Album Description

There may be no other band in the world that has traced an evolution as simultaneously varied yet focused as Japan's Boredoms. Across nearly 20 years, founder and leader Eye has taken the band on the equivalent of a road trip, from the early swamps of chaos through times of tribal frenzy, oceanic tranquility, and even near prog-rock sonic constructions. On this record, two lengthy tracks manage a paradoxical blending of peaceful waves of sound with intense, churning rhythmic moments.

4 out of 5 stars Half and half.......2007-02-18

This release is a bit confusing. On the one hand, I'm in love with Seadrum - I just can't get over how intense the song is, how this intensity is sustained over an entire 23 minutes, and how drums and piano could ever fit so perfectly together.

On the other hand, House of Sun sounds nice but it becomes grating very quickly (for me, it would be a good 10 minute track). Interesting that the first time I listened to the song I heard some birds chirping outside about 12 minutes into it and I thought they were part of the music. Too bad they weren't, it actually worked really well.

Overall, however, considering this release was so out of the blue in the first case, I'm ecstatic with what Boredoms have given us here. Seadrum is just an absolute pleasure to listen to, and that is why this release is worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars stellar.......2007-02-04

The preview here is very misleading - you only hear the opening vocals of a non-vocal drum and piano track.

The walls of drumming on this first track are so compelling that you find yourself banging on things in time, riffing even, perhaps. This was the first Boredoms recording that I felt could be called beautiful.
The second piece is a hypnotic indian - inspired psychedelic trip.

Frequently, Boredoms recordings sound as if they might be the rhythm section of a larger band that somehow didn't get mic'd on the recording.
(especially super roots vol. 3 - with one track of a simplistic major guitar cord, in 3 or so keys, and not particularly impressive drumming - it sounds like a couple of kids hoping to find a bassist and singer). But not here - this time they succeed in filling the room with sound, and convincing you they belong next to some of your freejazz and heavy handed rock albums.

The boredoms are rarely predictable.

5 out of 5 stars SUGAR OVERDOSE.......2006-12-15

I HAD to write a critic, since EVERYONE is comparing this CD to the old "collage" Boredoms, LOW-RATING it, COMPLANING about the fact that the band lost its dynamic... This CD do sounds DIFFERENT, but still totally worth it. It's actually one of MY FAVORITE ever, and here's why.

A year ago, I was in TOKYO. I went to a CD store, bought that thing. Later, I took a BUS, that would RIDE me all NIGHT long. I take my seat, the bus starts, I put the CD on.

This music works! I was shocked! A perfect image of a NIGHTTIME JAPAN, with all the LIGHTS, the LAYERS, the SPEED, more and more and more! Sounds PURE, authentic, EUPHORIC. Next time you'll listen to that CD, keep this image in mind; it will definitely TAKE YOU HIGH.

1 out of 5 stars I couldnt tell it was a band .. Im sad.........2006-02-05

to me..this release sounded more like a super-roots/rebore than a boredoms release.
The pre-mixed tracks dont seem new ( think I recognize a few from previous CDS) and yea.. its boring... after so long telling everybody that these guys are a musical Icon... they have created another "PIOUGHED" (another god type band.. "who jumped the shark"? ) I can only hope the future is brighter, but my guess is that the days are gone of outstanding boredoms releases and .. hmm.. I dont know.. it makes me sad..

5 out of 5 stars Not the Boredoms of Old.......2005-12-18

If you were hoping for a return to the chaos of Pop Tatari you may be dissapointed with this album. However if you have enjoyed the direction which the Boredoms have moved for their last couple of albums you will love this disc. While their ealier material was grounded in noise punk, Super AE and Vision Creation Newsun both revealed a krautrock influence. For Seadrum/House of Sun the punk influences have been completely shed and you could be excused for thinking you were listening to a Can album. Other influences that might come to mind are Sun Ra or the No Neck Blues Band (especially on House of Sun). Be prepaired for a more spiritual vibe to these songs rather than a full on noise attack. Trance is in full effect on Seadrum as pianos and melodic vocals wash in and out of the mix. House of Sun employs use of Sitar to create a dreamlike soundscape. If you are open to psychedelic jams in the vein of Sun Ra then I would highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars worth the trip.......2005-06-18

I had high hopes for this album...esp. after reading an interview with Eye where he states that they had recorded an album on the beach with their drums in the water! so with that elaborate recording process, i was expecting some truly mindblowing cosmic out of this world unusual results. i assumed that this album would be that particular recording...but after listening to it...i just can't tell. it sounds great and the pieces represented here are well done. but if it really is a seadrum...i wish i could have heard more of the sea. (if this IS in fact, that ocean recording). (???)
first track has a great tribal feel...moving fast with lots of percussion and chanting. the piano comes into play quite a bit on this number and adds a beatiful jazzy feeling ala Alice Coltrane. the second song is a total haze out with 1,000 sitars jamming away.
not quite the record i was expecting...but then again..it's the Boredoms. i really should have known better.

5 out of 5 stars blow up your mind and fade away.......2005-03-10

I started liking the boredoms when I heard the rebore series was being mixed by unkle and dj krush. That got me interested and I checked out the albums and was impressed. So, I went and got vcn and super ae. Liked both of them and thought that vcn was the better of the two because it was less abrasive. Checked out some of the old material and realized that ae was perfectly positioned between their noise roots and their psychedelic ascent. I believe that the new stuff is better and will undoubtedly be what people hail as genius. Not that the noise is bad, but I don't think it's that special. That being said you know where I am coming from with this review.

This is further progression in the direction of psychedelia and the band actually went and sort of mimicked some of the bands of the krautrock era and created a two part (would have been broken into sides of a record back then) album completely polarized. It's similar to ash ra tempel's self-titled piece in that side one is explosive psychedelia and side 2 is a peaceful comedown.

Seadrum: Side one is mind blowing. I've had the cd for about 3 weeks and have listened to it 4 or 5 times. The first time is the best though as it will definitely catch you off-guard how far these guys have come. It begins with yoshimi crooning like a siren from the odyssey and progresses into a polyrhythmic explosion from some part of the mind that I didn't realize was there. 3 drummers lay down beats that somehow melt into each other seemlessly and it really is a trip. Then the piano comes in sparkling with crescendos and random noodlings that never lose a sense of direction. This is an awesome track and you have to hear it if you liked vcn.

House of Sun: people are going to say that they were lazy, that this is filler, blah, blah... It's soothing and transcendent. Why does everyone feel that a band always has to try to impress to be great? It is ambient atmospheric stuff. No, it's not as good as seadrum obviously, but what is. This track kinda makes you feel like seadrum blasted you out a thousand feet over the ocean and left you floating in space for house of sun to carry you along in the atmosphere.

f you can't appreciate this album because only half of it is amazing then get off your soapbox and make a full hour as good as seadrum. You know you can't. This cd is a definite classic.

4 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing.......2005-02-16

When I bought this album off ebay, i didn't know what to expect; I had heard 1 minute clips on some japaneses website I found on Google.com and heard reviews from Pitchforkmedia.com and Dustedmagazine.com and they both rivaled each other. Dusted seemed to like it, but Pitchfork gave it a D- (6.O). But I love even though I am thoroughly devoted to Pitchfork's site I bought for 40.00 dollars and all i can say is that the album is fantastic. The first song Seadrum has a very fitting title: The song is basically three drummers, one female vocalist, piano, and various electric effects such as the sound of the sea washing over the shores of some far off magical planet that is full of happy being not chained to such earthly feeling such as misery and pain. The first minute and a half is only the vocalist singing in what may be Japanese but I'm not sure. Then the srums kick in and the sea rolls in carrying with it the tinkling ivories of a concert piano. It ends at about the 24 minute mark with small creshendoes and chants. The second song, House of Sun is a mixture of sitar drones and electronic backround. There are no vocals or drums, and sounds like something Ravi Shankar would be proud of. All in all a wonderful album made only for the experimental music lovers.
