5 out of 5 stars Brilliant sixties British R+B.......2004-05-14

The history of pop music is full of injustices, but one of them is that Cliff Bennett only has two UK top ten hits to his credit. Despite that, Cliff's music is seen as an integral part of the British sixties music scene. This twofer contains all the tracks from albums released in 1965 and 1966, which include one of those hits, a cover of the Drifters' One way love. The other (later) hit, a cover of Got to get you into my life, can be found on another twofer. Of course, there are compilations of Cliff's music that contain both of them.

Maybe it was Cliff's tendency to cover American R+B songs that limited his chart success, but I doubt it - at least in his homeland. The British charts in the sixties showed plenty of covers of American songs by British artists.

Among the covers to be found here are I can't stand it (Soul sisters), You've really got a hold on me (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles), Ain't that loving you baby (Jimmy Reed), Sha la la (Shirelles), Steal your heart away (Bobby Parker), It's all right (Curtis Mayfield), Beautiful dreamer (Stephen Foster), Mercy mercy (Don Covay), Talking about my baby (Curtis Mayfield), The pick-up (Conway Twitty), I'll take you home (Drifters), I'll be doggone (Marvin Gaye), Who's cheating who (Little Milton) and Another Saturday night (Sam Cooke).

Some people are wary of cover versions, but Cliff was brilliant at them. Other British R+B bands of the time, such as the Animals and the Spencer Davis Group, gained wider recognition, especially in America, but Cliff's music is just as good as theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Real Soul on the Subs Bench!.......2004-01-17

The plaudits for artist in the British R&B were reserved mainly for those that had residencies at the fashionable Marquee Club in London. So Georgie Fame, The High Numbers (later The Who of course), Small Faces, Chris Farlowe, Zoot Money, Geno Washington, etc. are often cited as the main conduits through which black R&B eventually gained a stronghold. And quite rightly so. However because Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers had scored two hit records which were mainly pop in flavour and had also earned their spurs in all the little dance clubs around the country, any analysis of UK R&B consigns their name to the footmarks at the bottom of the page. But turn the volume up for the first track, the Soul Sisters "I can't stand it" and for four minutes of a sadistically high tempo gospel/rock workout you realise they were something special. Bennett had an authentic R&B voice, flexible enough for a baritone croon and his trademark throaty rasp which was greatly complimented by a belligerent horn section. Their interpretations of several Impressions songs were virtually carbon copies, but by '64 who had heard the originals? The "Driving you wild" album is a collection of b-sides and also rans, but most of it meaty with a grit the younger prettier boys of UK R&B could only feebly pretend to and proved a band every bit as worthy of the admiration their Hamburg collegues the Beatles had for them. Where have all the horny horns gone?

5 out of 5 stars British sixties R+B.......2004-10-10

The history of pop music is full of injustices, but one of them is that Cliff Bennett only has two UK top ten hits to his credit, these being a cover of One-way love (Drifters) and Got to get you into my life, which Paul McCartney wrote especially for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. The Beatles also recorded the song and their version can be found on the Revolver album. Between the two top ten hits, there was one minor UK hit - I'll take you home (another Drifters cover), which is not included here.

Despite that modest chart history, Cliff's music is seen as an integral part of the British sixties music scene, possibly on the strength of his live performances. This compilation represents the best of his music. Most of the tracks here are covers of American songs so it is no surprise that Cliff made no impact in America. On the other hand, most of the Americans whose songs appear on this collection had far less success in Britain than in America.

On this collection, you will find covers of Always (a fascinating re-working of the old Irving Berlin classic), Another Saturday night (Sam Cooke), Who's cheating who (Little Milton), I can't stand it (Soul sisters), Good times (Easybeats), I take what I want (Sam and Dave), Roadrunner (Bo Diddley), When something is wrong with my baby (Sam and Dave), Ain't love good ain't love proud (Jimmy James and the vagabonds) and many others.

Some people are wary of cover versions, but Cliff was brilliant at them. Other British R+B bands of the time, such as the Animals and the Spencer Davis Group, gained wider recognition, especially in America, but Cliff's music is just as good as theirs.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Got to get him into your CD collection!".......2004-01-10

Despite possessing a gritty soulful voice to die for, always being in the company of highly accomplished musicians and a knack for choosing interesting and spirited material Cliff Bennett's career has been hamstrung by poor timing (in the superficial sense of wrong place, wrong time) and an obvious lack of original material. By the time these albums came out, 67/68 many of the original versions of the tracks covered by Bennett & the RR's were becoming much more accesible to the UK soul fan. For a time it was hard to justify Bennett's faithful reproductions when Joe Tex, Sam & Dave, Marvin Gaye and Wilson Pickett records were available at local record shops. This contributed to the Rebel Rousers demise and Cliff was never able to get his career back into the quite same momentum again. A shame. But with hindsight we can hear the quality of Bennett's vocal and the punch of his sidemen with fresh appreciation on this re-release. He was a real talent and barnstroming versions of "Takin care of woman...", "It's a wonder", The Easybeats "Good times" also show off the calibre of his musicians. The track everyone associated him with was the almost Motownesque version of "Got to you into my life" which was co-produced by Paul McCartney and is featured on this set as well. You never know, if you like these albums then you might catch him on tour early this year with another magnificent UK voice, Chris Farlowe.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant sixties British R+B.......2003-03-17

The history of pop music is full of injustices, but one of them is that Cliff Bennett only has two UK top ten hits to his credit. Despite that, Cliff's music is seen as an integral part of the British sixties music scene. This twofer contains all the tracks from albums released in 1967 and 1968, which include one of those hits, a cover of Got to get you into my life. The other (earlier) hit, a cover of the Drifters' One way love, can be found on another twofer. Of course, there are compilations of Cliff's music that contain both of them.

Maybe it was Cliff's tendency to cover American R+B songs that limited his chart success, but I doubt it - at least in his homeland. The British charts in the sixties showed plenty of covers of American songs by British artists.

This twofer is a fine showcase for Cliff's talents, even including his own self-penned song, Baby each day, which was also the B-side of Got to get you into my life. But mostly it is filled with covers. He had a penchant for Sam and Dave's sings - here you will find covers of You don't know like I know, Ease me, When something is wrong with my baby, I don't need nobody, Said I weren't gonna tell nobody and I take what I want.

Among other covers to be found here are Roadrunner (Bo Diddley), CC rider blues (Ma Rainey), Barefootin' (Zoot Money), Ain't love good ain't love proud (Jimmy James and the vagabonds), Good times (Easybeats), Close the door and Taking care of a woman is a full time job (both Joe Tex).

Some people are wary of cover versions, but Cliff was brilliant at them. Other British R+B bands of the time, such as the Animals and the Spencer Davis Group, gained wider recognition, especially in America, but Cliff's music is just as good as theirs.
