Amazon.com

"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

Album Description

The 13 new songs on Memory Almost Full are performed entirely by Paul McCartney (excluding strings) and produced by Grammy Award-winner David Kahne (The Strokes, Sublime, Bruce Springsteen and more).

This beautifully-packaged, deluxe limited edition also comes with a 2nd disc that contains 3 unreleased bonus tracks and audio commentary by Paul McCartney describing the music, 6 foldout color postcard-sized photos, and full lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Good music, poorly engineered recording.......2007-07-18

I must admit that I'm somewhat surprised by the number of negative reviews I've seen for this album. I thought Paul came up with some good melodies here. The musicianship is first-rate. Paul's voice is in pretty good shape. Sure, there are times when the lyrics could've been better, but that's typical McCartney. Folks, if you didn't like this album at first, try listening to it a bit more. I think it's a heck of a lot better than most of the pop/rock being produced today. And let's not even talk about rap and hip-hop (yuck). This CD set contains songs that are fun to sing, complete with melodic twists and variations in tempo. You wouldn't think those would be such rare qualities in today's music, but they are.

I agree with the reviewer who was critical of the recording. One of the worst examples is "Only Mama Knows". Most of the song is pushed to the absolute limit of CD volume. There's no actual clipping indicated when the track is viewed on a good audio editing program, but it sounds like there was clipping at some stage of the recording/mixing process. The effect of this is distortion and almost no dynamic range. I suspect a remastered version of this album will be issued years from now, and the volume problem will be fixed. And, yes, I'll probably be foolish enough to buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Time to retire and rest on your laurels.......2007-07-18

To say that I am disappointed in this compilation of McCartney music is an uderstatement. What was Sir Paul smoking when he conceived this idea? He has written these stupid essays and sung them into songs. And the essays are terrible and mindless.

Sir Paul, you are 64 and I will still send you a valentine, if you stop writing trashy music. And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. This one is sad.

It is time to retire and rest on your laurels.

5 out of 5 stars Paul is still on top !.......2007-07-16

Paul is still on top of his game !
Excellent music !!!
Recommend to all.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful! Sad!.......2007-07-16

The first two tracks are the only ones I can stand to listen to. The rest, I tried once but kept fast-forwarding about 30 seconds into each song. I was listening to this in the kitchen and my husband came in and said, "GOD! Is THIS the new McCartney CD? Pretty sad!" I couldn't have said it better.

1 out of 5 stars Memory may already be full..........2007-07-14

I've been humming the melody to "Dance Tonight" since I first heard it. Then it came to me...I've heard it before!
Take a listen to John Lennon's "Dear Yoko" and see what you think.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars All stars to all-star band.......2007-07-18

This is one of the things you always dream of happening. - And they did it twice.

Please do it again!

4 out of 5 stars Roy, George, & Bob, YEAH, but WHY Petty & Lynne???.......2007-07-15

Yes, I was very, very happy with this CD when it came out in 1988 (for...several reasons, one being mainly acoustic rhythm guitar predominated), and to this day, "Tweeter & The Monkey Man" is played with regularity on my stereo. "Handle With Care" beats most anything that George did (by himself, anyway), and Roy Orbison's "Not Alone Anymore" ranks right up there with "Sweet Dream Baby" or "Pretty Woman." But...I mean, that's IT - I detest "ELO," and Tom Petty makes me wish he'd taken up needlepoint or something (doesn't he EVER wash the sleep residue out of his mouth? He sings here with the very same mono-tone he has inflicted on us ever since "Breakdown"). So, no, I can't justify a "Wilbury III," or (Heaven help us!) a "Wilbury video." It's just too damned disrespectful of Roy and now George. But hey, "that & a dime," etc, & if you've already decided you're gonna purchase this, most Amazon "reviews" won't change your mind. Coupla hints, tho: Ringo "Newest AllStarrs" (the 2001 tour) DVD with Roger Hodgson, Ian Hunter, & Greg Lake is a MONSTER; Or check closely to see if there's anything by Paul, circa the "Venus & Mars" era.

5 out of 5 stars Quintesential Must Have.......2007-07-13

One of the greatest compilations of influential musicians ever. No egos involved in the making of this music nor was there an infighting amongst the artist. Dylan, Petty, Orbison, Lynn and of course George Harrison all bring their life experiences and musical talent to two unbelievable albums that will leave you asking why that more musicians can't create artistic masterpieces like this. The first album has some of the best compositions from all the journeymen while the second seems to be a tribute to Roy Orbison while maintaining teh artistry of the first. Haunting lyrics, amazing melodies and unbelievable harmonies appear at some of the most unexpected places in all the songs. Nobody's Child which was recorded as an awareness song for the people of the world for all the orphans is one of the hidden gems on these albums as well as the remake of Runaway which seems to be a tribute to Roy Orbisons origins in Rock and Roll history. If you are a music lover or collector you need this set in your collection and if you are just getting started in collecting music then this set is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the Traveling Wilburys!.......2007-07-12

I have been searching used music stores everywhere for the Traveling Wilburys, and with no success. So when I saw the deluxe edition being released I was ecstatic. What a group! This is my favorite music buy all year.

5 out of 5 stars Travelling on.......2007-07-12

Long overdue re-release of some classic material. How sad that Roy did not survive to see the reception the Wilburys' work got. Not one single track on either CD disappoints. I had forgotten the odd track from the second album but it soon came back and sounds better today that it did back then. The DVD and accompanying booklet/photographs completed a truly memorbale collection. If there were more than five stars this colection would be worth it.

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song gets caught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.

Note that this two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars "You Will LOVE This CD!!!".......2007-06-27

I just got my CD and I love it... My favorite songs is Listen, I am Changing and Of course the NO.#1 HIT--"I'm telling you I'm not going"
Just Purchase it and you will not be disappointed.!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Your Goin' To Love this!.......2007-06-20

I was very sceptic about this adaptation. I was very dissapointed in Evita when they chose populairty over talent. I am a fan of Madonna and Beyonce but the performance by Beyonce is amazing.
In answer to T.T.'s remarks. RENT THE MOVIE! Gosh, a movie cost 4 bucks at the rental store. And there is very little talking. Most f the songs are like they are in the movie. But anyways...
THe performance is atstounding. I think that this album goes right up there with The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz and Chicago (never seenthis one, too young).
The songs are movig and the add ons are amazing. Listen is my Favorite, but more of that latter.
The Performances:
Beyonce- Beyonce was born to be Deena. Infact she mirrors Denna a whole lot (see Wikipedia - Destiny's Child). She delivers a superb performance, better that the original Bway Deena. Dreamgirls is phenominal.

Jennifer Hudson - Well what can I say but SIMON COWELL YOU WERE WRONG! And as she sings in I am Changin' AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP[HER]

Anikki Nonni Rose - Sorry if I spell her name wrong, but it is very odd. Honey if there was n unsung heroe of this film it would be her. Her phenominal and most of the time hilarious performance is what adds character to the film. Esp. when they brake Jimmy up with them she delivers a hilarious speech.

Eddie Murphie - Wonderful, Who knew he could sing.

Jamie Fox - GREAT!

Best Songs:
Move - Amazing! Wonderful beat. And SHAKE IT ON!
Cadilac Car - Wonderful song, esp. If you have a crappy car or a real Cadilac car
Steppin' To the bad Side - WONDERFUL, BEST SONG OF THE WHO MOVIE
I Love you I Do-lovely
Dreamgirls-Just hair raising
IT's All Over - Cuss a lot, I know, but amazing adittude though. Don't let little ones listen to this one.
And I am Telling You I'm Not Going - Just bye the CD for this song. I can't put in words the emotions in this song.
I Am Changing- Beautiful
Effie Sing my Song-Not in the movie but amazing
One Night Only- great
Disco version- great, but would have loved the wooshing like in the movie. A little too long, but when you see the extended version you will get the longer version and think WHY DID THEY CUT IT????!?!?!?
Listen - AMAZING SPECTACULAR! SUPER! IENIBOIWEBWEJKFDIVLEFB!
Dreamgirls Finale - " " (same as above)
Family (End Credits)- Better than the ordinary version for reasons I can't explain.

1 Dissapointment:
When I first saw you was a gereat song in the film, but in the original cast it was after Dreamgirls (To Sig. that Deena and Curtis were Together)
and it was reprised with an argument about Deena's Dreams. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS! but they cut out Deena and the purpose of the song was lost, but it is still wonderful.

My Only Thin is Get the Orginal Bway Cast and this CD. The Orig. Bway cast has a cool One Night Only Too. Try Them both. They have diff. textures, but are both truly amazing.

2 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-06-03

Apart from Beyonce singing Dreamgirls, this album doesn't bring much. It's a dud. Most of the songs are just a lot of talking not actual singing. The movie was good, and I think it's better to watch that and listen to the songs. Unlike the soundtrack "Casino", which I can listen to and enjoy without seeing the movie, I can't with this. they should have done what most movies do and pick a bunch of great oldies by other artists back in the day to create the movie/soundtrack. and i'm also very sick of Jennifer Hudson. sure she can hit high notes, but she only sounds like she's screaming. her voice is not appealing. i rather listen to Beyonce's voice any day; it's easier on my ears. i also don't like how she's so arrogant and ungrateful to Idol. i don't think she's going far with that kind of stink attitude. it just shows you're a sore loser.

3 out of 5 stars Quite forgettable.......2007-05-15

I've had this CD for several months now and I hardly ever listen to the music. I'm surprised how uninteresting it is to me. Yes, there are some good musical moments on this CD and Jennifer Hudson can sing, but she also screams too much, in my opinion, and I think she was extremely overrated in this performance. I just don't love listening to her sing on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls.......2007-05-12

The music is more intense watching the movie. I didn't enjoy the CD as much without the movie.

5 out of 5 stars a deluxe edition done right.......2007-07-13

Disc One is the reissued definitive recording of the 1980's.
Disc Two is chocked full of noisey Daydream Nation goodness performed live.

So often reissues are a ripoff. This set delivers the goods and then some.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 1988...and 2007!.......2007-06-22

The fifth album (more or less) by The Best Rock Band of the Last 25 Years should need no introduction, and indeed if you're interested in buying the deluxe edition of Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation," I can presume you're probably already a fan. You already know how the album summed up and then changed the course of the underground rock movement of the 80s, how the ample attention of critics, then music fans, then record labels set the stage for the alternative rock revolution of the 90s--oh well whatever Nevermind and yada yada yada. If, however, you haven't already drank the Kool-Aid (and you should!), some brief notes about the "basic" edition...

"Daydream Nation" is still hailed as Sonic Youth's grand masterpiece, and yeah, it still holds up as such (confession: it's my second favorite SY album after Sister), even if it doesn't seem as radical today as it did when it came out. Sure, there are swirling whirlwinds of oddly-(de)tuned guitars and feedback fading in, out and sometimes interrupting the songs, but make no mistake, there are definitely songs to be found here. The openening "Teenage Riot" is, for its galloping drums and lyrical cheekiness (imagining Dinosaur Jr's J. Mascis as president, or so Thurston Moore has said) basically a melodic and even hummable pop song. Even a more "experimental" song like "The Sprawl" has a certain immediacy, with bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon saying straigt out "does f**k you sound simple enough?" Heck, the closing "trilogy" of the album has all the power and intensity familiar to any classic rock fans, only with a live-wire buzzing and skree that comes from playing in one of Glenn Branca's guitar-army ensembles. Really, it's not so radical after all (for a taste of something far weirder, check out Twin Infinitives, which was released around the same time as DN by Royal Trux, a New York band friendly with Sonic Youth).

For us fan(atic)s, the real treat here is the second disc of this set, which features live versions of all the album's tracks, culled from the band's original tour supporting the album, albeit in a different order (SY has recently announced it will play "Daydream Nation" as part of a special show, presumably in the album's running order). These tracks, mostly of excellent sound quality, are shorter but sharper than the album versions. "Total Trash" is done as an instrumental (I could be wrong, but they seem to be quoting the early Pink Floyd's instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive" in one spot), preceded by another instrumental, "Totally Trashed," which toys around with electronics a bit. Mostly these are no-holds-barred performances that clearly draw on the band's love of hardcore punk and NYC No Wave (DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks). I don't know how a non-fan would react, but for yours truly it's pure Sonic bliss.

Another great bonus on disc two is the inclusion of four cover songs, three of which were taken from now hard-to-find tribute albums (this was before that concept got beaten to death): "Within You Without You" (The Beatles), "Computer Age" (Neil Young) and "Electricity" (Captain Beefheart). There's also a version of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick," with demented vocals from Kim, taken from a split 7" (as in vinyl, kids) that had the other band doing SY's "Halloween" on the reverse (alas, that version isn't included here). The Beatles cover in particular shows how the band could translate their sound into completely different realms--the original, of course, was played mostly with sitars.

Add all that to a package that includes ultra-Kool, and rare, pictures and an extensive essay by longtime SY friend Byron Coley, and you have a true Sonic feast. Like they did with the Goo Deluxe Edition and the Dirty (Deluxe Edition), Sonic Youth rewards fans and newcomers alike almost to the bursting point. Now let's hope they burn down the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame before too long...

5 out of 5 stars Deluxe Treatment of Sonic Youth's Breakthrough Album.......2007-06-12

Daydream Nation is clearly Sonic Youth's breakthrough album. A two lp set that focused all their previous ideas into one cohesive and brilliant album. The songs are stretched out more (though still song length)giving more of an idea of what they sounded like live. Music at this time was stuck in pop doldrums. Sonic Youth, which had built up a cult following, after the release of this album were then signed by a major label and brought all the indie rock bands into the light eventually including one that was just getting a start in Seattle that would soon eclipse all of them in popularity. However, back to Daydream Nation. The sprawling, though in no way self indulgent quality of the album took Sonic Youth into a new direction. Now, in getting the deluxe reissue treatment,it sheds new light on the album. On the 2nd disc you not only get live versions of all of the songs on the album (and Sonic Youth live takes what they do in the studio to a new level) but rarities as their version of "Within You, Without You" which was previously only available on a rare tribute album. If Daydream Nation were released for the first time this year, it would be one of the best albums of the year and with this deluxe reissue, in many ways it is.

3 out of 5 stars Pop up.......2007-07-08

This, Avril's third album, is a bit more upbeat and a bit less angsty than her last attempt. As with both her previous albums, The Best Damn Thing is an album that I find best to cherry pick for the songs I like. With my five favorites from this album, there is enough material over her three albums to put together a pretty decent showing. But there are still 2-3 songs on this album that I won't ever listen to again.

2 out of 5 stars A talented artist wasted........2007-07-06

The Best Damn Thing by Avril Lavigne is a sad and pathetic album. I liked Avril's Let Go and Under My Skin discs but her third album is as silly as the title itself. I think Avril has a wonderful, strong voice and an average songwriter but I don't know what has happened to her. I guess marriage softened her but this new bubble gum image and that blonde hair has got to go. She has so much talented and she's just throwing it away. It's so disappointing with lyrics like, "hey, hey, hey you I don't like your girlfriend, I think you need a new one..." Hopefully my little Candianan will knock it out of the park on her next album. Don't waste your time and money on this trash!

5 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2007-07-03

This is a different approach for Avril compared to her first two albums. It sounds like she has been listening to some Toni Basil, because there is a good bit of cheerleader like musicical influences in the sound she is putting out now. Combine that with the more raw punk attitude of the skate parks and a large amount of teen angst, and you get this album.

Originally I purchaed the censored version of this album, but realized I could not stand the censoring that was going on. The blanks in the singing just threw me off. Within two weeks of listening to the censored version, I ordered the uncensored one, and haven't gone back since.

4 out of 5 stars All out fun power pop........2007-07-01

"Girlfriend" was logically the first single from this CD. It's the best. Yes, it's a throwback to that "Hey Mickey" stuff (although it rocks more) but I liked "Hey Mickey". Does every freakin song have to be serious? Can't we just have fun listening to music once in a while?

There are 4 or 5 tracks that could easily be singles on the CD and they probably will become just that. Her label will likely milk this for a few years.

Compared to her last two it's somewhat a mix of the styles. The more pop-oriented of her first and the harder-edged sounds of her second CD (which I didn't care much for).

It's kind of a nice mix. You don't get too much of either. :)

On the other hand, I much preferred her first CD so to me this is much like a return to that sound.

A few of the tracks are more "punk" than I like, but those same tracks will likely appeal to many of her fans.

If you like Avril, then you must buy this CD (however, you probably already have).

4 out of 5 stars Get her new CD from Amazon, not TARGET.......2007-06-29

I had to buy this CD twice. I went to Target and got the CD, along with another one. As I'm listening to the songs, some of the words were "bleeped" out. I'm extremely disappointed since I've never had a problem with Target in the past. However, they seem to be following Wal-Marts lead. So, I will always make sure I get my music from here or Best Buy, at least I am getting my money's worth.
At least I was able to give the other CD to my step-daughter, now she can listen to it without all the bad words in.

However, Avril did a great job, I love all her CD's, can't wait for the next one.

    5 out of 5 stars My 1st Monkee LP!.......2007-07-19

I don't have this Rhino Complilation. Rather, I'm reviewing my ALBUM (complete with pops & clicks which I LOVE!) I played this on my totable Brown Westinghouse turntable. Mike starts with You Told Me. Then Mickey sings Spend My Life With You. Davy: Forget That Girl. a quickie called Band 6!Mike's turn: You Just May Be The 1. A worn out tune with Shades of Grey. Davy again with a vaudeville type a diddy called Can't Gets Her Off Of My Mind. Side 2 jams with Mickey's For Pete's Sake. Mick again with the spooky Mr. Webster. Mike YEEHAS with Sunny Girlfriend. A silly piece called Zilch! Then Mick really rocks with No Time! Davy sings about Early Morning Blues & Greens(I made up my own words when I was stuck on a lousy vaca). Then Mickey concludes with Randy Scouse Git. My youngest cousin & I saw when the Monkess Reunited(sans Nesmith) in '86. She was yelling for Davy & I'm partial to Dolenz. Lots of recent & classic memories! Actually: this is the 1st full fledged Monkee project where they ALL played their own insruments (altho Peter/Mike always played Guitar.) BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars I wanted to write a nasty review, but it's really superb .......2007-07-16

This deluxe edition of Headquarters is so nicely done (much like the first two in this series), I honestly couldn't write anything nasty. It's been presented with love and care.

The sound quality is great in both mono & stereo. It's very similar in sound quality to the Beatles Capitol Records releases that just came out recently. The bonus material is entertaining, as well as strong, I also loved some of the stuff I'd never heard before. The booklet is also really good, with lots of rare photos and the in depth story of the making of this album.

The overall packaging is very classy. It makes me hope that The Beatles get this kind of treatment through Apple records, or my favorite band, Deep Purple get this sort of stunning re-packaging from Rhino.

I grew up on the mono versions of the Monkees albums, all the way up to their fifth album "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" in April 1968, so I was really thrilled to see that mono finally made it to CD. I've always thought that the mono mixes were better overall, giving an overall impression of a heavier rock band sound. Though, I got the feeling that the Headquarters mono mix was a fold down of the stereo mix. As for the stereo mastering, it sounded brighter than the original Rhino CD's, with some added compression, and the signal might have been pushed harder than the older Rhino discs. But on the whole, a wonderful job. Let's hope the next two albums (released in mono & stereo) get this same kind of royal treatment.

Sure they seem to be milking the Monkee-cow, but when it's this strong, milk it baby. Next up, The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees?

Again: I'm reviewing the LP! Not the recent Rhino release. Mike's 1st with Salesman. Davy & She Hangs Out. Mike again with the Door Into Summer.Mike(w/Mickey & his Moog Sythesizer with Love Is Only Sleeping. Next: Davy's Vaudeville bit called Cuddly Toy. The 45 Words ends side 1.
S.2 is a dull Davy tune called Hard to Believe.Mike's country twanging is featured in Hangin' Round. Peter does a brief goofy spoken Pig thing. Then an extended version of Mickey's Pleasant Valley Sunday. Mick again (with the Moog, Man!) in Daily Nightly. Then Mick "MC's" Mike in Don't Call On Me. Ending with Star Collector! "Bye Bye! Bye Bye"....

5 out of 5 stars pleasant valley tuesday.......2007-07-11

my copies of the deluxe versions of HEADQUARTERS and PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD. turned up today and they were worth the wait. both albums are special in their own way. HEADQUARTERS, the monkees' third album, featured the band playing their own instruments (augmented by their producer, chip douglas, on bass) and has a strong country rock/garage band sound, thanks mostly to the influence of mike nesmith. it's a fun, charmingly "homemade" album, but the guys decided to make PISCES a compromise, using ace session players (while still contributing plenty of guitar/keyboards/percussion of their own).

the music on this album is an eclectic mix of country/rock/pop/lounge/psychedelia sounds that blend surprisingly well. producer douglas, under-appreciated at the time by the band, helped maintain a unified overall vibe, despite the stylistic shifts from track to track. my personal favorite songs are PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY, WHAT AM I DOING HANGING 'ROUND?, DAILY NIGHTLY, THE DOOR INTO SUMMER, LOVE IS ONLY SLEEPING and, of course, CUDDLY TOY...but the whole album is ear candy from start to finish (even the much-maligned davy jones number, HARD TO BELIEVE).

the deluxe edition of this album features a bunch of bonus tracks, including many previously unreleased mixes. i found myself prefering some of these to the originals (i had similar feelings listening to the also-included mono mix of the entire album).

andrew sandoval's liner notes are well written and helpfully informative (well, not a whole lot of new info for my jaded ears, but still nicely presented). all-in-all, i thought the whole package was a great tribute to the original classic. i can only hope and pray that the folks in charge of the beatles' upcoming re-mixes can be half as responsible and fan-friendly as andrew.

long live the texas praire chicken!

At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. (Keillor fans will know exactly what to expect, as the film is scrupulously faithful to his universe, and Keillor and his Shoe Band wrote a good deal of the songs.) As anybody who's seen Postcards from the Edge knows, Streep can really sing, and she sounds great in the rootsy, old-style country vein that makes up most of this soundtrack. Her rollicking duets with her screen sister Lily Tomlin, "My Minnesota Home" and "Goodbye to My Mama," are priceless. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are beyond crusty on "Whoop-I-Ti-Yi-Yo," which sounds like both an outtake from and a parody of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, while "Bad Jokes" is, well, just that. As for Lohan, who plays Streep's daughter, her version of "Frankie & Johnny" is a little shaky but heartfelt and kinda adorable. Purists, you can start hollering now. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Nice to listen to. The DVD has a few, but not all, of the most entertaining songs from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A PRAIRE HOME COMPANION REVIEW.......2007-03-12

I bought the soundtrack since I enjoyed the music when I watched the movie. You can listen to the excellent deliveries of country music songs from Garrison Keillor,Woody Harrelson,Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. In my opinion the best reason to buy the CD is to hear Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin singing the "My Minnesota Home".They are just fantastic!Pleasant suprise is the well prepared DVD that complements the CD and contains some songs that you don't find in the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Meryl Streep.......2007-03-09

This is a wonderful collection of songs, sung with warmth and heart - a true treasury of music.
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.
    Great album!

If your previous album was a slow-burning success story, it can be hard to be expected to hit the ground running on the follow-up. Fortunately, the Kaiser Chiefs have done just that on the fantastically titled Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Like Employment, their debut and this album's predecessor, Yours Truly... is full of radio-friendly, hook-ridden tunes that mask cunningly subversive lyrics. The Kaiser Chiefs are very much a Britpop band, which is probably why "Highroyds" opening couplet--"I remember nights out when we were young/They weren't very good, they were rubbish"--sounds like something Jarvis Cocker would sing while being backed by the boys from Blur. And it's this lyrical sentiment that's carried throughout the album, much of which is satire wrapped up in potential singles. Best of all, and a perfect example of this, is "The Angry Mob," sure to be shouted along to by exactly the people it's targeting. It's the rare band that can mock and judge its audience and still be loved by them, but that's exactly what the Kaiser Chiefs have done on Yours Truly, Angry Mob. --Ted Kord

    Album Description

Yours Truly, Angry Mob is the Kaiser Chiefs's brilliant follow-up to their debut, Employment.

Kaiser Chiefs were one the great musical success stories of 2005. Fast forward to 2007 and Kaiser Chiefs (Ricky Wilson - lead vocals), Andrew "Whitey" White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick "Peanut" Baines (keyboards) and Nick Hodgson (drums and vocals) are about to unveil their much anticipated second album.

Yours Truly, Angry Mob wields its musical might from the start in the shape of "Ruby" - an infectious single to rival anything the band have done before. "Angry Mob", a favorite from the band's European festival appearances last year is destined to be a universal fan favorite. "Heat Dies Down" will surely have 'em pogoing in the aisles en masse, while the stunning "Everything Is Average Nowadays" is perhaps the thread linking Yours Truly... with its predecessor. Yours Truly, Angry Mob, as one band member has been heard to utter, "is an album full of big choruses and even bigger guitars". Maybe so. It's also the work of a band hitting their creative stride. All hail the Chiefs!

Deluxe Version Includes: Hard Back Digipak with 24 page booklet DVD containing 6 live tracks recorded in Berlin last year. 10 minute documentary on the recording of Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Audio CD (same track listing as regular version)

    5 out of 5 stars fatevi legare.......2007-07-20

4 out of 5 stars very pleasantly surprised.......2007-07-11

I took a risk and bought this album because of the song "Ruby". The entire album turned out to be very good, and I'm quite happy with it. Good catchy songs throughout. Do many people today buy entire albums, instead of just downloading one or two songs from a band? Probably not, and it's a shame. I recommend the album.

    2 out of 5 stars radio friendly.......2007-07-08

It is exactly the words radio friendly in amazon's little review that make me flinch. KS have turned into a pop band and they play songs that are nice, but just a little heavier than your average boyband. Too much Kinks, too much other (better) Britpop bands and even Spinal Tap.

Over the top, just not very good.

5 out of 5 stars loutish pop (but in a very good way).......2007-05-14

My first listen was on an iPod, my second-tenth on an excellent car stereo. Do yourself a favor and pump this album out loud. The production screams for speakers.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth a buy.......2007-05-12

Solid CD from this UK band, but Ruby Ruby, the first single, is still my favorite.
