Amazon.com essential recording

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber's seemingly endless run of Broadway shows, when he was known primarily for Jesus Christ Superstar, he managed to write this dramatic, tuneful, occasionally powerful religious work. Although Lloyd Webber takes some liberties with the text and organization of the traditional Requiem mass, the result is a unified and finely crafted composition. There are exciting moments in the "Dies irae" and in the "Lacrymosa", where voices and orchestra are most effectively used to convey the desperate yet hopeful feeling of the text. This work isn't performed much these days in its entirety, but, as in many of Lloyd Webber's musicals, it produced a "hit" tune--the "Pie Jesu"--whose popularity alone could have kept the composer living comfortably for the rest of his life. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sir Andrew should stick to musicals.......2007-03-14

What's not to like about Andrew Lloyd Webber? Well, his attempt at liturgical composition. This work blends Old with New NOT very harmoniously. Much of the score rings of tunes reminiscent from his other works such as CATS, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera. His obviously intentional cacophony in places causes one to wonder if perhaps he had unresolved altar boy issues! Even if one wants to argue that musically, the piece is impressive, the volume levels of this recording make it difficult to listen to without having to constantly adjust the knob.

2 out of 5 stars One Great Song.......2007-03-13

This piece sounds like a musical and proves Sir Webber should stick to that medium. I bought this disk for one and only one cut; Pia Jesu. This is as beautiful a piece of music as I've heard and the credit goes as much to the boy tenor as to Webber.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite good enough...........2007-02-14

In reading these reviews, the smart people will always say things like "But don't compare this work to Verdi or Mozart". Which is the musical equivelent of "Those guys were good...but this Lloyd Webber guy...". This is the feeling I get listening to this CD. And before I get typecast as a "classical" snob (even though Verdi was romantic), I will point to the Alfred Schnittke Requiem for proof that effective music CAN be written in a wholy modern style. But this steamer just doesn't do it. Ray of light, though was Lorin Maazel, who does the best he can with a work that just doesn't give you anything after the 200th time you listen to it, unlike the above mentioned works. I hope he wasn't in charge of the solists, because they seem to be stuck on one idea throughout (Domingo, sing really really loud throughout without any emotional sub-text! Honestly, why is this guy so famous?). Really folks, there are better Requiems out there, in every respect possible. Buy those. Make Robert Shaw's family a bit richer. Seroiusly, it's like Webber cut and pasted the music at random, without caring, but not in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Only game in town.......2006-11-10

Thank goodness this is a top-notch performance and recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber Requiem since the only one available.

5 out of 5 stars ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S MOST SOLEMN PIECE OF MUSIC.......2006-09-17

When Andrew Lloyd Webber's father William, a classical composer in his own right, died in 1982, his by that time famous son decided to commemorate his death with a piece of newly composed music. But it was not the musical that ALW had in mind for this intimate occasion; he rather returned to his own classical roots he acquired while frequenting the Westminster music school, where his father was an organist.

The result of this effort is captured on this CD in form of a requiem mass. This precise form, immortalized by the likes of Verdi and Mozart in the past, seems an awkward and a rather risky choice for a composer who became famous by revitalizing the concept and the perception of the modern musical theatre. And yet, the whole piece managed not only to be embraced by the public, but also it established itself as an important contribution to the genre.

All of the mass parts as recorded on this CD manage to invoke the much needed feeling this type of work requires. The opening `Requiem and Kyrie' number, with its gentle tune, a moving chorus accompaniment and the mixture of the capital voices leaves a deep and haunting feeling with the listener. We can oppose such quiet and dark moments with the fiery strength of `Dies irae', whose music captures the dramatic pace of the written word. `Hosanna', on the other hand, is something you would expect out of this composer-a big, lush melody, with strong choral back up and crescendos. One must also make reference to `Pie Jesu', probably the most touching passage in this score, which became the best known part from this whole piece. Its gentle melody works better as a part of the whole score. Nowadays it reached a new generation of listeners when it was recorded by a young soprano Charlotte Church.

One of the sources this requiem draws its power from is its cast. It was conceived for a high soprano, a treble and a tenor. The soloists who sing these voices are of top class. We have Sarah Brightman (who was then married to Lloyd Webber), Placido Domingo (who reached international stardom a couple of years later as one of the three tenors) and a young boy Paul Miles-Kinsgston. Their voices are perfect for the score and make an excellent bland. Lorin Maazel, a world famous maestro, conducted both this recording and the subsequent world premiere performance in February 1985 at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in New York.

Both the album and the single `Pie Jesu' reached the UK top 10 and the critics honored this piece by awarding Andrew Lloyd Webber a Grammy Award for the best contemporary classical piece.

The other important point this score makes is the fact how gifted a composer ALW really is, easily moving between the world of the classical and the musical theatre music, something his detractors have never seem to grasp or appreciate. This CD is therefore both the proof of a talent as it is a successful representative of the genre.

The fans of this style should have no trouble in liking it and it should also make a nice addition to the collection of ALW's work. Also, it may just serve as a much needed comfort during the time of mourning. When my 93-year old great grandmother Monika died this January, this music was a perfect choice to listen to while thinking about the loss of a loved person and commemorating the event in a most personal way. I would like to dedicate this review to the memory of her.

    Album Description

What began as a quick knock out single by Pop master Geoff Stephens, the track 'Winchester Cathedral' accidentally became a #1 hit all over the world. Voiced in a session by John Carter, Stephens then quickly needed a group to follow up with the promotion. A hasty call to drummer and group leader Henry Harrison, then with his own R&B band (Cops n Robbers), set the wheels in motion and The New Vaudeville Band came alive, to enjoy a lengthy career well into the late 1970's. Collected here are the complete recordings credited to The New Vaudeville Band , plus a couple of unreleased tracks and song writing demos (including John Carter's demo of 'Winchester Cathedral' ). This is the first time on CD for all but the title track, and the LPs have not been available in over 30 years. Includes the international hits 'Winchester Cathedral', 'Peek A Boo', 'Finchley Central' and 'Green Street Green'. Liner notes include interviews with Geoff Stephens and John Carter. RPM. 2007.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Heavenly!!.......1999-06-14

The Coronation is an incredible work of art that is so beautiful that it often brings tears to my eyes. Mozart has captured the Divine in this piece. I bought this particular recording because it also includes the Vesperae Solennes which is another beatiful piece. The Vesperae is not as strong as the Coronation but the Laudate Dominum (track 12) is INCREDIBLY beautiful and easily makes up for what the other parts lack. I also really enjoy the Epistle Sonata (track 3) which is not a part of the original Coronation, but works really well as a transitional piece. I rated this CD only 4 stars because I am not happy with the recording, there is a lot of background static and hiss which surprised me to hear on a CD. It also has a somewhat flat sound. I originally heard this work on a beat-up, dusty LP and somehow the LP has more depth (but much more static). I HIGHLY recommend the Coronation, Vesperae, and Epistle Sonata, however, I recommend finding a more recent recording on a different label that includes all 3 pieces. Favorite tracks: # 12 and 7 are my favorite, then 1,2,3,6, &8.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a delight guaranteed to please even the cautious........1999-03-02

Christopher Hogwood and company score again with a rousing yet reverant telling of two of Mozart's less frequently heard choral works. The Coronation Mass is a thrill; crisply sung with refreshingly clear intonation and toning. The solo quartet features uniformly strong singers who zip and soar with Mozartian ease. It's been quite a while since I've heard as strong a quartet as this. This production of the Mass alone would place Mozart on a pedestal!

The production of the Vesperae Solennes is also majestic and exuberant. The Laudate Dominum is clearly the strongest of the movements; the soprano solo literally floats above what must be heaven itself.

The latin is not the vulgare pronounciation usually heard in choral readings - but that quibbling can be left to scholars. The rest of us can just hook up and enjoy.

Mammas - play this for your babies and they will never grow up to be cowboys!

I, too, grew up singing and enjoying many of these songs in the '60s. As pointed out by other reviewers, it's not the same without some of the original songs which were on the album. Still worth owning, but a slight disappointment. I notice there's a new release coming out in February of 2007; perhaps this one will have the deleted tracks on it? Here's hoping!

5 out of 5 stars One of the CORNIEST but enjoyable records ever.......2006-06-17

I used to have this in LP. I bought it because I'm crazy about stuff about the 1920s! It's not deep or meaningful, but so what? It's happy, peppy and just fun. About 12 years or so ago, I actually rounded up a group of people and choreographed at dance number to Tap Your Feet (and go bo do oh de oh)...We wore 1920s flapper outfits and performed at a few holiday parties and it was a hit!

I must say though, I am disappointed that they took "Whatever Happened To Phyllis Puke?" off the album. They could've at least replaced it with their rendition of the theme from Thoroughly Modern Millie. If you ever get to to hear that one, you're in for a real treat!

Overall, though, I recommend the CD as a great "gag" gift for someone...or just as a giddy, goofy, guilty pleasure of your own. Throw a Sunday afternoon Tea dance and Charleston the day away.... Boo Boop a doop! LOL!

5 out of 5 stars Reviving the thirties style in the sixties.......2005-04-25

One of the features of popular music is that there is always room for nostalgia. While some now look back on the sixties as a musical golden age, there were (during the sixties) several groups that were looking back to earlier eras. Among them were the Temperance Seven, the Migil 5 and the New Vaudeville Band.

The New Vaudeville Band's music was firmly rooted in the thirties although much of their material was original (unlike that of the other groups mentioned, who mainly recorded covers of songs from their chosen era), written to sound like it could have been vaudeville music of the thirties. They had four UK hits, these being Winchester Cathedral (a UK top five hit that made number one in America), Peek-a-boo (a UK top ten hit omitted from this compilation), Finchley Central (which just missed the UK top ten) and Green Street Green (a minor UK hit). Despite the phenomenal American success of Winchester Cathedral, none of their other UK hits charted in America.

While it is common for American pop (and country) songs to refer to specific locations, it is much less common for British pop songs to do so. It therefore comes a surprise to find that three of this group's four hits are about specific locations. Fans of the group should have no difficulty finding Winchester Cathedral between London and Southampton. Finchley Central is a London Underground station that can easily be reached from Baker Street (of Gerry Rafferty fame - perhaps the most famous location-based British pop song). Green Street Green is near Orpington to the south east of London.

This compilation is based on out-of-print British compilation that had 24 tracks including Peek-a-boo and great covers of I wonder who's kissing her now, Lili Marlene, A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square and Shine on harvest moon..

If you enjoy Winchester Cathedral, you will surely enjoy the rest of this fine collection.

    1 out of 5 stars beware...........2005-03-11

My wife and I listened to this album while we were dating in 1966. We had the album and 8-track tape. She recently asked me to get the CD, because we always like the songs, and especially because her name is Amy, which is the title to one of the songs. What is now being sold is NOT the original album, and as you can see from other posts here, most of the good songs have been replaced. "Kind of a Hush"???...let Herman sing it. This is truly a disappointment. If you want to hear the music as it should be, you'll have to buy an original album..

It would be easy to dismiss Clinic as a novelty act--they insist on appearing in public in surgical scrubs, feature the melodica prominently in all of their songs, and they toured with Radiohead during the willfully difficult Kid A period. But how long does anyone really expect a band that shares its hometown with the Beatles to cruise on gimmicks alone? Clinic's third album, the follow-up to 2002's Grammy-nominated Walking With Thee, bustles with sharp, angular pop melodies. Sure, it takes some digging to get to, but beneath the eerie keyboards and woozy guitars that form thick storm clouds of noise linger jagged, oddly-titled gems like "The Majestic #2" and "W.D.Y.Y.B." --Aidin Vaziri

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars but i'm a Clinic fan.......2006-06-09

Internal Wrangler has a sound for those who prefer the raw and garage, though some complain that it sounds rough and sloppy.
Walking With Thee, more polished and mainstream-like, a sound for those who prefer the clean(er) pop/rock energy, but some feel that it doesn't have the raw edge of Internal Wrangler.

Winchester Cathedral... some complain it's boring or lacking in the same energy. It doesn't have the same 'retro' style as the last couple albums. Instead, the album as a whole, has a more whimsical sound, sometimes eerie and sometimes dreamy. If I had to make a comparison, for those who have the last two albums think "Goodnight Georgie" and somewhat "For the Wars". More clarinet heavy than percussion.

The punk/garage sound lives in "W.D.Y.Y.B." and the instrumental "Vertical Take Off In Egypt". "The Magician" and "August" seem a bit like a manic and twisted carnival. "Home" and "Falstaff" have a sound like a weary-eyed crooner; slow, desperate, and melancholic. "Country Mile", "Circle of Fifths", and "Thank You For Living" are somewhat reminiscent of the last two, but heavier atmospheric-ly.

In my opinion all of the tracks are great, just different, more blue in some way. A new vision to make one wonder where they are going with the next album.

Songs to note: "Anne", "The Magician", "Falstaff", and "W.D.Y.Y.B."

4 out of 5 stars Clinic: Winchester Cathedral (Domino).......2005-08-24

Chances are this may not help, but bare with me. Clinic is an eccentric band bown to their scrubs. Call the doctor scrubs, amsks and clothes a gimmick, but sometimes aa band has to do what they have to for attention and a focused viewpoint in music...just like other bands that are influenced by The Pixies and reside in Liverpool. Now to the CD. One listen to this and you may get a cutdown of sound since Clinic's Internal Wrangler, but you gotto admit anyway, that it is a magical masterpiece to behold. I did. Once I listen to it, it was the toast of my iPod. And the thing is the review will be less helpful because I can't describe this album but magical, amazing and as essential as Internal Wrangler. "Fingers" is a song that rounded up everysong in meaning. The highlight besides "Thank You (For Living)" (my personal favorite), The Majestic #2, and "The Magician". I swear, this is not a CD to pass up. Clinic is not a band to pass up. Give it a chacne and you will see how different and hauntigly stunning this album is.

4 out of 5 stars Consistent and Steady Genius.......2005-02-22

With the flurry of negative reviews, I half expected it to be the blow out disappointment that was Coral's Magic And Medicine.
Hardly! Is it the radical rethink that the band promised it to be? Not at all. If anything, the band errs on the conservative side of things. And with such a unique sound, I don't know if I blame 'em. The differences between this and Walking With Thee is just little less organ and a little more woodwinds. The soft bits, the chaotic bits, and the manic mumble of Blackburn are all here. I suspect that the novice listener will be as blown away or confused as if they started at the beginning. Okay it is not the best Clinic album (Internal Wrangler has that all sown up) but it is still very good. The band seems to be engaged on interplay level and not messing up what makes them Clinic. So I am happy. I think that in five to seven years, you will be suprised to see where they wind up. At the careful increments the band releases their singular sound, the concise 30 plus mark, I will never be bored. Just when you get it, they are gone. Nice work, doctors. In short if I was at a party where this was blasting out, I'd hang around. The conversation would be fascinating.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it's the worst Clinic record, but still..........2005-02-13

Taken on its merits, let's face it: this is easily a four star record. What many pundits (and even Clinic fans) have fixated on is the relative lack of change in their sound over the course of three albums (and several ep's). While I understand this view, to a certain degree, I think that using such a standard would also damn many other great bands that created an iconoclastic sound, then milked it for all it's worth. Think Ramones. Think AC/DC. Think U2, even! Sure, they've veered off their trademark sound over the course of their long career, but with one or two exceptions, those have been their least successful records, artistically and commercially (yes, "Pop," I'm talking to you). So, what I'm saying is, to say that Clinic are treading water is only fair inasmuch as the music fails to move or excite the listener.

On that score, I'll concede, this is Clinic's weakest record. But, as I am a huge fan of the first three (especially "Wrangler" and "Three EP's," both of which I consider essential), this is not to imply that I dislike this album - I think it's very good. And I agree with the others here who've said that there is growth to be found here - especially in the doo-wop fixtures of the great tune "Falstaff," and in some new sonic trickery here and there.

I won't pretend that wouldn't like Clinic to start to move their sound into some new areas, but again, in subtle ways, I think they are doing so, and I think that album is a tentative step in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars " the deranged and genius craftsmen do it again".......2004-12-30

Let me start my review off by saying "this IS a new and experimental clinic album". I agree that the first few times I listened to this album , I thought it was good but just a tired routine of song structure and different melodies that can be heard throughout Internal Wrangler and Walking With Thee . But after listening to Winchester a few more times ,I REALLY figured these guys out , their whole method , and foundation for their music . Clinic is a band that peaked at the beginning of their musical career by creating a sound that was fresh , genius , and unparalled in everyway . I've read the other reviews saying that clinic fans would complain that they've heard it all before ; well , of course they have, that's the way clinic does it , they use the same instruments , angst , and song writing method in all their albums but mix them around ,heighten them and border new and fresh sounding clinic in every song . Fans of Clinic would agree with me when i say that one could easily take Clinic as being an inaudible band lyric- wise ,that just creates crazy and catchy music. Of course , Clinic are catchy but people seriously , look , you have to really listen to Clinic to understand that their music is something that is shrouded in mystery and lets the listener pick up what the normal braindead music listener would think static and really hear the lyrics out and understand WHY they are sung the way they are.
First of all ,take the name of this great band:Clinic ,and why are they called Clinic? Well , because their music is written through a deranged and wacky persona that these four guys were able to create. Their music is sung and written in the perspective of troubled minds or troubled situations not being handled well mentally and thrown into a frenzy of what is the music of this band ,Clinic. Now , take one of the songs on Internal Wrangler :"The Second Line" .This is one of their best and most catchy songs ,and why is this song called "The Second Line" ? Well , people , honestly ,look, the song is about War or the paranoia of oncoming War.I've been able to pick up some lyrics to back me up on this for example ," I sit here while come a come a come , sit here while come a come a come , come a come a come , come a come a come ,come a come a come Wars" and if that is not enough for you the band does make another reference to War in Walking with Thee , in the song "For the Wars".Look people I might be wrong or right about the lyrics , but am I really pushing it by assuming the band wrote something like this , the band IS called Clinic they've written deranged , beautiful and disturbing songs that are very satiric of society and use dark humor. Clinic IS a very dark and angry band , but only looking at this side of the band and their lyrics is stupid and not really what the band wants , and I've read interviews saying that the band write their song with a humorous side to them but could be misunderstood as being TOTAL letdowns. Let me point out what I mean about this band's dark humor with the song "Anne",here are some lyrics i've picked up" Anne we love , Anne we would'nt judge you anything you might do , Once so full of laughing rolling , Once so full of laughter , oh , No longer would you be Told". In my opinion this song portrays the nervous guardians of this young rebellious girl named Anne , and how they are telling her that they won't judge here on her actions. you can take this as dark humor , or you could see that it is funny because it IS true in many cases. This concludes my long and in some cases , very annoying and detail biting review of this great album . Clinic fans that call themselves "fans', who proclaim they've heard it all before are only scratching the surface of this album , and i suggest they give it a few more good listens , so they can't try to get to the real fruit of Winchester Cathedral.

Throughout his career, Christopher Hogwood has managed to synthesize the insights of the music scholar and the practical experience of the performer with unusually fruitful results. He has been one of the most influential conductors in extending the precepts of "historically informed performance" beyond a specialized constituency to a mainstream audience, above all in the music of Mozart, as in his acclaimed account of the complete symphonies. This recording of the Mass in C Minor represents one of Hogwood's finest interpretations. It's a sterling example of the conductor's ability to scrub away the crusty patina of received traditions so that we can hear Mozart with fresh ears. The use of period instruments and boy trebles in the chorus allows Hogwood to blend voices and orchestra with remarkable transparency, whether in the brooding Kyrie or the joyful punctuation of the Gloria. Hogwood's fluid sense of Mozartian line shows him thinking not in measures but in wonderfully long-spun phrases--notice the fleet grace of the Laudamus te--that he colors and shades with supple variety. Yet he also brings out the architectural grandeur of Mozart's exuberant polyphony and brass girding. Richard Maunder's edition fleshes out the unfinished score's torso by reconstructing the Sanctus and Osanna and filling out the orchestration in the Credo movements. The quartet of soloists is excellently balanced, with particularly fine contributions from the two sopranos. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable singing and direction, unremarkable playing.......2004-10-31

All of the previous reviews of this gloriously sung mass are correct: the period band is slight and not powerful enough to project over the marvelous singers, while the singers -- which is what this is about -- are uniformly outstanding.

Perhaps most outstanding is the contribution of the late lamented soprano Arleen Auger, whose voice and timbre were wondrous for this recording with Christopher Hogwood, the Academy of Ancient Music and Winchester Cathedral Choir with soloists Lynne Dawson, John Mark Ainsley and David Thomas. Aside from the thin orchestral support, there is nary a weak link in the group and a great many outstanding performances. True to his character, Hogwood collaborates with engineers to bring forth a crystal clear and transparent recording that is long on weight and fortitude while adhering to the religious joys inherent in the music.

I am variably troubled by the substituion of a boy's choir for an adult women's section, which I find authentic but results in a mass less kaleidoscopic than normal and not particularly weighty. This, coupled with the lean support given by the thin as a rail string section and disappearing act by the woodwinds of the AAM, keeps this performance from being a five star job. Still, if singing is the main ingredient for you, you may look long and diligently to find one that matches this.

Traditionalists should find what they want from the bargain twofer by Colin Davis of this mass, the Requiem and another mass on Philips. The performances, recorded made during the 1970s, are traditional and include large choirs with famous soloists and a conductor that emphasizes vocal and instrumental drama over religiousity. A reverberant acoustic makes his C Minor Mass one to remember, as well.

4 out of 5 stars Period instrument recordings are always better.......2003-12-06

I can see Chicago's point. Unfortunately the balance between the voices and the orchestra is lacking and it is one of Hogwoods weaker recordings. Having stated that, listening to Mozart on period instruments (even at it's weakest) is better than any other recording of the Mass in C minor that I have ever heard. For those of you who purchase this item, Hogwoods recording of Mozart's Requiem mass is absolute perfection.

    2 out of 5 stars A bitter disappointment.......1999-12-20

Normally, I am a great fan of Christopher Hogwood/the Academy of Ancient Music and their recordings. It was therefore with great anticipation that I listened to their recording of Mozart's C Minor mass, a piece which I was already quite familiar with and fond of. My anticipation soon turned to disappointment, however, for on this recording the voices -- the chorus in particular, but the soloists as well -- totally drown out the instrumental forces. To be sure, the singing is beautiful; but certainly the orchestra would sound beautiful, too, if one could only hear it. I suppose this is not the fault of Hogwood or the AAM, but rather of the recording technicians, who failed to achieve a proper balance. I now wish I had purchased another recording

    5 out of 5 stars 100% pure & unequivocable EXCELLENCE !.......1999-11-03

Of the many different recordings of this masterpiece that I have already heard, this truly is OUTSTANDING...the nearest thing to pure heaven. Above all, it acts as a true testament to the finest choral tradition in the world; that of the English Cathedral.

Beware of this CD -- I tried two copies of it, and neither copy was readable by my relatively new, state-of-the-art player. Before this CD, the only CDs not readable by my player were ones that friends had burned for me. Hyperion's quality is hit-or-miss, so consider a different recording of Haydn's "Harmonie" Mass before plunking down nearly $18 for this one.

Byrd's three Latin masses are among the finest choral works ever written, and this performance of the five-part mass by Winchester Cathedral Choir is among the best on disc. With its pleasingly bright and unified treble sound and clear, well-balanced inner voices, the textural beauty of Byrd's work comes through perfectly. The mass movements are interspersed with propers for the Feast of Corpus Christi, and the disc concludes with other Byrd compositions, including the exquisite motet Ave verum corpus. --David Vernier

I'm certainly no expert in this field of music. I came across it as it was used on an audio CD I have as music between chapters (Gunpowder Treason & Plot - find it on Amazon.co.uk) and managed to set the scene perfectly. Its also a Hyperion disc which means the sound is simply stunning. It stands out from budget classicla CD's a mile - it really is worth the exctra money. Put this music on as you go to sleep and as you wake up and you I guarantee you will have a good day!
