the Firehouse Five experience was largely filtered out. But this album is a live performance, recorded at Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe restaurant. Leader Ward Kimball's crazy introductions, some of the asides with band members, and famous bits like dropping the anvil on somebody's foot, are all perserved here, along with some really marvelous Dixieland music. The tunes are classic Dixieland numbers, the musicianship is exceptional. More than any of their other recordings, this disk presents the whole Firehouse Five Plus Two.
