5 out of 5 stars Rapping for Jesus is really where it's at!.......2007-07-19

Well I gotta say that I love this Cd. I myself like more of the "harcore" rap and beats, so it really its home to the listener! Lecrae is one of my favorite "christian" rappers as he is very real, his spirit is in tune with God, raps very well and spits it hard!

It seems this is the music we need in todays society as it has become so perverse. I used to have about 500 rap albums, but I don't even this to them anymore. Everything I listen to now is filled with the holy spirt and this is the way it will stay.

I thank God for people such as Trip Lee, Lecrae and other various artists who rap for God and continue to do so! It sounds great! I just hope more people listen to this instead of all the other garbage out there.

All I say is keep it up! Bring the beats, and the verses! Don't stop until the casket drop, lol.!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars GOES HARD.......2007-07-12

5 out of 5 stars Great Album with Sold Doctrine.......2007-07-07

When I first heart that reach records would put out an album on the 13 Pauline Epistles, I wondered what it would be like; I also was excited. The talk about it was huge, so I made the step to get the album. This album has really encouraged 1. Self-Examination: As a Christian man looking at these surveys and seeing whether my life matches up to what they are speaking, whether in good or bad ways, 2. Study of the Word of God: They emphasize that their "surveys" of the Epistles are just that "surveys" not expositions - in hopes that it would lead you to "Dig In" to the word (Track 2 w/ Trip Lee). 3. Encourage other believers: Pauls epistles were an encouragement to other believers, even though Paul was imprisoned most of the time he still wrote with a fervency, not for his own glory but for the Glory of God! This is a thread throughout the entire epistles and the album seems to capture that thread. There are many other things you can pick up and that i could write about, but all in all, great album to buy for the sake of study and to "bump" on the road. Thank you to all the reach Fam for their efforts. ***NOTE*** it does not just stop with the album, look for the curriculum coming soon - it takes the album to a different leve, to my understanding it also includes some dramatic themes.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-25

All I can really say is that this CD is amazing! A few years back I listened to secular rap because Gospel hip hop really was not that great in comparison. Now I got rid of the secular because I truly feel that the 116 clique has better music. Not to mention that their lyrics glorify God and teach the listener life lessons. The cross movement's album history is also a really good hip hop album with Christian lyrics. Buy these CD's up. "Dig In" and "Get Loose" are my two favorites, but the whole album is solid.

5 out of 5 stars Masterfully done.......2007-06-17

This album is masterful. It's:

1) Christ centered. The artists do an amazing job of expositing the 13 letters of Paul given the study that they put in before making the songs. They all come very knowledgable about the conditions at which the letters were written and do a great job of breaking down the text of the letters into a culturally-relevant language. I've never heard the Word being spit this way on an album. You get background, teaching, and application from this.

2) Filled with talented MCs (Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii, Sho, FLAME, 1-Lyfe, Dillon Chase, JSon) who bring lyrical fire on each track. There is no weak MC on this track - and the lyrics are meaningful.

3) Diverse in style with the beats and sound each track. You get the dirty south sound, east coast beats, nice slow jams, R&B-esque tracks, the midwest sound... it's all in there and each artist does a great job of using the beats with their flow. It's balanced as well: No one style dominates or one MC dominates (like Lecrae on the 1st 116 Clique album).

If you like high-quality lyrics and production, diversity, balance, heart, soul, passion, and something that edifies you and challenges you, this is it. ...And it's all for the glory of God.

Good tracks to preview: 'Dig in' by Trip Lee, 'Philippians - To Live is Christ' by Trip Lee, 'Galatians - Justified' by Sho.

It's hard to tell where the traditional ends and the original begins in the music of Eilen Jewell, a sweet-voiced young singer who steeps her material in the hard times of old, reviving the stories and musical styles of the Depression. On her own "Rich Man's World," she casts herself as a "lonely rambler girl" while conjuring comparisons with Gillian Welch. Another original, "In the End," sounds uncannily like Lucinda Williams, while a revival of Eric Andersen's train-hopping "Dusty Boxcar Wall" and the double-entendre blues of the traditional "If You Catch Me Stealing" reinforce the sense of Jewell as a musical throwback to a time before she was born. Yet there are timeless pleasures here as well: a bittersweet reading of Charlie Rich's "Thanks a Lot," an understated, harmony-laden rendition of Bob Dylan's "Walking Down the Line," the sultry cantina twang of her original "Too Hot to Sleep." When the musical arrangements aren't generic Hot Club and the songs seem more like role-playing, Jewell sounds like a singer with enough promise to develop her own identity. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Hawk Nelson Rocks!.......2007-05-03

Hawk Nelson is incredible! If you like Punk Rock, you MUST Buy this CD! They are the ultimate christian punk rock bad! Check out their other CD "smile its the end of the world" as well. Both Sweet albums. these guys are extremely talented, with fun, upbeat songs.

5 out of 5 stars Music to walk to.......2007-02-09

As a college student I spend an overwhelming amount of time treking across my university's campus. Without music to accompany my journeys, I believe I might go insane from all the stress of my classes. Luckily, this album is full of nothing but satisfying music that does well to calm my nerves in between my periods of education. I enjoyed Hawk Nelson's music on this album so much that I went ahead and purchased their other album, Smile it's the End of the World, and was not dissappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2006-12-02

I just saw these guys in concert, and they are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone who likes Punkish types of rock, but aren't willing to delve into the dark avenues thereof. If you're wishing to go up on the "Hard Rock Scale for Christian Bands", I would recommend Family Force 5. If you're wishing to go a little softer, I would recommend The Afters. Finally I find a few bands that aren't all the same!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Debut-A Little Shallow on the Lyrics Side of Things.......2006-09-18

Well, as Hawk Nelson's first album, I'd have to say it's VERY good. The songs are catchy, fast, and for the most part a good comfortable rock sound that most people should enjoy almost upon putting it in.

The only complaint I have about this CD is the lyrics. While they are fun, and sometimes deeply meaningful, I'm still dissapointed with the lack of God's name in lots of these songs. I would say, (lyric wise) your best bet in Christian "punk" is Stellar Kart, but these lyrics are definately deeper than just about any of Reliant K's "another Christian "punk" band" albums, and for that reason, I think you could do MUCH worse than picking up Letters to the President, as it is a lot of fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-02-06

I had never heard of Hawk Nelson before I attended Winter Jam 2006 not too long ago, and I was impressed. They have very catchy songs, and it was amazing to see their bizzare personalities on stage. They sang 'Every Little Thing', which was very good, and 'Take Me' which is now one of my favorite songs. The beats they have in their music stick in my mind, I love them. Their music isn't purely Christian, however, they are leaning more towards the secular side of Christian rock. But, I would rather listen to secular Christian rock than regular rock. I enjoy listening to their music, and I will continue to follow them. Definately worth the money.

This is really some great CHILL music! I think we babyboomers could all enjoy some tunes that can relax the soul in this hectic, fast paced world in which we live. I often listen to the "Chill" station on my Sirius Radio and I picked up on this band immediately. This is the first CD of theirs that I have purchased and I am simply AMAZED at how good ALL the tracks are. A great group from Denmark and the female vocalist has a voice from heaven!!

A tightly woven string of music weaves the listener into the fabric of Bliss. Slightly reminiscent of B-Tribe in some instances; sometimes delving into a jazzier sound at others. This album is well-produced and listeners in my home always ask,"Who IS that and where can I find that CD?"

    5 out of 5 stars blissed out.......2006-12-02

Others have mentioned how relaxing this CD is but no one has mentoned how sensual and erotic it is. "Kissing" is a song you have to listen to while kissing to fully appreciate. I leave the rest to the listener's imagination but recommend keeping the CD in the bedroom. It's a masterpiece of mood and emotion.

John Michael Montgomery has weathered a number of personal and professional storms since his 1992 debut, but a label change in 2000 jumpstarted his career, and now the title track of Letters from Home has made him a contender again. While producer Byron Gallimore stocks the album with substantial songs ("Look at Me Now," "Cool") that contain a heart-tugging nugget of private truth, it's "Letters from Home" that will leave you bawling. Whether you're pro- or antiwar doesn't matter: its strength lies in the way it puts a personal face on a faraway army. There's more eloquence in this soldier's internal monologue than there is in the text of the letters, and Montgomery's vocal--as lean as a G.I.'s rations--drives home the authenticity of the moment, which unveils so many hidden hurts and disappointments and fears among his platoon. Like "Good Ground," the song that precedes it, "Letters" points up the importance, responsibility, and identity of belonging. Country music handles this theme better than any other genre, and Montgomery, now a family man himself, imbues his readings not just as a hit maker, but as a man who knows his own place in the parade of life. And just maybe, country music history. --Alanna Nash

Letters from home is an awesome CD! We had two soldiers visit us who just got home from Iraq ~ I bought one of these CDs for each of them. We all listened to "Letters from Home" (the title track, LOL) and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

I'd buy the CD for that one song alone ~ EXCEPT that ALL the songs are great!!!! Soooo...buy it! :)

4 out of 5 stars Montgomery Delivers Heartfelt "Letters".......2005-04-18

Prime Cuts: Cool, Letters from Home, That Changes Everything

Musically, the family resemblance between John Michael and brother Eddie of Montgomery Gentry fame runs thin. While Eddie Montgomery is a heel kicking honky tonk troubadour, John Michael is the personification of gentility. While Montgomery Gentry has blasted the speakers of country radio with defiant anthems like "She Couldn't Change Me" and "Hell Yeah," big brother Montgomery sings about roping the moon and covering his significant other with kisses.

Not surprisingly, nostalgia, sentimentality and introspection earmarked John Michael's latest album "Letters from Home." In fact, other than a few rollicking honky tonk numbers, most of "Letters from Home" deal with the affairs of the heart. Best of which is the excellent title cut as well as lead off single, "Letters from Home." Riding along some gentle guitar picking and plaintive sounding dobro, Montgomery sings about a G.I. savoring correspondence from his parents and loved ones while being far away from home. An engaging number that has done its share of currying favor with country radio, "Letters from Home" finds Montgomery back into the top 10 terrain after a 4 year hiatus. Less poignant, but equally sentimental is the amicable "Look at Me Now."

Ultra cool is Harley Allen and Brice Long's ballad "Cool"--- a cautionary tale of a father warning his rebellious teenager to take stock of his rowdy ways for what goes around comes around. Replete with some fine fiddling, Montgomery's performance on "Cool" is nothing less than stellar--sincere, reflective and entrancing. Though "Cool" first appeared on Montgomery's previous greatest hits collection, it's such a standout that I was glad it got revived. Paternal fidelity is also the theme of the album's opener "Good Ground." Though set at a faster tempo with some big booming drums, it's one of the most country efforts Montgomery has tackled in a while.

Billy Yates and Jim Collins' "Break This Chain" is another superb country offering. Almost delivered as a prayer, "Break This Chain" expresses the desperate plea of an alcoholic for deliverance for the sake of his family. To my ears, this is one of the most moving tear jerker I have had heard in a while. Nevertheless, not all is sad. The hopeless romantic can put their fainting heart to ease: "That Changes Everything," penned by David Lee and Tony Lane (who were also responsible for crafting the title cut) is a gentle yet beautiful ballad extolling love's power to "change everything."

However, not everything works here. Montgomery's sensitivity can work against him when the material is not right. I find Paul Overstreet and Marty Dodson's "It Rocked" excruciatingly sappy. "It Rocked" celebrates the milestones of life: first love, first car, first job.... Come on, I think this is a little too maudlin! I am already starting to get a tooth ache, it's just too sugary. I am sure Montgomery or/and producer Bryon Gallimore must have felt that way too. So, to boost Montgomery's machismo, we have the propulsive honky tonk number "Goes Good With Beer." With Montgomery's crisp free suit and his family man image portrayed in the other songs, I find it hard to believe when Montgomery sings about hanging with his crazy buddies and those "pretty girls" in a smoke filled tavern as he professes in "Goes Good With Beer." A tad more believable is the funky yet somehow raunchy "Little Devil"-though "Little Devil" sounds like a recycle of Montgomery's number 1 hit, "Be My Baby Tonight."

Aside from these few detours, "Letters from Home," as the title suggests, appeals to the heart. With country radio's incessant appetite for heart tugging tunes, "Letters from Home" could easily be one of Montgomery's most radio friendly albums. In fact, I believe this album is hued with chart hits. This is a much welcomed return to form for Montgomery.

5 out of 5 stars MORE THAN LETTERS..........2004-09-16

I admit that I bought this album for the title track alone. After all, had that been the only good track on this CD I still would have felt that it was worth my money.

But the title track is just the beginning for this fine country offering by John Michael Montgomery. I found myself listening to and enjoying every track on LETTERS FROM HOME. Montgomery's smoother-than-silk voice is one of the finest in country music today and his straight-forward approach to his music comes through in every note. You won't want to miss this one.

    THE HORSEMAN

5 out of 5 stars A good, solid country music album!.......2004-09-12

John Michael Montgomery has asserted himself as a radio mainstay in the nineties. Though he got little airplay since then--"The Little Girl" is the only hit I can think of--this album promises to deliver him back into the spotlight. He has left behind the twang of his previous efforts, and has chosen a good selection of substantial, well-written and BELIEVEABLE material.

LETTERS begins with "Good Ground," an uptempo number about family and love that continues on most of the other songs. The title track is a gut-wrenching number (admit it, you had a tear in your eye when you first heard it) that indeed stands out, but is not the only good tune on here. "Look At Me Now" is a confessional number about growing older, while "Cool" deals with the consequences faced in life.

"That's What I'm Talkin About" is a romp that manages to skewer gossipers AND contain suggestive lyrics (a similar vein is followed on "Little Devil"). "Goes Good With Beer" is destined to become a honky-tonk classic, while "Break This Chain" is pretty much it's opposite--the story of a man from a long line of alcoholics praying for the strenght to defeat his curse. "That Changes Everything" shows us the surprise directions life can take, while "It Rocked" lets us know that life's greatest moments and sensations come from the simple things.

LETTERS FROM HOME is easily John Michael Montgomery's best album. While Montgomery has situated himself as frontman for radio-friendly music (ironically, big-brother Eddie is doing the same thing for outlaw country), he shows us that he does indeed know what a good country song is about...His voice is neither world-class nor run-of-the-mill, but he uses it for all it's worth, and it's worth a pretty penny. LETTERS FROM HOME will make you cry, make you laugh, make you sing, and even--if you're really in the mood--make you dance. A great album by one of today's best performers.

I bought this album only knowing one song from it, "Denis." I knew though, that the album had to have other great songs since "Denis" is such a fun pop song. The French really makes it unique. I liked "Detroit 442" the first time I heard it. The entire album is put together so well, and there is so much energy in all the songs that you can't help but enjoy listening to it! "Love at the Pier" is an all around fun song as is "Contact in Red Square." "Presence, Dear" is an easy-going song. The bonus tracks on this CD are really great as well. My favorite is "Scenery." It is also interesting to listen to "Once I Had a Love" since it eventually evolved into the phenomenon "Heart of Glass." "Plastic Letters" is a superb prelude to "Parallel Lines."

    5 out of 5 stars Bang bang you're dead.......2006-02-18

A true classic; Deborah Harry has never been better, sliding into "Fan Mail" like liquid mercury, she blasts out of it like a siren; breezy pop "Denis," "Love at the Pier" and "I'm On E" presages later work; PL showcases the most clever and inventive group of the last 30 years -- e.g., the beguiling "Cautious Lip," downright scary "Detroit 442" and "Bermuda Triangle Blues," and best of all, Jimmy Destri's amazing, pulsing and enigmatic "Contact In Red Square," Destri's magnificent keyboard, amazing back-up vocals, and Clem Burke's phenomenal rat-a-tat drumming rushes you along this little thriller only to leave you stranded in a dark alley. More mature than their debut, and not quite the uptempo, chrome-polished pop of "Parallel Lines," "Eat to the Beat," or "Autoamerican," "Plastic Letters" highlights Burke's percussion and Destri's keyboards like no other Blondie project. "Plastic Letters" is Blondie's best. A top-ten must have from the 70s that leaves you yearning for more Destri, Destri's solo "Heart on a Wall" on CD.

    5 out of 5 stars PLASTIC LETTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-20

Plastic Letters is great! Fan Mail is i good pop song,Denis is a wonderful french/pop song, Kiddnapper is a Elvis type song but this is better becuase its by Blondie!!!(Blondie is and always will be better than Elvis!!)I Didn't Have the Nerve to Say No this is my favorite song on this album (though all the songs are great!!!)I love this alum!

5 out of 5 stars THE SECOND ALBUM.......2004-07-07

We go in a little bit further to 1977. The album itself has some great rockin' tracks to help it out. "Denis" is the highlight of the album, and is fantastic with the French! Then we go to "Touched By Your Presence Dear" which is still today great!!! This may not be the bands best album, but is one of the more punkish and rock n' roll types than the others. Other tracks like "Detroit 442", "Fan Mail", and "Contact In Red Square" are just as good!!!

5 out of 5 stars Miss Those Days, How about a Greatest Hits? .......2007-07-14

It is time for a best of Letters To Cleo, it's the least they could do if they are not gonna reissue Aurora Gory Alice or whatever it's called (the one with my fav song by them perhaps "Here And Now"...and probably their most recognizeable tune.

On "Wholesale" the first 4 songs I can listen to every day getting ready for work, just going out. Just a great hard rock band, that kinda gotted clumped into the alternative rock scene I guess back in the early 90's.
Kay Hanley has a great voice and is one of my favorite female singers, and with the hard rock edgy sound it does sound good, I've yet to pick up her solo efforts including "Cherry Marmalade" I think it's called, but I've been close a couple times.

Hey, perhaps a Best of Letters To Cleo AND Kay Hanley double disk? Yeah, let's get this thing going!

5 out of 5 stars probably 4.5, but it's so much fun, I rounded up.......2005-01-12

I've had this cd for eight or nine years now, and I still enjoy listening to it. It has a determined energy, but doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, a combination I enjoy. I'm not saying it's genius or anything. In fact, it's fairly straightforward, and perhaps stereotypically early 90s alternative. Perhaps it's just the allure of Kay Henley's spunky voice that keeps me listening.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff!.......2004-11-17

Hard chick rock with an alternative sheen. Letters To Cleo were not the first in the genre, nor the best, but they were good at what they did. Will please fans of Fetchin Bones, Sheer and The Breeders. "Demon Rock' `Fast Way' and `Awake' are standouts. In a different world they might have been huge, but like a lot of like minded artists, they never quite made the big time.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this album!.......2002-11-16

I just bought this album today, I had to order it from a store, and was eagerly awaiting for it to arrive. Every song on this album is terrific. Kay Hanley has the most adorable voice ever. Her songs are so great, she's a great song writer. My favorite tracks are....oh...well, I love all of them equally! Get it! It's a classic everyone should have!

4 out of 5 stars Shiny happy sun music.......2002-06-19

I became acquainted with Letters To Cleo back in the mid-90s when I heard their song "Here And Now" on the radio and the Melrose Place soundtrack. I bought Aurora Gory Alice and Wholesale Meats and Fish at the same time. It's a good thing I did. I became interested in Letters To Cleo because I liked "Here and Now," but all the songs that have the sound of "Here and Now" are found on Wholesale Meats and Fish. I found Aurora Gory Alice to be a quite boring album, and if I hadn't also bought Wholesale Meats and Fish, I would have assumed these guys were a one-hit wonder. I like the music of every song on Wholesale Meats and Fish; I only skip "Demon Rock" and "Acid Jed" because I don't like the lyrics. I bought this when I lived in Los Angeles, and with its sunny summer sound, when I hear it now it takes me back to the mountains and beaches of L.A. Other groups I listen to when I'm in this mood are Belly, Sugar, Elastica, and early Popinjays ('91-'92).

      Album Description

London-born Declan McManus, better known as Elvis Costello, has distinguished his remarkable career with a long and acclaimed string of artistically adventurous albums. this lyrically brilliant and melodically nimble singer-songwriter's penchant for exploring diverse genres and shifting musical personae is nowhere more front and center than on 1993's The Juliet Letters. Inspired by a collection of missives written by an Italian professor to Shakespeare's Juliet, this unique project fuses pop sensibilities and chamber music form, proving both avant garde and accesssible as Costello gave new meaning to the term "alternative music."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of my top five albums.......2007-06-21

As a classical musician and rabid Costello fan, this is one of my favorite CDs. It's to be listened to from beginning to end, moving from melancholy to nostalgic to sweet to acid humor. The man's a genius, and he used great musicians to support the songs.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-12-18

I would say this CD takes a bit of time to get into and it requires a bit of an open mind but it has become a regular listen for me. Elvis Costello's unique and enjoyable vocal and lyrical style is certainly present and that's reason enough to recommend this CD to any Evlis Costello fan.

I can imagine some people may not like this CD so much. The sound of this album is for a particular taste and the sound/style of a string quartet is unwavering which may feel bland after a while to some ears. But there is nothing in poor quality about this CD and the composition is solid and creative throughout. They have gotten a lot of mileage out of a single instrumentation of 4 string instruments and a voice.

I didn't give it 4 stars because that would suggest I had a particular issue with the CD, which I really hadn't. If 4 1/2 were available I would select that.

4 out of 5 stars Brave, but not for everyone........2006-06-08

I give this a forth star because I still pull it out for the occasional listen. But it remains one of the most difficult CD's in Elvis' careening musical experimentation. What usually happens is I find myself wondering where these songs would have fit had they been recorded for other Costello albums. "Jacksons Monk and Rowe" obviously would have made it as a "Get Happy" song. "For Other Eyes;" "Imperial Bedroom." A folksy arrangement might have sent "Damnation's Cellar" to "King Of America." And so on and so forth....

But the song sequence works wonderfully and the playing of the Brodskys never sinks to pedestrian. These folks obviously understood that they were going to have to throw preconceived ideas about playing with a "rocker," just as Elvis was trying to (as he put it) avoid the dreaded "crossover" sound. My major gripe with the album is that Elvis' voice isn't always up to the task ("North" fares much better in that department). And anyone looking for a "typical" Costello platter is in for a major shock. Of course, anyone trying to define a "typical" Costello disc is probably going to have a rough go of it.....

That doesn't stop "The Juliet Letters" from featuring some fine work, including "The Birds Will Still Be Singing," which deserves a shot with a voice like Josh Groban's or Michael Buble's. Or maybe now that Elvis has his new beau, she'll do a full set of her favorites from the Costello/MacManus discography. Now wouldn't THAT be a hoot? (Think of the lush strings that abounded on "North," over a decade after "The Juliett Letters.")

The bonus disc has some fun things, including cuts from Costello's obscure "Deep Dead Blue" and - my personal favorite - he and the Brodskys covering "God Only Knows."

4 out of 5 stars Unusual collaboration demonstrates that EC knows no boundaries.......2006-04-22

I was surprised to see that no one had written a review of one of Elvis Costello's finest albums in the 90's. "The Juliet Letters" certainly is an acquired taste; if you like contemporary classical music you'll enjoy this. The songs still have hooks even if they are played by violin vs. guitar or keyboard. The story behind this release is that there was an academic that answered letters written to Juliet (of the play Romeo and Juliet"). Never mind (as EC points out in his deluxe notes)that it was kind of creepy that someone would be writing letters to imaginery character much less one that had been "dead" for over 200 years.

This reissue features the original album on the first disc. The highlights there are "Swine","I Almost Had a Weakness" with a great melody, "This Offer is Unrepeatable" and "Jacksons, Monk and Rowe". The last track is the closest to a "single" the album would produce. EC wrote, co-wrote with the Brodsky Quartet (some members of the quartet also wrote material solo as well). The remastered sound has better detail than the previous edition but otherwise seems much the same. If Costello and the Brodsky Quartet overreach at times, it's the over reach of talent and ambition not pretension.

The bonus disc is the find here. Including tracks recorded for other projects with and without the Brodsky Quartet including Costello's favorite tracks from the "Deep Dead Blue" Ep released in 1993 recorded with Bill Frisell. We get a stunning version of "God Only Knows" recorded live with the Quartet as well as other material recorded live such as Michael Thomas' marvelous "Skeleton" and a powerful arrangement of the folk standard "She Moved Through the Fair" arranged by Quartet member Paul Cassidy. Two of Costello's collaborations with John Harle from the "Terror and Magnficience" CD are also included. We also get live recordings of "Put Away Forbidden Playthings" (a song that Costello was commissioned to write) as well as a trio of the Fire Suite pieces EC collaborated on.

This is a terrific reissue mixing a number of unusual collaborations on the second disc. While fans who loved "My Aim is True" probably won't be playing this a whole lot Costello fans that love his rich material and unusual collaborations over the years will. This makes an excellent companion piece to "My Flame Burns Blue" Costello's jazz-rock-orchestral album recorded live. That terrific and unusual album has a bonus disc with excerpts from Costello's fine contemporary orchestral piece "Il Sogno" conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas working with the London Symphony Orchestra as a bonus disc. Both of these releases are well worth picking up.

The Boston quintet had a fine run with a '94 debut that included the hit "Here & Now" and a slot on the Melrose Place soundtrack. A sophomore slump followed. But there's life aplenty in zippy, Veruca Salt-like "Anchor" plus "I Got Time" and "Sparklegirl." If it's any help, singer Kay Hanley can be plotted on a grid between Cyndi Lauper and Gwen Stefani. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat alt-rock that keeps you dancing!.......2006-05-05

I have been a fan of LTC since "Here & Now" came out (and became a single because it was on the Melrose Place soundtrack!)
This is my second favorite LTC album, and they keep up the energy through almost the whole disc!

"I Got Time" is a perfect opener! It gives the album a fast start and the quirky lyrics set the stage for the rest of the album ("I've got the strength to move, but....why should I?") Other highlights include the swingy songs "Because of You", "Veda Very Shining", and "Sparklegirl". There are a couple of flat songs, such as "Alouette & Me" and the first single "Anchor". I would have released "Co-Pilot" as the first single for this album; it might have caught on a little better. Plus, it's my favorite song on the album! "Go!" is another great song that deserves to be the title track. It has an energy that doesn't quit and features some great organ work.

Go! is a great album, and fans of "10 Things I Hate About You" LTC and Kay's work in the film "Josie and the Pussycats" (yes, that is Kay as the singing voice of Josie) should give this a listen. You may find that there was so much more to them than just poppy hooks.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cd!!.......2004-05-06

I don't know how many times people have told me that they saw LTC in 10 Things I Hate About You, went out and bought their cd, and it wasn't what they expected. That's because they aren't playing any of their songs. They sound awesome in the movie I know, but it isn't their music. I have been an LTC fan since 1996 and i love them. This cd is almost their best (second only to Aurora Gory Alice). Kay's vocals sound awesome and the guys' playing is great too. You should really check this out!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite female fronted rock bands!.......2004-02-05

This cd is amazing! A must-have, I never EVER skip a song. Songs like Co-Pilot, I got time, and anchor are upbeat and happy. Alouette & Me is the perfect slow ballad. Kay Hanley is a great singer and the band is good as well.

4 out of 5 stars Go Ahead And Give It A Buy.......2003-04-08

Letters to Cleo were a chick fronted alt band from the early nineties that combined elements of shogazing bands like My Bloody Valentine with the crunch of harder alt bands like sheer and the pop sensibility of Jesus Jones. Success proved as elusive For Letters To Cleo as it did for like-minded artists Certain Distant Suns and Eve's Plum. They were pretty good at what they did; the musical mainstream just didn't bite. They definitely sound of their times today, but the album will be a sure hit for fans of the genre or those who are nostalgic for the times.

      5 out of 5 stars God, I miss them...........2003-03-26

I started following Letters To Cleo in 1994 after they played the first WBCN River Rave here in Boston (which now includes bands such as Metallica). I had gone to see Better then Ezra, and LTC stole the show. I own all of the albums minus Ten Things. Kay's solo work is good, and there are similarities (with Michael helping with the writing and all) but sadly it's not the same. The last time I saw them was at the CD release party for this album where they shut down a block in downtown Boston and rocked out at lunchtime....oh, wait, I'd never skip school to see a great concert from a great band....lol:-). Anyways...buy this album and Aurora Gory Alice and you'll be pleased but if you really want to rock out, check out Wholesale!!!! It's a much edgier album. And Kay, if you should happen to read this.....please at least think of getting the band back together!!!!!
