Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

AOR Essential.......2006-10-04

This is an AOR essential. The CD is worth owning for "Dorianna" & "We Are Young" by themselves. You can really hear the influences in his music. Dorianna sound like Faithfully by Journey, We Are Young sounds a little like a Motley Crue riff & of course the whole "Kyrie" by Mr. Mister on "I'll Be There". But don't let the similar sound fool you. This CD is one of the best in my collection. If you do not have it, get it while you can. Also, He replaced Ted Poley as lead singer for Danger Danger so check his work out with them as well.

Commercial hard rock at its best!.......2005-09-03

Before vocalist Paul Laine fronted the sleaze-rock metal group Danger Danger in the mid nineties, he had a brief solo career of his own. Stick it in Your Ear was his first major release. "One Step Over the Line" builds with drums and keyboards a la Van Halen's "Everybody Wants Some" before kicking you in the teeth with a thunderous riff. If that's not enough, Laine kicks you while you're down with his powerful vocals. "We Are the Young" has a chugga-chugga riff that barrels down on you like a freight train. It also has an over-the-top anthemic chorus followed by a lightening quick solo.

80s rock cliché alert: A song named specifically for a woman, "Dorianna". Warm keyboard chord changes are doubled over with piercing guitar licks. Laine is soft and subtle in his vocal delivery during the verses, but lets it all out with passion and emotion during his declaration of love. "Is It Love" mixes nature effects and cosmic keyboard effects with acoustic guitar and great vocal melodies. "Heart of America" is about how the working man is what keeps our country moving. It's a keyboard heavy anthem rocker that you could put at the end of any of your favorite 80s hero movies.

"Doin' Time" has Laine laying down some gritty vocals while he is backed up by twangy blues riffs. The energy builds with each passing verse. Do you remember Mr. Mister's "Kyrie"? (If you don't, refresh your memory with my review) I'll bet that Paul was a big fan of that song. How else could he explain "I'll Be There"? I swear it's the same cosmic intro, followed by the same bassline. Once the vocals and drums came in, I was almost convinced it was the same song.

Commercial hard rock at its best! Flawless production and over-the-top everything!

An album you`ve got to have.......2003-06-02

This is one of the best albums I have in my collection. Many great songs like "Heart of america", "Main attraction" & "One step over the line". He has a great ballad in "is it love your after". And the best power ballad ever "Dorianna". just buy it.

good indy music.......2003-04-30

As she will tell you on her website, Jengurl can sing better than your sister. Jengurl first got real national attention (such as it was) when she played 25 dates on the Lilith Fair tour, exposing her to a wider audience. She later gained many listeners on a free (and legal) MP3 website when she became the #2 most requested artist at the time. I downloaded (legally) some of her songs and liked what I heard. She has a good sound, though it may not exactly be radio friendly. Jengurl is worth checking out, and if you like what you hear, buy the album. Support independent musicians. They are just as good (if not better) than so much of the pre-packages junk we hear on the radio today

Great album...........2002-03-23

I saw her on Lilith Fair and thought she was great... I think this album came out just after that, but I'm not sure. In any case, I highly recommend it! A little folky, a little alternative, a little Texas... very cool songs and a great voice... can't wait for more.
