5 out of 5 stars Buffy Sainte-Marie's Wheel Spins And Spins..........2005-03-07

I have never understood why Buffy Sainte-Marie never managed to permanently lodge herself in the American listening public's imagination the way, say, Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell, or The Beatles did. There's no good reason she should not have been a HUGE star. No, scratch that; there is one very obvious reason: too much truth. Buffy never minced words, choosing, rather, to serve them up raw, the good with the bad, the painful with the beautiful. Just listen to "My Country `Tis Of Thy People You're Dying," which (agreeing with other reviewers here), should be offered up in high school history classes as an illustration of how distorted and biased most commonly used textbooks are. Many years after first hearing this album, the song "Little Wheel Spin & Spin" undulates with electrifying power, and sends shivers up and down my spine as Buffy sings, in her distinctive, trembling voice "...add your straw to the camel's load -- pray like hell when the world explodes..." given the state of the planet right now, these words ring with more resonance than ever. And hear how this great woman plays that acoustic guitar of hers; as good or better than most men in the field; certainly as muscular and energetic. There is a pulse and a rhythm to these songs, whether they are gently rocking country-blues tunes, such as "Rolling Log Blues," or haunting story songs like "Sir Patrick Spens" or "House Carpenter." Where the early Joan Baez would prettily sing a folk ballad without being particularly adventurous, musically, Buffy Sainte-Marie plays with her phrasings and with rhythms so that even the most commonly interpreted folk songs acquire new dimensions. You've never heard a "Waly Waly" or a "Lady Margaret" quite like the versions offered here. Buffy infuses everything with her own, highly individual style and creative flare, letting anger and passion and alarm show their edges in her voice. (Just so you know, this is no dissing of Ms. Baez; I'm a devoted, lifelong fan of hers; the differences between these two singers, however, are like night and day).

Seven of the twelve songs here are Sainte-Marie originals, and two others are traditional tunes with original, new and/or added lyrics. The remaining three are old folk melodies given the Buffy treatment. Throughout the album, added instrumentation is sparse and yet essential. Bruce Langhorn's smooth, expressive electric guitar and Russ Savakus' bass add depth to the title song and a few others, but do not distract from the true attractions of this music, which are Buffy's voice and her own guitar. An instrumental ensemble creates an interesting change of pace and mood in "Timeless Love," Patrick Sky and Eric Weissberg play guitar here and there, too, but the overall effect is one of perfect control over production values; nothing overproduced or commercial about this album, which, getting back to the point of this review, may be one reason more people haven't heard Buffy Saint-Marie. She is not interested in providing a manufactured image of chic or cool, or a safe escape from the real world. A true artist in every sense of the word. I like all of Buffy Sainte-Marie's albums. Like Joni Mitchell, she constantly experiments and each record is different from another. If asked to pick just one Buffy Sainte-Marie album as my choice as the most important and powerful, "Little Wheel Spin And Spin," would probably be at the top of the list. If you are a listener with a sense of adventure, and you are just now falling in love with Buffy, check out "Illuminations," a ground-breaking, ahead-of-its-time electronic album from 1969, and "Moonshot," a straight ahead rock and roll album from the early `70's. Buffy constantly surprises and never disappoints...

5 out of 5 stars Little Wheel Spin and Spin.......2005-01-29

I agree with the reviewer who said that "My Country Tis of Thy People You're Dying" should be played in history classes as it offers another, more accurate account of the settling of this wonderful country, an account from the point of view of its indigenous people. From a musical mindset, Buffy Sainte-Marie was and is still an all time favorite. Her unique repertoire, from topical, protest music to old Childe ballads, she moves music above the ordinary and makes it an event. Whether she sings her own songs or those of Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, she delivers. I first remember hearing her sing a song from a later album, entitled simply Buffy--not yet available on CD. The song is "Sweet Little Vera." I saw her perform this on television around 1974, and I was mesmerized! She sang and danced on stage like a Native North American Tina Turner. This 17 year old fellow has been a fan ever since. In short, anything you buy by Buffy Sainte-Marie will delight. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Great folksinger!.......1999-09-10

My Country Tis of Thy People You're Dying should be played in American History classes. Men of the Fields is a simple, heart felt song of an age that is slipping away on us. Buffy is an awesome folk singer and writer. Her range of style, voice, and material makes her great.

5 out of 5 stars One of Buffy's Best Albums.......1999-07-28

This album contains nothing but hits. An excellent collection of folk songs for anyone who loves music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!!!.......2007-04-17

Another great Hoyt Axton double re-release that you don't want to miss. "Pistol Packin' Mama" will keep you awake and poppin' your fingers. "Spin of the Wheel" was Hoyt's last album, it contains songs you might not know, but sure will enjoy! Try "Mr Winchester's Gun" for clever word play and a great story line! This is another super CD for the long haul; you won't get tired of this one either! Buy it while you can before it's gone.

5 out of 5 stars Really great album.......1999-10-15

Spin of the Wheel has some of Hoyt's best material on it. I can listen to this CD over and over and never get tired of it. Pistol Packin' Mama isn't as good, but it too has some good songs on it. Because this is a double album, it's really a bargain!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-10-10

Everyone thought that after being dropped by Virgin in the middle 0f 2001 that they had heard the last of Bellefire. Wrong. They lost a member, gained new record deal and here they are in 2004 with a brand new album on release. Unlike the girl's debut album After the Rain, the tracks are more versatile, vocals are as tight as ever and the girls are far more confident.
Say Something Anyway - the lead single, written by Jorgen Eloffssen. An upbeat pop number. It opens with the guitar and drums thumping in giving the song some real oompf. 10/10

You were meant for me - Cover of the Jewel song. Showcases the girls vocals really well. A really nice laid-back sing-a-long tune. Video for this was shot in Miami so a possible single. 9/10

Spin the Wheel - 2nd single. A really upbeat and funky guitar track. This is similar to the Bryan Adams and Mel C song in some respects. One of my favourites as it's extremely catchy 10/10

What hurts the most - Emotional ballad. I think of it as a slower melody of Duff's come clean but a faster vocal arrangement. Really catchy melody and the lyrics are easy to relate to. 10/10

Nobody Loves me like you do - upbeat no. Probably my least favourite, it has a reall cool chorus but there is something about the verses I'm not keen on. 8/10

Damn - fan favourite. Opens with an old fashion intro and then thunps right in. It's not fast, it's not slow it's both. One of those X-Factor songs and a potential single. 9/10

Pieces of you - Gorgeous ballad. Showcases the girls vocals extremely well. The production really makes this song. Love this song. 10/10

Sold out - The most upbeat pop track. American mainstream pop about their ex-label. Really cachy, easy to dance to and to sing a long to. 10/10

Can't cry hard enough - Love this song. Ciara sounds absolutely amazing vocally in this song, especially in the chorus. Gives me goosebumps. 10/10

I need to be next to you - Nice little mid-tempo track. Not the best song but it has something about it where you don't want to skip it. Sure it's a cover, but it really fits in with bellefire's style. 9/10

Stay - A stunning ballad. Ciara once again sounds amazing on the chorus. Sounds better acoustically than the studio version. It has the most gorgeous melodies. 10/10

I'll never get over you getting over me - Cover of the Expose song. Nice enough ballad but I don't think it fits into the Bellefire style much. 8/10

Don't know why - My favourite song on the album. This has no.1 written all over it. An amazing ballad but it's not like otheer ballads, it mixes between ballad, midtempo and upbeat and the girls harmonies are spot on on the chorus. No words can describe how much I love this song. 10+

Not Letting Go - ballad, B-Side to the Spin the Wheel single. This is more similar to the material on the After the Rain album that Spin the Wheel. It's nice enough but it kinda passes you by. 8/10

To be with you - Once again Ciara delivers with the vocals. This is a really nice mid-tempo song and exclusive to the Japanese version of the album. 9/10

You may be thinking after that review that Bellefire do ballads but their ballads are like no other. They are not power ballads or anything like that. Think the Corrs meets the Bangles with a hint of Fleetwood Mac and Wilson Phillips and you have Bellefire. They've been together for years been through the ups and downs of the industry but their sticking to their sound. If you want a girl group who will be around for years to come as they have been together 4 years already, you want a girl group who not only can sing, sing live, play instruments and write their own songs? Then Bellefire are for you

5 out of 5 stars The Best Pop-rock album of 2004!!!.......2004-07-18

I bought a copy of bellefire's second CD "spin the wheel" yesterday at a local store. It was imported from the EU and I'm glad that I'm one of the first few to hear it. Wow is the initial reaction when I heard this CD. Bellefire has improved so much in their vocal abilities since their debut album "After the rain". Every song is worth a listen. They also did the cover songs justice by singing them beautifully. Overall, this album is a must-listen for all pop-rock, Irish-loving, easy-listening audience.

Track 1: Say something anyway (10/10)

As most of you have heard it on radio, this is a great song to be a released as bellefire's first single.

Track 2: You were meant for me (9/10)

This is a cover of Jewel's hit song. It's well-done in the bellefire's style.

Track 3: Spin the wheel (10/10)

Another uplifting tune from bellefire. Probably the next single for the girls? Excellent guitar and vocal arrangements.

Track 4: What hurts the most (8/10)

A sad song about a broken relationship that is dedicate to those who have been hurt by love.

Track 5: Nobody loves me like you do (9/10)

A catchy pop song that signifies bellefire's original sound. You'll love it instantly when you hear it.

    Track 6: Damn (10/10)

The mixture of the heavy rock beats and tender voices of bellefire makes this song unique in its own way. Bellefire let their voices loose in this song.

Track 7: Pieces of you (10/10)

A song to slow things down after a busy day. The power of bellefire's voices is that it soothes one's mind with beautiful harmonies, without sounding too over-rated. Love this song!

    Track 8: Sold out (10/10)

The rockiest and angriest song in bellefire's album! "Sold out" is the ideal song that bellefire should release in America if they want to conquer it. It is pure American Pop!

    Track 9: Can't cry hard enough (10/10)

Sounds familiar to those who listen to songs of the 80s and 90s? Another excellent cover song by Bellefire who conveys the sad feelings of a break-up.

Track 10: I need to be next to you (10/10)

A Diane Warren penned song that was first sung by Leigh Nash of Six-pence none the richer. Bellefire has added a pop flavor in this song which is going to appeal to masses.

    Track 11: Stay (9/10)

An average song that is brought to life by bellefire. Simple yet beautiful.

Track 12: I'll never get over you getting over me (10/10)

Wow, a cover song of a 80s girl-band "Expose" that sounds just as original when bellefire sings it. I cannot imagine any girl-band covering this song except for bellefire. Ironically, they sound exactly and so different from expose at the same time.

    Track 13: Don't know why (9/10)

No, this is not a Norah Jones' cover. It's a totally different song about loss and confusion.

Having seen them perform at one of westlife concerts in 2002, I'm more than happy to see a girl-band like bellefire survive the highs and lows of music business. Thumbs up for bellefire! Hope to see you in Singapore someday perhaps?

            Album Description

Irish superstars Bellefire (cheekily referred to as the new Corrs) produce beautiful songs full of timeless melodies & breathtaking hooks that are easy to fall in love with. Nowhere is this more apparent than on new single `Spin The Wheel', an upbeat pop classic that'll see the girls move beyond the imitator comparisons to become respected artists in their own right. Two tracks, 'Spin The Wheel' (Single Version) & 'Not Letting Go'. East West. 2004.
