The Stranger
"If you were a fan of ‘90s Oregon power-pop outfit Marigold, keep your ears peeled for Cabinessence from Eugene..."

Product Description
It’s not every day you hear something as fresh and familiar as Cabinessence. Call it what you will — psychedelic country, Pet Sounds meets Sweetheart of the Rodeo, plantation art-rock, "Glam Parsons" — it’s not country, but it’s not exactly not country, either. Rising from the ashes of Springfield’s stillborn power-pop outfit Marigold (Outpost Records), Jacob Arnold and Nathan Maricle have grown up, embraced their inner Merle Haggard and put together an alt-country band that would make Marc Bolan proud. Drawing liberally from the varied textures of pop, folk, rock and country music, the sound is as familiar as it is invigorating – and with nods to every nook and cranny in the American pop music pantheon, it’s every music geek’s wet dream.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")

Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-03-03

When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

Thank you, EMI.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

5 out of 5 stars An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26

Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Discovered singing in a noted New York City watering hole, the Syracuse native's successful major label debut quickly made him a rising star who garnered comparisons to Mario Lanza--from Tony Bennet, no less. But Amante's showy, soaring style and good looks seemed destined for a wider audience than opera's, and indeed this sophomore release largely delivers on the tenor's rich crossover potential. While many classically educated singers seem challenged to throw off the formal constraints of their rigorous training in tackling pop material, Amante's journeyman musical background has gifted him with a more pliant delivery. It's hard to imagine Bocelli tackling such oldies Top 40 fodder as Gary Puckett's "Young Girl," let alone imbuing it with the melodrama that Amante effortlessly imparts it here. His "Delilah" strives for the kitschy verve of Tom Jones' original, with a voice whose natural power begs comparison with the Welsh sex symbol on the opening "Till" as well. Amante mixes enough Neopolitan standards and originals into the mix to maintain its crossover appeal, but curiously it's pop standards like his soaring, emotional take on Orbison's "Crying" (in a performance that reminds us that the rock legend was arguably a crossover pioneer as well) and a cover of "Back On My Feet" that seem to best engage his considerable talents. It's an album more oriented towards Vegas than Verdi, which seems precisely the intent. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-01-16

I have seen Michael Amante in concert and this CD is not the best of his voice. He has a very powerful voice and it did not come out in this CD. The music he picked to record was good, mostly Tom Jones type music, but his voice is not at it's best. I think it needed better back-up or accoustics to bring out the power of his voice.

4 out of 5 stars Better the Second Time Around.......2004-10-05

Michael Amante is back. Much to the chagrin of his many detractors and surely to equal delight of his many fans.

I purchased this CD not sure what to expect since Mr. Amante's first CD was a rather uneven attempt at Opera.
Luckily the old adage " It get's better with time" applies to his sophmore CD.

I find the song selection and style much more appropriate to his voice and with the exception of songs like "Young Girl" and "Delilah" this is a very nice CD.

Mr. Amante's voice seems more setteled and just a tad darker than on his first CD and he displays masterful command over the stylistic nuances of the English selections.
I particularily enjoyed the Jazz influenced styling of the Mario Lanz stanadrs "Be My Love" and " Because You're Mine" as well as the old Neapolitan fav "Dicitencello Vuie".
Also his reading of the classic "Caruso" is surpassed only by Maestro Pavarotti and even that is disputable.

Of course Mr. Amante still seems to have some trouble with the Italian language at times but nothing of the massive difficulty he displayed last time around.

Considering that his musical genre, "Popera", is dominated by Italians (Bocelli & Safina)& Brits (Russell Watson & Sarah Brightman)I think Mr. Amante deserves the credit due him as being a worthy American representative. Of course there is also the over-rated Josh Groban but that's neither here nor there.

4 stars for this CD over the 3 stars for his last effort. Couldn't give it 5 stars because in all fairness, Mr. Amante really ought to get a better understanding of the foreign languages he interprets. Other than that this is a fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amaz(on)ing.......2004-08-11

To the Music Fan in Calgary. You are living proof that the cold weather in Canada is not good for one's hearing. Dear Michael's voice is stronger than ever. All you have to do is hear him live singing in Rao's Restaurant on a Monday night without a microphone or amplification and you will realize the error in your ways.
Trashing a talent like Michael Amante is further proof of your inability to distinguish between a good voice and a great voice. Obviously with all of the positive reviews that you see herew and read throughout the world, all of our ears cannot be lieing to us all at once.
Perhaps you were in a bad mood or your stereo just couldn't handle his high notes and was distorting?
Give his first album another listen (as long as your ears are thawed out) and I believe you will reconsider. You may end up throwing your trash where it belongs. In the garbage can !

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2004-02-03

Some of you may have read my review of his "operatic album" which I whole heartedly condemned as trash (which it is, since the music is so poorly sung and so badly interpreted), however, this is a reflection of the man and his voice doing what it should be doing. This man is NOT an opera singer and his fans should not for a moment think they are getting any understanding of opera when they listen to him, for they are not. However, singing the music best suited to his voice, he is wonderful. This album is truly enjoyable. Here his voice can shine forth in all its splendor, and we are all enriched by what he has to offer. Why so many good singers who are simply wonderful in their own area of expertese wish to sing opera when it really doesn't suit them (even if they have the notes) is something I can't understand. Michael Amante is so wonderful here, and I found listening to him simply thrilling. ONE WORD OF ADVICE DEAR MICHAEL: Stick to what you do best and let others do what they do best. This album is really a treat, and the mellow caressing sound Amante makes is truly exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Michael 's #1 Fan.......2003-11-14

This album is just wonderful and I truly enjoy this album as I did his first alubmn...It's a great mix of classical and POP. I listen to all the songs on this album but especially enjoy "It's Come To This" which Michael wrote. I have 3 cd's(home, car, office) and listen to him all the time. Michael sings from the heart and feels every word he sings. He is going places. Waiting for the next CD ......

5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

On Vehicle, singer-songwriter Sam Bisbee writes wry pop songs with a cerebral twist, similar to Ron Sexsmith, Rufus Wainwright, and Matthew Sweet. His laconic delivery, coupled with the loping, gently rocking backdrop, invites you into his ironic world, where the mundane and the lovesick intertwine in suburban hell. Songs about lawnmowers ("Ride 'em mower with my Walkman on, listening to my favorite song"), cubicles ("I want to touch you in your cubicle, I want to touch you in your space"), and bucket seats ("When you're in my bucket seat, you can put on your favorite MP3") are sung with clever detachment, suggesting equal measures of affection and disgust. This is the world Bisbee knows, and his funny observations and warm melodies give it a patina of interest--though he seems revolted by its vacuity, he also accepts it as his source of inspiration. Bisbee contributes guitar, synth, bass, and piano, each supporting his plaintive voice and oddball lyrics. --Wally Shoup

    Album Description

Introducing Sam Bisbee, the brand new, grizzled, wide-eyed, overnight, veteran newcomer whose Vehicle has finally arrived with windows rolled down and a stereo pumping Bisbee's familiar yet completely original sound (echoes of David Gray meets Pete Yorn meets U2 meets REM meets Talking Heads meets Elvis Costello) out into the Manhattan air. Sam awoke one morning to the realization that he never wanted to make a DEMO ever again. So he called up some friends (engineers, producers, musicians...) and made this, his debut solo album. "It just happened," says Sam. "And it is the album I've always wanted to make. I made it in a bubble.. No A & R personnel within a 5 block radius. No mention of taking things to 'the next level'. Just music. Pure and simple. For music's sake." Luckily for Sam, the 'friends' he called (all of whom contributed their talents for next to nothing) were not your average friends. Pete Keppler was in the middle of engineering David Bowie's upcoming release when he received a call from Sam. Leona Naess was working on the follow up to her critically acclaimed freshman release on MCA when she heard Sam's voice on the answering machine. Charlie Drayton (Neil Young, B-52's, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop..) was playing an all-star gig when Sam's email scrolled across his cellphone screen. Peter Adams had just come off the road with Tracy Bonham and was on the way to Boston to back up Juliana Hatfield and Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) when he ran into Sam on the street. John Wolfington was about to go to Europe to promote his freshman release on Sonic Youth's Smellslike Records but Sam insisted he bring his guitar and pedal box to the studio. Scott Jacoby, bleary eyed from an all-night session working on a J-Lo remix, couldn't say no. Philip Glass's legendary Looking Glass Studios opened up the doors of Studio B for a price that had Sam wondering how they paid the utility bills every month. Steve Addabbo let Sam use his Shelter! Island Sound's storied recording room for free during down-time. Dave Wike and Dan Green, Sam's core rhythm section, were by his side through it all. It took 10 months. Sometimes as long as 6 weeks would go by in-between times that the studios were available. Elation. Despair. Frustration. Catharsis. All the ingredients were there. Finally, the day came when Sam paid a visit to the final friend on his list, top mastering engineer Emily Lazar. As he spilled the 30 tapes onto her desk Emily thought (out loud): "This is gonna be a mess." But then she heard the music. "This was far and away the best thing Sam's ever done AND the best record we've had in here all year," Emily said. "We were blown away." Now it's your turn. Here it is. Shrinkwrapped. It comes with a seatbelt. And it comes with a world that rushes by windows that you can roll down to let the wind blow back your hair. Take a listen and you'll see what we mean.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, this is the album with the song GM uses in their spots.......2006-03-28

I love this album, and the song Bucket Seat, in paricular.

I do a radio show that has been airing spots from General Motors. Lots of listeners have been searching for that song that GM used in those commercials for awhile that had the words:

    Tell me where you are
And I will jump into my car...

Well, I finally contacted my good friend, Toni Simonetti, who is the head of Corporate Communications at GM. She wrote me back with the answer: the song was not created specifically for GM and their commercials, it was licensed from an album that's several years old. The song is called Bucket Seat, it's sung by Sam Bisbee, and it's available on this CD,

    Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The return of singer/songwriting.......2001-12-29

I have seen Sam Bisbee twice in concert at my college and this album really captures his love of music. He combines a lot of different types of modern and classic rock and makes it his own. His lyrics are fun and interesting. His music isn't catchy which makes it fun to listen to over and over. His CD is constantly in my stereo, along with Bruce Springsteen and David Gray.

this is cerebral rock and roll at its finest.
Sam Bisbee writes rock melodies and lyrics
like no other. It's like waking up from a 10 hour nap
and then having that feeling all day long - his
    music transcends the medium.

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty Darn Good Lohengrin.......2005-04-14

I got this Lohengrin from the local library, and I tried to get a taste of what I was in for by looking it up here on Amazon.com. But to my dismay there were no reviews. And later, to even greater dismay on my part, I found that there is no reason for such a lack of reviews! For this is a solid Lohengrin. While Peter Hofmann is not the most vocally resplendent Lohengrin (he isn't a Konya or a Domingo), he turns is a good performance, and Karen Armstrong is a passionate Elsa who plays the part admirably. The rest of the cast is strong on the whole. But the real splendors of this set spring from the pit - Woldemar Nelsson (of whom I had never heard until I discovered this recording) leads the Beyreuth Festival orchestra in a burning account. They are a truly Wagnerian orchestra (it would be a shame if they weren't), and Nelsson brings out all the Master's colors. The energy of a live performance just pours out. Never have I heard the preludes and prominent sections played with such an intense timbre. It's amazing to hear.

Therefore, though this set doesn't match Kempe, Solti, or Leinsdorf overall, it is a strong alternate set that should not be ignored.

        Album Description

It's not every day you hear something as fresh and familiar as Cabinessence. Call it what you will — psychedelic country, Pet Sounds meets Sweetheart of the Rodeo, plantation art-rock, "Glam Parsons" — it's not country, but it's not exactly not country, either. Rising from the ashes of Springfield's stillborn power-pop outfit Marigold (Outpost Records), Jacob Arnold and Nathan Maricle have grown up, embraced their inner Merle Haggard and put together an alt-country band that would make Marc Bolan proud. Drawing liberally from the varied textures of pop, folk, rock and country music, the sound is as familiar as it is invigorating - and with nods to every nook and cranny in the American pop music pantheon, it's every music geek's wet dream.
