5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2007-04-22

These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.

Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.

The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.

Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".

A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.

The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07

Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.

Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.

City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Oh mannn..........2006-05-16

I'm a huge, huge fan of "Who Will Survive and What Will be Left of Them," so much that I've listened to it millions of times and have found something new and amazing to love each time. I can't even try to break down the hours I've spent listening to that CD.

I guess I'm going to have to get myself ready to do the same with this CD. I just got it today and I've listened to it three times straight, each time liking it more and more.

Honestly this is a breath of fresh air considering some recent disappointments. System of a Down's Hypnotize I guess was so good at being hypnotic or something that it convinced me it doesn't exist, because I've listened to that album many times and still have no idea how the music goes because it's so bland I stop paying attention. Tool's 10000 Days is so much like Lateralus that whenever Vicarious begins I blank out and keep thinking for a moment that I'm listening to Schism.

But Murder by Death is some very strong and wonderful music. Technically, I think "Who Will Survive" is better because there's about a million different ways to take it and it's all structured around itself, making basically the consummate concept album. This one I'm not so sure about but I'm willing to bet the more I listen the more it will provide the same reactions... just unlike Who Will Survive, it doesn't immediately strike me as a thematic album.

"Like The Exorcist..." is a fantastic CD that blends instrumental and vocal songs and shows just what Murder By Death is like. This CD is incredible, go pick it up now.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE............2005-04-08

Murder by Death is one of those bands that are impossible to label. You can quiz people after one of their shows, and everyone will have an opinion on what kind of band they are. They blend emo, country, rock. They are bizarre, Gothic, jarring, and melodic.
I took to this band as soon as I heard the first track of this CD. I've always been into ambient, emotional music. I admit, I held my breath until I heard the vocalist, and he does not disappoint. Best thing is, when you go see MBD, they are very approachable. We actually had dinner with them before the show.
If you are a fan of bands like The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Neurosis....anything experimental and progressive, then you will like MBD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and original band, now called Murder By Death.......2003-09-25

I saw this band play live with Thursday, and they were incredible. Saying that I was totally blown away would be an understatment. Everyone in the crowd was shocked at how good a band that came on stage with a drummer, cello, keyboard, bass and guitar from Indiana could be. I didn't think that music this lush and structured and beautiful could be made by anyone. I went to the show expecting this band to be another mediocre cookie cutter hardcore band, and I was astonished at how moved I was by their music. Needless to say, I bought everything they had for sale that night...shirts, posters, CDs everything. This CD does not dissapoint, as it delivers rich and moving pieces of music, ranging from long winding instrumentals to stripped down rockers. There is so much to be heard with their music, and it creates a new listening experience every time you listen. This album is so deep and so beautiful, it's a must have. Give it a try and I promise you'll like it.

PS Their new band name is Murder By Death and they have a new CD coming out within the next month on eyeball records. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Like Heaven.......2003-07-02

Like heaven flowing endlessly into my ears. This album is simply amazing. Although their is no such thing as "Little Joe Gould" as the band is now called "Murder By Death." They sell this cd with a Murder By Death sticker on it now. Back to the music... the cello blends perfectly with the dark mood of this cd. The keyboard does so as well. The singer's voice is exceptionally great and just adds to the greatness of this cd. I recommend you buy this now and expand your pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Finally available..........2002-04-30

Finally available! While the movie was laughed at due to it's mishmash script and un-convincing acting. The only memorable element that came out from the whole thing was the soundtrack. "Pazuzu (Theme From The Exorciste II)" & "Interrupted Melody" still sound haunting today. This is one of Ennio Morricone best works, and I'm glad that it's been re-released and remastered.
Give it a shot!

4 out of 5 stars One of the finest of Morricone's "Lost " Scores..........2001-06-10

Though John Boorman's original vision for the sequel may be lost forever, leaving us with the mess today that goes by the title of EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC, the best thing to come out of the whole experience was one of the most haunting themes composed by Morricone, the last of the old-style film scoring masters. The score is actually much better than the film it was written for, and even helps redeem the film in some ways. (The hilariously over-the-top disco version of "Pazuzu's Theme" is forgiveable, considering how bad the film itself is.) For the beauty of the Main Title and "Suspended Melody," though, the purchase of this soundtrack is definitely worth it.

Richard H Kirk and DJ Parrot made this techno album at the turn of the 90s and it's very easy to see this. The synths sound gloopy and with the odd wheep too but having said that it holds up well unlike similar records from it's time which sound hopelessly dated full stop. This, although getting on a bit, still has a few ideas in the tank that could inspire a few of the new guns a thing or two about the production. One thing you could say is that it's very precise in it's production. Not polished but not quite messy if you know what I mean. An enjoyable release nevertheless that may only be appreciated by those who have a passion for techno music

      2 out of 5 stars Curiosity Pieces.......2006-04-26

Way back when the movie was a hit, Warner Brothers intended to release a soundtrack that included dialogue from the film. It has been reported by William Friedkin that Mercedes McCambridge refused to grant her permission and that project never made it to light. This record, which has been around since the Seventies, contains maybe only two pieces that made it into the film. The rest of the music is new classical: dense, discordant, intense and mostly unpleasant. Some will appreciate the talent involved, but it is not the sort of music most people would want to listen to while reading or dusting the house. Whether or not it might have worked in the film is beside the point. It wasn't, and so calling this recording a motion picture soundtrack is misleading.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to rate..........2005-07-27

I bought this CD for the Penderecki...I'm a big fan of his dissonant music, and so I love Polymorphia, the String Quartet and the Kanon (Canon). The Penderecki pieces dominate the score, and timewise probably take up about half the disc, considering it's only 44 minutes long.

I also enjoy the Crumb and Henze piece, although they're quite short. (If you're feeling drowsy and need to be alert...play the Crumb piece at full volume...guaranteed to wake the dead!)

I would give this disc a 5 star rating except for:

      1) The price
      2) The short playing time
      3) The fact that it's only available as a Japanese import, and the booklet is written totally in Japanese!

My advice is that if you can find the Penderecki pieces elsewhere (I know you can find the SQ...the others may be more difficult since many Penderecki discs seem to be out of print) then I'd bypass this disc.

If money is not a concern (and you're fluent in Japanese!) then I think it's an excellent disc and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars PEA SOUP AND CHARM!.......2003-11-26

NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS BABE! Still ticks after three decades - and an absolute MUST for the collector. SOUND QUALITY IS EXCELLENT ON A GOOD SYSTEM [should be fine on all systems] and just enough to tickle the senses.

GREAT - RARE FIND! [not quite sure why its not locally available though ...................]

2 out of 5 stars Exorcist CD: The Version You've Never Heard (& STILL Haven't).......2002-06-06

As an ardent and lifelong fan of cinema and all things horror, I had been looking for the soundtrack to this film for quite some time. I was quite excited to see it pop up as a "You Might Also Enjoy" response to a previous Amazon purchase, although more than a little daunted by the price...but I figured what the heck, I'm STILL listening to the Psycho soundtrack after four years, I'll certainly get my money's worth out of it. Boy was I wrong!

First, the liner notes are in Japanese - and only the track names were in katakana, so I couldn't make heads or tails of anything but the titles ("TU-BU-RA BE-RU-ZO" (Tubular Bells), etc.). Yes, it's an import, but if you were hoping for insider insights from the packaging, better brush up on your kanji.

Second, the tracks are exactly what the CD title says: musical EXCERPTS. All the cuing, level dynamics, etc. are intact - these are not the evenly modulated source recordings of the score, they are the non-dialogue, non-sound-effects sound tracks from the movie, with all the stops and starts and dynamics added on top of the original recordings to suit the action in the movie. For long periods at a time, there will be EXTREMELY low or even NO sound coming from your speakers (when Friedkin was putting the sound track together, he wanted periods of ABSOLUTE silence to creep out the audience; to this end, he not only recorded nothing onto the sound track, he had the engineers put TAPE over those portions of the celluloid so that there would be absolutely no audio output! This is great and innovative cinematography, but makes for a lousy CD - I really don't relish paying an arm and a leg for NO audio data on a disc!). Then, in the space of about three nanoseconds, the volume will swell to tweeter-busting levels.* I found myself forced to play remote jockey so much I could never sit back and enjoy the music.

None of this is to detract from the brilliance of the score (and please note, this is NOT a Michael Oldfield work, as a previous reviewer described - he contributed the song everyone knows from the movie, Tubular Bells, but did not compose the film score). All of these tracks successfully contribute to the film's brutally suspenseful effect on the viewer. But the tracks, as delivered on this CD, were never meant to be experienced independent of the visuals. This is why smart marketers will put "The Original Soundtrack" on film score albums (and PUT the original soundtrack on the disc in the first place), so that people will know the recording is the ORIGINAL recording of the music, and not the highly remixed version used on the actual film.

So, if you want to spend an hour jamming furiously on the Up and Down volume buttons of your stereo remote, please be my guest and buy this CD, but know that mine is collecting dust on a shelf, where it's been since immediately after the first listening. If you are a true fan of the movie, you probably have the DVD - check to see if your version has the music as an isolated track. If so, you have no need of this CD.

*On a technical note, for those of you postulating these level problems are the fault of my equipment, I have a high-end Denon Dolby Surround receiver and a Kenwood pre-amp, and used my [expensive] Sennheiser headphones to listen to the CD. Not sound engineer-level stuff by any means, but certainly good enough to be able to give a decent listen, so I would have to fault the CD, not the equipment, in this case....

5 out of 5 stars What are you waiting for?.......2002-05-03

Chances are, if you're interested in the soundtrack to this excellent film, then you're a big fan and should just buy it.

      It's that simple.

Scary? Uh, you better believe it. You may not have noticed all of the music on this disc while watching the film, but much of it was there, beneath the layers of scary atmosphere and creepy visuals.

It's well known that director William Friedkin literally threw Lalo Schifrin's original score out the door when he heard it. Friedkin then went out and bought albums of the type of music he wanted and selected these 'pindrops'. The result is fantastic.

Notice that another great horror film, Kubrick's The Shining, uses the film of Penderecki to great effect. 'Polymorphia' is used in both films. An amazing piece with an absolutely incredibly buildup from silence to a nearly deafening wall of tension and the slow, deliberate trickly-like sound of bows slapping violin strings.

'Night of the Electric Insects' is perfect if you really want to scare the pants off someone. Screeeeeeech!

This is a great disc. Why, oh why, is it only an import in America? Makes no sense. Nevertheless, it's worth the extra money for the import.

An absolute MUST for any die-hard Exorcist fan.

      4 out of 5 stars My neighbor.......2004-09-21

Elizabeth Smart hangs around in Williamsburg. I think she lives on 666 Bedford Avenue if you want to drop by. She has done a lot of photography. She played drums in some indie band. Now she is a solo artist. This record seems like a relaxed fun affair. She is a cool chick: sort of like PJ Harvey and Liz Phair used to be. She titled this record after her favorite movie, The Exorcist. That is my favorite too. There is a secret ska influence. There are song titles like "You Look Like Hell Tonight." Elizabeth is not nice. She doesn't want you to like her. She is sort of like Simple Kid. I like her music anyway because she is a girl and probably pretty hot looking. I thought that I saw her the other day on Lorimer Street, but wasn't sure if it was her. I yelled out "Elizabeth" and waited for a reaction. That is so embarrassing when they don't respond.
