Quentin Tarantino's trash-talking original soundtrack is fuelled by a greasy Tex-Mex theme. Starting with the Blasters classic "Dark Night," this album rumbles like a gang of renegade vampire bikers through a sharp new one from ZZ Top ("She's Just Killing Me"), a classy Jimmy Vaughan blooze ("Dengue Woman Blues"), an outrageous vignette by Cheech Marin, a couple of vintage Stevie Ray sides, and some rockin' Tejano tornados from Tito Larriva. --Jeff Bateman

3 out of 5 stars Question that no review has answered.......2007-01-29

This is not a review but a question: does this soundtrack contain the song the bar band is playing during Santanico Pandamonium's (Salma Hayek's) dance / seduction / prelude to vamping out? (That scene is so erotic, dreamy, and hypnotic.) Have been burned in the past by so-called soundtrack albums that leave off the most distinctive songs (haven't we all?), so just checking before I buy it. From reviewing the credits, I suspect this song is "After Dark" but I want to be sure. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Soundtrack Albums EVER.......2006-11-10

Front to back this soundtrack is dynamite. Watch the volume on Cheech's cut("Chet's Speech"). Might offend everybody within earshot. Tito and Tarantula are awesome and this is one of the few albums available that their music (just two cuts)is on. George Clooney's "Everybody Be Cool" must be played at maximum volume. "Texas Funeral" has become my all time favorite country ballad. I give this 10 out of 5!

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2002-04-11

This has got it all, Metal country and several songs I don't know how to classify. Wonderful

Parents be warned several speeches about various portions of the female anatomy.

4 out of 5 stars A great mix of western rock.......2001-01-01

I found the movie hilarious and entertaining, and the soundtrack is even better.I am a huge fan of the southwestern rock, and this CD is what I have been looking for. Chet's speech is one of the highlights of the album. There is one fault to the album, and that is the goofy song Texas funeral. It's just too damn weird. Besides that, the album is great.

3 out of 5 stars An okay CD.......2000-08-29

I got this CD because I loved Robert Rodriguez's soundtrack for 'Desperado'. I like just about every song on that CD. I got this one because I like the opening title song and the barroom songs. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised by the rest of the songs, but unfortunately I wasn't. The rest of the songs aren't bad, but they don't knock my socks off either. You also get Chet's speech, which is hilarious. The hidden track is the second part of his speech and should have been tagged on to the first part, which I find a bit annoying. Also, the barroom songs didn't seem as bright or peppy as they did in the DVD when I first heard them. This was disappointing. They sounded more studio produced then live. None-the-less, if you really liked certain songs from the movie and have to have them, I'd get this CD otherwise I might skip it.

The arrival of the Ballets Russes in London in the late spring of 1911, led by the dynamic Diaghliev, made a huge impact on an entire generation of British composers who were still in music school--or, as in Bax's case, had just got out. Russian Orientalism was still quite popular, and in 1919 Bax did two orchestrations of Lyadov's Children's Tales when asked to set music to J. M. Barrie's play The Truth About Russian Dancers. Its success was modest, owing to Bax's eccentric take on fractured dance rhythms. (Classically trained dancers couldn't dance to it.) Still, it has all the flavor and dynamism of Bax's mature tone poems. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars The balletic Bax is worth it!.......2000-03-27

At first Bax seems to be totally haunted by his preoccupations with the 'Yeatsian' celtic world of legends and later with the northern darkness of Jean Sibelius. In some senses this facile analysis is true but Bax was a much more complicated artist than that. The first important fact about this CD is that it is early Bax, thus confirming that he wrote these pieces before his creative drive started to fail him as opposed to his reactive works which he slaved over later and lacked something of the conviction of his earlier works. These two works come from 1917-8 and 1920 respectively. Therefore they came from a mature period in his life when he had some of his best rone poems behind him, 'the Garden of Fand', 'Tintagel', etc. and are not mere juvenilia despite the present complete neglect of them. The reason they are not performed immediately becomes obvious when you read the sleeve notes which describe the ballets to which they refer. The programmes are to the modern mind frankly embarrassing although they probably would have been amusing to an audience of the time. However that is eighty years and world wars away in spirit for these works might have been composed after WWI but they really belong to the period before it in terms of artistic creation. I would suggest to anyone purchasing this CD (and I strongly recomend that they do so!) not to read the notes until after playing the music through at least a couple of times because I feel they actually detract from the appreciation of this marvellous music. It is pure Bax, shorn of his celtic, nordic concerns and rich in melodic and orchestral features which delight the ear and please any admirer of his art. The closest comparison I have is with Maurice Ravel in his ballet scores like 'Ma Mere L'Oye' or 'Daphnis and Chloe' although Bax's music is quintessentially his own and the similarity is maybe just one of superficial episodic atmosphere. Bax gives us one of his best tunes 'the Dance of Motherhood' here to which he gives his dreamy swell and passionate touch, lifted by the dry reedy woodwind away from being too rich and cloying. The harmonies of mystery are still there and that is why I feel the 'kitschy' ballet around it detracts from the music which has its own strength and needs its independence in order to gain acceptance to modern taste. The playing and recording are wonderful, Thomson and the LPO are taking it as seriously as Beethoven's 9th which saves the works from being discarded remnants of outmoded taste. We get 67 minutes of great music which will never fail to interest and lift spirits that might be sad on a rainy November evening. Lovely, lovely stuff!

          Product Description

SHADES OF DAWN (Vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass & drums) is a German Progressive rock band, from Düsseldorf. Its musicians develop some sophisticated music with elegant melodies, enlightened by muffled chords of keyboards. The precious vocals evoke those of PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, whereas the fineness of the arrangements, the airborne and Steve HACKETT-like soarings on guitar, the refined lyricism of the songs, melodies often remind of post-GABRIEL GENESIS. The band also likes to immerge into complex instrumental passages, with a CAMEL-like subtlety. SHADES OF DAWN released the album "The Dawn Of Time" in 1998. Now in the Musea label, the groupe today presents "From Dusk Till Dawn" (2007). This album is basically composed of tracks dating back to 1994, reworked and enriched with additional parts, some songs of that time being rerecorded on this occasion. The result is much more than a collector's item, this is an excellent symphonic rock album. SHADES OF DAWN then was influenced by ELOY, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL or GENESIS (Amongst others...), including MARILLION in some keyboards solos. Here is some very melodic music, often carried by a really lyrical guitar, finely played, including many dynamic and lively instrumental sequences, and very ethereal atmospheres. Before the next album, "Graffity's Rainbow", you should appreciate this nice piece of pure symphonic Progressive rock !
