Overwrought and undeniable, Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell remains both one of rock's biggest--and least likely--hit albums. The byproduct of a partnership between beefy singer Marvin Lee "Meat Loaf" Aday and fellow journeyman/National Lampoon Road Show cast member Jim Steinman, Bat out of Hell met 1977's vaunted Year of Punk with a blast of neo-operatic, Wagnerian-scaled bombast (based on Peter Pan, no less) that was as reactionary as anything the spiked set and their supporters could possibly imagine--13 million units worth, and counting. Bat seems to have thrived on the same formula that's made Andrew Lloyd Webber a multimillionaire knight: if you do kitsch, do it big. And what could be more kitschy and emblematic of the '70s than the ubiquitous "classic rock" (an overused adjective that applies all too well here) of "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" or the breathless nookie-quest, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," replete with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play? Neither Jim Steinman nor Meat Loaf have ever been better than on this album. From the first time I heard the first notes of the opening track, I knew I was hearing something special, something that reached for the universal. Something that dared to live, ferociously.

"Bat I" is without a doubt the finest of the three "Bat" albums, achieving much more than its predecessors in 25 less minutes. It was completely plugged into the melodramatic teenage energy that presumably set Steinman on this path in the first place, and that is why it continues to rock new listeners.

Yes, I am using the word masterpiece in reference to a Meatloaf album; and I am not ashamed! Jim Steinman 'the writer of BOOH,' is one of the most overlooked songwriters/arrangers in rock and roll. Todd Rundgren, rock genius/producer/arranger/guitarist on the album, was the only person who agreed to produce the album and that was after a year of rejections for Meat and Steinman. Rundgren arranged all the background vocals as well and they sound just as good as they do on all his solo albums.

The title track is one of the best openers in history and is a Bruce Springsteen esque heavy metal track with the ultimate motor cycle lyrics and the infamous motorcycle guitar 'played by Rundgren in one take.' "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" could be one of the catchiest songs ever written and would fit better in an Andrew Loyd Weber opera than on a 1970's rock album 'but that is the fun of the album.' "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is the best ballad on the album and in the words of many would "forever change the love song."

Yes, Meat Loaf has produced a lot of less-than-stellar albums in the 30 years since Bat I came out; however, this cd is truly essential listening for anyone who is a music fan and is not too proud to listen to Meat Loaf.

First off I love Meatloaf, especially with ketchup. But instead of ketchup we get a lot of cheese with this release, and that's a good thing! Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II are both classic albums, some of the best stuff in rock history--they had two important ingredients: 1. Meatloaf-one of the best singers in rock history--and 2. Jim Steinman--the second best songwriter in rock history (Bob Dylan numero uno) BOOH III is missing the later and the songs that are his on this album are 20-30 years old and some have been around the block with other singers. Meatloaf does conjure up some magic of old with Blind as a Bat, Its All Coming Back to Me Now, Bad For Good, Alive, The Future Aint What it Used to Be. Basically half the album is excellent, it just isnt brilliantly consistent as the first two. That being said it is still a must buy for Meatloaf fans and rock music lovers alike.

An Album for All Occasions.......2007-07-11

I am not exactly a die-hard Meat Loaf fan. From his discography, I have just the three recordings from the "Bat Out of Hell" series, obviously including this one.

I can tell that this is a great CD to enjoy. His collection of opera-rock tunes (like "The Monster Is Loose", "Alive", "In the Land of the Pig, The Butcher is King") blended with some soulful and touchy ballads ("It's All Coming Back to Me", "Cry Over Me" and "Seize the Night") sounds very good and decent, a perfect choice for any type of mood, just like any of the previous albums from the "Bat Out of Hell" trilogy.

Comparing this with his previous albums, one can realize that although the music and the production has changed a bit, the style and the intent was to keep the exact formula that made the previous editions to be so successful as they were.

If you attach the name "Bat out of Hell" to an album, you have to accept that it's being compared to part I and II of those. And that's a problem. Although acceptable as a pure Meatloaf album and not much worse than let's say "Welcome tt Neighbourhood" putting "Bat" on it makes it a simple case of cashing in on a legend for the last time. No wonder Steinman pulled out of this. What is lacking here is the pure adrenaline the real anger and fear that "living on the edge" enviroment both Bat I&II had (on Bat one they simply fought to live on music and on Bat II Meatloaf needed a hit to recover from his bancruptcy). Here this is blatant pompous rock by the numbers without soul. The choice of Songs is very bad (B grade Steinman and wannabe Steinman imposters) at the end I was actually expecting "Out of the Frying Pan" too.

Stay clear of this one. It's got no soul. So it is of no importance.

And stay clear of Meatloaf live to, he's lost it somewhere in the last 5 years. I saw him twice and he utterly disappointed me. He should just retire his singing career and concentrate on acting.

Don't have the time (or the props) to watch the whole movie? Just put on the soundtrack--it's got all the best parts without the dialog in-between! Well, isn't that what an Original Soundtrack Recording like this is supposed to be? Back in the mid-70s when The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a midnight staple at countless movie theaters, Tim Curry wasn't yet "Tim Curry" and Susan Sarandon wasn't yet "Susan Sarandon" (hell, Barry Bostwick wasn't even "Barry Bostwick"!). Listening to these science-fiction double-feature showtunes will take you back through a time warp to the days when the now-Academy-Award-winning actress was perfectly willing to stand around for most of a picture in her bra and panties--and so would her boyfriend! In those days, they were just Brad and Janet, forced to spend a dark and stormy (also sexy) night in the haunted house of mad scientist Frank N. I love the Rocky Horror Picture Show! Talk about a classic that shows off Tim Curry's vocal talents. Susan Sarandon is equally stunning in her role as a sweet, naive girl who grows a bit wild as the movie rolls on.

The basic premise of the movie is that it's a send-up of all the classic 1950s horror films, complete with a mad scientist creating his own monster, and the sweet innocent couple who bumble their way into this all. Toss in the wild 70s style free-love, space aliens, cross dressing and some truly classic lines, and you can see why this has become the favorite of many people.

Just about every song in here is one that you have great fun singing along with. The lyrics are great. The vocals are great. Tim Curry really has a fantastic voice that you have to hear to believe. You not only want to sing along with the songs, but get up and dance too! Then you have the sweet, harmonious songs too, the ones that really connect with your soul.

It definitely helps to see the movie a few times, to understand the great visuals that go along with the song - but once you've got that down, play the CD in your car, while you do your chores, or while you're getting work done! It makes the time fly by, and leaves you upbeat and enjoying life.

Even though the days of Rocky Horror being the midnight movie every Saturday night are gone, it is nice to re-live that era occasionally at home. Adding dialogue is still fun, but unless you have the carpet cleaner scheduled for the next day you better leave it at that!

At a certain point, bad taste and bombast becomes so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to the warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat Out of Hell. Once again songwriter/producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

Bat Out of Hell is probably remembered most for its rock operetta about every teenage boy's plight, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." Certainly the most dramatic piece on the album, it engaged Meat Loaf's testosterone-crazed tenor in an incremental game of sexual bargaining with the resistant, but willing, Ellen Foley. WOW! What an album. This album is fantastic and made Meat Loaf a living legend aswell as spawning some of the most memorable and recognised songs ever. It was 'Bat out of hell', 'You took the words right out of my mouth', and `Paradise by the dasboard light `and' Two out of three ain't bad' which made an unlikely superstar out of Meat Loaf.
Every single song on this album is fantastic and it's been a while since I've actually heard an album that doesn't contain a single 'album filler'. This is why the album has lasted as long as it has. It's is one of the biggest selling albums of all time and has stayed it the UK charts for more than 474 weeks (That's over 9 years!). Bat out of hell was #36 in the US music charts in 1990 thirteen years after its release! And has sold over 35 million copies worldwide and is still selling today.

Meat Loaf is known as the Pavarotti of rock and this album really shows off his operatic, bombastic, over the top and theatrical style of music. This album is vital to anyone's music collection and if you haven't got a copy yet, it is well worth getting. I'm a huge Meat Loaf fan but I do not lie when I come to reviewing his music. Personally I think this album is an absolute masterpiece and is the proof that Meat Loaf is still, larger than life... and always will be.

this cd is one of the best I've heard.Every instrument in every song just seems to fall into place.The vocals are remarkable and the lyrics make sense for every track.It's unbelieveable how many times I can listen to this album.i highly recommend this album.Of course the best tracks are bat out of hell and paradise by the dashhboard light.pick this cd up now!

Bat and Bat II were inspirational. Those two albums carried me through college and long nights of studying for finals and writing papers. As for Bat III, it was ok. If Bat III had been my first exposure to Meatloaf I probably would not have become such a fan, it is not nearly as fine as the first two, but like I said, two out of three ain't bad...

At a certain point, bad taste and bombast become so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat out of Hell. Once again songwriter-producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Worth getting just for the remastered sound........2007-05-15

While I realize that the 1st Bat out of Hell album is regarded more highly than the 2nd album, Bat out of Hell 2: Back into Hell will always be my personal favorite of the 2 as well as my favorite Meat Loaf album of all time.

Origianlly released in 1993, this release put Meat Loaf back on top of the music world after a massive slump (especially here in the states) during the 80's in which most people had forgotten about him and written him off as a has been or a one album wonder.

Composer Jim Steinman (who also arranged everything) took over production duties on this album and it is just pure unadulterated Steinman. This is what Steinman's 1980 solo album Bad to be Good (which was supposed to be the true followup to Bat out of Hell) might have been like in terms of quality if Meat Loaf hadn't gotten strung out on drugs and lost his singing voice for a short time.

I can't really say much more positive about this album that people haven't already done on the multitude of reviews for the regular CD. Truly great music and it never fails to get me in a good mood when listening to it as well, which I can't say that about a lot of music. While the songs are very long at times, they never outstay their welcome.

Anyway, the main purpose of my review is to review the 2002 reissue (or deluxe edition) of the 1993 album.

While I had had the original 1993 CD since it came out, I was always a bit let down by the mastering job on the CD. The overall volume could have been done a bit higher and the album just lacked a certain punch in terms of the overall audio at times. This is especially surprising since by 1993 pretty much CD had completely taken over by that point and people had figured out how to properly master stuff for CD audio as well. The CD didn't sound bad per se, but it could've been done better at the same time.

This 2002 deluxe edition fixes all of the mastering issues I had by doing a 24 bit digital remastering of the album. All I can say is that my jaw was on the floor as to how much better the album sounds now. In fact, it finally sounds perfect!

the overall volume level now maxes out without having any digital clipping issues and the overall sound just sounds more vibrant with more clarity between all of the instruments/vocal parts. There is more punch to the low end as well without the mix being altered. Basically, this album now sounds absolutely perfect and this is the way the CD should have been mastered in the first place.

The 2nd CD is pretty much pointless and redundant as it just feautres edited single versions of album tracks along with some remixes. No live cuts are present which should have been included as well. I guess this is cool from a historical/completist viewpoint, but no one will ever listen to Disc 2 for the most part.

But I bought this mainly due to the remastered sound and in that respect I wasn't disappoitned. If you are an audiophile and like to have the absolute best sounding version of your favorite albums (or classic releases like this), then you owe it to yourself to upgrade to this deluxe edition if you are as big of a fan of Bat out of Hell 2 as I am.

I had owned the 1993 Bat out of Hell 2 album for many years, since high school, and to this this day I can never get tired of any of the songs! Jim Steinman is a genius when it comes to grand rock bombast, and in this remastered release, the sound quality is better than ever. As far as the 2nd CD goes, I like the first couple of edited songs, especially the Radio Edited "I'd Do Anything for Love," since that was the one that hooked me to Meatloaf in the first place. Still, I'll always enjoy listening to the full 12-minute version more.

There is nothing else in popular music that comes close to equalling this masterpiece!!!! If nothing else, BAT OUT OF HELL II: BACK INTO HELL is worth buying for the first two tracks, "I'd Do Anything Fo Love (But I Won't Do That)" and "Life Is A Lemon And I Want My Money Back" and for "Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are". Everything about the songs is overblown but that's the point about it; the first BAT OUT OF HELL notwithstanding, there has never been anything like this in popular music before or since!!!! The songs and the sound quality are excellent, and despite being 10-12 minutes in length, "I'd Do Anything For Love..." and "Objects In The Rear View Mirror..." are worth listening to all the way through!!!! The Deluxe Edition remasters the original album while adding a bonus disc with multiple single edits and remixes of four tracks ("I'd Do Anything...", "Life Is A Lemon...", "Objects In The Rear View..." and "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through"). Go back into hell with BAT OUT OF HELL II!!!!!

This album is one I've enjoyed for years. The soaring vocals, the different depths of music, its really an enjoyable experience. The songs stay with you long after you stop listening. There's a lot more going on musically in this one cd than any of the new artists that are out there. A must for everyone.
