I was up late one night and caught the ending of the Carson Daly show (not my first choice to watch, but in the whee hours, you just blob in front of the TV waiting for sleep to overcome you), which is when I first heard Seymour Glass performing "Trigger Finger." Had a good voice and energy, loved the vibe of the band and the song, and looked it up the next day and got it after reading some favorable reviews.
However, after listening through it once with the anticipation of wanting to be blown away by a good fresh wind and originality in the otherwise mundane crop of wanna bes, I can't say it did much for me. I think the fellow who wrote in his review that this is just another album not too far removed from the mediocre radio pack (with a slight indie flavor) was unfortunately right, and for those who dared to compare this as in the Radiohead vein need to get their ears checked and suffered from the disillusion of just discovering something new. I don't want to discount young Seymour, perhaps he will mature with time and show us that this first album is a rough maiden voyage that will sail over more interesting waters in the future.

These guys have put together a great album. Arthur Kitchen is a great singer and the rest of the band is great as well. These guys are going to go far very soon.

I made the unfortunate mistake of trusting the amazon reviews and what some people had said in some chat rooms. The only people who would give this album 5 out of 5 stars would be people who listen to the radio regularly and were craving something slightly different.

These guys are frightfully average. You can't make radio crap good just by adding some strings (cellos, violins and such). Seymour Glass definitly prove this point.

Comparing this band to Radiohead or Led Zepplin is a complete travesty. These bands are (and were) original and different. Seymour Glass is the same radio-friendly pop with a slightly different spice thrown in. Not enough to change the flavor. Though their lead singer is above average (when considering radio music), the band successfully drags him into their mediocrity. And he melds perfectly with them.

In conclusion; This music would possibly stand out on radio stations, but to any serious (non-radio) music fan, I seriously doubt it would. If you want to buy this cd because of these reviews, I warn you to find some way to hear it first. Try to download it or something. I think the majority of you reading this review will save some money and some time.

Refreshing.......2004-09-22

This album has a refreshingly different sound. If I had to say it was similar to anything, I'd probably say radiohead, but Seymour Glass has their own unique style and does an amazing job at mixing rock with something a little electronic - capturing a beautiful haunted quality I haven't heard since Zepplin.

Michelle Swan's debut recording, "Whistling in the Dark," is a powerful work that I never tire of hearing. Her style, perhaps best described as "folk with an edge," is characterized by engaging and passionate vocals, driving acoustic guitar, and original, thoughtful lyrics, often delivered in syncopated rhythms. Many songs touch on serious and sad topics -- the end of a relationship ("Hey You, It's Me"), the estrangement of an alcoholic parent (the title cut, "Whistling in the Dark"), the death of a loved one at a young age ("Wild Stallions"), the search for love and self in all the wrong places ("Love Mirage") -- but they are never maudlin. A theme of hope and reconciliation and a sense of humor shine through. A number of fellow musicians from the Washington, D.C. area lend their talents to this recording, including Lisa Moscatiello and Rachel Cross providing backing vocals, Fred Lieder on cello, and Steve Swan on soprano saxophone. Their contributions give each cut a unique sound that augments Michelle's music and lyrics. Buy this cd and you will not be disappointed!

time spent well.......2003-01-11

Washington DC, long known for its politic-heavy punk rock (thanks mostly to indie greats Fugazi, and their label-mates on Dischord) seems like the least likely place for a band like Flume to spring from. Drummer Terry Burcham and guitarist David Nicholas are big fans of Rush, and singer Heather Nicholas falls for Yoga and John Denver. In fact, the most punk thing about the band might be their dissenting stance on commercial whaling (personally, I think anyone who doesn't go whaling for private reasons is just a monster!)

Instead, Flume rely on soft, sweeping guitar and vocal hooks stolen from old Sundays and Innocence Mission records, and a fantastically jumpy drummer that makes the band's overall sound "pop" without coming off as anything too close to a commercial ploy.

Maybe that's why Flume sound so refreshing. "Feather the Nest" rides on the kind of early-R.E.M. jangle that hasn't been seen since Grunge took over the alt-rock songbook in the early nineties. Luckily Nicholas and company didn't seem to be paying attention.

Instead, songs like "Made Up My Mind" and "My Open Question," hop around like kids in toy stores on sugar highs, while the more mid and down-tempo tracks like "Borrowed Apartments" and "True Enough" recall romantic summer nights spent in Doc Martins and deserted beaches.

There's nothing revolutionary here, but there's also nothing that sounds too contrived or indulgent. In fact, the whole of Flume, and their debut record "Note to Self" is nothing more complicated than your average everyday great neighborhood rock and roll band.

The more I listen to this CD, the more I love it. It's so rare to truly like every song on a CD, but this is one of those rare occasions. The opening dissonance of "Sailor" starts the album off letting the listener know something unique is in store. A heavenly song called "Heaven" sounds like a love song from a mother to a child (at least to me). "Medicine" is a visual song for me. It starts off quite mellow, but as the singer gets more and more needy for her medicine, I can "see" the temper tantrum of the truly addicted coming to a violent outburst.

Music and gorgeous vocals create a beautiful atmosphere. The lyrics are poetic and the whole thing is just unique in a world of bland, musical crap that for some reason millions of people would rather listen to. But, if you are not one of those, give this a listen. It's too bad none of the tracks are available here to be sampled, but try the Story of M website!
