4 out of 5 stars Criminally underrated gem.......2007-06-03

After achieving so much with their band, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora decided to go their own ways and see what they could do as solo artists. Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory proved to be an immediate success, both musically and commercially; while Sambora released his debut a year later to mixed reviews. Although the average Bon Jovi fan took to the album right away, from a commercial standpoint, it didn't earn Sambora quite what he may have hoped for. Regardless, musically, Stranger in This Town is a terribly overlooked gem, and it exudes unadulterated songwriting brilliance.

Behind Richie Sambora, there are two of his long-time band mates: David Bryan on keyboards and Tico Torres on drums. Torres' playing strictly serves the purpose of the songs; he doesn't really do any lengthy drum acrobatics, but there are pieces that allow him to shine through. Bryan, on the other hand, is integral to the overall sound of the album, as his keyboards are, at some point, the defining factors of the songs. Also, he co-wrote two tracks: the beautiful album intro "Rest in Peace", a wonderful song based on profound blues licks and Sambora's emotive vocals; and the ambitious title track, which sees the duo merging nifty acoustic guitars with delicate synth lines. Bryan is also highly audible on the truly moving ballad "Father Time", complete with Desmond Child's signature hooks, distant female vocals, and a warm melodic edge.

Though a solo album, only three of the ten songs were written entirely by Richie Sambora. "Church of Desire" is the mid-paced piece, centred around moody keyboards and blues-inflected guitar riffs. The song is carried by a thick bass groove, and Sambora's guitar solo is truly heartfelt and emotional. On "River of Love", Tony Levin's bass arpeggios become central to the piece, especially when supported by Torres' spare drum beats. Finally, "Mr Bluesman", by many known as the album's minor hit, Sambora's greatest influence, Eric Clapton, makes a guest appearance playing an improvised blues solo where he rips it up. Despite its five-minute running time, even Torres gets to play a brief drum solo, yet it's all within the context of the song and the writing is truly impressive.

That said, the album being more on the blues rock spectrum of things didn't really produce any radio hits. Actually, Sambora did collaborate with Desmond Child on two tracks, one of them being "Rosie", arguably the most popular cut off of this track. Also co-written by Jon Bon Jovi, the piece has a solid hook, but truth be told, it does not gel that well with the rest of the pieces, which seem more honest and from the heart. Likewise, "One Light Burning" might have been his take on poppier songwriting; he tries to merge cool beats and percussion work with Randy Jackson's bass playing whilst injecting the piece with a sing-along main chorus, but it doesn't really work -- Sambora is simply more of a blues-ridden rock guitarist than someone who can churn out easily accessible melodies. That's obviously Jon Bon Jovi's strong side.

Stranger in This Town is in many ways better than most of the Bon Jovi catalog. Even after sixteen years, most of the songs are still timeless and still imbued with emotional power. It's also filled with material we'd normally never hear on a Bon Jovi release, so kudos to Sambora. He was totally right when he wrote that "listening instruction" in the liner notes: "Turn down the lights, light a candle... Welcome..."

5 out of 5 stars The CD you would take to a deserted island.......2007-03-22

If you like the blues that has been modernised you will love this cd. It is ashame his following cd did not keep with the blues feel Richie Sambora could of taken over for Clapton for a new generation of blues fans.

4 out of 5 stars Richie is just as good alone.......2007-01-18

While best known for his jammin licks in the band Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora holds his own this solo album. Full of grit and soul.

3 out of 5 stars A window to a guy who is often in the shadows.......2006-04-26

Richie Sambora, guitarist of stadium rockers we all know (and either loathe or love) put this disc out in those bygone days of 1991 and - surprised us.

We didn't get a bunch of 2nd rate BJ tunes. We didn't get endless widdly diddly excess nor crap attempts at showing a blues/roots tinge.

What we got was an album that really opened up some possibilities for Richie. There were typical soft rock tunes like hit 'Ballad of Youth', youthful love gone wrong tracks like 'Rosie' but there was also more on display.

The more on display is a guy with some body to his music, with an ear for a decent tune, a guy who with this album has perhaps shown the world that he isn't just a guitar player but a musician.

Taken as a whole I can't give this album more than three stars as it's a bit overwrought in places and a little too understated too often/too long in other parts. But it does give anyone into melodic hard rock or BJ or afficianados of 80's rock a real glimpse at a guy who definitely has a voice of his own. Any fan of this genre should try to at least hear this disc. More metal fans may find the whole thing somewhat wanting in ooommpphhh.

5 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Blues Rock Gem.......2006-03-23

I have been a Bon Jovi fan for over twenty years and always thought Richie Sambora was very underrated and unappreciated for his guitar playing. Happened to pick this CD up out of curiosity recently and WoW.

This is a great album. Deserves to be heard. It is very Blues influenced and doesn't sound like Bon Jovi at all.

Just buy it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.

Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

Album Description

Detroit's Blanche marries the Gun Club's desperation to the Carter Family's melancholy and the creepy playfulness of Lee Hazelwood's "Cowboy In Sweden". The band features the married couple of Tracee Mae Miller (ex-Two Star Tabernacle) and Dan John Miller (ex-Goober And The Peas, Two Star Tabernacle) along with members of American Mars and The Racounteurs. An uneasy waterwheel of pedal steel guitar, banjo, injured guitar, and scant drumming swells and wanes. Dan Miller portrayed Johnny Cash's guitarist, Luther Perkins, in 2005's Cash biopic, "Walk The Line".

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Album Description

Originally released in 2002, "Winnemucca" was recorded at Type Foundry studios in Portland, Oregon by John Askew and Joanna Bolme (Steven Malkmus). "Winnemucca" finds the members of Richmond Fontaine mining a subtler vein than on previous efforts. The album deftly conjures up images of a late night ride through the desert where death, despair, and ultimately hope reign supreme. With "Winnemucca" Richmond Fontaine have established themselves as a band willing to travel where their music takes them.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with the songs.......2006-05-18

It's hard to write an album review when you find yourself in love with certain songs. I would hold true everything the above reviews say about this album. "Northline" is brilliant but the absolute gem on this album is "Western Skyline" - perhaps one of the best "alt-country" songs ever written!!!

5 out of 5 stars Utter Perfection.......2003-01-23

I loved Richmond Fontaine's previous two albums, especially Lost Son, their latest before Winnemucca. But with Winnemucca, Richmond Fontaine have outdone themselves. I must say that this is one of the best, most timeless, touching, and simply gorgeous albums in the entire "alt.country" genre, if not in all music. Willy Vlautin's lyrics are evocative, emotional, and show so much pathos for the type of person i like to call the 'sensitive ...-up'. These types pepper his songs...like the kid being driven by his brother to a jail for low-level offenders (you know, the type who choose to imbibe a substance other than alcohol and have to spend the rest of their life paying for our society's hypocrisy)...and ray thames from 'five degrees below zero' who pawned all his stuff and now has to live at his uncle's due to some imaginable addiction or mess up (as a female ray thames, i know exactly how miserable this kind of thing can be). They reach musical, not just lyrical, epiphany here too, from each tear-jerking pedal steel note to the wails of feedback on the second instrumental "Patty's Retreat", Richmond Fontaine have not gotten the kind of attention that many other past and present alt.country bands have gotten, and all I can say is its a damn shame. They make Uncle Tupelo sound coarse, Ryan Adams sound like a bratty punk, and the supposedly "seminal" Gram Parsons sound like the most overrated performer in the history of the genre. And to the few who may agree with this review, I'd suggest you check out Pinetop Seven, another wonderful and unappreciated 'alt.country' band. Their album "Rigging The Toplights" has the same kind of gorgeous fairground melancholy as "Winnemucca". Also try Hem's debut album, "Rabbit Songs" for a similar kind of beauty with amazing female vocals. If the three of them played LA sometime soon, it would be sheer musical heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Who is Richmond Fontaine?.......2002-06-17

Shades of Jay Farrar and Matthew Ryan. "Five Degrees Below Zero" is worth the price of admission alone. Wish these talented guys out of Oregon would do some touring. Mr. V is a great writer, and I can just sit around all day reciting the lyrics. Great effort!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent alt-country!.......2002-06-15

This CD reverberates with feelings and memories of being isolated and alone, walking along a 2-lane highway, trying to hitch a ride to a new destination. This album is much different than RF's previous albums, and perhaps not as good as the amazing "Miles From", however, the music and lyrics catch the listener's ear and pulls him in like a good novel. As with most of Willy Vlautin's songs, all the songs here tell a story. Most of them entail normal people put though extraordinary circumstances. In "Northern Skyline", a man holds his friend on the side of the road after a car wreck, as he makes promises to the dying man of "glowing light and beautiful women" before he is finally "set free." "Northline" tells the story of a former skinhead girlfriend of the storyteller who had fallen into the traps of her other boyfriend's messed up belief system and disappeares from the narrator's life. Perhaps the most disturbing, yet beautiful song is, "5 Degrees Below Zero" in which the protagonist, in a fit of rage about his life and his surroundings, stops the bus he is on in the middle of nowhere so he can walk out into the freezing elements to his imminent death. RF is not only the engaging lyrics of Mr. Vlautin, but also the incredible pedal steel playing of Paul Brainard, whose simple, but tasty style completes the feeling of each song perfectly. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes eery, Brainard's playing infuses the music with a touch of old-style country and new-psychedelica. The only thing missing from "Winnemucca" is the country punk that it has shown on all of its previous releases. Most of the songs are relaxed, and they are meant to do so...still some of the bands finer moments in the past have been from its Minutemen or X influences.

Chip Taylor, the writer of "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning," abandoned his musical career in the '80s to take up professional gambling. Returning in the '90s, he has taken a stripped-down, rootsy approach across a series of sharp releases. This largely acoustic outing of duets with singer-fiddler Carrie Rodriguez proves again that his hiatus hasn't hurt his songwriting: "Sweet Tequila Blues," "Him Who Saved Me," and the title tune stand with his best work--and up to anyone else's. His calling out for musicians to solo, and the playful comfort exhibited with Ms. Rodriguez, lend an air of casualness to the proceedings, but make no mistake, Let's Leave This Town is a passionate, finely crafted record. "Back porch" music is one of life's joys, and the intimacy of a musician or group of musicians performing for a small circle of friends and family is magical in a way that is hard to capture on disc. Kudos to Chip Taylor as producer for making you feel that he and Ms. Rodriguez are performing these fine songs just for you and yours. --Michael Ross

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A superb debut by an odd couple .......2005-09-17

Chip Taylor is probably more than 60 years old and Carrie Rodriguez looks about 15, but is probably 20. He writes songs, plays guitar and sings -- although he'll never win a voice contest. Carrie's twang would make an opera teacher cringe but she can carry a tune and might do well in a fiddle playing competition. Together, they make great music in an acoustic, down-home country way with an urban, big-town tinge to a few songs.

Taylor wrote "Angel in the Morning" about a century ago and "His Eyes" is a similar song with a cello and strings backing up the warbling of the comely Ms. R. The title track is a playful country number, as is "Sweet Tequila Blues." "Say Little Darling" has a bluegrass flavor. Rodriguez's violin is especially poignant -- think "Ashoka Farewell" -- on the instrumental "Midnight on the Water" and Taylor proves he can sing passably on "Was That for Me."

Chip and Carrie have now made three studio and one live CDs and every one of them is outstanding. Taylor's songs and Carrie's voice are the standouts of this duo. They are backed up by superb musicians and excellent arrangements that contrive successfully to appear relaxed.

5 out of 5 stars Just Good Time Music!.......2003-01-19

Great duets and a-soon-to-be-classic "Sweet Tequila Blues" make a great record. Along with Billy Joe Shaver's Freedom's Child CD, the best Texas gave in 2002...

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful new talent and some truly great songs!.......2002-09-20

Carrie Rodriguez is a wonderful, fresh new voice in country and folk music. Thank God Chip Taylor convinced her that she should sing. They sound really great together. Carrie is also a skilled musician who can play anything from snappy Texas fiddle to classical violin. Add the fact that she is beautiful beyond words, much more so than the lovely photographs in this Cd really convey (I just saw a concert with her and Chip and I was spellbound by her). I am also spellbound by some of the great songs on this lighthearted, fun cd. The titletrack, the western-swing flavoured "Extra", the sweet ballad "There's A Hole In The Midnight", the groovy "Do Your Part" and the magnificient "Sweet Tequila Blues" are all songs that I play over and over again. And even when I don't play them I can't get them out of my head. The only reason I don't give this a 5 is that some of the songs are somewhat overproduced with unnecessary string arrangements (especially "His Eyes" and "You Are Danger") These songs don't radiate with the lovely, laid-back spirit that can be heard on the rest of the record. Anyhow, I sure hope they do another cd togeher. Or maybe Chip could produce a solo album for Carrie. Please do Chip! The world sure needs to hear a lot more from her.

4 out of 5 stars Fine debut from a newly formed duet.......2002-09-14

He's a songwriter who's still better known for his '60s classics ("Wild Thing" "Angel of the Morning") than the fine country-folk material he's written and recorded in subsequent years. She's a 23-year-old fiddle player (and Berklee School of Music graduate) whose Austin upbringing has steeped her in Texas twang since childhood. A chance meeting at last year's South By Southwest music conference turned into an opportunity for the latter to play and sing support on domestic shows with the former. This turned into a deeper partnership on a European tour, with Rodriguez finding her voice (at Taylor's urging) and graduating to singing partner. The culmination is this album of duets, mostly written by Taylor specifically for the project.

For her part, Rodriguez is a fine fiddle player, with a singing voice that takes in the plaintive Southern side of Lucinda Williams and Kimmie Rhodes, but with a bit of the blue-yodel edge shown by the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines. Taylor's always had the sort of rough-hewn voice that Kris Kristofferson and John Prine have used to such great affect. The difference in their tone, also reflecting the difference in their ages, is what makes their duet singing so appealing to the ears.

The music sticks almost entirely to the acoustic, with stellar guitar and mandolin playing from John McGann and upright bass from Jim Whitney. The tunes ranges from old-timey influenced folk country to Texas swing and acoustic jazz. Taylor's new songs are accompanied by a pair of traditional covers ("Say Little Darlin'" and the instrumental "Midnight on the Water"), and a reprise of his own "Storybook Children" (a 1968 hit for Judy Clay and co-writer Billy Vera), the song that sparked this duo's act on stage.

With SXSW having become something of a meat market at which artists display their wares to labels, it's pleasing to find something grow organically from the chance meeting of musicians, unbrokered by A&R flacks.

5 out of 5 stars electrifying new talent.......2002-09-12

For my money practically no singer plays acoustic guitar better than ex racetrack gambler Chip Taylor. But the avowed purpose of this album is to introduce Carrie Rodriguez, and it is she - her voice and fiddle - that do indeed take this recording to its zenith. I like some tracks here better than anything I've listened to in a long time, and I listen to a lot of music of this genre. Whatever genre that is, because there's a mix. However I suspect Carrie will ultimately sail to superstardom with "Say Little Darling" bluegrassy type tunes. You'll think "Allison Krauss" but hey this is "Texas" fiddle, and Carrie has a vocal persona all her own and very, very enchanting indeed.

The debut by former Get Up Kids singer and guitarist Jim Suptic's new band is largely a delight. This is sappy, excellent power pop that exists far outside the tidy and tedious realm of "emo," so let's all agree to not use that word again in reference to Suptic's work, ever. "Maybe Just Maybe" is simply one of the best songs released this year; the hooks in that tune are so large you could fish with them all day. "Empty Tank" might be a tad overdone in its rockist celebration of loner underground bands, but it wouldn't work unless it was so over the top. The band's already been through a lot; early on, drummer Billy Brimblecom discovered he had cancer and was forced to amputate a leg. Forget Fall Out Boy: here's sturdy and emotional rock music on par with the Replacements, dB's, and Weezer. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Nice debut for Suptic and crew.......2007-06-22

One listen to "This Town's Disaster," and you'll come to the realization that the songwriting talent of the Get Up Kids was equally distributed. Standout tracks include "Lost Without You,""Blue Skies," and "Goodnight to Romance." Suptic's voice is perfectly suited for the refreshingly non-emo sound. There's room to grow, but with the quality of their first album that can only mean good things.

5 out of 5 stars Just to Balance the Scale.......2006-12-09

This is a solid 3 1/2 star album. I like it, its not knocking down any new walls, but its good music. I'm just giving this 5 stars to offset the needless One Star Review. Just try'n to be fair.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds of the year.......2006-12-04

This cd definately tops my list for one of the best cds of the year. This is by far one of the strongest debuts from any band I've heard in a long time.

1 out of 5 stars Perfect pablum for today's corporate radio airwaves.......2006-08-20

Sorry to hear about the drummers health issues, it's a sad story with what seems to have a happy ending.

That still doesn't make me like this CD, or even want to root for this band. I bought it based on some glowing reviews, and after trying to get through it, it is the same crappy, self-pitying wimp rock music that has polluted radio for the past 10 years.

Its not that its not well crafted, and the musicians aren't good and the songwriting is bad, its just too safe, too sweet, too unoriginal, heard it all before.

Good news for these gentlemen is, these songs should get a lot of FM airplay, which is why I now have satellite radio.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-08-08

It's been a very long time since I've been fully pleased with a new record. This is that record. Every new album I've looked forward to over the past couple of years has disappointed me to some extent. (Some a lot more than others.) This Town's Disaster is the one that was actually far better than I was expecting. It starts off great and just gets better. It's so difficult to pick a favorite track. Each track has me saying "this is my favorite song!" but then the next one comes on and I change my mind, because I like it even more. Everything about this record is strong and it is something that really makes me happy to listen to. I feel like a better person everytime I listen. It's just an excellent record. The live performance is top notch as well. Recommended.

Key tracks: Unlucky, It's Never About What It's About, Empty Tank.

With this follow-up to 2002's Love and China, the thematically adventurous Massachusetts-based duo turns its songwriting and trilling sisterly harmonies toward the uncertain, often tumultuous world of female adolescence. The Nields sisters occasionally get a trifle erudite on songs like "Plastic Angel" and "The Day I Let Glory Steer." They are more successful when they grapple more viscerally with the perils of teenage intimacy ("When I Let You into My Closet") or the struggle for personal liberation from small-town minds (title tune). And when they deliver a tour de force like the affirming country ballad "When I'm Here," their intertwined voices ring not only with occasional anger and well-aimed sarcasm, but also empathy and passion. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars another nields gem.......2005-08-29

This album is another gem and a deserving follow up to Nerissa and Katryna Nields' classic "Love and China". Nerissa's tales of life and growing up are mesmerizing.

The soaring, Nieldsy harmonies at the end of the album's opening song "The Day I Let Glory Steer" blew me away the first time that I heard them and are still blowing me away well over a year later. "Glory" holds special meaning for this father of a 4 year old girl.

I'm guessing that everyone who hears this album will find a song which holds some special meaning for them, too.

4 out of 5 stars More Nields is good news.......2004-03-29

As has been said before, the songs on _This Town Is Wrong_ relate to Nerissa's book of the same name. I don't think each song is by a different character (as I first thought when I read reviews), but rather the songs are by different characters, and some have more than one. Not that it makes any difference. You can enjoy the album without having read the book or even knowing about it. The sisters go back to their rocking days, and the album sounds more like the Nields band than the duo's release. The country influence is still there, even stronger on songs like "When I'm Here" and "Sara, With Your Ring" and present, but in more country-folk format on other songs. Overall it's grown and continues to grow on me, though the roughness the sisters' voices sometimes have grates on me a bit more than usual. I'm happy to have a whole album full of their insights on teenagers (from the perspective of both teenagers and adults.) The Nields have brought us so many great songs about teenagers (much of _Gotta Get Over Greta_ springs to the top of my head; there are many others) it seems like they're the right people to do it. Right now it's my least favorite of any of the Nields releases I've heard, but considering how much I love their music, it's the difference between a "B" and an "A." I still like _This Town Is Wrong_ a lot and heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars how to get out of the winter blues.......2004-01-30

The first best cd of 2004 has to be Katryna and Nerissa Nields'
This Town is Wrong. The writing is expansive, use of language and imagery keeps you listening to each song. The sisters outdo themselves in harmonies, the production of the cd suits the material.. it is highly listenable, enjoyable, and a great second effort by these New England Based singer songwriters..

5 out of 5 stars this town rocks.......2004-01-21

The Nields sisters have outdone themselves this time. You don't have to know that the album is the soundtrack to a book to enjoy this wonderful set of songs, but the background enhances the experience even more. The songs on the album were supposedly written by two different characters in the book, yet somehow Nerissa has managed to make it completely clear which are which. And the sibling harmonies have never sounded more beautiful.

Dave Chalfant is one of the most exciting producers out there today. This is the most gorgeous sounding album yet from any incarnation of the Nields, with sounds we haven't heard in their work before.

    A must-buy!!!

    5 out of 5 stars I can't wait for the book!!!.......2004-01-17

The Nields sisters have done it again! Nerissa is such an amazing songwriter, and as always, Nerissa and Katryna's harmonies lift the spirit. The album goes with Nerissa's upcoming book of the same title, about two teenage girls. You don't need to know the book to enjoy the album, but each song is by one of the characters in the book. This will make it really fun when the book comes out next fall. I can't wait. In the meantime, I will have something to tide me over.
